If a cyan, magenta or yellow outline appears around black letters and the colored parts of an image overlap with an offset, the OKI C332dn probably has a color registration problem. First, confirm the defect on an internal demo page, and then run the built-in automatic adjustment. This allows you to distinguish a print mechanism fault from a problem with the file, program or driver without changing color settings at random.
Where to perform the actions
The main actions are performed on the printer’s button-based operator panel. Windows 11, Windows 10, the driver and OKI programs are not required to correct a geometric color offset. In the instructions below, output tray means the top cover of the print mechanism. Do not confuse it with the rear output tray used for face-up printing.
Models covered by this guide
This guide applies to the OKI C332dn and OKI C332dnw. Both models use the same button-based operator panel, a common image drum unit and the same registration procedure. The letter w in C332dnw indicates the presence of a wireless module and does not affect registration adjustment.
Do not use the menu path below for the OKI C532dn or C542dn. These models have a different operator panel and a different consumables design, so they require separate instructions.
Make sure that the problem is color misregistration
| What you see on the page | What it indicates | Does this guide apply? |
|---|---|---|
| A colored shadow is visible near black text or thin lines; the cyan, magenta or yellow layer is offset from the black layer | The geometric registration of the color images is incorrect | Yes |
| The outlines of colored objects are duplicated in the same way in every document | A registration problem inside the printer is likely | Yes, if the defect is also present on the internal demo page |
| The entire image has an incorrect color cast, but the edges of the objects are aligned | Color reproduction, profile, driver settings or the source file | No |
| There are vertical white lines, one color is faint or text is blurred without a separate colored outline | Contamination of an LED head or the condition of the toner or image drum | Only partially; use the separate LED head check below |
| The entire image is shifted on the page, but the color layers are aligned with each other | Print position, paper size or job settings | No |
Step 1. Print an internal demo page
A test from Windows is not suitable for the first check because the application, driver, profile and file itself may affect the result. The internal page is generated by the printer.
- Wait for the READY status. If the ATTENTION indicator is lit or blinking, first read the message on the display and correct the indicated error.
- Use the arrow MENU buttons to find PRINT INFORMATION, and then press OK.
- Select DEMO PAGE and confirm printing by pressing OK. The page will contain color and monochrome graphic elements and text.
- Examine the black letters, thin lines and boundaries of the colored areas under good lighting.
If colored shadows are present on the demo page, the problem is in the printer; proceed to the next step. If the demo page is correct but the defect appears only when printing from Windows 11 or Windows 10, do not disassemble the printer: try another document, reset the job’s color settings to their defaults and make sure that printing is being sent to the OKI C332 queue with an appropriate driver. Color Correct Utility and ICC profiles change color reproduction but should not be used to correct a physical offset between layers.
Step 2. Run the built-in automatic registration adjustment
The OKI C332dn automatically fine-tunes the position of the cyan, magenta and yellow images relative to the black image when it is turned on and after the top output tray is opened and closed. This is the manufacturer’s standard procedure and the first method for correcting misregistration.
- Complete all print jobs and wait for the READY status.
- Press the top cover release button and fully raise the output tray. Do not remove anything inside or touch the fuser unit, image drum or belt.
- Lower the output tray and press down firmly on both sides so that both latches close.
- Do not send any jobs while the printer performs its internal adjustment. Wait until the READY status returns.
- Print PRINT INFORMATION → DEMO PAGE again and compare the same areas with the first page.
If the colored outlines are now aligned, no additional settings are required. Do not assess a slight change in shade without any shift in the boundaries as the result of registration: the shade and the position of the color layers are different parameters.
Step 3. Perform registration adjustment from the menu
If opening and closing the tray did not help, start the same process manually. This command is located in the administrative menu.
- When the printer shows READY, press the MENU arrow button until ADMIN SETUP appears, and then press OK.
- Enter the current administrator password: use the arrow buttons to select a character and press OK to confirm it and move to the next position. The factory password for the C332dn/C332dnw is
999999. If it has been changed, use the password set by the administrator. Do not reset the printer settings solely because the password is unknown. - Open COLOR MENU.
- Select ADJUST REGISTRATION, then EXECUTE, and confirm the action by pressing OK.
- Wait until the operation is complete and the READY status appears. Do not open the covers or turn off the power during adjustment.
- Print a new internal demo page and compare it with the previous one.
Do not change adjacent settings at random
The ADJUST DENSITY and COLOR TUNING items, the highlight, mid-tone and dark settings, and the density values are not manual offsets for the cyan, magenta and yellow layers. They serve other purposes. Do not change them to remove a colored shadow, and do not reset all settings.
