Installing Canon TS9540, TS9550, and TS9550A on macOS via Wi-Fi, Ethernet, and USB

Canon PIXMA TS9540, TS9550, and TS9550A multifunction printers can be connected to a Mac via Wi-Fi, a wired Ethernet network, or USB. In macOS, these devices are detected as the Canon TS9500 series family.

A separate Canon driver is usually not required for standard printing. macOS uses the built-in AirPrint technology. It supports the main printing functions and allows you to use the scanner through the standard macOS tools.

This guide applies to the following models:

  • Canon PIXMA TS9540;
  • Canon PIXMA TS9540A;
  • Canon PIXMA TS9541C;
  • Canon PIXMA TS9541CA;
  • Canon PIXMA TS9550;
  • Canon PIXMA TS9550A;
  • Canon PIXMA TS9551C;
  • Canon PIXMA TS9551CA.

The instructions can be used on Macs with Apple silicon M1, M2, M3, M4, and newer-generation processors, as well as older Intel-based Macs.

The main steps apply to:

  • macOS Tahoe 26;
  • macOS Sequoia 15;
  • macOS Sonoma 14;
  • macOS Ventura 13.

Do not use the old installation disc

Modern versions of macOS usually do not require a separate print driver. Older applications from the supplied disc may be incompatible with the current version of macOS or may be blocked by the system’s security features.

First, connect the printer and add it through AirPrint. Install additional Canon applications only from the official support page and only when necessary.

Which Connection Method Should You Choose?

Wi-Fi or Ethernet is recommended for regular use. These connection methods allow you to print and scan from a Mac, iPhone, iPad, and other computers on the local network.

Update macOS Before Installation

  1. Open the Apple menu in the upper-left corner of the screen.
  2. Select System Settings.
  3. Open General.
  4. Select Software Update.
  5. Wait for the check to finish.
  6. Install the available updates.
  7. Restart the Mac if the system asks you to do so.

Updating macOS also updates the built-in AirPrint components and the system tools used for scanning.

Method 1: Connect Canon TS9500 Series via Wi-Fi

The printer and Mac must be connected to the same router. Do not use a guest network if it prevents devices from communicating with each other.

Step 1: Enable Wi-Fi on the Printer

  1. Turn on the Canon TS9500 Series printer.
  2. Wait for the Home screen to appear.
  3. Tap the network icon at the bottom of the touchscreen.
  4. Select Wi-Fi.
  5. Open Settings.
  6. Make sure Wi-Fi is enabled.

The names of some options may vary slightly depending on the printer firmware version.

Step 2: Select the Network Manually

  1. Open the Wi-Fi setup section.
  2. Select Manual connect or wireless router search.
  3. Wait for the list of networks to appear.
  4. Select the name of your Wi-Fi network.
  5. Enter the network password.
  6. Check the capitalization, numbers, and special characters.
  7. Confirm the connection.
  8. Wait for the successful connection message.
  9. Return to the Home screen.

After a successful connection, an active wireless network icon should appear on the screen.

If the Router Displays Two Networks

The router may use both the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands at the same time. Their names may look like this:

Home
Home_5G

If the printer cannot detect one of the networks, select the available 2.4 GHz network. The Mac may remain connected to another band of the same router, provided that both bands are part of the same local network and the router does not isolate the devices.

Do Not Connect to a Guest Network

It is not recommended to select a network whose name contains:

  • Guest;
  • Guest Network;
  • Visitor;
  • Public.

Guest mode often blocks communication between devices. As a result, the Mac may have Internet access but still be unable to detect the printer.

Add a Network Printer in macOS

Step 1: Open the Printer List

  1. On the Mac, open the Apple menu.
  2. Select System Settings.
  3. In the sidebar, open Printers & Scanners.
  4. Click Add Printer, Scanner, or Fax.

The device search window will open. It may take several minutes for the list to appear.

Step 2: Select the Correct Canon Entry

  1. Make sure the Default tab is selected at the top of the window.
  2. Wait for Canon TS9500 Series to appear.
  3. Select the device whose type is shown as:
    Bonjour Multifunction

The device name may appear in different forms:

  • Canon TS9500 series;
  • Canon TS9540 series;
  • Canon TS9550 series;
  • TS9500 series;
  • a custom Bonjour name assigned by the printer owner.

If several identical devices are displayed, compare their network names or MAC addresses.

Step 3: Select AirPrint

  1. After selecting the printer, find the Use field.
  2. Select:
    Secure AirPrint
  3. If Secure AirPrint is unavailable but AirPrint is listed, select AirPrint.
  4. Do not select software intended for another model.
  5. Click Add.

Wait while macOS creates the print queue and adds the scanning component of the device.

