Mac Can Print but Cannot Detect the Canon TS9540, TS9550, or TS9550A Scanner

Last Updated on 18.07.2026 by DriverNew

A Canon TS9500 Series printer may print normally from a Mac, while the scanning component of the multifunction printer does not appear in macOS. The Open Scanner button is missing from Printers & Scanners, the Image Capture app does not display Canon, and IJ Scan Utility Lite reports that it cannot communicate with the scanner.

In most cases, printing and scanning do not work together because the device was added incorrectly. For example, the printer may have been added manually by IP address as a standard print queue instead of as a Bonjour multifunction device.

This guide applies to the following models:

  • Canon PIXMA TS9540;
  • Canon PIXMA TS9540A;
  • Canon PIXMA TS9541C;
  • Canon PIXMA TS9541CA;
  • Canon PIXMA TS9550;
  • Canon PIXMA TS9550A;
  • Canon PIXMA TS9551C;
  • Canon PIXMA TS9551CA.

In macOS, these devices may appear under the common name:

Canon TS9500 series

The main steps apply to:

  • macOS Tahoe 26;
  • macOS Sequoia 15;
  • macOS Sonoma 14;
  • macOS Ventura 13;
  • Mac computers with Apple silicon;
  • Mac computers with Intel processors.

Do not reset the entire printing system as the first step

If printing works, first check system scanning, the Image Capture app, Local Network permission, and how the Canon device was added.

A full printing system reset removes all printers and queues from the Mac. In most cases, adding a new Bonjour Multifunction entry is enough to restore the scanner.

Possible IJ Scan Utility Lite Messages

The following message may appear when a communication error occurs:

Cannot communicate with scanner for these reasons:
- Scanner is turned off.
- It is disconnected from Wired LAN.
- Signal strength is poor due to obstructions.
- Network connection is prohibited by security software.
- Different scanner on the network is selected.

The error code may be:

Error 157

If the application installation is damaged or incomplete, the following message may appear:

A required file is missing or corrupted, or settings are incorrect.
Try the installation again.

Code:

Error 201

An internal error may also occur:

An internal error has occurred.

Code:

Error 202

The message text may vary depending on the IJ Scan Utility Lite version and the macOS interface language.

First, Determine Which Part of Scanning Is Not Working

Two main scanning methods are available on a Mac:

  • macOS system scanning through AirPrint;
  • Canon scanning through IJ Scan Utility Lite.

They use the same device, but a problem with one application does not always mean that the scanner is completely unavailable.

Situation 1: “Open Scanner” Works, but IJ Scan Utility Lite Does Not

In this case:

  • the scanner is recognized by macOS;
  • the network connection is generally working;
  • the problem is related to IJ Scan Utility Lite, the selected device, or application permissions.

Situation 2: Image Capture Detects Canon, but the Button Is Missing from Settings

Try scanning through Image Capture, and then remove and add the multifunction printer again as Bonjour Multifunction.

Situation 3: Printing Works, but the Scanner Is Missing Everywhere

The most likely causes are:

  • the printer was added by IP address for printing only;
  • the selected entry is not a Bonjour Multifunction device;
  • Bonjour is disabled on the printer;
  • the Mac is using an old queue;
  • a network filter is blocking scanner discovery;
  • the printer and Mac are on different network segments.

Step 1: Check the Scanner Without a Computer

Make a standard copy to check the scanning unit.

  1. Turn on the Canon printer.
  2. Wait for the Home screen to appear.
  3. Place a document face down on the scanner glass.
  4. Load A4 paper.
  5. Select Copy.
  6. Tap Black.

If the copy is produced normally:

  • the scanning unit is working;
  • the scanner glass and cover are being detected;
  • the problem should be investigated in macOS, the network, or the Canon application.

If copying is unavailable or a support code appears on the screen, resolve the hardware error first.

