After updating to macOS Sequoia 15 or macOS Tahoe 26, Canon applications may stop detecting the printer and scanner on the local network. Printing through AirPrint may continue to work, while IJ Scan Utility Lite displays an empty device list, reports a communication error, or does not allow a scanned document to be sent from the multifunction printer’s operation panel to the Mac.
The cause may be the new Local Network system permission. It controls access by individual applications to printers, scanners, televisions, and other devices connected to a home or office router.
This guide applies to the following models:
- Canon PIXMA TS9540;
- Canon PIXMA TS9540A;
- Canon PIXMA TS9541C;
- Canon PIXMA TS9541CA;
- Canon PIXMA TS9550;
- Canon PIXMA TS9550A;
- Canon PIXMA TS9551C;
- Canon PIXMA TS9551CA.
In macOS and Canon applications, the device may appear under the common name:
Canon TS9500 series
This article is intended primarily for:
- macOS Sequoia 15;
- macOS Tahoe 26;
- later macOS versions with Local Network access permission;
- Mac computers with Apple silicon;
- Mac computers with Intel processors.
Important for macOS 15 and later
Canon applications must be allowed to discover devices on the local network. If access is denied, the application may fail to detect the multifunction printer, display a communication error, or work only over USB.
You usually need to enable permission for Canon IJ Scan Utility Lite and CIJSULAgent if these components appear in the list.
What Local Network Permission Means
A local network consists of devices connected to the same home or office router.
For example, the following devices may be on the same local network:
- a Mac computer;
- a Canon printer;
- an iPhone and iPad;
- other computers;
- network storage devices;
- televisions and media players.
A Canon application uses the local network to:
- find the multifunction printer;
- determine its network name;
- establish communication with the scanner;
- refresh the list of available devices;
- receive a scanning command from the printer’s operation panel;
- transfer the scanned file to the Mac;
- perform initial network setup.
If the user clicked Don’t Allow when the application was first started, macOS remembers that choice. The request may not appear again until permission is enabled manually.
Which Canon Applications Should Be Allowed
Depending on the installed components and how the printer is used, the following items may appear under Local Network:
- Canon IJ Scan Utility Lite;
- CIJSULAgent;
- Canon Setup;
- other official Canon utilities.
Canon states that the list may contain all of these components or only some of them.
Canon IJ Scan Utility Lite
This is the main application for scanning documents and photos.
It provides the following buttons:
- Auto;
- Document;
- Photo;
- Custom;
- Stitch;
- OCR;
- ScanGear — for supported configurations.
Without Local Network access, the application may fail to detect a network-connected Canon device.
CIJSULAgent
CIJSULAgent is an auxiliary background component of IJ Scan Utility Lite.
It may be involved in:
- scanner discovery;
- refreshing the network device list;
- scanning from the multifunction printer’s operation panel;
- maintaining communication between the Canon printer and Mac.
If both IJ Scan Utility Lite and CIJSULAgent appear in the list, it is recommended that permission be enabled for both components.
Canon Setup
Canon Setup is used when initially connecting the multifunction printer to the network. If the application does not receive access, it may report that the printer cannot be found even when the device is already connected to the router.
How Blocked Access Appears
Possible symptoms include:
- IJ Scan Utility Lite does not display the Canon device;
- the Scanner field remains empty;
- the device does not appear after clicking Refresh;
- the application displays Error 157;
- Canon Setup cannot find the printer;
- AirPrint printing works, but scanning does not;
- scanning works over USB but not over Wi-Fi;
- the Mac does not appear on the Canon touchscreen;
- scanning from the multifunction printer’s operation panel does not start;
- the scanner disappeared after a macOS update;
- the Canon application starts but cannot complete the search;
- the application becomes unresponsive when you try to select a network scanner;
- the built-in Image Capture application detects Canon, but IJ Scan Utility Lite does not.
Typical IJ Scan Utility Lite Message
When network access is blocked, the following message may appear:
Cannot communicate with scanner for these reasons: - Scanner is turned off. - Scanner is disconnected. - Signal strength is poor due to obstructions. - Network connection is prohibited by security software. - Different scanner on the network is selected.