Select Bonjour Multifunction

The list may contain a separate printer or scanner entry. For a Canon multifunction printer, it is preferable to select the device whose type is Bonjour Multifunction.

This entry is intended to support both printing and scanning.

Test Printing over Wi-Fi

  1. Open the TextEdit application.
  2. Create a new document.
  3. Enter several lines of text.
  4. Open the File menu.
  5. Select Print.
  6. In the Printer field, select Canon TS9500 Series.
  7. Select A4 as the paper size.
  8. Select one copy.
  9. Click Print.

If the page prints, the connection and AirPrint are configured correctly.

Check the Built-In Scanner

  1. Open Apple → System Settings.
  2. Go to Printers & Scanners.
  3. Select Canon TS9500 Series.
  4. Click Open Scanner.

If the button is available, macOS has detected the scanning component of the multifunction printer.

Test Scanning from the Platen

  1. Place the document face down on the scanner glass.
  2. Align it with the mark in the corner of the glass.
  3. Close the cover.
  4. In the scanning window, select the flatbed scanner mode.
  5. Select color or black-and-white mode.
  6. Set the resolution to 300 dpi.
  7. Select the save folder.
  8. Click Scan.

Test Scanning Through the ADF

  1. Remove the original from the scanner glass.
  2. Open the automatic document feeder tray.
  3. Load the document with the side to be scanned facing up.
  4. Move the document guides against the edges of the paper.
  5. In the scanner window, enable Use Document Feeder.
  6. Select the format and resolution.
  7. Click Scan.

Method 2: Connect via Ethernet

With a wired connection, the printer is connected to the router using an Ethernet cable. Connecting an Ethernet cable directly between the printer and Mac is usually unnecessary.

Step 1: Connect the Network Cable

  1. Place the printer near the router or a network wall outlet.
  2. Connect one end of the Ethernet cable to the network port on the rear of the printer.
  3. Connect the other end to an available LAN port on the router.
  4. Make sure the connectors click into place.

Step 2: Enable the Wired Network

  1. On the printer’s Home screen, tap the network icon.
  2. Select Wired LAN.
  3. Open Settings.
  4. Select the option to enable or disable the wired LAN.
  5. Set it to Enable.
  6. Return to the Home screen.

After the connection is established, a wired network icon should appear on the screen.

Wi-Fi and Ethernet cannot be used on the printer at the same time

After the wired LAN is enabled, the printer’s wireless connection may be disabled. The Mac can remain connected to the same router over Wi-Fi.

Step 3: Add the Printer on the Mac

  1. Open System Settings → Printers & Scanners.
  2. Click Add Printer, Scanner, or Fax.
  3. Wait for the Canon device to appear.
  4. Select the entry whose type is Bonjour Multifunction.
  5. In the Use field, select Secure AirPrint or AirPrint.
  6. Click Add.

The Mac does not have to be connected to the router by cable. It can use Wi-Fi as long as it is on the same local network.

Method 3: Connect via USB

With a USB connection, the printer works only with the computer to which the cable is connected, unless printer sharing is also configured on the Mac.

Which Cable Is Required?

The printer uses a USB Type-B port. It has an almost square shape.

Depending on the Mac model, you will need:

  • a USB-A to USB-B cable;
  • a USB-C to USB-B cable;
  • a USB-A to USB-B cable and a USB-C adapter.

The cable and adapter must support data transfer. A charge-only cable will not work.

Step 1: Connect the Printer

  1. Turn on the Canon TS9500 Series printer.
  2. Wait for the Home screen to appear.
  3. Connect the USB-B plug to the port on the rear of the printer.
  4. Connect the other end of the cable directly to the Mac.

For the initial test, do not use:

  • a low-quality USB hub;
  • an old docking station;
  • a long USB extension cable;
  • a USB port on a monitor;
  • a damaged adapter.

Step 2: Wait for Automatic Addition

After the printer is connected via USB, macOS usually adds it automatically.

  1. Wait several minutes.
  2. Open System Settings → Printers & Scanners.
  3. Check whether Canon TS9500 Series appears.

If the printer appears, open TextEdit and perform a test print.

If the USB Printer Is Not Added Automatically

  1. Open System Settings → Printers & Scanners.
  2. Click Add Printer, Scanner, or Fax.
  3. Select the Canon printer connected via USB.
  4. In the Use field, select AirPrint if this option is available.
  5. Click Add.

If the Mac Does Not Respond to the USB Connection

  1. Disconnect the USB cable.
  2. Turn off the printer.
  3. Restart the Mac.
  4. Turn on the printer.
  5. Connect the cable to another port.
  6. Try another working cable.
  7. If an adapter is being used, try another adapter that supports data transfer.

