If cyan, magenta or yellow shadows appear around letters, lines and colored objects on an OKI C542dn printout, first check the color registration. The instructions below cover everything from simple automatic adjustment to checking the LED heads, paper path and belt unit.
Where to perform the actions
Test printing and adjustment are performed on the printer’s touch panel, while cleaning and component checks are performed inside the OKI C542dn. A computer, driver and additional software are not required to adjust color registration.
Models covered by this guide
This guide is intended for the OKI C542dn. This model has a touch panel, four separate image drums and four LED heads. Do not use menu paths for the OKI C332dn or C532dn instead: these printers have different operator panels and sequences of actions.
The touch panel labels below are provided in English exactly as they appear in the C542dn interface and documentation.
Make sure that the problem is color misregistration
| What you see on the printout | What to check |
|---|---|
| A colored shadow is visible next to black letters or outlines; the edges of the cyan, magenta, yellow and black images do not align | Color registration |
| The outlines are aligned, but the entire printout is too red, blue, dark or faded | Color balance, density, toner or driver settings; this is not a registration problem |
| The entire printable area is shifted toward one edge of the page | Image position and paper settings; adjusting the registration of individual colors will not help |
| There are vertical white stripes, one color becomes faded or the edges of letters appear blurred | LED heads; they may need to be cleaned after registration adjustment |
| The defect appears only in one document or application | First print the printer’s internal pattern to distinguish a hardware problem from Windows and application settings |
Print the internal color pattern
Start with the internal page: it is generated by the printer itself and does not depend on Windows 11, Windows 10, the driver, the USB cable or the network. Load plain white A4 paper in Tray 1, and then follow these steps.
- On the touch panel’s home screen, press Device Settings.
- Press Reports.
- Open the Print category.
- Select Color Tuning Pattern.
- Press Yes and wait for the page to be printed.
Keep the printout for comparison. Examine the edges of the colored elements under good lighting. If separated outlines are also visible on the internal pattern, the cause is in the printer—proceed to automatic adjustment.
If the internal pattern is printed correctly
Do not disassemble the printer. Print the problematic file again from another application and, if possible, from another computer. A defect that does not appear on the internal page should be traced to the document, program, selected print queue or driver.
Run automatic registration adjustment
The OKI C542dn automatically adjusts registration after it is turned on and after the output tray is opened and closed. You do not need to change any color settings to force this check to run.
- Wait for the current jobs to finish and make sure that the printer is in the ready state.
- Press the open button next to the output tray.
- Fully raise the output tray. Do not touch the fuser unit inside: it may be extremely hot immediately after printing.
- Slowly lower the output tray.
- Press its center to ensure that it locks on both sides.
- Wait for the printer to finish the adjustment and return to the ready state. Do not open the tray or turn off the power during the operation.
- Print the Color Tuning Pattern again and compare it with the first printout.
If the colored shadows have disappeared, no further adjustment is required. If the offset remains, perform the adjustment manually.
Adjust color registration on the touch panel
- Press Device Settings.
- Use the scroll arrows to find and press Admin Setup.
- Enter the administrator name and password, and then press OK.
- If the credentials have not been changed, enter
adminas the name and999999as the password. - Use the scroll arrows to find Print Setup.
- Press Color Menu.
- Scroll to Adjust Registration and press it.
- Press Yes.
- Wait for the operation to finish and for the printer to return to the ready state.
- Print the internal color pattern again.
Do not change adjacent settings instead of adjusting registration
Adjust Density and Color Tuning change the density and color balance. They do not move the cyan, magenta, yellow and black images relative to one another. Use Adjust Registration specifically for colored shadows.
If the password 999999 is not accepted, the administrator password was previously changed. Do not reset the device solely to perform this adjustment: a reset may delete network settings and other saved data.
Clean the four LED heads
Proceed to cleaning if registration adjustment did not help and faded areas, vertical white stripes or blurred letter edges are also visible. You will need a clean, dry, soft, lint-free cloth.
Before cleaning
Turn off the printer using its power button, wait until it has shut down completely and disconnect the power cable. If the device has just printed, allow the fuser unit to cool. Do not use methanol, solvents, thinners or cleaning fluids.