Error code:
Error 157
Error 157 is not always caused specifically by macOS permission. It may also appear because of an incorrect network, disabled Bonjour, weak Wi-Fi, or another Canon device being selected.
Why AirPrint May Work While IJ Scan Utility Lite Does Not
AirPrint is a built-in macOS system technology. IJ Scan Utility Lite is a separate Canon application.
Therefore, the following situation is possible:
- documents print through AirPrint;
- the Open Scanner button works;
- Image Capture detects the multifunction printer;
- IJ Scan Utility Lite cannot find the Canon device.
In this case, do not remove the working printer or reset the printing system. Check permissions for the Canon applications first.
Method 1: Enable Local Network Access
Step 1: Open Privacy Settings
- Open the Apple menu in the upper-left corner of the screen.
- Select System Settings.
- In the sidebar, open Privacy & Security.
- Scroll down if the required item is not visible.
- Select Local Network.
A list of applications that have requested access to local devices will open.
Step 2: Find the Canon Applications
Check for the following components:
- Canon IJ Scan Utility Lite;
- CIJSULAgent;
- Canon Setup;
- other Canon applications you use.
Step 3: Turn On the Switches
- Turn on the switch next to Canon IJ Scan Utility Lite.
- Turn on the switch next to CIJSULAgent.
- Enable access for Canon Setup if you use the setup application.
- Enter the administrator password or confirm the action with Touch ID if macOS requests it.

- To do this, press:
Command + Q
- Wait several seconds.
- Start IJ Scan Utility Lite again.
- Click Refresh next to the Scanner list.
- Select Canon TS9500 Series.
Closing the window does not always quit the application
The red button in the upper-left corner closes the window, but the application may continue running in the background.
After changing permission, quit IJ Scan Utility Lite from the application menu or by pressing Command + Q.
Method 2: If Canon IJ Scan Utility Lite Is Missing from the List
You cannot manually add an arbitrary application to the Local Network section. It appears only after the application itself requests access to network devices.
- Close System Settings.
- Start IJ Scan Utility Lite.
- Make sure the Canon printer is turned on.
- Click Refresh.
- Try opening the Scanner list.
- Wait for the macOS system prompt.
A message may appear stating that the application wants to find devices on the local network.
Click:
Allow
Then open:
System Settings → Privacy & Security → Local Network
Check whether the Canon component has appeared.
If the System Prompt Does Not Appear
- Quit IJ Scan Utility Lite completely.
- Turn off the Canon printer.
- Restart the Mac.
- Turn on the Canon printer.
- Wait for the multifunction printer to connect to the network.

- Refresh the Scanner list again.
If the application still does not appear:
- check whether the current version is installed;
- reinstall IJ Scan Utility Lite from the official Canon website;
- start scanner discovery after installation;
- allow network access when the prompt appears.
Method 3: If CIJSULAgent Is Missing from the List
CIJSULAgent may appear only after functions requiring background communication are used.
It is normal if:
- only Canon IJ Scan Utility Lite is listed;
- scanning from the Mac already works;
- scanning from the multifunction printer’s operation panel has not been used;
- the installed application version works without a separate agent entry.
You do not need to find and install CIJSULAgent separately.
To make the component appear:
- start IJ Scan Utility Lite;
- select the correct Canon device;
- open the operation panel scanning settings;
- enable scanning from the multifunction printer’s operation panel;
- click Refresh;
- try finding the Mac from the Canon operation panel.
If macOS displays an access request, click Allow.
Method 4: Check Scanning Through Image Capture
Before reinstalling Canon software, check system scanning.
- Press Command + Space.
- Enter:
Image Capture
- Open the application.
- Check the device list on the left.
- Select Canon TS9500 Series.
- Place a document on the scanner glass.
- Perform a test scan.
If Image Capture Works
This means that:
- the Canon printer is connected to the network;
- macOS system scanning is working;
- the problem is related to IJ Scan Utility Lite or its permissions.
Do not perform a full printing system reset.
