When installing the Canon PIXMA MG2500 series driver, the program may stop at the “Connect Cable” window. The multifunction printer is turned on and connected to the computer, but the installer continues waiting for a connection, does not detect the device, or reports an error after a while.
Sometimes Windows plays the USB connection sound, but the Canon installation window does not close automatically. In other cases, the computer does not respond to the multifunction printer connection at all.
This guide applies to the following models:
Canon PIXMA MG2510, MG2520, MG2522, MG2525, MG2540, MG2540S, MG2541S, MG2550, MG2550S, MG2555, MG2560, MG2570, MG2570S, MG2577S, MG2580, MG2580S, and MG2590.
All the devices listed above belong to the Canon PIXMA MG2500 series family and connect to a computer using a USB cable.
The main installation rule
Do not connect the USB cable to the computer until the “Connect Cable” window appears. First, start the installer, click Next >, accept the license agreement, and connect the multifunction printer to the computer only when prompted by the program.
Why the Canon installer does not detect the multifunction printer
The most common causes are:
- the USB cable was connected before the installation program was started;
- Windows automatically installed an unsuitable or incomplete driver;
- the USB cable is faulty;
- the multifunction printer is connected through a USB hub, docking station, or extension cable;
- the selected USB port on the computer is not working;
- the multifunction printer is turned off or is in an error state;
- components from a previous unsuccessful installation remain in Windows;
- several copies of Canon MG2500 series are installed on the computer;
- the installation file for another Canon series was downloaded;
- the driver is being installed on a computer with an ARM processor, which may not be compatible with the standard Canon package.
Before you begin: check the installation file
You should use the Canon MG2500 series MP Drivers package for the installation.
- Open the official Canon page:
Download Canon MG2500 series MP Drivers - Click the red Download button.
- Wait until the download is complete.
- Check the filename. It should begin with:
mp68-win-mg2500-
Why the MG2570S model is shown on the download page
Canon uses a regional support page, so the MG2570S model is shown in its title. This is one of the models in the MG2500 series family.
After downloading, make sure that the installation filename begins with mp68-win-mg2500-. Do not use a file whose name contains mg2400 or another series.
The installation file supports multiple languages. The program usually selects the language installed in Windows automatically. If necessary, you can change the language using the Language button in the first installer window.
Method 1. Repeat the installation in the correct sequence
First, completely stop the current installation and repeat the connection process in the correct order.
Step 1. Close the installation program
- If the “Connect Cable” window is open on the screen, click Cancel.
- If a cancellation confirmation appears, confirm that you want to close the program.
- Wait until all Canon installer windows close.
Step 2. Disconnect the multifunction printer
- Turn off the multifunction printer using the power button.
- Disconnect the USB cable from the computer.
- Leave the power cable connected to the electrical outlet.
- Wait approximately 20 seconds.
Step 3. Restart the computer
- Click the Start button.
- Click the power button in the Start menu.
- Select Restart.
- Wait until Windows has fully loaded.
Step 4. Run the installation file again
- Do not connect the USB cable.
- Press Windows + E.
- Open the Downloads folder.
- Find the file whose name begins with
mp68-win-mg2500-. - Right-click the file.
- Select Run as administrator.
- If a User Account Control window appears, click Yes.
Step 5. Complete the initial installation stages
- In the “Welcome” window, click Next >.
- If the installer opens in the wrong language, click Language and select the appropriate option.
- In the “License Agreement” window, click Yes.
- Wait for the “Connect Cable” window to appear.
Step 6. Connect the multifunction printer only when prompted
When the “Connect Cable” window appears, complete the following steps:
- Connect the almost square USB cable connector to the port on the back of the multifunction printer.
- Connect the flat cable connector directly to a USB port on the computer.
- Turn on the multifunction printer using the power button.
- Make sure that the power indicator lights up.
- Wait several minutes.
When the device is detected, the “Connect Cable” window will close automatically. You do not need to click an additional button to continue.
Allow the program time to detect the device
Detecting the multifunction printer may take several minutes. Do not click Cancel, turn off the device, or disconnect the cable immediately after connecting it.
If the window does not close, proceed to the next method.
Method 2. Check the USB cable and computer port
If the computer does not respond to the multifunction printer connection at all, the most likely cause is a problem with the cable, USB port, or device power supply.
Step 1. Check the cable type
The Canon MG2500 series requires a printer USB cable:
- the flat USB connector connects to the computer;
- the almost square USB Type-B connector connects to the multifunction printer.
