After a macOS update, a Canon TS9500 Series printer may disappear from the device list, remain continuously offline, or stop accepting print jobs. At the same time, the printer itself may be turned on, connected to Wi-Fi, and continue working from a phone or another computer.
The problem is often caused not by a malfunction of the multifunction printer, but by an outdated print queue, changed network permissions, a new printer IP address, or damaged AirPrint registration.
This guide applies to the following models:
- Canon PIXMA TS9540;
- Canon PIXMA TS9540A;
- Canon PIXMA TS9541C;
- Canon PIXMA TS9541CA;
- Canon PIXMA TS9550;
- Canon PIXMA TS9550A;
- Canon PIXMA TS9551C;
- Canon PIXMA TS9551CA.
In macOS, these models may appear under the common name:
Canon TS9500 series
This guide is intended for:
- macOS Tahoe 26;
- macOS Sequoia 15;
- macOS Sonoma 14;
- macOS Ventura 13;
- Mac computers with Apple silicon;
- Mac computers with Intel processors.
Do not reset the entire printing system immediately
A reset removes all installed printers, information about completed print jobs, and saved print presets from the Mac.
First, clear the queue, restart the devices, and add a new AirPrint queue. Use a full reset only if removing and adding the printer normally does not help.
How the Problem Appears
The following messages may appear on the Mac:
The printer is not responding.
The printer is not responding.
Printer is offline.
The printer is offline.
Unable to connect to printer.
Unable to connect to the printer.
Why the Printer Disappears After a macOS Update
Possible causes include:
- the old print queue is damaged;
- the queue is associated with the printer’s old IP address;
- the router assigned a new IP address to the device;
- the Mac connected to a different Wi-Fi network;
- the printer is connected to a guest network;
- the Mac and printer are in different isolated network segments;
- Bonjour is disabled on the printer;
- a VPN changes the route of local network traffic;
- security software blocks device discovery;
- old Canon software conflicts with the new version of macOS;
- a Canon application is not allowed to access the local network;
- a damaged print job remains in the queue;
- the printer was added by IP address instead of through Bonjour;
- the Mac is trying to print through an old copy of the device;
- the router has not yet restored the network after an update or restart.
Check the Printer First
Before changing any Mac settings, make sure the multifunction printer is working correctly.
- Turn on the printer.
- Wait for the Home screen to appear.
- Check whether a support code is displayed.
- Check that paper is loaded.
- Check the status of the ink tanks.
- Check the Wi-Fi or wired network icon.
If support code 5100, 1300, 1403, 1405, or another hardware code is displayed, resolve that error first. Adding the printer to the Mac again will not repair a mechanical fault.
Test Copying Without a Computer
This test provides a quick way to check the printing component of the multifunction printer.
- Load A4 plain paper.
- Place a document on the scanner glass.
- On the printer’s screen, select Copy.
- Tap Black.
If the copy prints, the printer mechanism is working. Continue checking the Mac and network connection.
If copying does not work, the problem is not related to the macOS update.
Method 1: Check the Queue in Print Center
After an update, an old print job may block the entire queue.
Open Print Center
- Press Command + Space.
- Enter:
Print Center
- Open the application found in the search results.
- Select Canon TS9500 Series in the sidebar.
The queue window may also open automatically after you send a document to the printer.
Resume a Paused Queue
If the Resume button is displayed:
- Click Resume.
- Wait several seconds.
- Check whether printing starts.
Delete Stuck Print Jobs
- Select the first job showing an error.
- Click the button to delete the job.
- Delete the remaining old documents.
- Close Print Center.
- Wait approximately 20 seconds.
After clearing the queue, print a simple document from TextEdit.
Test Printing from TextEdit
- Open the TextEdit application.
- Create a new document.
- Enter several lines of text.
- Select File → Print.
- In the printer field, select Canon TS9500 Series.
- Select one copy.
- Click Print.
If TextEdit prints but another application does not, the problem is related to that application or its saved print settings.
If TextEdit also shows the printer as offline, continue troubleshooting.
Method 2: Restart the Network Correctly
Turning off only the printer is not enough. Restart all devices in the correct order.
