The HP LaserJet 5200L is an A3 monochrome laser printer that can use the HP Universal Print Driver (HP UPD). The printer can still be connected to a modern computer, but it is important to select the package for the correct Windows version and system architecture.
Below are separate step-by-step instructions for Windows 11 and Windows 10, along with solutions to the most common problems: “Driver is unavailable,” a missing USB001 or DOT4_001 port, stuck print jobs, incorrect paper size and PCL XL errors.
Drivers can be downloaded from the official HP LaserJet 5200L support page
Installing the HP LaserJet 5200L in Windows 11 via USB
Step 1. Remove the automatically added printer
If the HP LaserJet 5200L has not yet been connected to this computer, proceed to the next step. If the USB cable has already been connected and Windows attempted to install the printer automatically, first remove the print queue it created.
- Disconnect the printer’s USB cable from the computer.
- Open Start → Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Printers & scanners.
- Select the HP LaserJet 5200L or a non-working printer instance with a similar name.
- Click Remove and confirm the removal.
- If the list contains several non-working 5200L instances, remove each of them. Do not remove other printers.
- Restart the computer with the USB cable disconnected.
Step 2. Check the system type
- Open Start → Settings → System → About.
- Find the System type entry.
- If it lists a 64-bit Intel or AMD processor, use the upd-pcl6-win11-x64-8.2.0.26819.zip driver. If it lists an ARM-based processor, download the ARM64 version.
Step 3. Download and extract the driver
- Do not connect the printer’s USB cable to the computer.
- Download the driver from the direct link: https://ftp.hp.com/pub/softlib/software13/printers/UPD/upd-pcl6-win11-x64-8.2.0.26819.zip.
- Right-click the downloaded ZIP file and select Extract All.
- Specify a separate folder and click Extract.
Step 4. Install the driver in USB Plug and Play mode
- Make sure that the USB cable is still disconnected from the computer.
- Open the extracted folder.
- Right-click Install.exe and select Run as administrator.
- Click Yes in the User Account Control window.
- Accept the license agreement and continue the installation.
- Select USB mode — Plug and Play.
- Leave the option to add HP Universal Printing PCL 6 to the Windows driver store enabled.
- If the installer offers to remove all older versions of HP Universal Print Driver, clear this check box. Removing them may affect other installed HP printers; this is necessary only when troubleshooting a confirmed conflict with an older driver.
- Click Next and wait for the files to be copied.
- When the installer prompts you to connect the device, connect the USB cable directly to the computer. The printer must be turned on and in the Ready state.
- Wait for the printer to be detected and for setup to finish. Do not disconnect the cable during installation.
- Click Finish.
In the device list, the printer may be named HP Universal Printing PCL 6 rather than HP LaserJet 5200L. This is normal for a universal driver. If necessary, you can rename the queue after testing the printer.
Step 5. Test the printer in Windows 11
- Open Start → Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Printers & scanners.
- Select the installed printer.
- Open Printer properties. Do not confuse this item with the regular “Printing preferences” window.
- On the General tab, click Print Test Page.
If the test page prints correctly, the driver installation is complete. If you encounter problems, continue reading.
Windows 11: installing the exact PCL 5 driver through Windows Update
This method is useful if the universal PCL 6 driver does not install, produces a PCL XL error or prints incorrectly from older software.
- Connect the powered-on printer via USB and wait 30–60 seconds for Windows to create a port.
- Open Start → Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Printers & scanners.
- Click Add device.
- Wait for the search to finish, and then click Add manually next to the message indicating that the printer is not listed.
- Select Add a local printer or network printer with manual settings and click Next.
- Select Use an existing port.
- For a direct USB connection, select USB001 or DOT4_001. If neither port is available, cancel the wizard and follow the recommendations in the “USB001 or DOT4_001 port is missing” section below.
- In the manufacturer and model selection window, click Windows Update.
- Wait for the list to update. This may take several minutes, and the window may appear unresponsive.
- In the left column, select HP, and in the right column select HP LaserJet 5200L Series PCL 5.
- If Windows reports that the driver is already installed, first choose to use the driver that is currently installed. Replace it only if it is corrupted or there is a clear conflict.
