Canon TS9500 Series multifunction printers support printing documents, spreadsheets, drawings, photos, and posters on A3 paper. However, after a job is sent from a Mac, the printer may continue using A4, report a paper mismatch, feed paper from the lower cassette, or fail to start printing altogether.
The problem usually occurs because A3 is selected only in the document but not in the macOS print window, or because the paper is loaded into the wrong source. For A3, you must use the rear tray and register the correct paper size and media type on the printer’s touchscreen.
This guide applies to the following models:
- Canon PIXMA TS9540;
- Canon PIXMA TS9540A;
- Canon PIXMA TS9541C;
- Canon PIXMA TS9541CA;
- Canon PIXMA TS9550;
- Canon PIXMA TS9550A;
- Canon PIXMA TS9551C;
- Canon PIXMA TS9551CA.
In macOS, the printer may appear under the common name:
Canon TS9500 series
The main steps apply to macOS Tahoe 26, macOS Sequoia 15, macOS Sonoma 14, and macOS Ventura 13, as well as Mac computers with Apple silicon and Intel processors.
A3 paper must be loaded only in the rear tray
The lower cassette is intended for A4, A5, B5, and Letter plain paper. An A3 sheet must not be folded, trimmed, or forced into the cassette.
After loading A3 paper, be sure to register A3 and the actual media type on the printer’s touchscreen.
A3 Paper Size
The standard A3 size is:
297 × 420 mm
It has twice the area of A4.
Do not confuse the following sizes:
| Size | Dimensions | Support |
|---|---|---|
| A3 | 297 × 420 mm | Supported |
| A4 | 210 × 297 mm | Supported |
| A3+ | Usually 329 × 483 mm | Not a standard size supported by this series |
If an application displays both A3 and A3+, select standard A3.
Paper Sources Available on Canon TS9500 Series
The printer has two main paper sources:
- rear tray;
- lower cassette.
Rear Tray
Used for:
- A3 plain paper;
- photo paper;
- supported thick paper;
- square paper;
- envelopes;
- supported custom-size media.
Lower Cassette
Intended only for plain paper in the following sizes:
- A4;
- A5;
- B5;
- Letter.
A3 printing from the lower cassette is not possible.
How Many A3 Sheets Can Be Loaded?
Up to 50 sheets of A3 plain paper can be loaded in the rear tray. The actual number depends on the paper weight, condition, and coating.
For the initial test, it is recommended that you load only one or a few sheets. This makes it easier to diagnose feeding problems and prevents an entire pack from being damaged if the settings are incorrect.
The permitted quantity is considerably lower for photo paper and thick media. Follow the limitations stated on the paper packaging and in the Canon manual.
Prepare the A3 Paper
- Use flat, dry sheets.
- Do not load paper with folded corners.
- Align the edges of the stack.
- If the paper is curled, flatten it carefully.
- Check which side is intended for printing.
Both sides of standard office paper are usually identical. Photo paper may have a glossy, semi-gloss, or specially coated printable side.
How to Load A3 Correctly in the Rear Tray
- Turn on the Canon printer.
- Wait for the Home screen to appear.
- Open the rear tray cover.
- Raise and extend the paper support.
- Open the feed slot cover.
- Move the left and right paper guides apart.
- Load A3 paper with the print side facing up.
- Position the sheets in the center of the rear tray.
- Move the paper guides against the edges of the paper.
- Do not press the guides too tightly against the sheets.
- Slowly close the feed slot cover.
Paper is always loaded in portrait orientation relative to the feed mechanism. This rule applies even when the document itself will be printed in landscape orientation.
Do not turn the A3 sheet sideways in the tray
Landscape orientation is selected in the application on the Mac. The sheet itself must still be loaded in the rear tray with the short edge facing the printer.
Loading the paper sideways may cause incorrect feeding or a paper jam.
Register the Paper on the Touchscreen
After the feed slot cover is closed, the rear tray paper registration screen should appear on the printer.
- Check the displayed paper size.
- If A3 is not displayed, tap Change.
- Select A3.
- Select the actual media type.
- Confirm the settings.
For Plain Paper
Select:
Size: A3 Type: Plain paper
For Photo Paper
Select the media type that matches the loaded paper. For example:
- Photo Paper Plus Glossy II;
- Photo Paper Pro Platinum;
- Photo Paper Pro Luster;
- Photo Paper Plus Semi-gloss;
- Matte Photo Paper.
