The Canon MG2400 Installer Does Not Detect the Multifunction Printer or Displays “Driver is unavailable”

During installation of the Canon PIXMA MG2400 series driver, the program may stop at the “Connect Cable” window. The multifunction printer is already turned on and connected to the computer, but the installer continues waiting for a connection or reports that the device was not detected.

In another situation, Windows automatically adds the multifunction printer under Printers & scanners, but the “Driver is unavailable” message appears next to it. The device may not print, may not scan, or may appear several times in the system.

This guide applies to the following models:

Canon PIXMA MG2400, MG2410, MG2420, MG2440, MG2450, MG2460, MG2470, MG2480, and MG2490.

All the devices listed above belong to the Canon PIXMA MG2400 series family and use the same MP Drivers package for Windows.

How the problem appears

This guide will help in the following situations:

• the Canon installer continues to display the “Connect Cable” window after the multifunction printer is connected;
• Windows plays the USB connection sound, but the installation program does not continue;
• the computer does not respond to the multifunction printer connection at all;
• the installation ends with a message stating that the device was not detected;
• “Driver is unavailable” is shown under Printers & scanners;
• the multifunction printer appears in Windows but does not print;
• printing works, but the scanner is not detected;
• several copies of Canon MG2400 series appear in the device list;
• the problem occurred after Windows was updated or reinstalled.

Why the installer does not detect Canon MG2400 series

The most common causes are:

• the USB cable was connected before the installer was started;
• Windows automatically assigned an unsuitable driver to the device;
• the previous installation was interrupted;
• damaged components of the old driver remain in the system;
• a faulty USB cable is being used;
• the multifunction printer is connected through a hub, extension cable, or docking station;
• the selected USB port is not working;
• the multifunction printer is turned off or is in an error state;
• an installation file for another Canon series was downloaded;
• the standard driver is being run on a computer with an ARM processor.

Before you begin: check the installation file

For the models listed in this article, you must use the Canon MG2400 series MP Drivers package.

1. Open the official Canon page:
   Download Canon MG2400 series MP Drivers
2. Click the Download button.
3. Save the file to the Downloads folder.
4. Wait until the download is complete.
5. Check the filename. It should begin with:

mp68-win-mg2400-

The final part of the filename may change after Canon updates the package.

The installer supports multiple languages. It usually selects the language installed in Windows automatically. If necessary, you can change the language using the Language button in the “Welcome” window.

Method 1. Repeat the installation in the correct sequence

Start with this method. If the USB cable was connected beforehand or the installation was interrupted, close the program completely and repeat the procedure from the beginning.

Step 1. Cancel the current installation

1. If the “Connect Cable” window is open on the screen, click Cancel.
2. If a confirmation prompt appears, confirm that you want to close the program.
3. Wait until all Canon installer windows close.

Step 2. Disconnect the multifunction printer

1. Turn off the multifunction printer using the power button.
2. Disconnect the USB cable from the computer.
3. Leave the power cable connected to the electrical outlet.
4. Wait approximately 20 seconds.

Step 3. Restart the computer

1. Click the Start button.
2. Click the power button in the Start menu.
3. Select Restart.
4. Wait until Windows has fully loaded.

After restarting, do not connect the USB cable.

Step 4. Run the installation file

1. Press Windows + E.
2. Open the Downloads folder.
3. Find the file whose name begins with mp68-win-mg2400-.
4. Right-click the file.
5. Select Run as administrator.
6. If a “User Account Control” window appears, click Yes.

Step 5. Complete the initial installation stages

1. In the “Welcome” window, click Next >.
2. If the wrong language is selected, click Language and select the appropriate option.
3. In the “License Agreement” window, click Yes.
4. Wait for the “Connect Cable” window to appear.

Step 6. Connect the multifunction printer only when prompted

When the “Connect Cable” window appears:

1. Connect the almost square USB cable connector to the port on the back of the multifunction printer.
2. Connect the flat connector directly to a USB port on the computer.
3. Do not use a hub, splitter, monitor, or docking station.
4. Turn on the multifunction printer using the power button.
5. Make sure that the green power indicator lights up.
6. Wait several minutes.

After the device is detected, the “Connect Cable” window will close automatically. You usually do not need to click an additional button to continue.

If the installer continues waiting for the device, proceed to the next method.

Method 2. Check the USB cable and computer port

If the computer is not receiving data from the multifunction printer, reinstalling the driver will not help until the connection problem is resolved.