- Delete all jobs from the print queue.
- Turn off the printer using the power button.
- Wait until the power lamp turns off.
- Shut down the Mac.
- Disconnect the router from the power supply.
- Wait approximately one minute.
- Reconnect the router to the power supply.
- Wait until the Internet connection and Wi-Fi are fully restored.
- Turn on the printer.
- Wait for the network icon to appear.
- Turn on the Mac.
- Wait one or two minutes.
- Try printing from TextEdit again.
The printer may need some time to register on the Bonjour network again.
Method 3: Check the Mac Network
- On the Mac, open the Apple menu.
- Select System Settings.
- Open Wi-Fi.
- Check the name of the current network.
The Mac and printer must be connected to the same router and be on the same local network.
Check the Printer Network
- On the Canon touchscreen, tap the network icon.
- Select Wi-Fi.
- Open the current settings list.
- Check the SSID network name.
The name should match the home or office network used by the Mac.
If the Band Names Are Different
The router may display:
Home Home_5G
The Mac and printer may use different bands of the same router if the router combines them into one local network.
If the devices cannot detect each other, temporarily connect the Mac to the same 2.4 GHz network as the printer and search again.
Do Not Use a Guest Network
A guest network often prevents connected devices from communicating with each other.
Do not use a network whose name contains:
- Guest;
- Guest Network;
- Visitor;
- Public;
- Hotspot.
Reconnect the Mac and Canon printer to the router’s main network.
Disable the VPN for Testing
A VPN may route network traffic through a remote server and interfere with Bonjour device discovery.
- Quit the VPN application you are using.
- Open System Settings → VPN if that section is displayed.
- Disconnect the active VPN connection.
- Wait several seconds.
- Search for the Canon printer again.
After the printer has been added successfully, you can enable the VPN and test printing again.
If the printer disappears again when the VPN is enabled, configure the VPN application to allow local network traffic.
Method 4: Check Local Network Permission
This section is especially important for macOS Sequoia 15, macOS Tahoe 26, and later versions.
Permission is required for applications that independently search for devices on the local network, including:
- Canon Setup;
- IJ Scan Utility Lite;
- Canon network utilities;
- other installed applications used with the multifunction printer.
- Open the Apple menu.
- Select System Settings.
- Open Privacy & Security.
- Find Local Network.
- Find IJ Scan Utility Lite, Canon Setup, or another Canon application.
- Turn on the switch next to the application.
- Quit the application completely.
- Open it again.
AirPrint and Canon applications are not the same thing
AirPrint system printing may continue to work even if a separate Canon application is not allowed to access the local network.
If only IJ Scan Utility Lite is not working, do not immediately reset the entire printing system. First, check the Local Network permission for that application.
If the Canon Application Is Not Listed Under Permissions
- Open the required Canon application.
- Try to search for the printer or scanner.
- Wait for the system request to access the local network.
- Click Allow.
If the request does not appear:
- quit the application;
- restart the Mac;
- open the application again;
- search for the device again.
Method 5: Add a New AirPrint Queue
You do not have to delete the old printer immediately. First, create a new queue and test it.
Step 1: Open the Add Printer Window
- Open Apple → System Settings.
- Go to Printers & Scanners.
- Click Add Printer, Scanner, or Fax.
- Wait for the search to finish.
It may take one or two minutes for the Canon printer to appear.
Step 2: Select Bonjour Multifunction
- Make sure the Default tab is selected.
- Find Canon TS9500 Series.
- Select the entry whose type is shown as:
Bonjour Multifunction
The name may appear as:
- Canon TS9500 series;
- Canon TS9540 series;
- Canon TS9550 series;
- TS9500 series;
- a custom Bonjour name.
Step 3: Select Secure AirPrint
- Find the Use field.
- Select:
Secure AirPrint
- If Secure AirPrint is unavailable, select AirPrint.
- Do not select a driver intended for a similar model.
Step 4: Temporarily Change the Name
To distinguish the new queue from the old one, you can enter the following name:
Canon TS9500 AirPrint Test
- Click Add.
- Wait for the process to finish.
