A Canon TS9500 Series printer may work normally after installation but switch to offline mode after some time. The macOS print window displays an “Offline” status, jobs remain in the queue, and the computer reports that the printer is not responding.
The problem may occur after the router is restarted, the Mac wakes from sleep, the printer’s IP address changes, the Mac switches between Wi-Fi networks, or a VPN is started. Sometimes an old print queue remains on the Mac and no longer corresponds to the multifunction printer’s current network connection.
This guide applies to the following models:
- Canon PIXMA TS9540;
- Canon PIXMA TS9540A;
- Canon PIXMA TS9541C;
- Canon PIXMA TS9541CA;
- Canon PIXMA TS9550;
- Canon PIXMA TS9550A;
- Canon PIXMA TS9551C;
- Canon PIXMA TS9551CA.
In macOS, these devices may appear under the common name:
Canon TS9500 series
The main steps apply to macOS Tahoe 26, macOS Sequoia 15, macOS Sonoma 14, and macOS Ventura 13, as well as Macs with Apple silicon and Intel processors.
Do not reinstall an old driver as the first step
For standard printing, Canon TS9500 Series uses the built-in AirPrint technology. An “Offline” status is more often related to the print queue, network, Bonjour, or a changed device address.
First, check the connection and add a new Secure AirPrint queue. Older Canon installers may create an additional non-working entry.
Messages That May Appear on the Mac
The following messages may be displayed in the print window or Print Center:
Printer is offline.
The printer is not responding.
Unable to connect to printer.
Looking for printer...
First, Determine Where the Problem Is
Perform three quick checks.
Check 1: Make a Copy Without the Mac
- Turn on the printer.
- Load one sheet of A4 plain paper.
- Place a document on the scanner glass.
- On the touchscreen, select Copy.
- Tap Black.
If the copy prints, the printing mechanism is working. Continue troubleshooting the network and macOS.
If copying is unavailable or a support code appears on the display, resolve the hardware error first.
Check 2: Print from an iPhone or iPad
Connect the mobile device to the same home Wi-Fi network and try using AirPrint.
If printing from the iPhone works:
- the printer is connected to the network;
- AirPrint is working on the printer;
- the problem is probably related to the queue or settings on the specific Mac.
If neither the Mac nor the iPhone can detect the printer, check the multifunction printer’s connection to the router.
Check 3: Open the Canon Web Interface
- Tap the network icon on the printer’s touchscreen.
- Open the current connection information.
- Find the IPv4 address.
It may look similar to:
192.168.1.125
Do not use the address from this example. Write down the address displayed on your printer.
- Open Safari on the Mac.
- Enter the IP address in the address bar.
- Press Enter.
If the Canon Remote UI page opens, the Mac can communicate with the printer on the local network. The main problem is related to the print queue, AirPrint, or Bonjour.
If the page does not open, resolve the network problem first.
Method 1: Check the Printer Screen and Network Icon
- Turn on the Canon printer.
- Wait for the HOME screen to appear.
- Check whether a support code is displayed.
- Check the network icon at the bottom of the screen.
If the Wi-Fi icon is missing or indicates that the connection is interrupted:
- tap the network icon;
- select Wi-Fi;
- make sure the wireless network is enabled;
- check the SSID network name;
- reconnect the printer to the router if necessary.
If Ethernet is being used, check:
- whether the cable is inserted securely;
- whether the router port indicator is lit;
- whether the wired LAN is enabled on the printer;
- whether the network cable is damaged.
Method 2: Make Sure the Mac and Printer Are on the Same Network
Check the Network on the Mac
- Open the Apple menu.
- Select System Settings.
- Open Wi-Fi.
- Write down the name of the current network.
Check the Network on the Printer
- Tap the network icon on the Canon screen.
- Select Wi-Fi.
- Open the current settings list.
- Check the Network name (SSID) line.
The printer must be connected to the main router used by the Mac.
Different Wi-Fi Band Names
The router may create two networks:
Home Home_5G
Canon TS9500 Series connects to the 2.4 GHz band. The Mac may use the 5 GHz band of the same router if both bands are part of the same local network and the router does not isolate them from each other.
For testing, temporarily connect the Mac to the same 2.4 GHz network as the printer.
Do Not Use a Guest Network
A guest network often provides Internet access but prevents connected devices from communicating with each other.
Do not connect the Canon printer or Mac to a network whose name contains:
- Guest;
- Guest Network;
- Visitor;
- Public;
- Hotspot.