To check whether the device is detected:

  1. Hold down the Option key.
  2. Open the Apple menu.
  3. Select System Information.
  4. Open the USB section.
  5. Check whether Canon TS9500 Series is listed.

If the printer does not appear even in the USB section, the problem is related to the cable, adapter, port, or the printer’s USB connector.

Direct Wireless Connection Without a Router

Canon TS9500 Series supports Wireless Direct. In this mode, the printer creates its own wireless network.

The network name looks similar to:

DIRECT-XX-TS9500series

This method is useful when no router is available nearby. However, when the Mac connects to the printer’s network, Internet access may be temporarily unavailable.

Enable Wireless Direct

  1. On the Home screen, tap the network icon.
  2. Select Wireless Direct.
  3. Enable the mode.
  4. Open the settings list.
  5. Write down the network name and password.

Connect the Mac

  1. On the Mac, click the Wi-Fi icon.
  2. Select the network whose name begins with DIRECT.
  3. Enter the password shown on the printer’s screen.
  4. Add the Canon printer through Printers & Scanners.
  5. Select AirPrint.

For regular use, it is more convenient to connect the printer and Mac to a standard router.

If Canon Does Not Appear in the macOS List

Check the following conditions:

  1. The printer is turned on.
  2. No error is displayed on the touchscreen.
  3. The Mac and printer are connected to the same network.
  4. The printer is not connected to a guest network.
  5. The VPN is disabled on the Mac.
  6. The router is not using wireless client isolation.
  7. Bonjour is enabled on the printer.
  8. At least one minute has passed since the printer was turned on.

Restart the Network Devices

  1. Turn off the printer.
  2. Restart the router.
  3. Wait until Internet access is fully restored.
  4. Turn on the printer.
  5. Wait one or two minutes.
  6. Restart the Mac.
  7. Search again.

Check Bonjour on the Printer

AirPrint uses Bonjour to discover the network device.

  1. On the printer, open Setup.
  2. Select Device settings.
  3. Open LAN settings.
  4. Select the connection being used: Wi-Fi or wired LAN.
  5. Open the advanced settings.
  6. Find Bonjour settings.
  7. Set it to Enable.

After changing the setting, turn the printer off and on again, and then try adding it on the Mac again.

Local Network Permission in macOS 15 and Later

In macOS Sequoia 15, macOS Tahoe 26, and later versions, applications must obtain separate permission to discover devices on the local network.

This is particularly important when using:

  • Canon Setup;
  • IJ Scan Utility Lite;
  • other Canon network utilities.
  1. Open System Settings.
  2. Select Privacy & Security.
  3. Open Local Network.
  4. Find the Canon application.
  5. Turn on the switch next to it.
  6. Quit the application completely.
  7. Open it again.

If the application is not listed, start it and search for the printer again. macOS may display a new request for local network access.

Add Canon by IP Address

Use this method if the printer is connected to the network but does not appear in the Bonjour list.

Step 1: Find the IP Address

  1. On the printer, open Setup.
  2. Select Device settings.
  3. Open LAN settings.
  4. Select the connection being used.
  5. Open the current settings list.
  6. Find the IPv4 address line.

The address looks similar to:

192.168.1.125

Use the actual address of your printer, not the value from this example.

Step 2: Add the Device

  1. On the Mac, open System Settings → Printers & Scanners.
  2. Click Add Printer, Scanner, or Fax.
  3. Open the IP tab.
  4. Enter the printer’s address.
  5. For the protocol, first select AirPrint or IPP if that option is available.
  6. Leave the queue field blank unless the network requires another value.
  7. In the Use field, select AirPrint.
  8. Click Add.

When the printer is added through a general network protocol, some multifunction features may be limited. If the device later appears as Bonjour Multifunction, it is recommended to use the Bonjour entry.

If Several Canon Entries Appear

Identical entries may refer to:

  • Wi-Fi;
  • Ethernet;
  • USB;
  • an old IP address;
  • Wireless Direct;
  • a previously installed print queue.

To select the correct entry:

  1. Open each queue one at a time.
  2. Print a simple document.
  3. Check whether the Open Scanner button is available.
  4. Keep the working Bonjour Multifunction entry.
  5. Remove old non-working entries.

How to Remove an Incorrect Entry

  1. Open System Settings → Printers & Scanners.
  2. Select the unnecessary printer.
  3. Click Remove Printer.
  4. Confirm the removal.

Do not reset the entire printing system because of one unnecessary entry. First, remove only the problematic printer.

