Colors Are Misaligned and Colored Shadows Appear on the OKI C532dn: Adjusting Color Registration

Last Updated on 28.08.2026 by DriverNew

If a cyan, magenta or yellow outline appears around black letters on the OKI C532dn and the colored parts of an image are printed with an offset, first check the color registration using the printer’s internal pattern. Then run the automatic adjustment, and proceed to cleaning the LED heads and checking the print path only if necessary.

Where to perform the actions

Diagnostics and adjustment are performed using the OKI C532dn’s button-based operator panel and physically on the printer. Windows 11, Windows 10, the driver and color correction utilities are not required to correct a geometric offset between color layers. In the instructions below, output tray means the top cover of the print mechanism, not the rear output tray.

Models covered by this guide

This guide is intended for the OKI C532dn. The model may be displayed as OKI C532 on the operator panel and in the software.

Do not use the menu path below for the OKI C332dn or C542dn. The C332dn has a different button-based operator panel and a common image drum unit, while the C542dn is operated using a touch panel. These models require separate instructions.

How to distinguish color misregistration from other defects

What you see on the page Likely diagnostic direction Does this article apply?
A cyan, magenta or yellow outline is visible near black letters or lines The C/M/Y color images are not aligned with the K black image Yes
The edges of colored objects are duplicated in the same way in different documents A registration failure inside the printer is possible Yes, if the defect is present on the internal pattern
The colors have an incorrect shade, but the edges of the objects are aligned Color balance, profile, driver settings or the source file No
There is a vertical white stripe, a faded area or blurred letters without a separate colored outline Contamination of an LED head or the condition of the toner or image drum Use the separate LED head cleaning section below
The entire image is shifted relative to the edge of the paper, but the color layers are aligned Print position, paper size or tray settings No

Step 1. Print the internal color pattern

Do not start with a Windows test page: the application, driver and color profile may alter the result. The internal pattern is generated by the printer itself and allows you to check the color layers without a computer.

  1. Wait for the Ready To Print message. If an error is shown on the display or the ATTENTION indicator is flashing, correct the indicated problem first.
  2. Use the arrow buttons to select Setting, and then press the ENTER button.
  3. Select Admin Setup, and then press ENTER.
  4. Enter the current administrator password. The factory default password for the C532dn is 999999. If it has been changed, use the new password; do not reset the device settings solely because the password is unknown.
  5. Open Print Setup → Color Menu.
  6. Select Color Tuning/Print Pattern, and then press ENTER.
  7. When Execute appears, press ENTER, and then press it again to confirm that you want to print the pattern.

Examine the thin lines, the edges of the colored areas and the sections where the cyan, magenta, yellow and black elements are next to each other. If a colored outline or offset is visible on the internal pattern, the fault is in the printer. If the pattern is correct but the defect appears only when printing a particular file from Windows, check another document and restore the print job’s color settings to their defaults. Color Correct Utility and ICC profiles can change shades, but they should not be used to correct a physical offset between layers.

Step 2. Run automatic registration adjustment

The OKI C532dn performs automatic registration adjustment when it is turned on and after the top output tray is opened and closed. Start with this standard and reversible operation.

  1. Complete all print jobs and wait for the Ready To Print status.
  2. Press the top cover release button and fully open the output tray. Do not remove any consumables or touch any parts inside.
  3. Slowly close the output tray and press its center to ensure that the latch is fully locked.
  4. The Color Adjusting message may appear on the display. Registration and density are adjusted during this process. Do not open the cover, send a new job or turn off the printer.
  5. Wait for the Ready To Print status to return, and then print the internal color pattern again.

If the colored outlines are now aligned, no further changes are required. Do not consider a slight difference in shade without duplicated edges to be the result of registration adjustment: shade and the position of the color images are different parameters.

Step 3. Run Adjust Registration from the menu

If opening and closing the tray did not correct the offset, start the adjustment manually from the button-based operator panel:

  1. Select Setting, and then press ENTER.
  2. Open Admin Setup and enter the administrator password.
  3. Select Print Setup.
  4. Open Color Menu.
  5. Select Adjust Registration, and then press ENTER.
  6. When Execute appears, press ENTER again.
  7. Wait for the Color Adjusting message to disappear and for the printer to return to the ready state.
  8. Print a new internal color pattern and compare it with the previous one.

Do not change adjacent settings to remove a colored shadow

The Adjust Density command, the highlight, mid-tone and dark settings, and the C/M/Y/K density values do not move the color images relative to one another. Do not change them at random or reset all settings.

If the first manual adjustment noticeably reduced the offset, you can run Adjust Registration → Execute once more. If two consecutive adjustments produce the same poor result, repeating the process usually does not help identify the cause—proceed to the following checks.