Connect both devices to the main home or office network.
Method 3: Clear the Queue in Print Center
One damaged print job may pause the entire queue.
Open Print Center
- Press Command + Space.
- Enter:
Print Center
- Open the application.
- Select Canon TS9500 Series.
Resume the Queue
If the queue is paused:
- click Resume;
- wait several seconds;
- check the printer’s screen.
Delete Stuck Documents
- Select the first job showing an error.
- Click the delete button.
- Delete all old jobs.
- Close the queue window.
- Wait approximately 20 seconds.
Print a Simple Document
- Open TextEdit.
- Create a new document.
- Enter several lines of text.
- Select File → Print.
- Select Canon TS9500 Series.
- Click Print.
If TextEdit prints but another application shows the printer as offline, quit and reopen the affected application. It may have saved the old printer queue.
Method 4: Restart the Devices in the Correct Order
Simply turning the printer off and immediately turning it back on may not restore its network registration.
- Delete all jobs from the print queue.
- Turn off the printer using the power button.
- Wait until the power lamp turns off.
- Shut down the Mac.
- Disconnect the router from the power supply.
- Wait approximately one minute.
- Reconnect the router to the power supply.
- Wait until Wi-Fi and Internet access are fully restored.
- Turn on the printer.
- Wait for the active network icon to appear.
- Wait another minute.
- Turn on the Mac.
- Try printing from TextEdit again.
After startup, the Canon printer may need several minutes to register the Bonjour service again.
Method 5: Disable the VPN
A VPN may block discovery of local devices or route all traffic through a remote server.
- Quit the VPN application you are using.
- Open System Settings.
- Go to VPN if this section is displayed.
- Disconnect the active connection.
- Wait several seconds.
- Open Printers & Scanners.
- Check the Canon printer’s status.
If the printer appears after the VPN is disabled, look for a setting in the VPN application that allows local network access. It may be called:
- Allow LAN traffic;
- Local network access;
- Bypass VPN for local devices;
- Allow local network.
Method 6: Check Local Network Permission
In macOS 15 and later, individual applications require permission to discover network devices.
This is especially relevant to:
- Canon Setup;
- IJ Scan Utility Lite;
- Canon network utilities;
- third-party printing and scanning applications.
- Open Apple → System Settings.
- Go to Privacy & Security.
- Open Local Network.
- Find the Canon application you use.
- Turn on the switch next to it.
- Quit the Canon application.
- Open it again.
If the problem occurs only in IJ Scan Utility Lite while documents print through AirPrint, do not remove the working queue. First, correct the permission for the specific application.
Method 7: Add a New Secure AirPrint Queue
Apple recommends creating and testing a new queue before removing the old one.
Open the Add Printer Window
- Open Apple → System Settings.
- Select Printers & Scanners.
- Click Add Printer, Scanner, or Fax.
- Wait one or two minutes.
Select the Correct Entry
- Open the Default tab.
- Find Canon TS9500 Series.
- Select the entry whose type is:
Bonjour Multifunction
- In the Use field, select:
Secure AirPrint
- If Secure AirPrint is unavailable, select AirPrint.
Do not select software intended for another Canon model.
Distinguish the New Queue
Temporarily enter the following name:
Canon TS9500 AirPrint New
- Click Add.
- Wait for the process to finish.
- Print a document through the new entry.
If the new queue works, remove the old queue showing the “Offline” status.
Remove the Old Non-Working Queue
- Open Printers & Scanners.
- Select the old Canon entry.
- Click Remove Printer.
- Confirm the removal.
Then set the new entry as the default printer.
Set the Correct Default Printer
- Open System Settings → Printers & Scanners.
- Find the Default printer setting.
- Select the new Canon TS9500 Series queue.
Quit and reopen any applications that continue to display the removed queue.
Method 8: Check Bonjour on the Printer
AirPrint uses Bonjour to discover the device on the local network. If Bonjour is disabled, the Mac may not detect the Canon printer automatically.
- On the printer, open Setup.
- Select Device settings.
- Open LAN settings.
- Select the connection being used: Wi-Fi or wired LAN.
- Open the advanced settings.
- Select Bonjour settings.
- Set it to Enable.
Also check the Bonjour service name. It must be different from the names of other printers on the network.
After changing the setting, turn the Canon printer off and on again, and then add the device to the Mac again.