Step 5: Test the New Queue
- Open TextEdit.
- Create a simple document.
- Select File → Print.
- Select the new Canon TS9500 AirPrint Test queue.
- Start printing.
If the new queue works, remove the old non-working entry.
Remove Only the Old Queue
- Open System Settings → Printers & Scanners.
- Select the old non-working Canon entry.
- Click Remove Printer.
- Confirm the removal.
You can then rename the new queue to the standard name.
Set the New Queue as the Default Printer
- Open System Settings → Printers & Scanners.
- Find the Default printer setting.
- Select the new Canon TS9500 Series queue.
Check the printer selection in applications that were open before the printer was reinstalled. Older applications may continue using the removed queue until they are restarted.
Method 6: Check Bonjour on the Printer
The Mac uses Bonjour to detect the Canon printer automatically on the local network.
- On the printer’s Home screen, tap Setup.
- Select Device settings.
- Open LAN settings.
- Select the connection being used: Wi-Fi or wired LAN.
- Open Advanced.
- Find Bonjour settings.
- For the Bonjour enable setting, select Enable.
After changing the setting:
- turn off the printer;
- wait several seconds;
- turn on the device;
- wait one or two minutes;
- try adding it on the Mac again.
Check the Bonjour Service Name
If several identical Canon printers are on the network, they must have different Bonjour service names.
In the Bonjour settings, you can check a name such as:
Canon_TS9550_Office
Do not use the same name for several network devices.
Method 7: Check the Printer’s IP Address
After a router restart, the printer may receive a new IP address. An old queue created manually by IP address will continue trying to use the previous address.
View the Address on the Canon Screen
- Tap the network icon.
- Select Wi-Fi or wired LAN.
- Open the current settings.
- Find the IPv4 address line.
The address may look like this:
192.168.1.125
Use your printer’s actual address, not the value from this example.
Open the Address in a Browser
- Open Safari.
- Enter the printer’s IP address in the address bar.
- Press Enter.
If the Canon web page opens, the Mac can communicate with the printer on the local network.
If the page does not open:
- check that the address is correct;
- check the Mac network;
- disable the VPN;
- restart the router;
- check guest mode and device isolation.
Method 8: Add the Printer by IP Address
You can use this method for testing if Bonjour does not detect the printer.
Adding by IP address may limit multifunction features
Printing may work, but the scanner may not always be associated automatically with this queue. When Bonjour becomes available again, it is better to add the Canon printer as Bonjour Multifunction.
- Open System Settings → Printers & Scanners.
- Click Add Printer, Scanner, or Fax.
- Open the IP tab.
- Enter the Canon printer’s actual IP address.
- In the protocol field, select AirPrint or Internet Printing Protocol — IPP if these options are available.
- Leave the queue field blank unless the network administrator specified another value.
- Wait for the device to be detected.
- In the Use field, select AirPrint.
- Click Add.
- Print a test document.
If printing by IP works but Bonjour does not, check the Bonjour and router settings.
If the IP Address Changes Continuously
If the problem recurs, you can reserve a permanent address in the router settings.
This feature is usually called:
- DHCP Reservation;
- Address Reservation;
- Static Lease;
- IP Address Reservation;
- IP-to-MAC Binding.
If you are unfamiliar with these settings, consult the network administrator or the router documentation. Do not assign a random static IP address directly on the printer without checking the network settings.
Method 9: Check the Firewall and Security Software
After an update, security software may request local network permission again.
Check:
- whether Canon Setup is blocked;
- whether IJ Scan Utility Lite is allowed;
- whether Bonjour device discovery is allowed;
- whether complete local network blocking is enabled;
- whether a third-party network filter is being used.
If a message appears stating that a Canon application is trying to access the network, allow access to the home or office local network.
Do not disable Mac security permanently. For testing, temporarily pause only the third-party network filter, and then enable it again.
Check the Built-In macOS Firewall
- Open System Settings.
- Go to Network.
- Open Firewall.
- Check the advanced settings.
If Block all incoming connections is enabled, temporarily disable it to test the local printer.
After testing, restore the secure settings and create permission for the required application if that option is available.