Step 4. Clean the four LED heads if printing is blurred or has white stripes

Contamination of an LED head may be accompanied by misregistration, but it more often appears as a vertical white stripe, a faded area or blurred letter edges. The C532dn has four LED heads.

Do not touch the fuser unit or use solvents

The fuser unit inside the printer may be extremely hot. Do not touch the marked hot area. Do not clean the lenses with methyl alcohol, thinner, household cleaning fluid or compressed air: this may damage the lens surfaces and spread toner throughout the device.

  1. Wait until the mechanism has stopped completely. You do not need to turn off the device for routine LED head cleaning.
  2. Press the cover release button and fully open the top output tray.
  3. Locate the four long, narrow LED head lenses on the inside of the raised cover.
  4. Without applying pressure, wipe each lens with a clean, dry, soft, lint-free cloth. Use a clean section of the cloth for each lens to avoid transferring toner.
  5. Slowly close the output tray and press its center until it locks.
  6. Wait for the automatic adjustment, and then print the internal color pattern again.

If necessary, you can see the location of the four lenses in the C532 LED head cleaning instructions.

Step 5. Check the paper path and belt unit installation

Proceed to this step if registration adjustment and cleaning did not help, or if the defect appeared immediately after clearing a paper jam, replacing an image drum or removing the belt unit. A foreign object in the paper path or an incorrectly installed belt unit may cause misregistration on the C532dn.

Prepare before removing the image drums

Shut down the printer properly, disconnect the power cable and allow the hot parts to cool. Prepare a clean, flat surface and sheets of paper. The green image drum cylinders are fragile: do not touch them or leave the image drums in direct or bright light. Even under normal room lighting, complete the check in less than five minutes.

First check for foreign objects

  1. Press the cover release button and fully open the top output tray. Do not touch the fuser unit.
  2. Note the order of the four image drums by their color labels.
  3. Remove the four image drums one at a time by holding the designated parts, taking care not to strike them against the LED heads. Place them on a clean, flat surface in the same order and immediately cover them with clean paper.
  4. Inspect the exposed paper path. Remove only a loose scrap of paper, label or other object that can be picked up easily with your fingers and without tools.
  5. Do not wipe the working surface of the belt, scrape off toner or use a vacuum cleaner or compressed air.
  6. If the belt unit has not been removed and is installed evenly, do not take it out. Return the four image drums to the positions indicated by their corresponding color labels.
  7. Close the output tray, connect the power cable, turn on the printer and, once it reaches the ready state, run Adjust Registration → Execute.

Reinstall the belt unit only if there is a specific reason

Remove and reinstall the belt unit only if it was recently removed, is tilted, the cover no longer closes correctly or the display shows a belt unit installation error. There is no need to disassemble a properly working unit solely for a preventive check.

  1. Leave the four image drums removed and protected from light.
  2. Locate the two lock levers on the sides of the belt unit and turn them forward to unlock the unit.
  3. Holding the belt unit only by the lock levers, lift it vertically. Do not touch the dark working surface.
  4. Inspect the mounting area and remove only a loose scrap of paper. Do not touch the sensors or wipe the internal surfaces.
  5. Holding the unit by both levers, lower the belt unit evenly into its mounting position. It should sit in place without force or tilting.
  6. Turn both lock levers backward to the locked position.
  7. Install the four image drums according to their color labels. Each image drum should lower evenly; do not force it.
  8. Slowly close the output tray and press its center until it locks.
  9. Connect the power cable and turn on the printer. Once the printer reaches the ready state, run Adjust Registration → Execute and print the internal color pattern.

The positions of the levers and units are also shown on the C532 belt unit installation page. Do not replace the belt unit solely because of a colored shadow: first evaluate the results of the registration adjustment and reinstallation.

When service diagnostics are required

Stop attempting repairs yourself if the offset remains on the internal color pattern after running Adjust Registration twice, cleaning the LED heads and safely checking the units that were previously handled. Service is especially necessary in the following cases:

  • the same color is consistently offset by a noticeable distance, and the adjustment does not change the result at all;
  • the offset is accompanied by repeating spots, scratches, the loss of one color or mechanical noise;
  • the belt has a visible crease, tear or deep scratch—there is no need to touch its surface for further inspection;
  • a belt unit lock lever is damaged, an image drum does not seat without force or the top cover does not close;
  • belt unit or image drum errors return after reinstallation;
  • the printer does not complete the Color Adjusting process or displays a service call message.

Keep the internal color patterns printed before and after the adjustment, and record the event after which the defect appeared: toner, image drum or belt unit replacement, clearing a paper jam, transporting the device or ordinary printing. Do not enter the service menu, clean the sensors under the belt unit or immediately purchase four image drums without identifying the faulty unit.