If there is visible improvement after the first manual run, you can repeat ADJUST REGISTRATION → EXECUTE once. If two consecutive runs produce the same poor result, further repetition usually provides no additional diagnostic information. Proceed to checking the type of defect and any recent work performed on the printer.
Step 4. Clean the LED heads only if printing is blurred or has white lines
A sharp colored outline offset by a constant distance should first be corrected by registration adjustment. LED head cleaning is required in a different situation: the print is unclear, the text is blurred or vertical white lines appear on the page.
- Wait until the printer stops. You do not need to turn off the device to clean the LED heads.
- Press the cover release button and fully open the top output tray.
- Gently wipe the surfaces of the LED heads with a clean, dry, lint-free cloth. Do not use a cloth that leaves fibers behind.
- Close the output tray and press down on both sides until it locks into place.
- Wait for the automatic adjustment and print an internal demo page.
Do not use alcohol or solvents
Do not clean the LED heads with methyl alcohol or other solvents: they damage the lens surfaces. Do not use household cleaners or compressed air, which can spread toner throughout the device.
Step 5. Check the installation of the image drum and belt if the defect appeared after servicing
This step is not required for everyone. Perform it only if the colored shadows appeared immediately after clearing a jam, replacing the belt unit, removing the common image drum unit or performing other work under the top cover. The C332dn uses a common image drum unit with four toner cartridges installed in it; instructions for models with four separate image drums do not apply here.
Before opening the print mechanism
Shut down the printer properly, disconnect the power cable and wait approximately 10 minutes: the fuser unit inside remains hot. Prepare a clean sheet of paper and a location away from direct sunlight. If you are not sure that you can hold the unit with both hands and reinstall it without tilting it, skip this step and contact a service center.
- Press the cover release button and fully open the top output tray. Do not touch the marked hot area of the fuser unit.
- Hold the common image drum unit by the provided handles and lift it together with the four toner cartridges. Do not remove the cartridges individually.
- Place the unit on a clean sheet of paper away from heat and bright light. Do not touch the green surfaces of the image drums. The manual limits their exposure to light to five minutes; if the check takes longer, protect the unit from light.
- Remove only a loose scrap of paper or an obvious foreign object that can be reached without tools. Do not wipe the transfer belt or touch its working surface.
- If the belt unit has not previously been removed, make sure that its two lock levers are in the rear locked position. Do not remove a working belt unit “for inspection”; proceed to installing the image drum unit.
- If the defect appeared immediately after the belt unit was removed or replaced and it needs to be reinstalled, pull the two lock levers upward and toward the front of the printer. Using only these levers, lift the belt unit without touching its working surface.
- Lower the belt unit so that the drive gear faces the rear of the printer. Align it with the gear at the rear right of the cavity, lower the unit evenly and turn both lock levers back to the locked position.
- Reinstall the image drum unit by its handles: the pins on both sides must fit into the slots at the sides of the printer cavity, and the unit must lower evenly without force or tilting.
- Close the output tray by pressing down on both sides, connect the power cable and turn on the printer.
- When the READY status appears, perform ADMIN SETUP → COLOR MENU → ADJUST REGISTRATION → EXECUTE, and then print a demo page.
Do not attempt to adjust the belt through a gap or press on its surface. If the belt unit is already installed, its lock levers are turned fully to the rear, the image drum unit is seated evenly and the top cover closes without force, do not remove the units again without a specific reason.
When service diagnostics are required
Stop attempting repairs yourself if the misregistration remains on the internal demo page after two registration adjustments and the correct reinstallation of a unit that was previously removed. The following signs are especially important:
- the same color is consistently offset by a noticeable distance, and calibration does not change the result at all;
- the colored outline is accompanied by repeating spots, scratches, the loss of one color or unusual mechanical noise;
- the belt has a visible crease, tear, deep scratch or other signs of damage, but there is no need to touch its surface for further inspection;
- the belt lock levers are broken, the image drum unit does not seat without force or the top cover does not latch on both sides;
- the display shows a print unit error that returns after the cover has been closed correctly.
For a service request, keep the two demo pages—before and after ADJUST REGISTRATION—and write down the event after which the defect appeared: transporting the printer, replacing the image drum, replacing the belt unit, clearing a jam or suddenly during ordinary printing. This information will allow a technician to distinguish an automatic registration failure from damage to the image drum, belt, drive or sensors. Do not enter the service menu, adjust hidden values or immediately purchase a full set of consumable units without this diagnosis.