Step 2. Connect the cable directly
- Disconnect the cable from any USB hub, monitor, keyboard, or docking station.
- Connect it directly to a USB port on the computer.
- If you are using a desktop computer, try a port on the back of the computer case.
- If the computer has a standard USB 2.0 port, try using it.
Step 3. Try another USB port
- Leave the “Connect Cable” window open.
- Turn off the multifunction printer.
- Disconnect the cable from the computer.
- Wait 10 seconds.
- Connect the cable to another USB port.
- Turn the multifunction printer on again.
- Wait several minutes.
Step 4. Try another cable
If another working printer USB cable is available, replace the cable and repeat the connection.
A cable may be damaged even if it looks undamaged. Problems are especially common with long, sharply bent, or old cables.
Step 5. Check the multifunction printer’s power
- Make sure that the power indicator is lit.
- If the indicator is not lit, check the power cable and electrical outlet.
- If the error indicator is flashing, resolve the error before continuing the installation.
- Check that the cartridges are installed correctly.
- Make sure that the multifunction printer’s covers are closed.
If Windows does not play a sound when the device is connected to any USB port and nothing changes in Device Manager, the problem is most likely related to the cable, the multifunction printer’s USB port, or the device itself.
Method 3. Remove the printer automatically added by Windows
If the USB cable was connected beforehand, Windows may have added the multifunction printer before the official Canon package was installed. This entry can sometimes prevent the installer from detecting the device correctly.
Windows 11
- Disconnect the multifunction printer’s USB cable from the computer.
- Click the Start button.
- Open Settings.
- Go to Bluetooth & devices.
- Open Printers & scanners.
- Find Canon MG2500 series, Canon MG2500 series Printer, or an unknown USB printer.
- Click the device you found.
- Click Remove.
- Confirm the removal.
Windows 10
- Disconnect the multifunction printer’s USB cable from the computer.
- Click the Start button.
- Open Settings.
- Go to Devices.
- Open Printers & scanners.
- Select Canon MG2500 series or an unknown USB printer.
- Click Remove device.

After removing the device, restart the computer and repeat the installation. Connect the USB cable only when the “Connect Cable” window appears.
Method 4. Remove the malfunctioning device in Device Manager
If the printer is not listed under “Printers & scanners,” but Windows plays a connection sound, check Device Manager.
Disconnect other USB printers before removing the device
If other printers or scanners are connected to the computer, temporarily disconnect them. This will help prevent you from removing a device that is not related to the Canon MG2500 series.
Step 1. Open Device Manager
- Right-click the Start button.
- Select Device Manager.
- If a User Account Control prompt appears, click Yes.
Step 2. Find the Canon device
Check the following sections:
- Print queues;
- Printers;
- Imaging devices;
- Other devices;
- Universal Serial Bus controllers.
The malfunctioning device may be named:
- Canon MG2500 series;
- Canon MG2500 series Printer;
- USB Printing Support;
- Unknown USB Device;
- Unknown Device.
A yellow exclamation mark may be displayed next to it.
Step 3. Identify the device by connecting the cable
If it is unclear which entry belongs to the multifunction printer:
- Leave Device Manager open.
- Disconnect the Canon USB cable from the computer.
- See which entry disappears.
- Reconnect the cable.
- See which entry appears.
This entry belongs to the connected multifunction printer.
Step 4. Remove the malfunctioning entry
- Right-click the device.
- Select Uninstall device.
- If a checkbox for removing the driver appears, select it.
- Click Uninstall.
- Disconnect the USB cable from the computer.
- Close Device Manager.
- Restart the computer.
After restarting, run the Canon installer again and connect the cable only when the appropriate window appears.

If the driver was previously installed or the installation failed several times, remove the old Canon package before reinstalling it.
Windows 11
- Disconnect the multifunction printer’s USB cable.
- Click the Start button.
- Open Settings.
- Go to Apps.
- Open Installed apps.
- Enter Canon in the search box.
- Find Canon MG2500 series MP Drivers.
- Click the three-dot button next to the name.
- Select Uninstall.
- Follow the uninstaller instructions.
Windows 10
- Disconnect the multifunction printer’s USB cable.
- Click the Start button.
- Open Settings.
- Go to Apps.
- Open Apps & features.
- Enter Canon in the search box.
- Select Canon MG2500 series MP Drivers.
- Click Uninstall.
- Confirm the removal.
If the list contains several identical Canon MG2500 series MP Drivers packages, remove them one at a time.
After removal:
- Restart the computer.