If compatible third-party paper is being used, select the closest supported media type according to the paper manufacturer’s instructions.
Open the Paper Output Tray
Before printing:
- raise the operation panel;
- pull out the paper output tray;
- extend the paper output support;
- make sure there is enough free space in front of the printer.
If the operation panel is closed, the printer may not start printing.
An A3 sheet is longer than A4. Make sure there is no wall, box, or other obstacle in front of the multifunction printer.
Main Method for Printing A3 on a Mac
Step 1: Open the Document
Open the document in the required application, for example:
- Preview;
- Pages;
- Microsoft Word;
- Microsoft Excel;
- Adobe Acrobat Reader;
- Adobe Photoshop;
- Safari or Chrome.
Step 2: Open the Print Window
Select:
File → Print
You can also press:
Command + P
Step 3: Select the Correct Canon Printer
In the Printer field, select the working Canon TS9500 Series queue.
If several identical entries are listed, it is preferable to use the queue added as:
Bonjour Multifunction → Secure AirPrint
Do not select:
- an old queue with an Offline status;
- a printer added for a different connection;
- a driver intended for another Canon model;
- virtual PDF printing.
Step 4: Select A3
Open the Paper Size list and select:
A3
Do not select A4, A3+, or a custom size instead of standard A3.
Step 5: Select the Orientation
Select:
- Portrait — for a vertical page;
- Landscape — for a horizontal page.
The orientation changes how the image is positioned, but it does not change the direction in which the sheet is loaded in the rear tray.
Step 6: Select the Rear Tray
Scroll down through the print window settings and open:
Media & Quality
Find the following field:
Feed From
Select:
Rear Tray
If only Auto Select is available, macOS should choose the rear tray automatically because A3 is not supported by the lower cassette. If the problem occurs repeatedly, it is better to select the rear tray explicitly.
Step 7: Select the Media Type
In Media & Quality, select the same media type that is registered on the Canon touchscreen.
For a standard document:
Plain Paper
For a photo, select the actual type of photo paper.
Step 8: Check the Scale
For a document already created in A3, you should usually select:
Scale: 100%
If the original document is A4 and must be enlarged to A3, use the option to fit it to the paper size.
Step 9: Start Printing
- Check the print preview.
- Make sure the image is not cropped.
- Check the number of copies.
- Click Print.
- Check the Canon touchscreen.
- If a prompt appears, confirm the correct paper.
Recommended Settings for a Standard A3 Document
| Setting | Value |
|---|---|
| Printer | Canon TS9500 Series AirPrint |
| Paper Size | A3 |
| Paper Source | Rear Tray |
| Media Type | Plain Paper |
| Scale | 100% |
| Two-Sided Printing | Off |
How to Enlarge an A4 Document to A3
If the original PDF or document was created in A4, simply selecting A3 does not always enlarge the content. Some applications place the A4 page in the center of the larger sheet without changing the scale.
Through Preview
- Open the PDF in Preview.
- Select File → Print.
- Select Canon TS9500 Series.
- Select A3 as the paper size.
- Find the scaling section.
- Select the option to fit the content to the paper size.
- Select A3 as the destination paper size.
- Select the option to print the entire image.
- Check the preview.
- Click Print.
Do not select an option that fills the entire paper if important text is located near the edges of the document. This mode may crop part of the image.
Manual Scale
The theoretical scale for enlarging A4 to A3 is approximately 141%. However, it is better to use the application’s automatic fitting option because it accounts for the printer’s non-printable margins.
How to Print A3 from Microsoft Word
Change the Document Size First
- Open the document.
- Go to the Layout tab.
- Open the Size menu.
- Select A3.
- Check the margins and text layout.
After the page size is changed, tables, images, and line breaks may move. Check the entire document before printing.
Then Open the Print Window
- Select File → Print.
- Select Canon TS9500 Series.
- Check that A3 is selected.
- Open the macOS system print dialog if Word displays only limited settings.
- Under Media & Quality, select Rear Tray.
- Select the correct media type.
- Start printing.
How to Print A3 from Pages
- Open the Pages document.
- Select File → Page Setup if the command is available.
- In the paper size field, select A3.
- Select portrait or landscape orientation.
- Check the position of the text and images.
- Select File → Print.
- Select the Canon printer.