Method 9: Check the IP Address
If the router assigned a new address, a queue added manually using the old IP address will become unavailable.
View the Current Address
- Tap the network icon on the touchscreen.
- Select the connection being used.
- Open the settings list.
- Find the IPv4 address.
Compare it with the address used when the printer was added manually.
Print the Network Settings
To obtain complete information:
- load three sheets of A4 plain paper;
- select Setup on the printer’s screen;
- open Device settings;
- select LAN settings;
- select the option to print network information;
- confirm the action.
Check the following information on the printed sheet:
- SSID;
- IPv4 Address;
- MAC Address;
- Bonjour Enable/Disable;
- Bonjour Service Name;
- Wi-Fi signal strength.
The network settings sheet contains important information
It may contain the network name, MAC address, and other settings. Do not publish a photo of the sheet without hiding personal information.
Method 10: Reserve the IP Address on the Router
This method is useful if the Canon printer regularly becomes offline after the router is restarted.
In the router settings, the feature may be called:
- DHCP Reservation;
- Address Reservation;
- Static Lease;
- IP Address Reservation;
- IP-to-MAC Binding.
You will need the printer’s MAC address shown on the network settings sheet.
After the reservation is configured, the router will assign the same address to the Canon printer every time.
Do not assign a random static address directly on the printer. An incorrectly selected address may conflict with another device.
Method 11: Add the Printer by IP Address for Testing
Use this option if the Canon web interface opens but the device does not appear in the Bonjour list.
- Open System Settings → Printers & Scanners.
- Click Add Printer, Scanner, or Fax.
- Go to the IP tab.
- Enter the Canon printer’s current IPv4 address.
- Select AirPrint or IPP as the protocol if either option is available.
- Leave the queue field blank.
- In the Use field, select AirPrint.
- Click Add.
- Test printing.
Adding the printer by IP address may restore printing, but scanning and other multifunction features may be limited. After Bonjour is restored, it is better to use the Bonjour Multifunction entry.
If Canon Becomes Offline After the Mac Wakes from Sleep
- Wake the printer’s screen.
- Check the network icon.
- Wait approximately one minute.
- Open Print Center.
- Click Resume.
If this does not help:
- turn Wi-Fi off and on again on the Mac;
- check whether the Mac connected to another network;
- disable the VPN;
- open the Canon printer’s IP address in Safari;
- create a new Secure AirPrint queue;
- reserve the IP address on the router.
If the Printer Disappears After a Long Period of Inactivity
Check the router’s power-saving settings and the wireless signal quality.
It is recommended to:
- place the printer closer to the router;
- avoid placing it behind a metal cabinet;
- avoid placing it near a microwave oven;
- avoid placing it directly next to many wireless devices;
- reserve its IP address;
- update the router firmware;
- use Ethernet if possible.
Check the Wi-Fi Signal Strength
If the problem occurs intermittently, check the signal strength on the printed network settings sheet.
A weak connection may cause the following symptoms:
- a prolonged “Looking for printer” status;
- slow print job transmission;
- the printer going offline during printing;
- scanning being interrupted;
- the printer disappearing after sleep.
For testing, temporarily place the Canon printer near the router. If the problem disappears, improve the Wi-Fi coverage or use Ethernet.
Method 12: Switch to Ethernet
A wired connection is useful if Wi-Fi is unstable or the printer is located far from the router.
- Connect an Ethernet cable to the printer.
- Connect the other end to the router.
- Open the network settings on the Canon screen.
- Enable the wired LAN.
- Wait for the printer to receive an IP address.
- On the Mac, open Printers & Scanners.
- Add a new Bonjour Multifunction entry.
- Select Secure AirPrint.
- Test printing.
The Mac can continue using Wi-Fi. The important requirement is that the Ethernet-connected printer and Mac are on the same local network.
Method 13: Check the USB Connection
A USB test helps confirm that the printing component and macOS work independently of the network.
- Turn on the printer.
- Connect it directly to the Mac using a USB cable.
- Do not use a hub or docking station for the initial test.
- Wait several minutes.
- Open Printers & Scanners.
- Check whether a Canon USB queue appears.
- Print a document from TextEdit.
If USB works but Wi-Fi remains offline, the problem is related to the network, Bonjour, or the network queue.
If Several Identical Canon Entries Are Listed
The entries may refer to different connections:
- the old Wi-Fi connection;
- the new Wi-Fi connection;
- Ethernet;
- USB;
- manual addition by IP address;
- Wireless Direct;
- an old Bonjour name.