- Do not connect the USB cable.
- Run the installation file as an administrator.
- Wait for the “Connect Cable” window.
- Connect the multifunction printer and turn it on.
Method 6. Remove the old driver package from the printing system
Use this method if removing MP Drivers normally did not help and the installer still does not detect the device.
Remove only the Canon MG2500 series driver
Do not remove drivers for other printers that you still use.
- Disconnect the Canon USB cable from the computer.
- Press Windows + R.
- Enter the following command:
printui /s /t2
- Click OK.
- The “Print Server Properties” window will open on the Drivers tab.
- Find the driver named Canon MG2500 series.
- Select it.
- Click Remove.
- Select the option to remove the driver and driver package if it is offered.
- Click OK.
- Close the Print Server Properties window.
- Restart the computer.
If Windows reports that the driver is in use, first remove all Canon MG2500 series printers from Printers & scanners, restart the computer, and repeat the removal.
Method 7. Check whether Windows detects the USB connection
This check helps determine whether the problem is in the installation program or the physical connection.
- Close the Canon installer.
- Open Device Manager.
- Turn off the multifunction printer.
- Disconnect the USB cable.
- Reconnect the cable.
- Turn on the multifunction printer.
- Watch the device list.
If a new device appears in the list
The USB cable and port are probably working. The problem may be related to an old or incorrectly installed driver. Follow the methods described above to remove the device and old MP Drivers.
If a device with a yellow exclamation mark appears
Right-click it, select Uninstall device, disconnect the cable, restart the computer, and reinstall MP Drivers.
If the list does not change at all
Windows is not receiving a signal from the multifunction printer. Check:
- another USB port;
- another printer cable;
- a connection without an adapter or hub;
- whether the multifunction printer works on another computer.
If the device is not detected on another computer either, the multifunction printer’s USB port may be faulty.
If you are using a USB-C adapter
Modern laptops may not have a standard USB-A port. In this case, the multifunction printer is connected through a USB-C adapter.
If the installer does not detect the device:
- Disconnect the adapter from the laptop.
- Connect it to another USB-C port.
- Do not use a complex docking station with many connected devices.
- Try a simple USB-C–to–USB-A adapter.
- If possible, test the cable and multifunction printer on a computer with a standard USB port.
Some adapters support charging only or work unreliably with older USB printers.
If the multifunction printer connects and then immediately disappears
If Windows repeatedly plays USB connection and disconnection sounds:
- Turn off the multifunction printer.
- Disconnect the USB cable.
- Connect the cable to another port.
- Try another cable.
- Do not use an extension cable.
- Check whether the connector on the back of the multifunction printer is loose.
Repeated connection and disconnection usually indicates a problem with the cable, port, or connector contact rather than an installation program error.
Important information for laptops with ARM processors
The standard driver may not install on Windows 11 ARM
The Canon MG2500 series MP Drivers package is designed for standard computers with Intel and AMD processors. The standard package does not include a separate ARM64 driver.
On a laptop with a Qualcomm Snapdragon X Elite, Snapdragon X Plus, or Microsoft SQ processor, the installer may continue waiting for the multifunction printer to be connected even if the USB cable is working properly.
You can check the system type as follows:
- Right-click the Start button.
- Select System.
- Find the System type line.
If the line shows ARM-based processor or ARM64, the problem may be related to the absence of a compatible driver.
How to interpret the check results
| What happens | Most likely cause |
| The computer does not respond to the connection at all | The cable, USB port, power supply, or multifunction printer connector |
| Windows plays a sound, but the installer continues waiting | An old device or incorrect driver in Windows |
| A yellow warning icon appears in Device Manager | The driver is installed incorrectly or is damaged |
| The device connects and immediately disappears | An unstable cable, port, or adapter |
| The multifunction printer is detected on another computer | A problem with Windows, the driver, or the first computer’s USB port |
| The multifunction printer is not detected on any computer | The cable or the multifunction printer’s USB port may be faulty |
Conclusion
If the Canon MG2500 series installer does not detect the multifunction printer, first cancel the installation, disconnect the USB cable, and restart the computer. Then run the MP Drivers package as an administrator and connect the device only after the “Connect Cable” window appears.
If this does not help, try another USB port and cable, remove the printer automatically added by Windows, clear the malfunctioning entry in Device Manager, and remove the old Canon MG2500 series MP Drivers.
If Windows does not respond to the multifunction printer connection at all, test the device with another cable and on another computer. This will help distinguish a driver problem from a USB connection fault.