- Check A3, Rear Tray, and the media type.
How to Print an A3 Spreadsheet from Excel
A large spreadsheet may automatically be divided across several A4 sheets. You must change the page settings.
- Open the spreadsheet.
- Go to the page layout settings.
- Select A3.
- Select landscape orientation for a wide table.
- Configure the margins.
- Specify the print area.
- If necessary, configure all columns to fit on one page wide.
- Open the print preview.
- Select the Canon printer and Rear Tray.
- Start printing.
Excessive reduction may make the text unreadable. In some cases, it is better to divide the spreadsheet across two A3 pages.
How to Print an A3 PDF from Adobe Acrobat Reader
- Open the PDF.
- Select File → Print.
- Select Canon TS9500 Series.
- Check the actual page size of the PDF.
- For a ready-made A3 document, select Actual size or 100% scale.
- For an A4 document, select the option to fit it to the A3 page.
- Open the macOS system print dialog.
- Select A3.
- Select Rear Tray.
- Check the preview.
- Click Print.
If A3 Is Missing from macOS
A3 should appear automatically in a correctly configured AirPrint queue.
Do not create a custom A3 size as the first step. Standard A3 is a normal paper size that should be provided by the printer.
Check the Selected Printer
- Open the print window.
- Check the Printer field.
- Select Canon TS9500 Series.
- Open the paper size list again.
When another printer is selected, macOS displays only the paper sizes supported by that device.
Expand the Print Window
In current macOS versions, additional settings may be located below the main part of the window.
- Scroll down through the window.
- Open all available sections.
- Find Paper Size.
Quit and Reopen the Application
An application that was running before the new printer queue was added may continue using an old list of printer capabilities.
- Close the document.
- Quit the application completely by pressing Command + Q.
- Start the application again.
- Open the document again.
- Check the paper size list.
Add a New AirPrint Queue
- Open System Settings → Printers & Scanners.
- Click Add Printer, Scanner, or Fax.
- Select the Canon device whose type is Bonjour Multifunction.
- In the Use field, select Secure AirPrint.
- If Secure AirPrint is unavailable, select AirPrint.
- Add the device.
- Repeat printing through the new queue.
If A3 appears in the new queue, remove the old incorrect entry.
Do Not Create a Custom A3 Size Unless Necessary
The Manage Custom Sizes command is intended for non-standard sheets, not for restoring the missing standard A3 size.
Manually creating a 297 × 420 mm size may:
- conflict with the custom-size limitations of this model;
- fail to enable the correct paper source;
- create incorrect margins;
- cause the image to be cropped;
- fail to resolve the paper registration error.
If A3 is missing, correct the printer queue first.
If the Printer Continues Feeding A4 from the Cassette
Possible causes:
- A4 is selected in the print window;
- the paper source is set to the cassette;
- the document was created in A4;
- an old printer queue is being used;
- the wrong rear tray paper size is registered on the printer;
- AirPrint selected the paper source automatically based on mismatched settings.
Solution
- Cancel the print job.
- Open the document again.
- Select A3.
- Open Media & Quality.
- Select Rear Tray.
- Select the correct media type.
- On the Canon screen, register A3 and the same media type.
- Repeat printing.
Support Code 2114 When Printing A3
Support Code 2114 means that the print job settings do not match the paper information registered for the rear tray.
Example:
| Setting | Size | Type |
|---|---|---|
| Job from the Mac | A3 | Plain Paper |
| Rear tray information | A4 | Plain Paper |
Or:
| Setting | Size | Type |
|---|---|---|
| Job from the Mac | A3 | Photo Paper |
| Rear tray information | A3 | Plain Paper |
Correct Way to Resolve 2114
- Do not click Print again on the Mac.
- Check the message on the Canon touchscreen.
- Check the sheet that is actually loaded.
- If the wrong paper is loaded, replace it.
- Register A3 on the printer.
- Register the actual media type.
- Check the same values on the Mac.
- Continue printing.
“Print on Set Paper” Option
The printer may offer the option to continue printing without changing the job settings.
Use this option only when you understand the consequences. If the job is designed for A3 but A4 is loaded, part of the image may be reduced, cropped, or printed incorrectly.
It is safer to make the job settings match the registered paper information.
Support Code 2113
Support Code 2113 is also related to a paper setting mismatch. It may appear when the printer compares the print job settings with the information registered for the available paper sources.