Method 10: Disable Old Print Dialog Extensions
Older manufacturer applications may add their own extensions to the standard macOS print dialog. After an update, these extensions may not work correctly.
- Open System Settings → Printers & Scanners.
- Select Canon TS9500 Series.
- Click Options & Supplies.
- Find the setting for using generic printer features.
- Enable Use Generic Printer Features if this option is displayed.
- Click OK.
- Try printing from TextEdit again.
This setting disables some older optional extensions and uses the standard macOS features.
Some Canon-specific settings may no longer be available.
Method 11: Check for macOS Updates
After a major update, Apple may release an additional fix.
- Open Apple → System Settings.
- Go to General.
- Select Software Update.
- Wait for the check to finish.
- Install the available macOS updates.
- Restart the Mac.
After restarting, add the Canon printer again through Bonjour Multifunction and Secure AirPrint.
Do Not Install an Old Driver over AirPrint
Canon TS9500 Series uses AirPrint for basic printing. You do not have to replace AirPrint with an old Canon driver.
An old package may:
- not support the current version of macOS;
- contain an incompatible extension;
- create a second non-working queue;
- be blocked by the system’s security features;
- not support Apple silicon.
If printing and scanning work through AirPrint, a separate driver is not required.
If an Old Installer Is Blocked by macOS
The following message may appear:
“Application” can’t be opened because Apple cannot check it for malicious software.
Do not disable Gatekeeper or other security mechanisms completely.
- Close the installer.
- Delete the old file.
- Check whether AirPrint works without additional software.
- For IJ Scan Utility Lite, download the current file from the official Canon website.
- When selecting the download, specify the actual macOS version.
Method 12: Test the USB Connection
A USB test helps distinguish a network problem from a problem with the Mac or printer.
- Turn on the Canon printer.
- Connect a USB Type-B cable to the printer.
- Connect the other end directly to the Mac.
- Do not use a hub or docking station for the initial test.
- Wait several minutes.
- Open System Settings → Printers & Scanners.
When connected via USB, macOS usually adds the Canon printer automatically.
If USB printing works but the network printer remains offline, the problem is related to the local network, Bonjour, or the old network queue.
If the USB Printer Does Not Appear
- Try another USB port.
- Try another USB Type-B cable.
- Check the USB-C adapter.
- Restart the Mac.
To check whether the device is detected physically:
- Hold down the Option key.
- Open the Apple menu.
- Select System Information.
- Open the USB section.
- Check whether Canon TS9500 Series is listed.
If Canon is not displayed in the USB section, check the cable, adapter, and the printer’s USB port.
Method 13: Reset the Entire Printing System
Use this method only after:
- the queue has been cleared;
- the devices have been restarted;
- the devices have been confirmed to be on the same local network;
- the VPN has been disabled;
- Bonjour has been checked;
- a new AirPrint queue has been created;
- removing the printer normally did not help.
What will be removed
The reset removes all printers from the Mac list, information about completed print jobs, and saved print presets.
After the procedure, you will need to add not only the Canon printer again, but also every other printer you use.
Perform the Reset
- Open Apple → System Settings.
- Go to Printers & Scanners.
- Hold down the Control key and click any printer in the list.
- Select Reset printing system.
- Confirm the action.
If the list is empty, hold down Control, click an empty area of the list, and select the option to reset the printing system.
After the reset is complete, the printer list will be empty.
Restart the Mac After the Reset
- Close System Settings.
- Restart the Mac.
- Restart the printer.
- Wait for the network connection to be restored.
Add the Canon Printer Again
- Open Printers & Scanners.
- Click Add Printer, Scanner, or Fax.
- Select the Canon device whose type is Bonjour Multifunction.
- In the Use field, select Secure AirPrint.
- If Secure AirPrint is unavailable, select AirPrint.
- Click Add.
- Print a test document.
If Canon Does Not Appear After the Reset
Check:
- the Wi-Fi network on the Mac;
- the SSID on the printer;
- the Canon printer’s IP address;
- whether the IP address opens in Safari;
- whether Bonjour is enabled;
- whether a VPN is enabled;
- whether a guest network is being used;
- whether printing from an iPhone through AirPrint works;
- whether the device is detected over USB.
