Last Updated on 22.07.2026 by DriverNew

To print and scan with a Canon PIXMA MG2500 series multifunction printer, you need to install the MP Drivers package. It includes the printer driver, scanner driver, and components required for using the device via USB.

This guide applies to the following models:

Canon PIXMA MG2510, MG2520, MG2522, MG2525, MG2540, MG2540S, MG2541S, MG2550, MG2550S, MG2555, MG2560, MG2570, MG2570S, MG2577S, MG2580, MG2580S, and MG2590.

Model names and cartridge numbers vary depending on the country where the device is sold, but all the multifunction printers listed above belong to the Canon PIXMA MG2500 series and use the same driver package for Windows.

Do not connect the USB cable until prompted by the installer

Before starting the program, disconnect the multifunction printer’s USB cable from the computer. Connect the multifunction printer to the computer only when the “Connect Cable” window appears on the screen. If you connect the device beforehand, Windows may install an unsuitable or incomplete driver.

What you will need for the installation

  • A Canon PIXMA MG2500 series multifunction printer.
  • A computer or laptop running Windows 11 or Windows 10.
  • A printer USB cable.
  • The MP Drivers package downloaded from the Canon website.
  • A Windows account with administrator privileges.

MG2500 series models do not have built-in Wi-Fi. To install the driver, print, and scan, the multifunction printer must be connected to the computer using a USB cable.

A printer cable has one flat connector and one almost square connector. The square connector plugs into the multifunction printer, while the flat connector plugs into a USB port on the computer.

Step 1. Download the Canon MG2500 series driver

  1. Open the official Canon page:
    Download the Canon PIXMA MG2500 series driver
  2. Find the large red Download button on the page.
  3. Click the Download button.
  4. If the browser asks where to save the file, select the Downloads folder and click Save.
  5. Wait until the download is complete.

Why the MG2570S model is shown on the Canon page

The link opens a regional Canon support page, so its title may show the MG2570S model. This is not an error.

The page provides the common driver package for the MG2500 series family. After downloading it, make sure that the filename begins with mp68-win-mg2500-. The rest of the filename may change after the manufacturer updates the driver.

Step 2. Prepare the multifunction printer and computer

  1. Close Word, PDF viewers, browsers, and any other running applications.
  2. If the USB cable is already connecting the multifunction printer to the computer, disconnect the cable from the computer.
  3. Turn off the multifunction printer using the power button.
  4. Leave the multifunction printer’s power cable connected to the electrical outlet.
  5. Do not reconnect the USB cable yet.

If a previous attempt to install another driver was unsuccessful, it is advisable to restart the computer before continuing.

Step 3. Run the installation file

  1. Press Windows + E.
  2. Open the Downloads folder on the left side of the File Explorer window.
  3. Find the downloaded file whose name begins with mp68-win-mg2500-.
  4. Double-click the file with the left mouse button.
  5. Wait while the installer extracts the files. This may take some time.
  6. If a “User Account Control” window appears asking “Do you want to allow this app to make changes to your device?”, click Yes.

After the files have been extracted, the installation program should start automatically.

If nothing happens, right-click the downloaded file and select Run as administrator.

Step 4. Continue the installation in the “Welcome” window

The “Welcome” window will open. It states that the program will install the MP Drivers on the computer.

The installer supports multiple languages. The language is usually selected automatically according to the Windows display language.

  1. Make sure that the multifunction printer’s USB cable is still disconnected from the computer.
  2. If the text in the window is displayed in English, click Next >.
  3. If the installer opens in another language, click Language.
  4. Select English from the list and confirm your selection.
  5. After returning to the “Welcome” window, click Next >.

During the verified installation on Windows 10, it was not necessary to select a country, region, or connection method.

Step 5. Accept the license agreement

At the next stage, the “License Agreement” window will open.

  1. Read the Canon software terms of use if necessary.
  2. To continue the installation, click Yes.

If you click No, the driver installation will be canceled.

Step 6. Wait for the “Connect Cable” window to appear

After you accept the license agreement, the program will begin installing the required files.

At this stage:

  • do not connect the USB cable too early;
  • do not close the installer window;
  • do not turn off the computer;
  • do not run another printer installation program.

After a while, the “Connect Cable” window will appear.

Step 7. Connect the multifunction printer to the computer

The “Connect Cable” window will ask you to complete two actions:

  1. Connect the printer and computer using a USB cable.
  2. Turn on the printer.

Complete the actions in the following order:

  1. Connect the almost square USB cable connector to the port on the back of the multifunction printer.
  2. Connect the flat cable connector directly to a USB port on the computer.
  3. Do not connect the multifunction printer through a USB hub, splitter, or docking station.
  4. Press the power button on the multifunction printer.
  5. Make sure that the power indicator lights up.
  6. Wait for the program to detect the connected device.

The detection process may take several minutes. When the multifunction printer is detected, the “Connect Cable” window will close automatically.

Do not click “Cancel”

Do not click Cancel or disconnect the USB cable while the program is waiting to detect the multifunction printer. If you interrupt the installation at this stage, the driver may not be installed completely.

If the program does not detect the multifunction printer

If the “Connect Cable” window does not close within several minutes, complete the following steps:

  1. Make sure that the multifunction printer is turned on.
  2. Check whether an error indicator is flashing on the multifunction printer’s control panel.
  3. Make sure that the USB cable is firmly connected at both ends.
  4. Disconnect the cable from the computer.
  5. Wait approximately 10 seconds.
  6. Connect the cable to another USB port on the computer.
  7. If you are using a desktop computer, try a USB port on the back of the computer case.
  8. Do not use a USB hub or extension cable.
  9. If you have another working printer USB cable, try using it to connect the multifunction printer.
  10. After reconnecting the device, wait another few minutes.

If the device is still not detected, click Cancel, disconnect the USB cable, and restart the computer. After restarting, repeat the installation from the beginning.

Step 8. Complete the installation

After detecting the multifunction printer, the program will continue registering the printer and scanner drivers.

  1. Do not disconnect the cable or turn off the multifunction printer.
  2. Wait for a message confirming that the installation was completed successfully.
  3. If a Complete or Finish button appears, click it.
  4. If the program prompts you to restart the computer, save any open documents and agree to restart it.

  1. Click the Start button.

Step 11. Check the scanner

  1. Lift the scanner cover.
  2. Place the document on the platen glass with the text or image facing down.
  3. Align the corner of the document with the mark in the corner of the platen glass.

  8. Make sure that Canon MG2500 series is selected at the top of the window.
  9. Click the Auto or Document button.
  10. Wait for the scanning process to finish.

If IJ Scan Utility does not appear in the search results, open the Start menu, find the Canon Utilities folder, and run the program from there.

What to do if Windows added the printer beforehand

If the USB cable was connected before the installer was started, Windows may have automatically added the device with an unsuitable driver.

Signs of this problem include:

  • “Driver is unavailable” is displayed next to the printer;
  • the printer appears in the system but does not print;
  • printing works, but the scanner is not detected;
  • several identical printers appear in the list.

In this case:

  1. Disconnect the USB cable from the computer.
  2. Open Printers & scanners in Windows Settings.
  3. Select the previously added Canon MG2500 series device.
  4. Click Remove or Remove device.
  5. Restart the computer.
  6. Run the Canon installation file again.
  7. Connect the USB cable only after the “Connect Cable” window appears.