Check:
- the paper size on the Mac;
- the media type;
- the selected paper source;
- the rear tray information;
- the lower cassette information.
Always select the rear tray for A3.
If the “No Paper” Message Appears
Check:
- whether the sheet is inserted far enough;
- whether the feed slot cover is closed;
- whether the paper guides touch the paper;
- whether the paper is loaded sideways;
- whether the sheets are excessively curled;
- whether Rear Tray is selected;
- whether a foreign object is inside the tray.
Reload the Paper
- Cancel the print job.
- Remove the paper.
- Align the edges.
- Move the paper guides apart.
- Load one sheet with the print side facing up.
- Move the guides against the paper.
- Close the feed slot cover.
- Register A3.
- Repeat printing.
If the A3 Image Is Cropped
Possible causes:
- the document and paper have different sizes;
- a scale greater than 100% is selected;
- the option to fill the entire page is being used;
- borderless printing is enabled;
- the orientation is incorrect;
- the application uses non-standard margins;
- the PDF page size is not A3.
Check the Settings
- Open the print preview.
- Check the size of the original document.
- For a ready-made A3 document, set the scale to 100%.
- Turn off borderless printing.
- Select the option to print the entire image.
- Check portrait or landscape orientation.
If the Document Has Excessively Large Margins
Possible causes:
- an A4 page is being printed on A3 at 100% scale;
- fit-to-paper scaling is disabled;
- the original PDF contains wide margins;
- the wrong page size is selected in the application;
- the application preserves the original image size.
To enlarge A4 to A3, enable scaling to the paper size.
Borderless A3 Printing
Canon TS9500 Series supports borderless A3 printing with compatible media types.
Load Photo Paper
- Open the rear tray.
- Load A3 photo paper with the print side facing up.
- Move the paper guides against the sheet.
- Close the feed slot cover.
- Register A3.
- Select the actual photo paper type.
Configure the Mac
- Open the image or document.
- Select File → Print.
- Select the Canon printer.
- In the paper size list, find the borderless A3 option.
The name may appear as:
A3 Borderless
- Select Rear Tray.
- Select the correct photo paper type.
- Check the preview.
- Start printing.
The image is enlarged slightly during borderless printing
Part of the image extends beyond the edges of the sheet and is not printed. Therefore, small text, borders, and important elements must not be placed directly against the edge.
Check the preview and leave a safe distance around important details.
Why Borderless Mode Is Missing
Possible causes:
- Plain Paper is selected;
- the selected media type does not support borderless printing;
- a queue for another model is selected;
- the document size does not match A3;
- two-sided printing is enabled;
- an application with a limited print dialog is being used;
- AirPrint did not obtain the printer’s complete capability list.
Check the Bonjour Multifunction and Secure AirPrint queue, and then reopen the application.
Two-Sided A3 Printing
Automatic two-sided printing is unavailable for A3. Automatic duplex printing is supported only for certain smaller paper sizes.
To print on both sides of A3:
- turn off Two-Sided;
- print the odd-numbered pages or first sides;
- wait until the ink is completely dry;
- turn the stack over correctly;
- load it back into the rear tray;
- print the even-numbered pages or reverse sides.
Perform an initial test using two sheets. The reloading direction depends on the document orientation and page output order.
If Two-Sided Printing Is Enabled and Cannot Be Turned Off
- Close the print window.
- Check the document page size.
- Open the print window again.
- Select A3.
- Set two-sided printing to Off.
- Delete the saved preset if it forces duplex printing.
If A3 Printing Is Very Slow
Printing a large sheet takes longer than printing A4. Additional delays may be caused by:
- high print quality;
- photo paper;
- borderless printing;
- a very high-resolution image;
- a weak Wi-Fi connection;
- a large PDF;
- complex transparency or graphics;
- insufficient application memory;
- an ink drying pause.
For a standard draft document, select standard quality and plain paper.
If the Mac Takes a Long Time to Prepare the Job
Check the file size. An A3 image at 600 dpi with many layers may occupy hundreds of megabytes.
Try:
- saving the document as a standard PDF;
- closing unnecessary applications;
- reducing the image resolution;
- rasterizing complex effects;
- printing the PDF from Preview;
- using Ethernet or USB for testing.