If Safari opens the printer’s web interface but Bonjour cannot find it, the problem is related to network discovery.
If even the IP address does not open, the Mac and printer do not have a normal network connection.
If Printing from an iPhone Works but Printing from the Mac Does Not
This usually means:
- the printer is working correctly;
- AirPrint is working on the printer;
- the error is in the Mac print queue;
- the Mac is connected to another network;
- a VPN or network filter is blocking the Mac;
- the old queue is using the wrong address.
Create a new Bonjour Multifunction queue using Secure AirPrint.
If the Mac Detects Canon but the Status Remains “Offline”
- Open Print Center.
- Delete all print jobs.
- Click Resume if the queue is paused.
- Make sure the correct Canon printer is selected.
- Create a new AirPrint queue.
- Print a test document through the new queue.
- Remove the old entry.
If the Printer Disappears After the Mac Wakes from Sleep
Perform the following steps:
- Wake the printer’s screen and check the network connection.
- Wait one minute after the Mac wakes from sleep.
- Open Print Center.
- Resume the queue.
- If this does not help, turn Wi-Fi off and on again on the Mac.
- Check the printer’s IP address.
- Remove the old queue and add Bonjour Multifunction again.
If the IP address changes regularly, configure an address reservation on the router.
If Several Identical Canon Entries Are Displayed
Duplicate entries may refer to:
- an old AirPrint queue;
- a new AirPrint queue;
- a printer added by IP address;
- a USB connection;
- Wireless Direct;
- an old Bonjour name;
- another printer from the same series.
To check:
- rename the queues with clear names;
- print one test sheet through each queue;
- check whether the Open Scanner button is available;
- keep the working Bonjour Multifunction entry;
- remove the old and non-working queues.
If the Printer Works but the Scanner Disappears
This is a separate problem. Do not reset the entire printing system only because IJ Scan Utility Lite is not working.
First, check:
- whether the Open Scanner button is available in the Canon printer settings;
- whether the scanner is visible in the Image Capture application;
- whether IJ Scan Utility Lite is allowed to access the local network;
- whether Canon was added as Bonjour Multifunction;
- whether the devices are on the same network.
Detailed instructions for restoring network scanning will be provided in a separate article.
Reinstalling a Standard Windows Driver Will Not Help
Windows EXE files cannot be used in macOS.
Do not run the following file on a Mac:
md__-win-ts9500-1_06-ea34_2.exe
This package is intended only for Windows.
When the Problem Is Not Related to the macOS Update
Mac settings will not help if:
- the printer does not turn on;
- a hardware support code is displayed;
- the printer cannot make copies;
- paper is jammed;
- the carriage does not move;
- the ink has run out;
- the printer cannot connect to the router;
- the device is not detected over either the network or USB;
- the printer does not work with other computers.
When to Contact the Network Administrator
Administrator assistance is required if:
- an office network with several VLANs is being used;
- the Mac and printer are on different subnets;
- Bonjour or multicast traffic is blocked on the network;
- a corporate firewall is being used;
- the IP address is assigned by a central server;
- the router settings cannot be changed;
- printer access is allowed only for specific users.
When to Contact a Service Center
Contact a service center if:
- the printer cannot make a copy without a computer;
- a support code remains continuously displayed on the screen;
- the device does not turn on;
- the printer cannot connect to any network;
- the Ethernet port does not respond when a cable is connected;
- USB is not detected on several computers;
- the problem appeared after a power surge;
- cracking or grinding noises can be heard from the device;
- there is a smell of overheating.
What You Should Not Do
- do not reset the printing system as the first step;
- do not install an old driver over a working AirPrint configuration;
- do not download Canon applications from third-party websites;
- do not permanently disable macOS security;
- do not add a driver intended for a similar model;
- do not remove all printers because of one non-working queue;
- do not assign a random static IP address;
- do not use a guest network;
- do not leave several identical non-working queues installed;
- do not reset the printer’s network settings if it works with other devices;
- do not reinstall macOS before checking AirPrint and the print queue.
