Canon TS9500 Series multifunction printers can automatically feed several pages through the top document feeder and save them on a Mac as one multipage PDF. You can use either the built-in macOS scanning tools or Canon IJ Scan Utility Lite.
If the wrong format is selected, each page may be saved as a separate file. If the flatbed scanner is selected instead of the ADF, the Mac will scan only the document placed on the scanner glass. Therefore, it is important to configure the original source and save format correctly.
This guide applies to the following models:
- Canon PIXMA TS9540;
- Canon PIXMA TS9540A;
- Canon PIXMA TS9541C;
- Canon PIXMA TS9541CA;
- Canon PIXMA TS9550;
- Canon PIXMA TS9550A;
- Canon PIXMA TS9551C;
- Canon PIXMA TS9551CA.
In macOS and Canon applications, the device may appear under the common name:
Canon TS9500 series
The main steps apply to:
- macOS Tahoe 26;
- macOS Sequoia 15;
- macOS Sonoma 14;
- macOS Ventura 13;
- Mac computers with Apple silicon;
- Mac computers with Intel processors.
Select a multipage PDF to create one file
In IJ Scan Utility Lite, select PDF (Multiple Pages). In the macOS system scanning window, select PDF and enable the option to combine scanned pages into one document.
In some modes, the standard PDF or JPEG option may save each page separately.
ADF Capacity and Limitations
You can load the following into the Canon TS9500 Series automatic document feeder:
- up to 20 sheets of A4 or Letter paper weighing approximately 75 g/m²;
- up to 5 sheets of Legal paper weighing approximately 75 g/m²;
- an A4 or Letter stack no more than approximately 2 mm high;
- a Legal stack no more than approximately 0.5 mm high.
The actual number of sheets may be lower when thicker or worn paper is used.
Important Size Limitation
Canon TS9540 and TS9550 can print on A3 paper, but the built-in scanner is not an A3 scanner.
The ADF supports documents up to:
- A4;
- Letter;
- Legal.
An A3 original cannot be fed through the ADF in one piece. It must be scanned in sections and the images combined afterward, or scanned with a separate A3 scanner.
How to Load Pages into the ADF
- Remove all originals from the scanner glass.
- Close the scanner cover.
- Open the document feeder tray at the top of the multifunction printer.
- Move the side guides apart.
- Take the prepared stack.
- Load the documents with the side to be scanned facing up.
- Insert the stack as far as it will go.
- Move the guides against the left and right edges of the paper.
The guides should touch the paper but must not squeeze the stack tightly. If the guides are positioned too narrowly, the pages may feed at an angle or jam.
Load originals with the image facing up
If documents are loaded with the blank side facing up, blank pages will appear in the completed PDF.
On the scanner glass, place the original with the image facing down. In the top automatic document feeder, load it with the image facing up.
Which Scanning Method Should You Choose?
| Method | When to use it | Main setting |
|---|---|---|
| Open Scanner | For creating a quick PDF without installing Canon software | PDF and combining pages into one document |
| Image Capture | For built-in system scanning | Use Document Feeder and PDF |
| IJ Scan Utility Lite | For regular use and additional settings | PDF (Multiple Pages) |
| Preview | For combining, rearranging, and deleting pages | PDF thumbnail sidebar |

- Click Open Scanner.
If the button is missing, the Canon device may have been added only as a print queue. In that case, add it again as:
Bonjour Multifunction → Secure AirPrint
Show All Settings
If a small window opens:
- click Show Details;
- increase the height of the window if some settings are not visible;
- scroll down through the options if necessary.
Select the ADF
- Turn on Use Document Feeder.
- In the scan mode field, select the document feeder if such a list is displayed.
- Make sure the documents are loaded in the top tray.
Select the Image Type
In the Kind field, select:
- Text — for high-contrast black-and-white documents;
- Black & White — for grayscale documents;
- Color — for pages containing color elements.
All sheets in the automatic document feeder are scanned using the same settings. If some pages are in color and others require black-and-white mode, separate the document into several groups.
Select the Resolution
For a standard document, select:
300 dpi
Other options:
- 150–200 dpi — for a small file intended only for viewing;

A high resolution increases the scanning time and PDF file size.