If Printing Works but Scanning Is Unavailable

Check:

  1. Whether a Bonjour Multifunction device was added.
  2. Whether AirPrint is being used.
  3. Whether the Mac and printer are connected to the same network.
  4. Whether the printer’s IP address has changed.
  5. Whether the Open Scanner button is available.

Try removing the Canon printer and adding it again as Bonjour Multifunction.

For an additional check, open the Image Capture application:

  1. Press Command + Space.
  2. Enter Image Capture.
  3. Open the application.
  4. Check whether Canon appears on the left side of the window.

If the printer is displayed but the available advanced features are insufficient, you can install the current version of IJ Scan Utility Lite from the official Canon website.

Do You Need to Install IJ Scan Utility Lite?

The application is not required for basic scanning. macOS allows you to scan through:

  • Printers & Scanners;
  • the Image Capture application;
  • the Preview application.

IJ Scan Utility Lite is useful when you need:

  • preset document and photo scanning modes;
  • simplified file saving;
  • additional image processing settings;
  • support for multipage documents;
  • Canon-specific features.

Download the application only from the official support page for your model and only after selecting the installed version of macOS.

If macOS Blocks an Old Canon Installer

The following message may appear:

“Application” can’t be opened because Apple cannot check it for malicious software.

Do not disable macOS security completely.

  1. Close the old installer.
  2. Delete it.
  3. Open the official Canon support page.
  4. Select your model.
  5. Select the actual macOS version.
  6. Download the current version of the required application.

If basic printing and scanning through AirPrint already work, you do not need to install old software.

Set Canon as the Default Printer

  1. Open System Settings → Printers & Scanners.
  2. Find the Default printer setting.
  3. Select Canon TS9500 Series.

Most applications will then automatically select Canon in the print window.

Check the Default Paper Size

  1. Open System Settings → Printers & Scanners.
  2. Find the Default paper size setting.
  3. Select A4 for standard use.

When printing on A3 paper, photo paper, or envelopes, the paper size must also be selected in the window for the specific print job.

What to Do If the First Print Job Does Not Start

  1. Check the printer’s touchscreen.
  2. Make sure the correct paper size is specified.
  3. Check the media type.
  4. On the Mac, open Print Center.
  5. Check whether the queue is paused.
  6. Remove the stuck print job.
  7. Try printing from TextEdit again.

If the following message appears:

The printer is not responding.

check the network, restart the devices, and add the printer again as Bonjour Multifunction.

Installation on Apple Silicon and Intel Macs

When AirPrint is used, the steps are the same for:

  • MacBook Air and MacBook Pro with Apple silicon;
  • iMac and Mac mini with Apple silicon;
  • Mac Studio;
  • older Intel-based Macs.

Differences may occur only when installing older optional Canon applications. An old application designed only for Intel may run through Rosetta 2 or may not support the latest version of macOS at all.

AirPrint does not require Rosetta 2.

When Additional Software Is Not Required

You do not need to install additional Canon applications if:

  • the Mac detects the printer;
  • documents print successfully;
  • the Open Scanner button is available;
  • scanning from the platen and ADF works;
  • the available AirPrint settings are sufficient.

When Canon Software May Be Required

Additional software may be needed if:

  • advanced scanning settings are required;
  • you need a convenient way to create multipage PDF files;
  • Canon-specific document processing workflows are required;
  • standard macOS scanning does not detect the device;
  • Canon support recommends a specific utility.

Quick Wi-Fi Installation Procedure

  1. Update macOS.
  2. Turn on the printer.
  3. Connect it to a home or office Wi-Fi network.
  4. Connect the Mac to the same network.
  5. Disable the VPN.
  6. Open System Settings → Printers & Scanners.
  7. Click Add Printer, Scanner, or Fax.
  8. Select the Canon device whose type is Bonjour Multifunction.
  9. In the Use field, select Secure AirPrint or AirPrint.
  10. Click Add.
  11. Print a document from TextEdit.
  12. Open the built-in scanner and perform a test scan.

Quick Ethernet Installation Procedure

  1. Connect the printer to the router using an Ethernet cable.
  2. Enable the wired LAN on the touchscreen.
  3. Connect the Mac to the same router.
  4. Open the printer list.
  5. Select Bonjour Multifunction.
  6. Select Secure AirPrint or AirPrint.
  7. Add the device.
  8. Test printing and scanning.

Quick USB Installation Procedure

  1. Turn on the printer.
  2. Connect it to the Mac using a working USB cable.
  3. Use an adapter that supports data transfer if the Mac has only USB-C ports.
  4. Wait for the printer to be added automatically.
  5. Open Printers & Scanners.
  6. If Canon is missing, add it manually.
  7. Select AirPrint if this option is available.
  8. Print a test document.
  9. Check the Open Scanner button.
