Last Updated on 18.07.2026 by DriverNew

Canon IJ Scan Utility Lite may stop detecting a Canon TS9500 Series scanner after a macOS update, a router restart, the Mac wakes from sleep, or the network connection changes.

When you click Auto, Document, Photo, or Custom, a message appears stating that communication with the scanner cannot be established. Sometimes the application starts, but the scanner list remains empty or an old device is selected.

This guide applies to the following models:

  • Canon PIXMA TS9540;
  • Canon PIXMA TS9540A;
  • Canon PIXMA TS9541C;
  • Canon PIXMA TS9541CA;
  • Canon PIXMA TS9550;
  • Canon PIXMA TS9550A;
  • Canon PIXMA TS9551C;
  • Canon PIXMA TS9551CA.

In Canon applications and macOS, the device may appear under the common name:

Canon TS9500 series

The main steps apply to:

  • macOS Tahoe 26;
  • macOS Sequoia 15;
  • macOS Sonoma 14;
  • macOS Ventura 13;
  • Mac computers with Apple silicon;
  • Mac computers with Intel processors.

Check macOS system scanning first

If the Canon scanner works through Image Capture or the Open Scanner button, the device, network, and AirPrint system component are working.

In this case, do not remove the working printer queue. You need to correct IJ Scan Utility Lite, the selected scanner, or the application permissions.

Exact Error 157 Message

The following message may appear in IJ Scan Utility Lite:

Cannot communicate with scanner for these reasons:
- Scanner is turned off.
- (If using Wired LAN connection) It is disconnected from Wired LAN.
- (If using wireless LAN connection) Signal strength is poor due to obstructions.
- Network connection is prohibited by security software.
- Different scanner on the network is selected.

Check the above and try scanning again.
If you still cannot communicate, restart the computer.

Error 157

The main causes of Error 157 are:

  • the printer is turned off;
  • an error is displayed on the Canon screen;
  • the printer lost its Wi-Fi connection;
  • the Ethernet cable is disconnected;
  • the Wi-Fi signal is too weak;