If Image Capture Also Cannot Detect Canon
Check:
- whether both devices are on the same local network;
- Bonjour;
- the Bonjour Multifunction queue;
- the VPN;
- guest mode;
- the network filter;
- the Canon printer’s IP address.
Method 5: Check the “Open Scanner” Button
- Open Apple → System Settings.
- Go to Printers & Scanners.
- Select Canon TS9500 Series.

If the button is available and scanning works, the system component is functioning.
If the button is missing, the current queue may have been added for printing only.
Add Canon as Bonjour Multifunction
- Open System Settings → Printers & Scanners.
- Click Add Printer, Scanner, or Fax.
- Open the Default tab.
- Wait for the search to finish.
- Select the Canon device whose type is:
Bonjour Multifunction

Secure AirPrint
- If Secure AirPrint is unavailable, select AirPrint.
- Click Add.
After adding the device, check:
- the Open Scanner button;
- the Image Capture application;
- the Scanner list in IJ Scan Utility Lite.
Method 6: Make Sure Both Devices Are on the Same Network
Check the Network on the Mac
- Open System Settings.
- Select Wi-Fi.
- Write down the name of the active network.
Check the Network on the Canon Printer
- Tap the network icon on the touchscreen.
- Select Wi-Fi.
- Open the current connection information.
- Check the SSID value.
The Mac and Canon printer must be on the same local network.
Do Not Use Guest Wi-Fi
Do not connect the devices to a network whose name contains:
- Guest;
- Guest Network;
- Visitor;
- Public;
- Hotspot.
A guest network may provide Internet access but block communication between the Mac and multifunction printer.
Method 7: Disable the VPN
Even when Local Network access is allowed, the Canon application may fail to detect the printer if a VPN blocks local traffic.
- Quit IJ Scan Utility Lite.
- Disconnect the VPN application.
- Open System Settings → VPN if the section is available.
- Disconnect the active connection.
- Start IJ Scan Utility Lite again.
- Click Refresh.
If the Canon printer appears, look for one of the following functions in the VPN settings:
- Allow LAN Traffic;
- Local Network Access;

- Allow Local Network Access.
Method 8: Check Bonjour on the Printer
Canon uses Bonjour to discover the multifunction printer in macOS.
- On the Canon screen, select Setup.
- Open Device settings.
- Select LAN settings.
- Select Wi-Fi or the wired network.
- Open Advanced settings.
- Select Bonjour settings.
- For the Bonjour enable setting, select Enable.
Also check the Bonjour service name.
After changing the setting:
- turn off the Canon printer;
- turn it on again;
- wait one or two minutes;
- restart IJ Scan Utility Lite;
- refresh the Scanner list.

- Find the IPv4 address.
Example:
192.168.1.125
Use your device’s actual address.
- Open Safari.
- Enter the Canon printer’s IP address.
- Press Enter.
If the Remote UI page opens:
- the Mac has network access to the Canon printer;
- check the application permissions;
- check Bonjour;
- check the selected scanner.
If the page does not open, the problem is not limited to macOS permission. Check the local network.
Method 10: Check Scanning from the Canon Operation Panel
Local Network permission is also important when you want to start scanning from the multifunction printer’s touchscreen and send the file to the Mac.
Enable the Function in IJ Scan Utility Lite
- Start IJ Scan Utility Lite.
- Open the operation panel scanning settings.
- Select the checkbox:
Enables scanning from the operation panel
- Save the settings.
- Return to the main application window.
- Click Refresh.
Search for the Mac Again from the Operation Panel
- On the Canon touchscreen, select Scan.
- Select the option to save to a computer.
- Start searching for available computers.
- Select your Mac.
If the Mac is missing:
- check permission for CIJSULAgent;
- check permission for IJ Scan Utility Lite;
- do not quit the Canon background components;
- make sure both devices are on the same network;
- disable the VPN;
- check Bonjour;
- restart the Canon printer and Mac.
If Printing Works but the Mac Does Not Appear on the Multifunction Printer’s Operation Panel
AirPrint printing does not guarantee that the Canon background agent is registered for scanning from the operation panel.
