A Canon PIXMA MG2400 series multifunction printer may print documents normally but fail to scan. IJ Scan Utility does not detect the device, the Windows Scan app reports that no scanner is available, or communication error code 2,140,21 appears.
This usually means that Windows installed only the printer driver, while the scanner driver was not installed, was damaged after a system update, or cannot communicate with the multifunction printer via USB.
This guide applies to the following models:
Canon PIXMA MG2400, MG2410, MG2420, MG2440, MG2450, MG2460, MG2470, MG2480, and MG2490.
All the devices listed above belong to the Canon PIXMA MG2400 series family and use the same driver package for Windows.
Do not download a separate scanner driver from third-party websites
To restore scanning, use the official Canon MG2400 series MP Drivers package. When reinstalling it, disconnect the USB cable and connect the multifunction printer only after the “Connect Cable” window appears.
Why printing works but scanning does not
Windows registers the printing and scanning functions separately. Therefore, the printer driver may work even if the scanner component is missing or damaged.
The most common causes are:
- Windows automatically installed only the print driver;
- the Canon MG2400 series MP Drivers installation was interrupted;
- the USB cable was connected before the installer was started;
- the scanner driver was damaged after a Windows update;
- the Windows Image Acquisition service is stopped;
- the scanner is being used by another program;
- the multifunction printer is connected through a USB hub or a faulty adapter;
- the standard driver is being installed on a computer with an ARM processor.
Method 1. Restart the multifunction printer and check the USB connection
First, rule out a temporary communication failure. Scanning requires continuous data transfer from the multifunction printer to the computer. With an unstable connection, printing may sometimes continue to work while scanning ends with an error.
Step 1. Close scanning programs
- Close IJ Scan Utility.
- Close the Windows Scan app.
- Close Paint, image editors, and other programs that may be using the scanner.
- Wait a few seconds.
The scanner cannot be used by several programs at the same time. If it is already being used by one app, another program may report a communication error.
Step 2. Restart the multifunction printer
- Turn off the multifunction printer using the power button.
- Disconnect the USB cable from the computer.
- Wait approximately 20 seconds.
- Connect the USB cable directly to the computer.
- Turn on the multifunction printer.
- Wait until the green power indicator stops flashing.
Step 3. Check the cable and USB port
- Do not connect the multifunction printer through a USB hub, monitor, keyboard, or docking station.
- If you are using a desktop computer, try a USB port on the back of the computer case.
- Connect the cable to another USB port.
- If another working printer USB cable is available, try replacing the cable.
- If you are using a USB-C adapter, try another adapter or another USB-C port.
After reconnecting the device, test scanning. If the problem remains, proceed to the next method.
Method 2. Find and start IJ Scan Utility
IJ Scan Utility is a Canon program for scanning documents and photos. It is installed with the MP Drivers package.
Step 1. Find the program using Windows Search
- Click the Start button.
- Start typing:
IJ Scan Utility
- Click the IJ Scan Utility program in the search results.
If the program does not appear in the search results:
- Open the Start menu.
- In Windows 11, click All apps.
- Find the Canon Utilities folder.
- Open it.
- Start IJ Scan Utility.
Step 2. Select the correct device
- Turn on the multifunction printer.
- Make sure that the USB cable is connected to the computer.
- Open IJ Scan Utility.
- At the top of the window, find the device selection field or the Product Name field.
- Select Canon MG2400 series.
If several devices are displayed in the list, select the MG2400 series device connected via USB.
Step 3. Perform a test scan
- Lift the scanner cover.
- Place the document on the platen glass with the text or image facing down.
- Align the corner of the document with the mark in the corner of the platen glass.
- Close the cover.
- In IJ Scan Utility, click Document.
- Wait for scanning to finish.
For testing a document, it is better to use the Document button rather than Auto. Automatic mode may sometimes detect the size or number of items on the platen glass incorrectly.
If IJ Scan Utility is missing
If the program cannot be found through Search or in the Canon Utilities folder, the MP Drivers package may not have been installed completely. In this case, perform the complete reinstallation described below.
Method 3. Test scanning with Paint
Testing with Paint helps determine whether the Windows system scanner driver is working.
- Place a document on the platen glass.
- Click the Start button.
- Enter Paint.
- Open the program.
- Open the File menu.
- Select From scanner or camera.
- If a device selection window appears, select Canon MG2400 series.
- Select the image type.
- Click Preview.
- If the image appears, click Scan.
How to interpret the result
| Result | What it means |
| Paint scans, but IJ Scan Utility does not work | The main scanner driver is working. The problem is related to IJ Scan Utility or its settings. |
| The “From scanner or camera” option is unavailable | Windows does not detect a compatible scanner driver. |
| Neither Paint nor IJ Scan Utility detects the device | Check the WIA service and Device Manager, and reinstall MP Drivers. |
| The scanner appears and then disappears | There may be a problem with the USB cable, port, or adapter. |
Method 4. Test scanning with the Windows Scan app
The Windows Scan app uses the system scanning interface. If it detects the multifunction printer, the scanner driver is most likely installed.
Step 1. Open the app
- Click the Start button.
- Enter Windows Scan in the search box.
- Open the app found in the search results.
If the app is not installed, open Microsoft Store, find Windows Scan, and install it.
Step 2. Perform the test
- In the Scanner field, select Canon MG2400 series.
- In the Source field, select Flatbed.
- Select the required file type, such as JPEG or PNG.
- Click Preview.
- If the preview image appears, click Scan.
If Windows Scan works but IJ Scan Utility displays an error, reinstall IJ Scan Utility or the entire MP Drivers package.
Method 5. Check the scanner in Device Manager
Windows registers the printer and scanner separately. Therefore, the printing function may be present in Device Manager while the scanning component of the multifunction printer is missing.
Step 1. Open Device Manager
- Turn on the multifunction printer.
- Connect it directly to a USB port on the computer.
- Right-click the Start button.
- Select Device Manager.
Step 2. Find the scanner
Check the following sections:

- Do not use a complex docking station with many connected devices.
- Try a simple USB-C–to–USB-A adapter.
- If another adapter is available, test it.
- If possible, test scanning on a computer with a standard USB port.
Some adapters transfer data from older USB scanners unreliably. Therefore, printing may work while receiving an image ends with an error.
Important information for computers with ARM processors
The scanner driver may not work on Windows 11 ARM
The standard Canon MG2400 series MP Drivers package is designed for computers with Intel and AMD processors.
