Canon TS9500 Series multifunction printers support automatic two-sided document printing and borderless photo printing. However, these two modes have different requirements and cannot be used at the same time.
After an unsupported paper size, photo paper, custom size, or borderless mode is selected, the Double-Sided option may disappear or become unavailable. When printing a photo, white borders may remain because of an incorrect page size, media type, or margins built into the document itself.
This guide applies to the following models:
- Canon PIXMA TS9540;
- Canon PIXMA TS9540A;
- Canon PIXMA TS9541C;
- Canon PIXMA TS9541CA;
- Canon PIXMA TS9550;
- Canon PIXMA TS9550A;
- Canon PIXMA TS9551C;
- Canon PIXMA TS9551CA.
On a Mac, the device usually appears under the common name:
Canon TS9500 series
The main steps apply to:
- macOS Tahoe 26;
- macOS Sequoia 15;
- macOS Sonoma 14;
- macOS Ventura 13;
- Mac computers with Apple silicon;
- Mac computers with Intel processors.
Two-sided printing and borderless printing are incompatible
If a size marked Borderless is selected, automatic two-sided printing becomes unavailable.
First, decide what you need: a document printed on both sides of plain paper or a one-sided photo printed without a white border.
Modes Supported by Canon TS9500 Series
| Mode | Supported Paper | How It Works |
|---|---|---|
| Automatic two-sided printing | A4, A5, B5, and Letter plain paper | The printer turns the sheet over automatically |
| Manual two-sided printing | Other suitable sizes, including A3 | The user turns the paper over and reloads it |
| Borderless printing | Supported sizes and photo paper | The image is enlarged slightly and extends beyond the edges of the sheet |
Paper Sizes for Automatic Two-Sided Printing
Automatic duplex printing is available for:
- A4;
- A5;
- B5;
- Letter.
For automatic two-sided printing, the media type must be:
Plain Paper
Automatic duplex printing is not intended for:
- A3;
- photo paper;
- envelopes;
- labels;
- magnetic paper;
- iron-on transfer paper;
- custom paper sizes;
- borderless printing.
Borderless Printing Sizes
Canon TS9550 Series supports borderless printing on the following sizes:
- A3;
- A4;
- Letter;
- 30 × 30 cm;
- 25 × 30 cm;
- 20 × 25 cm;
- 17.5 × 25 cm;
- 13 × 18 cm;
- 13 × 13 cm;
- 10 × 15 cm;
- 10 × 10 cm;
- 8.9 × 8.9 cm.
The available list may vary slightly depending on the regional model, selected media type, and Mac application.
Which Paper Is Suitable for Borderless Printing?
Canon recommends using supported photo paper, for example:
- Photo Paper Pro Platinum;
- Photo Paper Plus Glossy II;
- Photo Paper Pro Luster;
- Photo Paper Plus Semi-gloss;
- Glossy Photo Paper Everyday Use;
- Photo Paper Glossy;
- Matte Photo Paper;
- Restickable Photo Paper;
- Magnetic Photo Paper;
- supported photo stickers and greeting cards.
The list of available media types differs depending on the selected paper size.
Standard office paper is not the main media intended for high-quality borderless printing. When Plain Paper is selected, a Borderless option may be unavailable.
Difference Between Automatic and Manual Duplex Printing
Automatic Two-Sided Printing
The printer prints the first side, pulls the sheet back into the mechanism, turns it over internally, and prints the second side.
The user does not need to:
- remove the paper;
- turn the stack over;
- print even-numbered pages separately;
- determine the correct reloading direction.
Manual Two-Sided Printing
The pages are first printed on one side. The user then turns the sheets over, reloads them, and prints the second side.
Manual printing can be used for A3 and other sizes that do not support automatic duplex printing. However, it is recommended that you first perform a test using two sheets.
How to Load Paper for Automatic Two-Sided Printing
For standard documents, it is more convenient to use the lower cassette.
- Pull out the cassette.
- Move the paper guides apart.
- Load plain paper with the print side facing down.
- Move the guides against the edges of the stack.
- Do not load paper above the limit mark.
- Insert the cassette back into the printer.
- Register the correct paper size on the touchscreen.
- For the media type, select Plain Paper.
Supported plain paper can also be loaded in the rear tray. In this case, load it with the print side facing up.

Step 7: Enable Two-Sided Printing
In the main print window, find:
Double-Sided
Select one of the following:
- On — standard two-sided printing with long-edge binding;
- On (Short Edge) — short-edge binding;
- Off — one-sided printing.
Selecting Long-Edge or Short-Edge Binding
Long-Edge Binding
Use this option for a standard portrait document that should be turned like the pages of a book.
Examples:
- a contract;
- an essay;
- instructions;
- a report;
- a portrait-oriented book.