Step 1. Check the cable type

Canon MG2400 series requires a standard printer USB cable:

• the flat USB-A connector connects to the computer;
• the almost square USB-B connector connects to the multifunction printer.

A phone cable or a cable designed only for charging is not suitable.

Step 2. Connect the multifunction printer directly

1. Disconnect the USB cable from the hub, monitor, keyboard, or docking station.
2. Connect it directly to a USB port on the computer.
3. If you are using a desktop computer, try a port on the back of the computer case.
4. Do not use a USB extension cable.

Step 3. Try another USB port

1. Leave the “Connect Cable” window open.
2. Turn off the multifunction printer.
3. Disconnect the cable from the computer.
4. Wait 10 seconds.
5. Connect the cable to another USB port.
6. Turn on the multifunction printer.
7. Wait several minutes.

Step 4. Try another cable

If another working printer USB cable is available, replace the cable and repeat the connection.

A cable may be damaged even if it looks undamaged. Problems are especially common with long, sharply bent, or old cables.

Step 5. Check the multifunction printer’s status

1. Make sure that the green power indicator is lit.
2. If there is no power, check the electrical outlet and power cable.
3. If the orange Alarm indicator is flashing, resolve the multifunction printer error first.
4. Check whether the covers are closed.
5. Make sure that the cartridges are installed correctly.

Method 3. Check whether Windows responds to the connection

This check helps determine whether the problem is with the driver or the USB connection.

Step 1. Open Device Manager

1. Close the Canon installer.
2. Right-click the Start button.
3. Select Device Manager.

Step 2. Monitor the connection

1. Leave Device Manager open.
2. Turn off the multifunction printer.
3. Disconnect the USB cable from the computer.
4. Reconnect the cable.
5. Turn on the multifunction printer.
6. See whether the information in Device Manager changes.

If a new device appears

The USB cable and port are probably working. The problem may be related to an old or incorrectly installed driver.

The new device may appear under:

• Printers;
• Print queues;
• Imaging devices;
• Other devices;
• Universal Serial Bus controllers.

If a yellow exclamation mark appears

Windows detected the multifunction printer but could not install the correct driver. Remove the malfunctioning entry as described below.

If the list does not change at all

The computer is not receiving a signal from the multifunction printer. Check:

• another USB port;
• another printer cable;
• a connection without an adapter or hub;
• whether the multifunction printer works on another computer.

If the device is not detected on two computers using different working cables, the multifunction printer’s USB port may be faulty.

Method 4. Remove the incorrectly added printer from Windows

If the USB cable was connected before the official installer was started, Windows may have automatically added Canon MG2400 series with an incomplete driver.

Windows 11

1. Turn off the multifunction printer.
2. Disconnect the USB cable from the computer.
3. Click the Start button.
4. Open Settings.
5. Go to Bluetooth & devices.
6. Open Printers & scanners.
7. Find Canon MG2400 series, Canon MG2400 series Printer, or an unknown USB printer.
8. Click the device name.
9. Click Remove.
10. Confirm the removal.

Windows 10

1. Turn off the multifunction printer.
2. Disconnect the USB cable from the computer.
3. Click the Start button.
4. Open Settings.
5. Go to Devices.
6. Open Printers & scanners.
7. Select Canon MG2400 series or an unknown USB printer.
8. Click Remove device.
9. Confirm the removal.

If several identical Canon MG2400 series devices are listed, remove all copies.

After removing them, restart the computer and repeat the installation. Connect the USB cable only in the “Connect Cable” window.

Method 5. Remove the malfunctioning device in Device Manager

Windows may retain an incorrect multifunction printer entry even after the printer is removed from Settings.

Step 1. Show hidden devices

1. Disconnect the Canon USB cable from the computer.
2. Right-click the Start button.
3. Select Device Manager.
4. Open the View menu.
5. Select Show hidden devices.

Step 2. Find the Canon entries

Check the following sections:

• Print queues;
• Printers;
• Imaging devices;
• Other devices;
• Universal Serial Bus controllers.

The entry may be named:

• Canon MG2400 series;
• Canon MG2400 series Printer;
• Canon Scanner;
• USB Printing Support;
• Unknown USB Device;
• Unknown Device.