To identify the correct queue:
- rename the entries with clear names;
- test each one by printing a simple document;
- check whether the Open Scanner button is available;
- keep the working Bonjour Multifunction entry;
- remove old and non-working queues.
If Printing Works but the Scanner Is Offline
Printing and scanning use different system components. Do not reset the entire printing system only because IJ Scan Utility Lite is not working.
Check:
- whether the Canon printer was added as Bonjour Multifunction;
- whether the Open Scanner button is available;
- whether Canon is visible in the Image Capture application;
- whether IJ Scan Utility Lite is allowed to access the local network;
- whether the devices are connected to the same network;
- whether a VPN is blocking the connection.
Problems with scanning through IJ Scan Utility Lite are covered separately.
Check a Third-Party Firewall or Antivirus
Some security applications install network filters and block Bonjour.
Check the following settings:
- whether local network traffic is allowed;
- whether Canon applications are blocked;
- whether network device discovery is allowed;
- whether a mode that blocks all unknown connections is enabled.
Do not disable security permanently. For troubleshooting, temporarily pause only the third-party network filter and test printing.
If the Canon printer appears, create a permanent local network permission in the security application.
Check the macOS Firewall
- Open Apple → System Settings.
- Go to Network.
- Open Firewall.
- Check the advanced settings.
If the option to block all incoming connections is enabled, temporarily disable only this option for testing.
Restore the secure settings after troubleshooting.
Method 14: Update macOS
- Open Apple → System Settings.
- Go to General.
- Select Software Update.
- Wait for the check to finish.
- Install the available updates.
- Restart the Mac.
AirPrint is part of macOS, so system updates may improve printing and network discovery.
Method 15: Check for a Printer Firmware Update
A firmware update may resolve known network and printing issues.
It is safer to check directly from the Canon touchscreen:
- make sure the printer is connected to the Internet;
- on the HOME screen, select Setup;
- open Device settings;
- select Firmware update;
- start the update check;
- follow the on-screen instructions.
Do not turn off the printer or router during the update.
Method 16: Reset the Printing System
Use this method only after checking the queue, network, Bonjour, and a new AirPrint queue.
The reset affects every printer on the Mac
After the reset, you will need to add the Canon printer and all other printers again. The queues and related printing system settings will also be cleared.
- Open Apple → System Settings.
- Select Printers & Scanners.
- Hold down the Control key and click a printer in the list.
- Select Reset printing system.
- Confirm the action.
If the list is empty, hold down Control and click an empty area of the list.
After the Reset
- Restart the Mac.
- Restart the Canon printer.
- Wait for the network connection to be restored.
- Open Printers & Scanners.
- Click Add Printer, Scanner, or Fax.
- Select Bonjour Multifunction.
- In the Use field, select Secure AirPrint.
- Add the printer.
- Print a test document.
When a Full Reset Will Not Help
Resetting the printing system will not resolve:
- Wi-Fi being disabled on the printer;
- an incorrect network password;
- a guest network;
- a weak signal;
- a damaged Ethernet cable;
- a faulty router;
- a Canon hardware error;
- a non-working USB port;
- local network blocking by a corporate firewall.
When a Network Administrator Is Required
Contact the administrator if:
- the Mac and Canon printer are in different VLANs;
- multicast or Bonjour is blocked on the network;
- the printer has an address on another subnet;
- a corporate VPN is being used;
- the router settings cannot be changed;
- IP addresses are assigned by a separate DHCP server;
- the office network allows printing only through a server.
When a Service Center Is Required
Contact a service center if:
- the printer cannot make copies without the Mac;
- a support code remains continuously displayed on the touchscreen;
- the Canon printer cannot connect to any network;
- the Ethernet port does not respond to a working cable;
- USB is not detected on several computers;
- the printer restarts unexpectedly;
- the device turns off while printing;
- there is a smell of overheating;
- grinding or loud cracking noises can be heard from the printer.
What You Should Not Do
- do not install a driver intended for another model;
- do not use the old installation disc;
- do not download drivers from third-party websites;
- do not perform a full reset as the first step;
- do not assign a random static IP address;
- do not permanently disable macOS security;
- do not leave several old queues installed;
- do not use a guest network;
- do not reinstall macOS because the printer shows an “Offline” status;
- do not reset the Canon printer’s network settings if it works with other devices;
- do not update the firmware with an incompatible file.