Short-Edge Binding
Use this option when pages should flip upward like a notepad or calendar.
Examples:
- a wall calendar;
- a top-bound notepad;
- a landscape-oriented presentation;
- a spreadsheet that is turned along the short edge.
Print two pages first
The page turning direction depends on the page orientation and selected binding edge.
Before printing a large document, check the first two pages to make sure the reverse side is not upside down.
Recommended Automatic Duplex Settings
| Setting | Recommended Value |
|---|---|
| Paper Size | A4 |
| Media Type | Plain Paper |
| Paper Source | Cassette or Auto Select |
| Double-Sided | On |
| Binding | Long Edge |
| Borderless Printing | Off |
If the Double-Sided Option Is Missing
Check the following possible causes.
An Unsupported Size Is Selected
Automatic duplex printing is unavailable for A3 and most custom sizes.
Select:
- A4;
- A5;
- B5;
- Letter.
A Borderless Size Is Selected
The paper size list may contain:
A4 Borderless
Replace it with standard A4.
Photo Paper Is Selected
Duplex printing is disabled when Photo Paper, Glossy, Matte, or another photo media type is selected.
Select Plain Paper.
A Custom Size Is Being Used
Automatic two-sided printing may be unavailable for a size created through Manage Custom Sizes.
Select standard A4, A5, B5, or Letter.
The Application Displays a Simplified Print Window
Scroll down through the print window and open the additional settings.
In some older macOS versions, click:
Show Details
The Wrong Printer Queue Is Selected
If the printer was added using a generic driver, an old driver for another model, or an incorrect network protocol, macOS may not display the full feature list.
Add the Canon printer again:
- Open System Settings → Printers & Scanners.
- Click Add Printer, Scanner, or Fax.
- Select the Canon device whose type is Bonjour Multifunction.
- In the Use field, select Secure AirPrint.
- If Secure AirPrint is unavailable, select AirPrint.
- Click Add.
Check two-sided printing through the new queue.
If the Option Is Visible but Cannot Be Enabled
- Select standard A4.
- Turn off borderless printing.
- Select Plain Paper.
- Turn off poster, booklet, or special multiple-page printing.
- Select a standard scale.
- Open the Double-Sided option again.
If the setting remains unavailable, quit the application by pressing Command + Q, open it again, and repeat the setup.
If the Reverse Side Is Upside Down
The wrong binding edge is selected.
For a Portrait Document
If the pages are turned like a book, select the standard On option or long-edge binding.
For a Landscape Document
Test both options on two pages. For many landscape documents, short-edge binding is correct.
After correcting the setting, do not continue the old print job. Cancel it and send the document again.
If the Second Side Prints in the Wrong Order
Check:
- the document page order;
- standard or reverse print order;
- booklet settings;
- even and odd page settings;
- the saved preset.
For standard automatic duplex printing, leave the normal page order selected.
If the Printer Pauses Between Sides
A short pause is normal. The printer waits for the ink to dry partially and then pulls the sheet back into the mechanism.
The following situations indicate a problem:
- the sheet exits completely and is not pulled back in;
- an error appears on the screen;
- the job remains stuck for several minutes;
- the paper jams during reverse feeding.
Check:
- whether plain paper is being used;
- whether the paper is too thick;
- whether the sheets are curled;
- whether an unsupported size is selected;
- whether a message appears on the touchscreen.
If Ink Smears on the Second Side
Possible causes:
- the paper is too thin;
- the image contains large solid areas of ink;
- the wrong media type is selected;
- the paper absorbs ink too slowly;
- the inside of the printer is dirty;
- the sheet is severely curled.
For testing:
- Use good-quality plain paper of a suitable weight.
- Select Plain Paper.
- Select standard quality instead of the highest quality.
- Do not use automatic duplex printing for photos or pages with heavy ink coverage.
- Perform Bottom Plate Cleaning if the reverse side becomes stained.
Manual Two-Sided A3 Printing on a Mac
Automatic A3 duplex printing is not supported. You can print on both sides manually.
Perform a test using two sheets
Different applications output pages in different orders. The reloading direction also depends on the rear tray and document orientation.
Do not begin a large print run until you have confirmed the correct way to turn the paper over.
Step 1: Print the Odd-Numbered Pages
- Load A3 paper in the rear tray.
- Register A3 and the correct media type.
- Open the document.
- Select File → Print.
- Select A3.
- Select Rear Tray.
- Turn off Double-Sided.
- Open the paper handling section.
- Select printing of odd-numbered pages only.
- Print two test pages first.
Step 2: Determine the Reloading Direction
- Wait until the ink is completely dry.
- Mark the top edge of the test sheet lightly with a pencil.
- Turn it over and reload it.
- Print one even-numbered page.
- Check the orientation and image position.