Select the Document Size
In the size field, select the actual format:
- A4;
- Letter;
- Legal.
If the wrong size is selected, the image may be cropped or large white margins may appear around the page.
Select PDF
- In the Format field, select PDF.
- Enable the option to combine pages into one file.
Depending on the macOS version, it may be called:
- Combine into single document;
- Combine into single file;
- Combine into single document.
If the option is not displayed:
- make sure PDF is selected;
- click Show Details;
- increase the window size;
- scroll down through the options.
Select the Folder and File Name
- In the Scan To field, select a folder.
- For the initial test, use Documents or Desktop.

Do not configure the Photo button. It is intended primarily for photos and may not offer the required multipage PDF mode.
Select the Source
In the Select Source field, choose one of the following:
- Document (ADF/Platen) — automatically selects between the scanner glass and ADF;
- Document (ADF Simplex) — single-sided documents through the ADF;
- Document (ADF) — the name used in some versions;
- Document (ADF Manual Duplex) — double-sided documents with manual stack reversal.
For a standard single-sided document, select:
Document (ADF Simplex)
If this option is unavailable, select Document (ADF/Platen) or Document (ADF).
Select the Color Mode
In the Color Mode field, select:
- Color — for color documents;
- Grayscale — for grayscale documents;
- Black and White — for high-contrast black-and-white text.
For a general-purpose document containing colored stamps or signatures, select Color.
Select the Size and Resolution
- In the Paper Size field, select A4, Letter, or Legal.
- In the Resolution field, select 300 dpi.
Canon notes that when scanning through the ADF, the automatically detected size may sometimes differ from the selected size. Always check the page edges after scanning.
Select PDF (Multiple Pages)
In the save section, find the following field:
Data Format
Select:
PDF (Multiple Pages)
This option combines all scanned pages into one document.
Difference Between PDF and PDF (Multiple Pages)
| Format | Result |
|---|---|
| May be used for one page or a separate file | |
| PDF (Multiple Pages) | All pages from the current job are saved in one PDF |
Configure Compression
In the PDF Compression field, you can select:
- Standard — standard quality and file size;
- High — stronger compression and a smaller file.
Standard is recommended for most documents.
Select High if:
- the PDF must be sent by email;
- the document contains many color pages;
- the file is too large;
- a slow network connection is being used.
Create a Searchable PDF
If necessary, enable:
Create a PDF file that supports keyword search
For accurate recognition:
- set the resolution to at least 300 dpi;
- select the correct document language in the general settings;
- load the pages without skew;
- use clear originals.
Do not select the Start OCR action
If Start OCR is selected under the actions performed after scanning, PDF (Multiple Pages) may become unavailable.
To create one searchable PDF, select PDF (Multiple Pages) and separately enable the option to create a searchable PDF.
Select the Destination Folder
- In the Save in field, select a folder.
- For the initial test, select Pictures or Documents.
- Enable the creation of a subfolder with the current date if necessary.
Check the Result Before Saving
If the following option is available in your version:

How to Scan More Than 20 Pages
Do not load more sheets into the ADF than the supported limit. This may cause double feeding or a paper jam.
Scan a large document in sections.
Option 1: Create Separate PDFs and Combine Them
- Divide the document into stacks of 15–20 pages.
- Scan each stack into a separate PDF.
- Name the files in order:
Document_part_1.pdf Document_part_2.pdf Document_part_3.pdf
- Open the first part in Preview.
- Select View → Thumbnails.
- Drag the remaining PDF files into the sidebar.
- Check the page order.
- Save the combined file.
Option 2: Add Pages to an Open PDF
- Open the first PDF in Preview.
- Show the thumbnail sidebar.
- Select the last page.
- Use the command to add a page from a scanner if it is available.
- Load the next stack into the ADF.
- Repeat the scanning process.
- Save the document.
How to Scan Double-Sided Documents
With the TS9500 Series, a double-sided original may require the stack to be reloaded. The ADF first scans one side of every sheet, after which the application displays instructions for scanning the reverse sides.
Configure Manual Duplex Scanning
- Open IJ Scan Utility Lite.
- Click Settings.
- Select Document Scan.
- In the Select Source field, select:
Document (ADF Manual Duplex)
- Open Document Scan Orientation Settings.