Step 2: Check the macOS System Scanner

  1. Open the Apple menu.
  2. Select System Settings.
  3. Open Printers & Scanners.
  4. Select Canon TS9500 Series.

Check whether the following button is available:

Open Scanner

If the Button Is Available

  1. Click Open Scanner.
  2. Place a document on the scanner glass.
  3. Click Show Details if necessary.
  4. Select the scanning source.
  5. Set the resolution to 300 dpi.
  6. Select the destination folder.
  7. Click Scan.

If system scanning works, do not remove the working queue. Proceed to the section about restoring IJ Scan Utility Lite.

If the Button Is Missing

The current queue was probably created for printing only. Add a new Canon entry as a Bonjour multifunction device.

Step 3: Check Canon in the Image Capture App

Image Capture is a built-in macOS application. IJ Scan Utility Lite is not required to use it.

  1. Press Command + Space.
  2. Enter:
    Image Capture
  3. Open the application.
  4. Check the left side of the window.

Canon may appear in one of the following sections:

  • Devices — when connected via USB;
  • Shared — when connected over a network.

If Canon Is Displayed

  1. Select Canon TS9500 Series.
  2. Click Show Details if available.
  3. Select the flatbed scanner or document feeder.
  4. Select the file format.
  5. Specify the destination folder.
  6. Click Scan.

If Image Capture can scan, the macOS system component is working. The error is related to IJ Scan Utility Lite or the settings of a specific application.

If Canon Is Missing

Continue checking:

  • the network connection;
  • Bonjour;
  • how the device was added;
  • the USB connection;
  • Local Network permissions.

Step 4: Check Scanning Through the Preview App

  1. Open the Preview application.
  2. Open the File menu.
  3. Find the command for importing from a scanner.
  4. Select Canon TS9500 Series.

Depending on the macOS version, the command may be called:

Import from Scanner

or it may contain the Canon device name directly.

If Canon is missing from both Preview and Image Capture, add the multifunction printer again through Bonjour Multifunction.

Method 1: Add a New Bonjour Multifunction Entry

This is the main solution when printing works through a queue added by IP address, but the scanner is unavailable.

Do not remove the working queue in advance

First, add a second entry and test scanning. Remove the old queue only after the new one has been tested successfully.

Add the Device

  1. Open Apple → System Settings.
  2. Select Printers & Scanners.
  3. Click Add Printer, Scanner, or Fax.
  4. Open the Default tab.
  5. Wait one or two minutes.

Select the Correct Entry

  1. Find Canon TS9500 Series.
  2. Select the entry whose type is:
    Bonjour Multifunction
  3. In the Use field, select:
    Secure AirPrint
  4. If Secure AirPrint is unavailable, select AirPrint.
  5. Do not select software intended for another model.

Assign a Temporary Name

To distinguish the new entry, enter:

Canon TS9500 AirPrint Scanner
  1. Click Add.
  2. Wait for the process to finish.
  3. Select the new entry.
  4. Check for the Open Scanner button.

If the button appears and scanning works, remove the old queue that was created for printing only.

Why Adding the Printer by IP Address May Not Display the Scanner

When a printer is added manually through the IP tab, macOS creates a queue for sending print jobs. This queue does not always register all multifunction device features.

This is especially likely if one of the following was used:

  • IPP;
  • LPD;
  • HP Jetdirect — Socket;
  • a generic PostScript driver;
  • a driver intended for another model.

For combined printing and scanning, the preferred entry is:

Bonjour Multifunction → Secure AirPrint

Method 2: Check the Mac and Canon Network

Even if printing works, IJ Scan Utility Lite may search for the device using a different network discovery method.

Check the Network on the Mac

  1. Open System Settings.
  2. Select Wi-Fi.
  3. Write down the name of the active network.

Check the Network on the Canon Printer

  1. Tap the network icon on the touchscreen.
  2. Select Wi-Fi.
  3. Open the connection information.
  4. Check the SSID network name.

The Mac and Canon printer must be on the same local network.