- Enter a clear name, such as HP LaserJet 5200L PCL 5.
- If the printer does not need to be used from other computers, select Do not share this printer.
- Complete the wizard and print a test page.
Windows 11: manual installation from an INF file
You can use this method if the USB001 or DOT4_001 port already exists but the automatic installer does not create a print queue.
- Open the manual printer addition wizard and select the existing USB001 or DOT4_001 port.
- In the driver selection window, click Have Disk, and then click Browse.
- Open the folder containing the extracted HP UPD package and select hpcu360u.inf.
- Select HP Universal Printing PCL 6 and complete the wizard.
- Open the properties of the printer you created and print a test page.
Installation from an INF file creates a queue on an existing port, but it does not always correct missing USB/DOT4 components. If Windows did not create the port, use USB Plug and Play mode.

Connecting the HP LaserJet 5200L over a network
Use this section only if an optional HP Jetdirect card is installed in the printer or the printer is connected to an external print server. A USB port alone does not make the printer a network printer.
Before installation, find the IP address of the printer or print server. For Jetdirect, it can be found on the printer configuration page: open the INFORMATION menu and select PRINT CONFIGURATION. If an external print server is used, check the address in its web interface or in the router’s client list.
Adding a network printer in Windows 11
- First install the appropriate HP UPD PCL 6 by running Install.exe as an administrator. For a network installation, select the mode intended for traditional printer installation or add the driver to the Windows driver store beforehand.
- Open Start → Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Printers & scanners.
- Click Add device, wait for the search to finish and select Add manually.
- Select Add a local printer or network printer with manual settings.
- Select Create a new port and choose Standard TCP/IP Port as the port type.
- Enter the IP address of the printer or print server. You can leave the suggested port name unchanged.
- Select HP Universal Printing PCL 6. If it is not listed, click Have Disk and specify the INF file from the extracted package.
- Complete the wizard and print a test page.
Adding a network printer in Windows 10
- Install the HP UPD PCL 6 version matching your system architecture or add it to the driver store using Install.exe.
- Open Start → Settings → Devices → Printers & scanners.
- Click Add a printer or scanner, and then click The printer that I want isn’t listed.
- Select the option to add a local or network printer manually.
- Create a Standard TCP/IP Port and enter the IP address of the printer or print server.
- Select HP Universal Printing PCL 6. If necessary, click Have Disk and specify the driver’s INF file.
- Complete the installation and print a test page.
Jetdirect typically uses the RAW protocol and port 9100. To check the settings, open Printer properties → Ports, select the TCP/IP port you created and click Configure Port. Select LPR only if the external print server requires this protocol and you know the exact queue name.
What to do if the driver does not install or the printer does not print
Windows displays “Driver is unavailable” or “Unknown device”
- Disconnect the USB cable from the computer.
- Remove only the unsuccessfully created HP LaserJet 5200L queue from “Printers & scanners”.
- Press Win+X → Device Manager.
- Check the Print queues, Printers and Other devices sections.
- If they contain the HP LaserJet 5200L, an unknown USB device or an HP device with a warning icon, right-click that specific device and select Uninstall device. Do not remove USB controllers or devices whose purpose is unknown.
- Restart the computer.
- Run Install.exe as an administrator again in USB mode — Plug and Play.
- Connect the printer only when prompted by the installer.
USB001 or DOT4_001 port is missing
The port appears after the printer is detected correctly. Do not create an arbitrary USB port manually.
- Connect the printer to another USB port on the computer, preferably a port on the rear panel of a desktop PC.
- Remove any USB hub, adapter, docking station or extension cable from the connection.
- Test the printer with another known-good USB cable.
- Disconnect the cable and repeat the HP UPD installation in USB Plug and Play mode.
- In Windows 10, if necessary, open the HP driver page, expand the Driver-USB section and install HP LaserJet USB (DOT4) communication driver for Windows 8 and Higher, selecting the version for the correct system architecture. Then run the HP UPD installation again.
- In Windows 11, use the current HP UPD package for your architecture: its USB mode installs the required connection components.