- Select the document orientation.
- Select the binding side.
- Select PDF (Multiple Pages).
- Click OK.
- Click Document.
After Scanning the First Sides
- Do not change the order of the ejected sheets.
- Wait for the IJ Scan Utility Lite message.
- Check the diagram showing how to turn the stack over.
- Reload the sheets exactly as shown by the application.
- Click OK or the option to continue scanning.
The way the stack must be turned depends on the selected binding side:
- long edge — a standard book or vertically oriented contract;
- short edge — a notepad or calendar that flips upward.
Do not turn the stack over or change its order from memory. Follow the diagram in the Canon window because an incorrect reversal will produce upside-down pages or an incorrect page order.
If Every Page Is Saved as a Separate File
The main cause is an incorrect format selection.
In IJ Scan Utility Lite
- Click Settings.
- Select Document Scan.
- Find Data Format.
- Select PDF (Multiple Pages).
- Click OK.
- Repeat the scan.
In the macOS System Scanner
- Select PDF.
- Enable Combine into single document.
- Repeat the scan.
Combine Files That Have Already Been Created
- Select the created PDF files in Finder.
- Open them in Preview.
- Select View → Thumbnails.
- Drag the pages into one document.
- Arrange them in the correct order.
- Save the new PDF.
If Only the First Page Is Scanned
Check:
- whether document feeder use is enabled;
- whether ADF rather than Platen is selected;
- whether the stack is inserted far enough;
- whether the guides touch the paper;
- whether the sheets are stuck together;
- whether a single-page flatbed scanning mode is selected;
- whether the job stopped because of an error.
Reload the documents:
- remove the documents;
- align them;
- fan the stack gently with your fingers;
- load it with the side to be scanned facing up;
- move the guides against the paper;
- select Document (ADF Simplex);
- repeat the scan.
If the Pages Are in Reverse Order
Do not change the order of the pages in the output tray while scanning is in progress.
If the PDF has already been created:
- open it in Preview;
- select View → Thumbnails;
- drag the pages into the correct order;
- save the document.
Before the next scan, check the original stack order and loading direction.
If Some Pages Are Upside Down
Possible causes:
- some sheets were rotated in the original stack;
- the orientation was selected incorrectly;
- the wrong binding side was selected for manual duplex scanning;
- the stack was turned over incorrectly before scanning the reverse sides.
You can rotate completed pages in Preview:
- open the PDF;
- show the thumbnail sidebar;
- select the incorrect page;
- click the rotate button;
- save the changes.
If Blank Pages Appear
Check:
- whether the stack was loaded with the image facing up;
- whether blank reverse sides are being scanned because duplex mode is enabled;
- whether the stack was turned over correctly;
- whether the original is too light;
- whether Text mode is too high in contrast.
If the documents are single-sided, disable manual duplex scanning.
If the Page Edges Are Cropped
- Check the document size in the settings.
- For a standard document, select A4.
- Align the guides.
- Load the stack without skew.
- Do not mix different sizes.
- Repeat the scan.
For non-standard paper, it is better to scan from the scanner glass and define the area manually.
If the Sheets Feed at an Angle
Possible causes:
- the guides are positioned too far apart;
- the guides squeeze the paper too tightly;
- the sheets are wrinkled;
- the stack edges are not aligned;
- too many pages are loaded;
- paper of different weights is mixed in the stack;
- the feed rollers are dirty.
For testing, load only two or three clean sheets of the same paper.
If the ADF Picks Up Several Sheets at Once
- Cancel scanning.
- Remove the stack.
- Separate any sheets that are stuck together.
- Align the edges.
- Reduce the number of sheets.
- Do not mix new smooth paper with heavily worn paper.
- Repeat the scan.
Do not continue if the paper feeds two or three sheets at a time. Pages will be missing from the completed PDF.
If a Document Is Jammed in the ADF
The following support codes may appear on the Canon display:
- 2801;
- 2802;
- 2803.
In this case:
- cancel scanning;
- follow the message on the touchscreen;
- carefully remove the jammed document;
- do not pull the sheet with excessive force;
- make sure no torn pieces remain inside;
- prepare the documents again.