Do Not Use a Guest Network

A guest network often blocks communication between connected devices.

Do not use a network whose name contains:

  • Guest;
  • Guest Network;
  • Visitor;
  • Public;
  • Hotspot.

Temporarily Disable the VPN

  1. Quit the VPN application.
  2. Open System Settings → VPN if that section is displayed.
  3. Disconnect the active connection.
  4. Quit IJ Scan Utility Lite completely.
  5. Open the application again.

If the scanner appears, enable local network access in the VPN application.

Method 3: Restart the Printer, Mac, and Router

  1. Quit IJ Scan Utility Lite.
  2. Quit Image Capture.
  3. Turn off the Canon printer using the power button.
  4. Shut down the Mac.
  5. Disconnect the router from the power supply.
  6. Wait approximately one minute.
  7. Turn on the router.
  8. Wait until Wi-Fi is fully restored.
  9. Turn on the Canon printer.
  10. Wait for the network icon to appear.
  11. Turn on the Mac.
  12. Wait one or two minutes.
  13. Check Open Scanner and Image Capture.

After startup, the device may need some time to register its Bonjour services again.

Method 4: Check Local Network Permission

This section is especially important for macOS Sequoia 15, macOS Tahoe 26, and later versions.

Canon states that the following items may appear in the permission list:

  • Canon IJ Scan Utility Lite;
  • CIJSULAgent;
  • Canon Setup;
  • other Canon components.
  1. Open the Apple menu.
  2. Select System Settings.
  3. Open Privacy & Security.
  4. Select Local Network.
  5. Find Canon IJ Scan Utility Lite.
  6. Turn on the switch.
  7. Find CIJSULAgent.
  8. Turn on its switch as well.
  9. Allow access for any other Canon components you use.
  10. Close System Settings.
  11. Quit IJ Scan Utility Lite completely.
  12. Open the application again.

Allow more than just the main application

IJ Scan Utility Lite may use the CIJSULAgent background component. If permission is enabled only for the main application window, the network scanner may still fail to appear.

If the Application Is Not Listed

  1. Start IJ Scan Utility Lite.
  2. Click the button to refresh the scanner list.
  3. Wait for the macOS permission request.
  4. Click Allow.

If the request does not appear:

  1. quit the application;
  2. restart the Mac;
  3. open IJ Scan Utility Lite again;
  4. repeat device discovery.

Method 5: Select the Correct Scanner in IJ Scan Utility Lite

Start the Application

  1. Open Finder.
  2. From the menu bar, select Go.
  3. Open Applications.
  4. Open the Canon Utilities folder.
  5. Open the IJ Scan Utility folder.
  6. Start Canon IJ Scan Utility Lite.

Check the Scanner or Product Name Field

Depending on the application version, the field may be called:

  • Scanner;
  • Product Name.
  1. Open the device list.
  2. Select the Bonjour name of your Canon printer.
  3. Do not select another printer from the same series.
  4. If USB is being used, select the entry marked as a USB device.

The network device may appear as:

Canon TS9500 series

or under a custom Bonjour service name.

Refresh the List

  1. Click the Refresh icon next to the scanner list.
  2. Wait several seconds.
  3. Open the list again.

If the Bonjour service name was changed recently:

  1. quit IJ Scan Utility Lite;
  2. wait for a short time;
  3. open the application again;
  4. click Refresh;
  5. select the new name.

If Another Canon Device Is Selected

Error 157 may appear if the application is trying to communicate with another device on the network.

This may happen when:

  • several Canon printers are installed in the office;
  • the router was replaced;
  • the Bonjour name was changed;
  • an old printer was removed, but its name remains in the application;
  • Wireless Direct was previously used;
  • a USB connection was previously used.

Select the actual device in the Scanner or Product Name field.

Method 6: Check Bonjour on the Printer

IJ Scan Utility Lite cannot use a network-connected Canon device if Bonjour is disabled.

