Canon MG2400 Scans the Page Incorrectly or Does Not Save the File: Configuring IJ Scan Utility

Last Updated on 22.07.2026 by DriverNew

When scanning with a Canon PIXMA MG2400 series device, one page may be divided into several images, the edges of the document may be cut off, large white margins may appear around the text, or the completed image may be saved sideways.

Another situation is also possible: scanning finishes, but the file cannot be found or saved. Sometimes IJ Scan Utility reports that the user does not have permission to access the selected folder or displays error code 9,244,4.

This guide applies to the following models:

Canon PIXMA MG2400, MG2410, MG2420, MG2440, MG2450, MG2460, MG2470, MG2480, and MG2490.

All the devices listed above belong to the Canon PIXMA MG2400 series family and use the same IJ Scan Utility program.

For documents, use the “Document” button instead of “Auto”

Auto mode automatically detects the type and number of items on the platen glass. As a result, a page with large white areas, tables, separate text blocks, or images may be detected incorrectly. For a standard A4 or Letter sheet, it is better to select a fixed paper size and click Document.

Problems this guide can help resolve

  • one page is saved as several separate images;
  • only part of the document is scanned;
  • text near the edge of the sheet is cut off;
  • large white margins remain around the document;
  • the scanned page is rotated or skewed;
  • IJ Scan Utility detects the page size incorrectly;
  • scanning finishes, but the file cannot be found;
  • the file is not saved to the selected folder;
  • a message appears stating that access permission is unavailable;
  • error 9,244,4 occurs;
  • the error appears only when opening the result in My Image Garden.

Why IJ Scan Utility scans a document incorrectly

The buttons in the main IJ Scan Utility window are intended for different tasks. Auto mode automatically detects the type of original and the format of the saved file, while Document mode uses settings specifically intended for text documents.

An incorrect result usually appears for the following reasons:

  • the Auto button is used for an A4 sheet;
  • the wrong paper size is selected in the settings;
  • the document is not positioned straight on the platen glass or is not aligned with the mark;
  • the automatic cropping frame includes only part of the page;
  • several scanning frames have been created in ScanGear;
  • automatic rotation is enabled and detects the text orientation incorrectly;
  • an unavailable folder is selected for saving;
  • My Image Garden does not have access to the folder containing the results.

Method 1. Configure correct scanning for an A4 or Letter document

Start by creating separate settings for standard documents. Canon allows you to select the type of original, paper size, resolution, file format, and save folder manually.

Step 1. Position the document correctly on the platen glass

  1. Lift the scanner cover.
  2. Place the document with the text or image facing down.
  3. Align the upper corner of the sheet with the arrow mark in the corner of the platen glass.
  4. Make sure that the sheet is positioned straight and is not bent.
  5. Close the scanner cover.

Do not place important text directly at the very edge of the platen glass. A small area near the edges of the scanning surface may not be included in the final image.

Step 2. Open IJ Scan Utility

  1. Turn on the multifunction printer.
  2. Make sure that the USB cable is connected directly to the computer.
  3. Click the Start button.
  4. Enter IJ Scan Utility in the search box.
  5. Open the program found in the search results.

If the program does not appear in the search results:

  1. Open the Start menu.
  2. Find the Canon Utilities folder.
  3. Open it.
  4. Start IJ Scan Utility.

Step 3. Check the selected device

  1. Find the Product Name field at the top of the window.
  2. Make sure that Canon MG2400 series is selected.
  3. If another device is shown, open the list and select MG2400 series.

Step 4. Open the document scanning settings

  1. At the bottom of the IJ Scan Utility window, click Settings….
  2. On the left side of the window that opens, select Document Scan.

Step 5. Specify the document type and size

In the scan options section, set the following values:

  • Select SourceDocument;
  • Color ModeColor for a color document or Grayscale for standard text;
  • Paper SizeA4 or Letter, depending on the actual size of the sheet;
  • Resolution300 dpi for most documents.

A resolution of 300 dpi is sufficient for text, contracts, receipts, and standard images. A higher resolution increases the file size and scanning time.

Step 6. Configure saving

In the Save Settings section, select:

  • Data FormatPDF for documents or JPEG/Exif for a standard image;
  • Save in — an accessible folder, such as Documents or Pictures;
  • select the Check scan results and specify save settings checkbox.

The Check scan results and specify save settings checkbox allows you to review the image before it is finally saved, change the format, and rotate the page if necessary.

Step 7. Perform the scan

  1. Click OK to close the settings window.
  2. In the main IJ Scan Utility window, click Document.
  3. Wait until scanning is complete.
  4. Check the result in the window that appears.
  5. If the image looks correct, click the save button.

