Redragon K552P-KB: software installation, RGB configuration, and troubleshooting in Windows 11/10

Redragon K552P-KB is a wired 87-key TKL mechanical keyboard with RGB backlighting, N-Key Rollover, and multimedia functions. A separate Redragon system driver does not need to be installed for normal text input: after connecting via USB, Windows uses the standard HID driver.

Redragon Software is required for additional keyboard settings. Because K552P-KB belongs to an older generation of the K552 series and uses an older software package, in Windows 11 it is especially important to first check normal keyboard operation and only then install Software.

Part 1. Installing and connecting Redragon K552P-KB

Is a separate driver required?

No. K552P-KB connects to the computer via USB and uses the standard Windows keyboard driver for normal operation.

1. Connect the keyboard directly to a USB port on the computer.
2. Wait a few seconds.
3. Open any text editor.
4. Check letters, numbers, Space, Enter, and Backspace.

If input works, the system HID driver is installed correctly.

Do not use third-party automatic driver search programs. They are not required for normal K552P-KB operation.

Which software to install

For K552P-KB, the official Redragon website uses two names for the same software package:

Redragon_K552RGB-1_Mechanical_Keyboard.exe

and:

Redragon_K552P-K_Software.exe

Testing of both files showed that they are completely identical: their size, SHA-256 hash, and byte-for-byte contents match.

There is no need to install both versions.

What the installer check showed

The verified file has:

• size — 6,098,263 bytes;
• SHA-256 a991a97f4c58a1f712d18abe64d3c377b915ffa5dda963190711f8a9d82c58d9;
• an older InstallShield installation mechanism;
• internal family designation K552RGB-1 / K552RGB-2 Mechanical Keyboard;
• no embedded Authenticode signature.

Because of the age of the package, the installation wizard may look different from modern Windows programs.

Windows displays a warning when starting the installer

The verified EXE does not have a standard embedded Authenticode digital signature. Windows or security software may therefore perform additional checks on the file.

Do not disable Microsoft Defender, SmartScreen, or your antivirus just to install Software.

Before starting, make sure the file was obtained from the official K552P-KB page.

Windows 11: check the keyboard without the software first

The official specification for this model dates from a period when the supported operating systems listed were Windows 10, 8, 7, Vista, and XP. Therefore, the absence of Windows 11 from the old compatibility list does not by itself mean that the keyboard does not work in Windows 11.

The basic USB keyboard uses the standard Windows HID mechanism.

1. Connect K552P-KB via USB.
2. Do not install Software immediately.
3. Check normal text input.
4. Check the Fn functions and backlighting.
5. Only then install the proprietary software.

Installing the software in Windows 11

1. Connect K552P-KB directly to a USB port on the computer.
2. Check normal input.
3. Close configuration programs for other Redragon keyboards.
4. Run the official EXE for K552P-KB.
5. Complete the steps in the InstallShield wizard.
6. After installation, keep the keyboard connected.
7. Start Redragon Software.

If the installer finishes normally but the software does not detect the device, do not immediately install Software from another K552. Go to the “Device not detected” section below.

Installing the software in Windows 10

1. Connect K552P-KB via USB.
2. Wait for Windows to automatically detect the HID keyboard.
3. Check text input.
4. Run the official installer.
5. Complete the installation.
6. Start the software while the keyboard is connected.

The software displays Device not detected

For older K552 RGB models, this is one of the best-known practical problems: the keyboard itself works, but Software reports that the device is not detected.

Check in this order:

1. Make sure you have K552P-KB, not K552-KR/Rainbow.
2. Make sure the official K552P-KB / K552RGB-1 package is being used.
3. Disconnect the keyboard from the USB hub.
4. Connect it directly to the computer.
5. Try another USB port.
6. Close the software.
7. Disconnect the keyboard for a few seconds.
8. Connect it again.
9. Wait for Windows to detect the HID device.
10. Start Redragon Software again.

If the keyboard continues to type normally, failure to detect it in Software does not mean that the system driver is broken.

Why the wrong Software version does not help

The K552 series includes several models with different hardware. The most common mistake is choosing software based only on the word K552.

Do not install software for the following models instead of K552P-KB:

• K552-KR;
• K552-KRS;
• K552P-KR EU;
• K552BGC-M;
• another K552 just because the case looks the same.

K552BGC-M is especially different: it is a magnetic Hall Effect keyboard with completely different electronics and software.

Runtime Error or Abnormal Program Termination

Older K552 Software is mentioned in user reports together with startup errors such as Runtime Error or abnormal program termination.

If the software closes when starting:

1. Restart Windows.
2. Connect K552P-KB directly via USB.
3. Close utilities for other keyboards and mice.
4. Uninstall the installed Redragon Software.
5. Restart the computer.
6. Install the official K552P-KB package again.
7. Start the software only after Windows has fully detected the keyboard.

Do not download random old versions of K552 Software from file-hosting websites in an attempt to fix Runtime Error.

Reinstalling the software in Windows 11

1. Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
2. Find the installed Redragon program.
3. Click the three-dot button.
4. Select Uninstall.
5. Restart the computer.
6. Connect K552P-KB directly via USB.
7. Check normal input.
8. Install the official package again.