  1. On the Canon Home screen, select Setup.
  2. Open Device settings.
  3. Select LAN settings.
  4. Select the connection being used.
  5. Open the advanced settings.
  6. Select Bonjour settings.
  7. Set the Bonjour enable option to Enable.

Also check the Bonjour service name.

After changing the setting:

  1. turn off the Canon printer;
  2. turn it on again;
  3. wait one or two minutes;
  4. restart IJ Scan Utility Lite;
  5. refresh the scanner list.

Method 7: Check the IP Address Through Safari

  1. Open the network information on the Canon screen.
  2. Write down the IPv4 address.

Example:

192.168.1.125

Use your device’s actual address, not the value from this example.

  1. Open Safari.
  2. Enter the Canon printer’s IP address.
  3. Press Enter.

If Remote UI opens, the Mac has network access to the printer.

If the web page does not open:

  • check the Wi-Fi network;
  • disable the VPN;
  • restart the router;
  • check whether a guest network is being used;
  • check wireless client isolation;
  • check the firewall.

Method 8: Check Security Software

Error 157 may indicate that the network connection is being blocked by security software.

Check:

  • third-party antivirus software;
  • a network filter;
  • a corporate VPN;
  • a DNS filter;
  • an outbound connection control application;
  • office firewall settings.

For troubleshooting, temporarily pause only the third-party network filter and restart IJ Scan Utility Lite.

Do not disable macOS security permanently. After testing, create permission for:

  • Canon IJ Scan Utility Lite;
  • CIJSULAgent;
  • Canon local connections;
  • Bonjour services.

Method 9: Check the macOS Firewall

  1. Open System Settings.
  2. Go to Network.
  3. Open Firewall.
  4. Check the advanced settings.

If all incoming connections are being blocked, temporarily disable only this option for testing.

Restore the secure settings after troubleshooting.

Method 10: Check USB Scanning

A USB connection helps determine whether the problem is related to the network.

Connect the Printer Directly

  1. Turn on the Canon printer.
  2. Connect a USB Type-B cable to the printer.
  3. Connect the other end directly to the Mac.
  4. Do not use a USB hub for the initial test.
  5. Do not use an old docking station.
  6. Wait several minutes.

Check macOS

  1. Open Printers & Scanners.
  2. Select the Canon USB entry.
  3. Check for the Open Scanner button.
  4. Open Image Capture.

Check IJ Scan Utility Lite

  1. Start IJ Scan Utility Lite.
  2. Open the scanner list.
  3. Select the Canon entry marked as a USB device.
  4. Click Document.

If USB scanning works but network scanning does not, the problem is related to:

  • Bonjour;
  • network permissions;
  • the router;
  • the VPN;
  • the selected network scanner.

If the Mac Cannot Detect Canon Even over USB

  1. Try another USB port.
  2. Try another cable.
  3. If USB-C is being used, replace the adapter.
  4. Do not connect the printer through a monitor.

If Canon is missing even from the USB section, check the cable, adapter, Mac port, and the multifunction printer’s USB connector.

Method 11: Reinstall IJ Scan Utility Lite

Reinstallation is required if the following error appears:

Error 201

or if the application does not start, closes unexpectedly, or does not save the selected scanner.

Before Reinstalling

  1. Quit IJ Scan Utility Lite.
  2. Quit all scanning applications.
  3. Restart the Mac.
  4. Check system scanning through Image Capture.

If system scanning works, the problem is limited to the Canon application.

  8. Refresh the list.
  9. Select the new Bonjour name.

If Scanning Works over Wi-Fi but Not over Ethernet

Check:

  • whether the wired LAN is enabled on the Canon printer;
  • whether the cable is connected to the router;
  • whether an IPv4 address was obtained;
  • whether the Mac is on the same local network;
  • whether a new Bonjour entry appeared;
  • whether the correct device is selected in IJ Scan Utility Lite.

After switching from Wi-Fi to Ethernet, the Bonjour name or network address may change. Refresh the scanner list.