Method 2. Fix a situation where one page is divided into several images

This behavior most often occurs when the Auto button is used. The program attempts to detect separate items on the platen glass automatically and may treat text blocks, photos, or tables as several different documents.

  1. Close the window containing the incorrect result.
  2. Return to IJ Scan Utility.
  3. Click Settings….
  4. Select Document Scan.
  5. In the Select Source field, select Document.
  6. In the Paper Size field, select the actual size of the sheet, such as A4.
  7. Click OK.
  8. Click Document instead of Auto.

If you are using a non-standard sheet size:

  1. Open Settings….
  2. Select Document Scan.
  3. In the Paper Size field, select Custom.
  4. Specify the unit of measurement.
  5. Enter the document width and height.
  6. Click OK.

Method 3. Fix cropped edges or large white margins using ScanGear

If Document mode still cuts off part of the page or leaves margins that are too large, set the scanning area manually using ScanGear.

In ScanGear, the area that will be included in the final image is indicated by a cropping frame. You can move the frame and change its size. If several frames are created, each area may be saved as a separate image.

Step 1. Start ScanGear

  1. Open IJ Scan Utility.
  2. Make sure that Canon MG2400 series is selected in the Product Name field.
  3. Click the ScanGear button.

Step 2. Obtain a preview image

  1. In the window that opens, select Basic Mode if it is not already selected.
  2. Click Preview.
  3. Wait for the document image to appear.

Step 3. Adjust the scanning frame

  1. Find the frame around the image.
  2. Move the mouse pointer over the edge of the frame.
  3. While holding down the left mouse button, resize the frame so that the entire required document is inside it.
  4. If the frame is positioned incorrectly, place the pointer inside it and drag the frame to the required position.
  5. Make sure that important text is not outside the frame.

If several frames appear on the screen, leave one frame around the entire page. You can select and delete an unnecessary frame, and then define the document area again.

Step 4. Perform the scan

  1. Select a resolution of 300 dpi.
  2. Check the color mode.
  3. Click Scan.
  4. Wait until processing is complete.
  5. Save the resulting image.

Method 4. Fix a rotated or skewed page

IJ Scan Utility can automatically correct slight document skew and detect text orientation. However, handwritten documents, pages containing little text, unusual fonts, or patterned backgrounds may be rotated incorrectly. In this case, Canon recommends checking the result before saving and rotating it manually.

Enable skew correction

  1. Open IJ Scan Utility.
  2. Click Settings….
  3. Select Document Scan.
  4. Expand the Image Processing Settings section.
  5. Select the Correct slanted text document checkbox.

Configure automatic rotation

  1. In the same section, find Detect the orientation of text document and rotate image.
  2. Select the checkbox when scanning standard printed documents.
  3. Clear the checkbox if the program repeatedly rotates the image incorrectly.
  4. Select the Check scan results and specify save settings checkbox.
  5. Click OK.

After scanning, rotate the image manually in the scan results window if automatic orientation detection did not work.

Method 5. Change the folder where scanned files are saved

IJ Scan Utility saves documents to the folder specified in the Save in field. You can change this folder in the Settings (Document Scan) window.

If scanning finishes but the file cannot be found, first check the selected folder.

  1. Open IJ Scan Utility.
  2. Click Settings….
  3. Select Document Scan.
  4. Scroll down to the Save Settings section.
  5. Find the Save in field.
  6. Remember or write down the specified folder.
  7. Close the settings.
  8. Open File Explorer by pressing Windows + E.
  9. Go to the specified folder.

Files may be saved in:

  • Documents;
  • Pictures;
  • My Documents in older versions of Windows;
  • a folder that the user previously selected manually.

Method 6. Create a new folder for scans

If the current folder is unavailable, create a new local folder and select it in IJ Scan Utility.

Step 1. Create a folder

  1. Press Windows + E.
  2. Open the Pictures folder.
  3. Right-click an empty area.
  4. Select NewFolder.
  5. Enter the following name:
Scans
  1. Press Enter.

Step 2. Select the new folder in IJ Scan Utility

  1. Open IJ Scan Utility.
  2. Click Settings….
  3. Select Document Scan.
  4. Find the Save in field.
  5. Open the folder list.
  6. Select Add….
  7. In the window that opens, select PicturesScans.
  8. Confirm the folder selection.
  9. Click OK.

Step 3. Check whether the file is saved

  1. Place a document on the platen glass.
  2. In IJ Scan Utility, click Document.
  3. Wait until scanning is complete.
  4. Open PicturesScans.
  5. Check whether a new file appears.

Method 7. Fix error 9,244,4 or an access permission message

Users of the MG2450 have reported error 9,244,4, in which scanning was completed but the result was not saved. The problem was related to the program’s access to the destination folder.