Step 3: Print the Even-Numbered Pages
After determining the correct direction:
- print all odd-numbered pages of the document;
- do not change the order of the sheets unless necessary;
- wait for the ink to dry;
- reload the stack in the tested direction;
- select even-numbered pages only;
- enable reverse order if necessary;
- start printing.
How to Enable Borderless Printing on a Mac
Step 1: Prepare the Image
For high-quality results, use an image with sufficient resolution and an aspect ratio close to the selected paper size.
If the aspect ratios differ, you must:
- crop part of the image;
- leave white borders;
- distort the image, which is not recommended.
Step 2: Load Photo Paper
- Open the rear tray.
- Move the paper guides apart.
- Load photo paper with the print side facing up.
- Move the guides against the edges.
- Close the feed slot cover.
- Register the paper size on the touchscreen.
- Select the actual photo paper type.
Step 3: Open the Print Window
- Open the photo or document.
- Select File → Print.
- Select Canon TS9500 Series.
Step 4: Select a Borderless Size
In the Paper Size field, select a size marked:
Borderless
For example:
A4 Borderless A3 Borderless 10 × 15 cm Borderless
Step 5: Select the Rear Tray
Open:
Media & Quality
In the paper source field, select:
Rear Tray
Step 6: Select the Actual Photo Paper
The media type selected on the Mac must match the media type registered on the printer.
Do not select Plain Paper for glossy photo paper.
Step 7: Turn Off Two-Sided Printing
Make sure:
Double-Sided
is set to:
Off
Step 8: Check the Preview
Make sure important elements are not positioned directly against the edge.
During borderless printing, the printer enlarges the image. A small part of the photo extends beyond the physical edges of the paper and is not printed.
Why the Edges of a Photo Are Cropped
This is a normal characteristic of borderless printing.
To ensure that no white strips remain, the printer:
- enlarges the image slightly;
- positions it beyond the edges of the sheet;
- prints only the area that physically falls on the paper.
As a result, the following may be cropped:
- part of a person’s head near the edge;
- a thin border;
- the photo date;
- a signature;
- a logo;
- small text.
How to Reduce Unwanted Cropping
- do not place important elements near the edge;
- crop the photo in advance to match the paper’s aspect ratio;
- leave an internal safe area;
- use the print preview;
- if the composition is critical, print with small borders and trim the sheet manually.
Why White Borders Remain on the Photo
A Standard Size Is Selected Instead of Borderless
Make sure the selected size is not simply A4 or 10 × 15 cm, but the version marked Borderless.
The Image Itself Contains a White Border
The printer does not remove white areas that are part of the file.
Open the image in an editor and crop the built-in white border.
The Application Adds Margins
Microsoft Word, a browser, or a document editor may preserve its own page margins.
Borderless mode removes the printer’s hardware margins but does not always remove blank areas inside the document.
The Aspect Ratios Do Not Match
For example, a 4:3 photo and 10 × 15 cm paper have different aspect ratios. The application must either crop the image or leave blank strips.
Select a fill-page mode that crops the image, or prepare the photo in advance.
The Wrong Media Type Is Selected
When Plain Paper is selected, borderless printing may be unavailable or may not work correctly.
The Wrong Printer Queue Is Being Used
Add the Canon printer as Bonjour Multifunction with Secure AirPrint.
If a Borderless Size Is Missing
Check:
- whether Canon TS9500 Series is selected;
- whether an AirPrint queue is being used;
- whether the selected paper size supports borderless printing;
- whether photo paper is selected;
- whether two-sided printing is turned off;
- whether a custom size is being used;
- whether the specific application limits the available settings.
Add the Printer Again
- Do not remove the working queue in advance.
- Open System Settings → Printers & Scanners.
- Click Add Printer, Scanner, or Fax.
- Select Bonjour Multifunction.
- Select Secure AirPrint.
- Add the new queue.
- Quit and reopen the printing application completely.
- Check the paper size list through the new queue.
Borderless Photo Printing Through Photos
- Open the Photos app.
- Select the required image.
- Select File → Print.
- Select Canon TS9500 Series.
- Select a photo format or custom fill.
- Open the additional print settings.
- Select a Borderless paper size.
- Select Rear Tray.
- Select the actual photo paper type.
- Check the photo cropping.
- Click Print.
Borderless Printing Through Preview
- Open the photo in Preview.
- Select File → Print.
- Select the Canon printer.
- Select a paper size marked Borderless.
- Check the orientation.
- Configure the scale.
- Select Media & Quality.
- Select Rear Tray.
- Select the photo paper type.
- Check the print preview.
- Start printing.
Printing a Borderless Word Document
Microsoft Word is designed primarily for text documents and uses page margins. Even when Borderless is selected, the text may not reach the edges.
To prepare a full-page sheet:
- Open the layout settings tab.