Step 3. Remove the malfunctioning entry

1. Right-click the entry.
2. Select Uninstall device.
3. If a checkbox for removing the driver software appears, select it.
4. Click Uninstall.
5. Remove other old Canon MG2400 series entries if they are present.
6. Close Device Manager.
7. Restart the computer.

After restarting, run the Canon installation file with the USB cable disconnected.

Method 6. Completely remove Canon MG2400 series MP Drivers

If the previous installation ended with an error, old MP Drivers components may prevent the multifunction printer from being detected again.

Removal in Windows 11

1. Disconnect the multifunction printer’s USB cable.
2. Open Settings.
3. Go to Apps.
4. Open Installed apps.
5. Enter Canon in the search box.
6. Find Canon MG2400 series MP Drivers.
7. Click the three-dot button.
8. Select Uninstall.
9. Follow the uninstaller instructions.

Removal in Windows 10

1. Disconnect the multifunction printer’s USB cable.
2. Open Settings.
3. Go to Apps.
4. Open Apps & features.
5. Enter Canon in the search box.
6. Select Canon MG2400 series MP Drivers.
7. Click Uninstall.
8. Confirm the removal.

If the list contains several identical Canon MG2400 series MP Drivers packages, remove them one at a time.

After removal:

1. Restart the computer.
2. Do not connect the USB cable.
3. Run the installation file as an administrator.
4. In the “Welcome” window, click Next >.
5. Accept the license agreement by clicking Yes.
6. Wait for the “Connect Cable” window.
7. Connect the multifunction printer and turn it on.

Method 7. Remove the driver package through Print Server Properties

Use this method if removing MP Drivers normally did not help and Windows continues to display the “Driver is unavailable” message.

1. Disconnect the Canon USB cable from the computer.
2. Remove all Canon MG2400 series copies from Printers & scanners.
3. Press Windows + R.
4. Enter the following command:

printui /s /t2

5. Click OK.
6. The “Print Server Properties” window will open on the Drivers tab.
7. Find Canon MG2400 series.
8. Select the driver.
9. Click Remove.
10. If a choice appears, select Remove driver and driver package.
11. Click OK.
12. Close the window.
13. Restart the computer.

What to do if Windows reports that the driver is in use

1. Close Word, the browser, PDF viewers, and other applications from which printing was performed.
2. Remove all Canon MG2400 series printers from Printers & scanners.
3. Restart the computer.
4. Run the printui /s /t2 command again.
5. Try removing the package again.

After cleaning the system, reinstall the official MP Drivers package.

If you are using a USB-C adapter

On modern laptops, Canon MG2400 series may be connected through a USB-C–to–USB-A adapter.

If the installer does not detect the multifunction printer:

1. Disconnect the adapter from the laptop.
2. Connect it to another USB-C port.
3. Do not use a complex docking station with several connected devices.
4. Try a simple USB-C–to–USB-A adapter.
5. If another adapter is available, test it.
6. If possible, connect the multifunction printer to a computer with a standard USB port.

Some adapters are designed mainly for charging or work unreliably with older USB printers.

If the multifunction printer connects and immediately disconnects

If Windows repeatedly plays USB connection and disconnection sounds:

1. Turn off the multifunction printer.
2. Disconnect the USB cable.
3. Connect the cable to another port.
4. Try another printer cable.
5. Do not use a USB extension cable.
6. Check whether the connector on the back of the multifunction printer is loose.

Repeated connection and disconnection usually indicates a problem with the cable, USB port, adapter, or multifunction printer connector.

Important information for laptops with ARM processors

To check the computer type:

1. Right-click the Start button.
2. Select System.
3. Find the System type line.

If ARM or ARM64 is shown, the problem may be caused by the absence of a compatible driver.

How to check the result

After reinstalling, complete the following steps:

1. Turn on the multifunction printer.
2. Make sure that the USB cable is connected directly to the computer.
3. Open Printers & scanners.
4. Find Canon MG2400 series Printer.
5. Make sure that the “Driver is unavailable” message is not displayed next to it.

Print a test page

1. Press Windows + R.
2. Enter:

control printers

3. Click OK.
4. Right-click Canon MG2400 series Printer.
5. Select Printer properties.
6. On the General tab, click Print Test Page.

Check the scanner

1. Click the Start button.
2. Enter IJ Scan Utility.
3. Open the program.
4. Make sure that Canon MG2400 series is selected.
5. Place a document on the platen glass.
6. Click Auto or Document.

If the test page prints and scanning works, the driver is installed correctly.