Complete the following steps in order:

  1. Close IJ Scan Utility.
  2. Create a Scans folder inside the Pictures folder.
  3. Open IJ Scan Utility again.
  4. Click Settings….
  5. Select Document Scan.
  6. In the Save in field, select the new Scans folder.
  7. In the Application Settings section, select Do not start any application.
  8. Click OK.
  9. Scan again using the Document button.

Do not save the test file in a system or inaccessible folder

For testing, do not select the Windows or Program Files folders, the root of the system drive, a network folder, a disconnected external drive, or another user’s folder. Start by using the standard Pictures\Scans folder.

Method 8. Check folder permissions

If the new folder also does not accept files, check whether the current Windows account can write data to it.

  1. Open File Explorer.
  2. Go to the Pictures folder.
  3. Right-click the Scans folder.
  4. Select Properties.
  5. Open the Security tab.
  6. Select the name of your account.
  7. Check whether Write and Modify are allowed.

Inexperienced users are not advised to change complex system folder permissions manually. If the selected folder does not provide write permission, it is easier to create a new folder inside Documents or Pictures and select it in IJ Scan Utility.

Method 9. Disable automatic opening in My Image Garden

Sometimes the file is scanned and saved, but an error appears when the program attempts to open it automatically in My Image Garden. This may occur if the program does not have access to the selected folder.

  1. Open IJ Scan Utility.
  2. Click Settings….
  3. Select Document Scan.
  4. Scroll down to the Application Settings section.
  5. Select Do not start any application.
  6. Click OK.
  7. Perform a new scan using the Document button.
  8. Open the saved file manually from the Scans folder.

If the error disappears after My Image Garden is disabled, the scanner driver and IJ Scan Utility are working. The problem is related to the additional program or selected folder, not the multifunction printer itself.

Method 10. Check the available disk space

Scanning at a high resolution and saving multi-page PDF files may require a significant amount of free space.

  1. Press Windows + E.
  2. Open This PC.
  3. Find the system drive, usually Local Disk (C:).
  4. Check how much free space remains.

If there is almost no free space:

  • empty the Recycle Bin;
  • delete unnecessary files from the Downloads folder;
  • move large video files and archives to another drive;
  • scan again after freeing up space.

Method 11. Restore the default IJ Scan Utility settings

If you do not know which settings were changed, restore the default values.

  1. Open IJ Scan Utility.
  2. Click Settings….
  3. Select Document Scan.
  4. Click Defaults.
  5. Select A4 or Letter as the paper size again.
  6. Specify a new accessible save folder.
  7. Select the Check scan results and specify save settings checkbox.
  8. Click OK.
  9. Scan again using the Document button.

Method 12. Reinstall MP Drivers if the settings do not open

If IJ Scan Utility does not start, the required options are missing, or the program closes with an error, reinstall the official Canon MG2400 series MP Drivers package.

Step 1. Remove the old package

  1. Close IJ Scan Utility.
  2. Turn off the multifunction printer.
  3. Disconnect the USB cable from the computer.
  4. Open Windows Settings.
  5. Go to Apps.
  6. Find Canon MG2400 series MP Drivers.
  7. Click Uninstall.
  8. Follow the uninstaller instructions.
  9. Restart the computer.

Step 2. Download the official package

  1. Open the official Canon page:
    Download Canon MG2400 series MP Drivers
  2. Click the Download button.
  3. Save the file to the Downloads folder.
  4. Make sure that the filename begins with:
mp68-win-mg2400-

Step 3. Perform a clean installation

  1. Do not connect the USB cable.
  2. Right-click the downloaded file.
  3. Select Run as administrator.
  4. In the “Welcome” window, click Next >.
  5. In the “License Agreement” window, click Yes.
  6. Wait for the “Connect Cable” window.
  7. Connect the USB cable only after this window appears.
  8. Turn on the multifunction printer.
  9. Wait for the device to be detected and the installation to finish.

How to check the result

After completing the methods, perform a simple test:

  1. Place an A4 sheet straight on the platen glass, aligned with the mark.
  2. Open IJ Scan Utility.
  3. Select Canon MG2400 series.
  4. Click Settings….
  5. Select Document Scan.
  6. Set the paper size to A4 and the resolution to 300 dpi.
  7. Select the Pictures\Scans folder.
  8. Select the Check scan results and specify save settings checkbox.
  9. Select Do not start any application.
  10. Click OK.
  11. Click Document.

A correct result:

  • the page is saved as one file;
  • all text is inside the image;
  • the page orientation is correct;
  • the file appears in the Scans folder;
  • the access permission message no longer appears.