- Set the correct page size.
- Reduce the document margins.
- Extend the background or image to the edges of the page.
- Save the document as a PDF.
- Open the PDF in Preview.
- Print it using Borderless mode.
Word may warn that the margins are outside the printable area. In borderless mode, this warning does not always indicate a printer malfunction.
Borderless PDF Printing
First, check the PDF itself. If the page already contains a white border, the printer will reproduce it as part of the document.
- Open the PDF in Preview.
- Check the page edges.
- Select File → Print.
- Select a Borderless size.
- Use the option to fill the entire page.
- Check how the content is cropped.
Support Code 2113 or 2114
The error occurs when the paper size or media type in the print job does not match the information registered on the printer.
Example:
| Setting | On the Mac | On the Canon Printer |
|---|---|---|
| Size | A4 Borderless | A4 |
| Type | Photo Paper Plus Glossy II | Plain Paper |
Solution
- Check the paper that is actually loaded.
- Register the correct paper size on the Canon display.
- Register the actual media type.
- Select the same paper size on the Mac.
- Select the same media type.
- Repeat printing.
If Borderless Printing Stains the Paper Edges
In Borderless mode, ink is applied slightly beyond the edges of the sheet. If the wrong paper is used, the sheet is severely curled, or too much ink is applied, the edges may become stained.
Check:
- whether suitable photo paper is being used;
- whether the selected media type matches the paper;
- whether the sheet is flat;
- whether the corners are folded;
- whether the inside of the printer is dirty;
- whether the correct side of the paper is facing up.
After printing, do not stack the photos until they are completely dry.
If the Colors Near the Edges Are Uneven
Borderless printing may produce slight color unevenness, especially if the selected media type does not match the actual paper.
For testing:
- Select the exact photo paper type.
- Use genuine Canon paper or high-quality compatible paper.
- Check the nozzles.
- Perform print head cleaning if the nozzle check pattern contains missing areas.
- Print one test sheet again.
If the Image Prints Too Large
This may occur when several enlargement options are used at the same time:
- Borderless mode;
- a scale greater than 100%;
- the option to fill the page;
- automatic cropping in the Photos app.
Use only one enlargement method. Borderless mode with the standard page fill setting is usually sufficient.
If the Image Is Distorted
Do not stretch a photo separately by width and height.
Correct options include:
- cropping the unnecessary part of the image;
- leaving borders;
- selecting paper with a suitable aspect ratio.
Disproportionate stretching will distort faces, circles, and other objects.
If the Settings Reset After Every Print Job
Create separate presets:
- Canon A4 — Double-Sided;
- Canon A4 — One-Sided;
- Canon 10 × 15 — Borderless Photo;
- Canon A3 — Borderless Photo.
Save a Preset
- Configure the print settings.
- Open the presets list.
- Select the option to save the current settings.
- Enter a clear name.
- Specify which printer should use the preset.
Always check the loaded paper size and media type before printing.
If Duplex Printing Works from Preview but Not from Word or Another Application
This means the printer and AirPrint support the feature. The problem is in the application settings.
Try:
- opening the complete system print dialog;
- selecting standard A4;
- selecting Plain Paper;
- turning off Borderless mode;
- deleting the old preset;
- saving the document as a PDF and printing it through Preview.
If Borderless Works from Photos but Is Missing in Word
Some applications do not display all photo settings or use their own page configuration.
Save the document as a PDF or image and print it through:
- Preview;
- Photos;
- another application that supports full-page photo printing.
Update the AirPrint Queue
If both duplex and Borderless options are missing:
- Make sure the correct model is selected.
- Add a new Bonjour Multifunction queue.
- Select Secure AirPrint.
- Restart the application.
- Check the functions through the new printer entry.
- Remove the old queue only after successful testing.
Do Not Install an Old Driver as the First Step
Canon TS9500 Series supports macOS system printing through AirPrint. An old package may:
- not support the current macOS version;
- not support Apple silicon;
- create a second printer queue;
- hide some current settings;
- be blocked by macOS security.
Correct the Secure AirPrint queue and paper settings first.
When the Problem Is Not Related to the Mac
macOS settings will not help if:
- the printer cannot pick up paper;
- the sheet jams every time it is pulled back in;
- the rollers do not turn the paper over;
- a hardware error appears on the touchscreen;
- a foreign object is inside the printer;
- the rear tray is damaged;
- the printer cannot print its internal test pages.
When a Service Center Is Required
Contact a service center if:
- every two-sided print job causes a paper jam;
- the sheet is not pulled back into the printer;
- the mechanism makes cracking or grinding noises;
- a support code repeatedly appears on the display;
- the paper tears inside the mechanism;
- borderless printing continuously contaminates the inside of the printer;
- the problem occurs with different types of known-good paper;
- there is a smell of overheating.