The driver is installed, but no print queue appears
USB Plug and Play mode first adds the files to the driver store, and the queue is created after the powered-on printer is detected.
- Make sure that the printer is turned on and that Ready is displayed on the operator panel.
- Connect the USB cable directly to the computer and wait for up to two minutes.
- Open the “Printers & scanners” list and refresh the window.
- If Windows has created USB001 or DOT4_001, add the printer manually, select this port and choose the already installed HP Universal Printing PCL 6.
- If the port is missing, repeat the USB installation and check the cable.
Jobs remain in the queue, but printing does not start
- Open Printer properties → Ports.
- For a direct USB connection, the USB001 or DOT4_001 port associated with the HP LaserJet 5200L must be selected.
- For a network connection, the Standard TCP/IP port with the actual IP address of the Jetdirect card or print server must be selected.
- Do not select FILE:, WSD or LPT1 unless the printer is physically connected using that method.
- Click Apply and print a test page.
- If the job remains in the queue, cancel it, turn the printer off and on again, and then restart the computer.
Windows automatically selected Microsoft IPP Class Driver
The Windows universal IPP driver may not display the A3 paper size or some HP LaserJet 5200L settings. For a USB connection, remove this queue and install HP UPD PCL 6 or the exact HP LaserJet 5200L Series PCL 5 driver. For a network connection, create a Standard TCP/IP Port instead of a WSD port.
A PCL XL error appears or incorrect characters are printed
- Delete the failed job from the print queue.
- Install the exact HP LaserJet 5200L Series PCL 5 driver through Windows Update by following the instructions for your system.
- Create a separate queue for PCL 5, but assign it the same working USB or TCP/IP port.
- Print the same document from the new queue.
- If the program requires PostScript, download the current HP UPD PS version from the HP website and create a separate queue on the same port.
A3 is missing from the paper size settings
- Make sure that HP Universal Printing PCL 6 or HP LaserJet 5200L Series PCL 5 is being used rather than Microsoft IPP Class Driver.
- Open Printer properties → Device Settings.
- If Automatic Configuration is available, select Update Now.
- Open Printing preferences → Paper/Quality and check the paper size list.
- Select A3 and make sure that the corresponding paper size is loaded in the tray and set correctly on the printer’s operator panel.
The model does not appear after clicking “Windows Update”
- Check the computer’s internet connection.
- Click Windows Update again and wait 5–10 minutes. Do not close the wizard even if the list does not appear to change.
- If the list is still incomplete, open Control Panel → Devices and Printers.
- Open Print server properties, select the Drivers tab and click Add.
- Select the computer architecture, click Windows Update, and then select HP → HP LaserJet 5200L Series PCL 5.
- After adding the driver, return to the Windows 11 or Windows 10 instructions and create the queue on the correct port.
An older version of HP Universal Print Driver interferes with installation
First remove only the unsuccessfully created printer queue. If the error recurs, open Control Panel → Devices and Printers → Print server properties → Drivers and check the list.
Caution. Do not remove the HP Universal Printing PCL 6 package if it is used by other printers. Check the installed queues first. Removing a shared driver may temporarily stop printing on several devices.
If the old HP UPD is used only by the non-working HP LaserJet 5200L queue, remove that queue, then select the old package on the “Drivers” tab and click Remove → Remove driver and driver package. Restart the computer and reinstall the current package. If Windows reports that the driver is in use, do not force its removal: check the remaining queues and try again after restarting.
The network printer appears offline
- Press Win+R, type cmd and press Enter.
- Enter the ping IP address command, substituting the actual address of the Jetdirect card or print server.
- If there are no replies, check the address, network cable, power to the Jetdirect adapter or external server, and the router settings.
- If there are replies, open Printer properties → Ports and make sure that a Standard TCP/IP Port with the same address is selected.
- Click Configure Port and check that the RAW protocol and port number 9100 are selected.
- If printing works but Windows incorrectly shows the “Offline” status, you can clear the SNMP Status Enabled check box. Do this only after verifying that the IP address is correct.
After successful installation, print not only a Windows test page but also a regular A4 document followed by an A3 page. This allows you to check the connection to the printer, operation of the selected printer language and availability of the required paper size separately.