Reinstalling the software in Windows 10

1. Open Settings → Apps → Apps & features.
2. Find Redragon Software.
3. Click Uninstall.
4. Restart the computer.
5. Connect the keyboard.
6. Check normal input.
7. Install the official package again.

Part 2. Configuring RGB and troubleshooting Redragon K552P-KB

RGB backlighting

K552P-KB has RGB backlighting with 18 built-in modes and several color options. The main effects can be used without proprietary software.

Additional configuration is available through Redragon Software.

Main hardware backlight functions

For the K552P RGB family, the Ins, Home, PgUp, Del, End, and PgDn keys are used to switch between built-in effects. On a specific regional version, also refer to the secondary markings on the keycaps.

Windows key lock

If the Windows key suddenly stops opening the Start menu, first press Fn+Win again. There is no need to reinstall the HID driver for this.

Configuring RGB through Redragon Software

1. Connect K552P-KB directly via USB.
2. Start Redragon Software.
3. Make sure the software has detected the keyboard.
4. Open the lighting section.
5. Select an available effect.
6. Adjust the available color, brightness, or speed settings.
7. Apply the changes.

RGB does not change through the software

1. Check that Software actually detects K552P-KB.
2. Close the software.
3. Reconnect the keyboard directly via USB.
4. Start Software again.
5. Change only one setting.
6. Apply it and check the result.

If the hardware RGB key combinations work but Software does not change anything, the problem is more likely related to the software or compatibility with the specific hardware revision rather than the keyboard LEDs.

Some RGB modes disappeared or work incorrectly

User reports for K552 RGB mention cases where some effects stop appearing or the backlight turns off completely instead of displaying the expected mode.

Check as follows:

1. Switch through several modes using the hardware Fn combinations.
2. Increase the brightness.
3. Close Redragon Software.
4. Disconnect the keyboard from USB for a few seconds.
5. Connect it again.
6. Check the effects without the software running.
7. If the problem appeared after software configuration, restore a standard effect through Software if the software detects the device.

Settings are not saved

1. Connect the keyboard directly via USB.
2. Start Software.
3. Change only one setting.
4. Apply the change.
5. Close the software.
6. Disconnect and reconnect the keyboard.
7. Check whether the setting was saved.

Not all functions of the older Software are necessarily saved in the same way in the internal memory of different K552 hardware revisions.

Configuring macros and remapping keys

If the installed version of Software provides the corresponding functions:

1. Open Redragon Software.
2. Select a supported key.
3. Open the macro or assignment editor.
4. Create a short test macro.
5. Configure delays if necessary.
6. Assign the macro to the key.
7. Apply the change.
8. Check the result in a safe application.

A key performs the wrong command after configuration

1. Start Redragon Software.
2. Check the changed assignment.
3. Delete the problematic macro.
4. Restore the key’s default function.
5. Apply the changes.
6. Close the software.
7. Check the key in a regular text editor.

One key misses or duplicates keystrokes

First rule out a software-related cause:

1. Close Redragon Software.
2. Check the key in a text editor.
3. Connect the keyboard to another USB port.
4. Test it on another computer.
5. If macros or remapping were used, restore the default action.

K552P-KB exists in different hardware versions, and the official Redragon pages even differ in their description of the switch type. Therefore, before removing a switch, make sure that your specific keyboard actually supports hot-swap.

How to check K552P-KB in Windows 11

1. Right-click the Start button.
2. Select Device Manager.
3. Open the Keyboards section.
4. Also check Human Interface Devices.

K552P-KB may appear as a standard HID keyboard. The absence of the word Redragon in the device name does not by itself indicate an error.

How to check K552P-KB in Windows 10

1. Right-click the Start button.
2. Open Device Manager.
3. Check the Keyboards section.
4. Check Human Interface Devices.

A yellow icon appeared in Device Manager

If you have been able to determine exactly that the device with the error is related to K552P-KB:

1. Disconnect the keyboard.
2. Open Device Manager.
3. Find the related entry with the warning icon.
4. Right-click it.
5. Select Uninstall device.
6. Restart the computer.
7. Reconnect the keyboard.
8. Wait for the HID device to be installed automatically.

Do not install firmware from another K552

If the software does not detect K552P-KB or RGB works incorrectly, do not try to fix it with firmware from another model.

First check:

• the correct K552P-KB Software;
• a direct USB connection;
• another USB port;
• operation without Software;
• operation on another computer.

The keyboard does not work at all

1. Disconnect K552P-KB from the computer.
2. Connect it to another USB port.
3. Do not use a USB hub.
4. Close Redragon Software.
5. Restart the computer.
6. Check the keyboard before starting the software.
7. If possible, test it on another computer.

If K552P-KB is not detected and does not type on several computers, reinstalling the configuration software usually does not resolve this type of hardware problem.

Can K552P-KB be used without Redragon Software?

Yes. Redragon Software is not required for normal text input.

Standard keyboard functions and built-in RGB modes are available without the software. Software is useful for additional lighting settings, remapping supported keys, and macros.