- Press the open button and fully raise the output tray.
- Do not touch the fuser unit or the green surfaces of the image drums.
- Locate the four narrow LED head lenses above the image drums.
- Using a separate clean section of the dry, soft cloth, gently wipe each lens along its entire length. Do not press on or scratch the lens.
- Make sure that no toner, dust or lint remains on the lenses.
- Slowly close the output tray and press its center until it locks.
- Connect the power cable and turn on the printer.
- Wait for automatic color adjustment to finish, and then print the Color Tuning Pattern again.
Detailed cleaning steps for this model are also provided on the OKI C542 LED head cleaning page.
Check the paper path
A small scrap of paper, a label or another object in the paper path may interfere with paper movement and cause the color layers to become misaligned. Check the path while the printer is turned off and disconnected from the power supply.
- Pull out the Tray 1 cassette completely and remove any crumpled sheets or loose scraps of paper.
- Make sure that the paper guides touch the stack without squeezing it.
- Open the MP tray and inspect the accessible feed path.
- Raise the output tray and inspect the area around the four image drums. Do not touch the fuser unit, belt unit or green cylinders.
- Remove only scraps that are clearly visible and can be taken out without force. Do not use a knife, screwdriver, sharp-edged tweezers or other metal objects.
- Close the output tray, install the cassette, turn on the printer and repeat the test print.
If a scrap is under the image drums or near the belt unit but cannot be reached safely, do not try to pull it out without being able to see it. The following procedure allows the belt unit to be removed only if you are confident working with consumable units; otherwise, it is better to contact a service center.
Reinstall the belt unit
An incorrectly installed belt unit may cause misregistration. Follow this section if the simple methods did not help, the printer was recently transported or disassembled, or the Belt Unit not installed correctly. Re-set the Belt Unit. message appeared on the panel. Error code 330 may also be displayed with this message.
Caution: the image drums are sensitive to light, and the fuser unit may be hot
Turn off the printer, disconnect the power cable and wait for the fuser unit to cool. Prepare a clean, flat surface and several sheets of paper. Do not touch the green image drum cylinders or the smooth working surface of the belt. Immediately cover the removed image drums with paper and do not leave them under room lighting for more than five minutes.
- Press the open button and fully raise the output tray.
- Hold the black image drum unit with its toner cartridge installed and lift it out of the printer.
- Remove the cyan, magenta and yellow units in sequence in the same way.
- Place the four units next to one another on the prepared clean surface, keeping them stable, and immediately cover them with sheets of paper.
- Locate the two blue lock levers on the sides of the belt unit.
- Hold both blue levers, unlock the belt unit and lift it toward you.
- Inspect the mounting areas. Remove only a loose scrap of paper or another object. If the belt is torn, scratched or deformed, or toner is spilling from it, stop working.
- Align the protrusions on the belt unit with the corresponding recesses and arrows on both sides of the printer.
- Insert the rear of the belt unit first, and then lower the unit horizontally into its mounting position.
- Rotate both blue levers inward to lock the belt unit. The levers should close without excessive force. If either lever does not close, remove the belt unit again and check the alignment of the protrusions with the recesses.
- Return the image drums to the printer in the following order: Y (yellow), M (magenta), C (cyan), K (black). For each unit, align the protrusion with the indicated arrow and color label.
- Make sure that all four units are installed evenly and are at the same height.
- Slowly close the output tray and press its center until it locks.
- Connect the power cable, turn on the printer and wait for automatic adjustment to finish.
- Print a new Color Tuning Pattern and compare it with the original printout.
The positions of the locks and the installation sequence are shown in the OKI C542 belt unit reinstallation instructions. Reinstalling the old belt unit is not the same as replacing it, so there is no need to reset its life counter.
When further adjustment will not help
Stop checking the printer yourself and contact a service center if one color remains offset after automatic and manual adjustment, LED head cleaning and correct belt unit installation. A professional inspection is also required if error code 330 returns after the printer is turned on, the belt unit locks do not close without force, scratches or deformation are visible on the belt or an image drum, toner has spilled inside, or unusual mechanical noise occurs during printing.