If A3 Prints with Incorrect Colors
Check:
- whether the media type matches the actual paper;
- whether Plain Paper is selected for photo paper;
- whether color correction is being applied twice;
- whether the application is configured correctly;
- whether any ink tank is empty;
- whether the print head nozzles are clean.
For the initial test, print the image from Preview using automatic color management.
If A3 Paper Feeds at an Angle
Possible causes:
- the paper guides are positioned too far apart;
- the paper guides press too tightly against the sheet;
- the paper is loaded sideways;
- the corners of the sheet are folded;
- the stack is not aligned;
- too much paper is loaded;
- a foreign object is inside the tray.
Solution
- Cancel printing.
- Remove the paper.
- Check the sheets.
- Leave only one sheet for testing.
- Load it in the center.
- Move both guides against it.
- Repeat printing.
If the Printer Picks Up Several A3 Sheets
- Cancel the job.
- Remove the stack.
- Separate sheets that are stuck together.
- Align the edges.
- Reduce the number of sheets.
- Reload the paper.
Do not fan photo paper too aggressively because this may damage the coating.
If the Paper Is Jammed
A support code such as 1300 or another paper jam code will appear on the screen.
- Stop printing.
- Follow the instructions on the touchscreen.
- Slowly remove the jammed sheet.
- Do not pull the paper with excessive force.
- Check whether any torn pieces remain inside.
- Reload a flat sheet.
Do not reuse a severely wrinkled or damaged sheet.
If the Settings Keep Returning to A4
Possible causes:
- the document is set to A4;
- the default paper size in macOS is A4;
- the application uses its own page settings;
- a saved A4 preset is selected;
- the application was not restarted after the Canon printer was added;
- a different printer queue is being used.
Check the Default macOS Paper Size
- Open System Settings.
- Select Printers & Scanners.
- Find the default paper size setting.
For everyday use, you can leave it set to A4. Before printing a large document, select A3 directly in the application.
Delete the Incorrect Preset
If the application uses a saved preset:
- open the print window;
- select the default settings;
- configure A3 and Rear Tray again;
- save a new preset with a clear name.
For example:
Canon A3 — Plain Paper
If A3 Works over USB but Not over Wi-Fi
The paper size does not depend on the connection method, but different printer queues may have different capability lists.
If the USB queue displays A3 but the network queue does not:
- make sure the network entry belongs to Canon TS9500 Series;
- do not remove the working USB queue yet;
- add the network Canon printer again as Bonjour Multifunction;
- select Secure AirPrint;
- restart the application;
- check whether A3 appears.
If A3 Works from Preview but Not from Another Application
This means the printer, AirPrint, and rear tray are configured correctly. The problem is related to the settings of the specific application.
Check:
- the document page size;
- the system print dialog;
- the scale;
- the saved preset;
- the orientation;
- the application’s own paper source setting.
If necessary, save the document as a PDF and print it through Preview.
If A3 Does Not Print from Any Application
- Check copying and standard A4 printing.
- Load one A3 sheet in the rear tray.
- Register A3 and Plain Paper.
- Open a simple PDF in Preview.
- Select Canon TS9500 Series.
- Select A3.
- Select Rear Tray.
- Select Plain Paper.
- Turn off two-sided and borderless printing.
- Start printing.
If the printer displays a support code, resolve it by following the on-screen instructions.
Do Not Disable Paper Mismatch Detection Unless Necessary
Paper size and media type detection protects against accidentally printing an A3 job on A4 paper or a photo document on plain paper.
Disabling this check may cause:
- a cropped image;
- incorrect scaling;
- use of the wrong paper source;
- poor print quality;
- excessive ink consumption;
- contamination inside the printer.
It is better to correct the print job settings and registered paper information.
When the Problem Is Not Related to the Mac
macOS settings will not help if:
- the rear tray physically cannot pick up paper;
- a foreign object is inside the printer;
- the feed rollers are damaged;
- a hardware support code remains displayed;
- paper jams during every print job;
- the printer cannot print its internal test pages;
- the carriage is blocked;
- the device does not turn on.
When a Service Center Is Required
Contact a service center if:
- the rear tray cannot pick up even one flat sheet;
- feeding is accompanied by loud cracking noises;
- the paper continuously enters at an angle;
- the sheet tears inside the mechanism;
- torn paper remains inside after a jam is cleared;
- a support code repeatedly appears on the display;
- the printer cannot print A3 from any device;
- there is a smell of overheating.