If Scanning Works over Ethernet but Not over Wi-Fi

Possible causes include:

  • a weak signal;
  • a guest network;
  • wireless client isolation;
  • the Mac being connected to another access point;
  • a VPN blocking local traffic;
  • Wi-Fi being disabled on the Canon printer.

For stable regular use, you can continue using Ethernet. The Mac can remain connected to the router over Wi-Fi.

If the Mac Is Not Displayed on the Printer’s Operation Panel

This is a separate function that sends scanned data from the Canon operation panel to the computer.

It usually requires:

  • IJ Scan Utility Lite to be installed;
  • the Canon background component to be running;
  • Local Network permission;
  • the correct Canon device to be selected;
  • both devices to be on the same local network;
  • firewall permission.

  3. Select the Canon device in the scanner list.
  4. Do not close the Canon background components.
  5. Open the scanning menu on the multifunction printer’s operation panel again.

You do not have to use the Canon operation panel for standard scanning from the computer.

If Printing and “Open Scanner” Work, Is IJ Scan Utility Lite Required?

The additional application is not required if the macOS features are sufficient.

Without IJ Scan Utility Lite, you can use:

  • Printers & Scanners;
  • Image Capture;
  • Preview;
  • AirPrint scanning.

IJ Scan Utility Lite is useful for:

  • preset Document and Photo modes;
  • saving multipage PDF files;
  • automatic original detection;
  • scanning several photos;
  • OCR;
  • custom settings;
  • configuring actions from the Canon operation panel.

Do Not Grant Unnecessary Permissions

Local Network permission is usually sufficient to detect a network-connected Canon device.

Do not enable the following unless necessary:

  • Full Disk Access;
  • camera access;
  • microphone access;
  • permission to control other applications;
  • Accessibility access.

If the application cannot save a file, check permission for the selected folder separately.

If the Scan Is Not Saved

The scanner may work, but the application may be unable to write the completed file.

Check:

  • available disk space;
  • the destination folder;
  • permission to access the folder;
  • whether the external drive is available;
  • whether the file is write-protected.

For errors 242, 243, or 244, select another folder, such as Pictures, and scan again.

Reset the Entire Printing System

If printing works, a full reset is usually unnecessary.

Consider it only when:

  • a damaged entry cannot be removed;
  • a new Bonjour Multifunction entry cannot be added;
  • unrepairable duplicate entries remain in the list;
  • both printing and scanning have disappeared;
  • removing and adding the printer normally did not help.

A reset removes all printers

After the procedure, you will need to add the Canon printer and all other printers configured on this Mac again.

  1. Open System Settings → Printers & Scanners.
  2. Hold down the Control key and click a device.
  3. Select Reset printing system.
  4. Confirm the action.
  5. Restart the Mac.
  6. Add the Canon printer as Bonjour Multifunction.
  7. Select Secure AirPrint.

When the Problem Is Not Related to macOS

Mac settings will not help if:

  • the Canon printer cannot make copies;
  • the scanning unit does not move;
  • a hardware support code is displayed;
  • the scanner module is damaged;
  • the multifunction printer does not turn on;
  • USB is not detected on several computers;
  • the Canon printer cannot connect to any network;
  • a loud cracking noise can be heard after startup;
  • liquid entered the device.

When a Network Administrator Is Required

Contact the administrator if:

  • the Mac and Canon printer are in different VLANs;
  • Bonjour is blocked on the network;
  • multicast traffic is prohibited;
  • a corporate VPN is being used;
  • the printer is available only through a print server;
  • the firewall blocks scanning;
  • the router settings cannot be changed.

When a Service Center Is Required

Contact a service center if:

  • copying without a computer does not work;
  • the scanning unit does not move;
  • a support code appears on the screen;
  • the USB scanner is not detected on several computers;
  • scanning is interrupted by an unusual noise;
  • the device was damaged after being dropped;
  • liquid entered the device;
  • there is a smell of overheating.