Do not reload a severely wrinkled or torn sheet. Scan it from the scanner glass.
If the PDF Is Too Large
To reduce the file size:
- select 300 dpi instead of 600 or 1200 dpi;
- select Grayscale for documents without important color elements;
- select High under PDF Compression;
- disable text recognition if it is not required;
- divide a very large document into several PDF files;
- do not scan blank reverse sides.
If the PDF Is Blurry
Check:
- whether a resolution of 75 or 100 dpi is selected;
- whether compression is too strong;
- whether the narrow ADF scanner glass is clean;
- whether the paper feeds straight;
- whether the correct color mode is selected.
For text, select 300 dpi and Standard PDF Compression.
If a Vertical Line Appears on Every Page
If the line appears only when scanning through the ADF but is absent when scanning from the scanner glass, the narrow glass strip through which the document passes is probably dirty.
- Turn off the Canon printer.
- Open the scanner cover.
- Find the narrow glass strip next to the main scanner glass.
- Carefully wipe it with a soft, lint-free cloth.
- Remove dust, correction fluid, and ink marks.
- Wipe the white inner surface opposite the narrow glass strip.
- Close the cover.
- Repeat the scan.
Do not apply liquid directly to the glass and do not use abrasive materials.
If IJ Scan Utility Lite Cannot Detect the ADF
Check:
- whether the correct Canon device is selected in the Scanner field;
- whether the multifunction printer was added as Bonjour Multifunction;
- whether the Open Scanner button works;
- whether Local Network access is allowed for the Canon application;
- whether guest Wi-Fi is being used;
- whether a VPN is enabled;
- whether Bonjour is enabled.
Local Network Permission
In macOS 15 and later:
- open System Settings;
- select Privacy & Security;
- open Local Network;
- enable Canon IJ Scan Utility Lite;
- enable CIJSULAgent if it is displayed;
- quit the application completely by pressing Command + Q;
- start it again.
If Error 157 Appears
Error 157 means that IJ Scan Utility Lite cannot communicate with the scanner.
Check:
- whether the Canon printer is turned on;
- whether an error is displayed;
- whether the printer is connected to the network;
- whether the Mac is on the same network;
- whether the VPN is disabled;
- whether Local Network access is allowed;
- whether the correct scanner is selected;
- whether Bonjour is enabled;
- whether another application is using the scanner.
After checking these items, restart the Canon printer and Mac.
If Scanning Stops in the Middle of the Document
Possible causes:
- unstable Wi-Fi;
- a very large file;
- a weak signal;
- a VPN or network filter;
- a document jam;
- a full Mac disk;
- an unavailable destination folder;
- the Mac entering sleep mode.
For testing:
- reduce the number of pages;
- select 300 dpi;
- select Standard or High PDF Compression;
- save to a local folder;
- disable the VPN;
- prevent the Mac from entering sleep mode during scanning;
- use Ethernet or USB if possible.
If the PDF Cannot Be Saved
Check:
- the available disk space;
- the Save in folder;
- permission to write to the folder;
- whether the external drive is available;
- whether the network folder is connected;
- whether the file name is valid.
For testing, save the document to the local Documents folder.
If PDF (Multiple Pages) Is Missing
Check:
- whether Document Scan is selected;
- whether the Photo button is being used;
- whether Start OCR is selected as the action;
- whether an incompatible large-image save option is enabled;
- whether the current version of IJ Scan Utility Lite is installed.
The correct path is:
Settings → Document Scan → Data Format → PDF (Multiple Pages)
If You Need to Delete or Rearrange Pages
- Open the completed PDF in Preview.
- Select View → Thumbnails.
- To delete a page, select it and press Delete.
- To move a page, drag its thumbnail to a new position.
- To rotate a page, select it and click the rotate button.
- Save the document.
Before deleting pages, it is recommended that you create a backup copy of an important PDF.
How to Check the Completed File
After scanning, make sure:
- the PDF opens;
- the number of pages is correct;
- the page order is correct;
- there are no blank pages;
- the pages are not upside down;
- the edges are not cropped;
- small text is readable;
- there are no vertical lines;
- text can be searched if a searchable PDF was created.
Do not destroy the originals until you have checked the completed file and created a backup copy.