Perform the following steps:
- start IJ Scan Utility Lite;
- check the selected scanner;
- enable scanning from the operation panel;
- allow Local Network access for IJ Scan Utility Lite;
- allow Local Network access for CIJSULAgent;
- click Refresh;
- repeat the search from the Canon operation panel.
If USB Works but Wi-Fi Does Not
This is a typical sign of a network problem.
With a USB connection, the application does not need to search for the multifunction printer through the local router.
Check:
- Local Network permission;
- whether the SSID is the same;
- Bonjour;
- the VPN;
- the guest network;
- the device selected in IJ Scan Utility Lite;
- the network filter.
If Wi-Fi Works but Ethernet Does Not
After changing the connection type, the detected Canon entry may change.
- Connect the Ethernet cable to the router.
- Enable the wired network on the Canon printer.
- Wait for the printer to receive an IP address.
- Quit IJ Scan Utility Lite.
- Start the application again.
- Click Refresh.
- Select the new Canon entry.
The Mac can remain connected to the same router over Wi-Fi.
After Updating IJ Scan Utility Lite
After reinstalling or performing a major application update, macOS may request Local Network access again.
Check the permissions again if:
- the application name changed;
- a new Canon entry appeared;
- the old entry is disabled;
- the application cannot detect the scanner again;
- CIJSULAgent appeared separately.
After Updating macOS
After a major system update:
- restart the Mac;
- restart the Canon printer;
- check the Local Network section;
- enable the Canon permissions;
- restart IJ Scan Utility Lite;
- refresh the Scanner list;
- perform a test scan.
If the Switch Is On but the Application Still Does Not Work
Local Network permission is only one possible cause.
Also check:
- whether the Canon printer is turned on;
- whether a support code is displayed;
- whether both devices are on the same network;
- whether Remote UI opens;
- whether Bonjour is enabled;
- whether the correct scanner is selected;
- whether the scanner is being used by another application;
- whether a VPN is blocking communication;
- whether guest Wi-Fi is being used;
- whether IJ Scan Utility Lite is damaged.
Restart All Devices
- Quit IJ Scan Utility Lite.
- Turn off the Canon printer.
- Shut down the Mac.
- Disconnect the router from the power supply.
- Wait approximately one minute.
- Turn on the router.
- Wait for the network to be restored.
- Turn on the Canon printer.
- Wait for the active network icon.
- Turn on the Mac.
- Start IJ Scan Utility Lite.
- Click Refresh.
Reinstall IJ Scan Utility Lite
Reinstallation may be required if:
- the application is missing from the Local Network section;
- the permission request never appears;
- the application closes immediately;
- Error 201 appears;
- the components were transferred from an old Mac;
- an outdated application version is being used.
- Quit the Canon applications.
- Open the official support page for your model.
- Select the actual macOS version.
- Download the current version of IJ Scan Utility Lite.
- Start the installer.
- Follow the macOS instructions.
- Restart the Mac.
- Start IJ Scan Utility Lite.
- Allow Local Network access.
- Select Canon in the Scanner field.
If macOS Blocks the Installer
The following message may appear:
“Application” can’t be opened because Apple cannot check it for malicious software.
Do not disable macOS security completely.
- Close the installer.
- Delete the old file.
- Make sure the correct macOS version is selected.
- Download the current file from the official Canon website.
Do Not Enable Unnecessary Permissions
Detecting a network-connected Canon device requires Local Network permission.
You usually do not need to grant:
- Full Disk Access;
- microphone access;
- camera access;
- permission to control all applications;
- Accessibility access;
- location access.
Folder access permission may be required separately if the application cannot save the scanned file.
Do Not Disable the Firewall or Gatekeeper Permanently
IJ Scan Utility Lite does not require macOS security to be disabled completely.
It is not recommended to:
- disable Gatekeeper completely;
- disable system protection;
- allow all incoming connections;
- install unsigned applications;
- download Canon utilities from third-party websites.
Allow network access only for official applications that you installed yourself.
Corporate Mac
On a work computer, some settings may be managed by the organization.
Contact the system administrator if:
- the switch is unavailable;
- the Local Network setting cannot be changed;
- the Canon application is blocked automatically;
- a corporate VPN is being used;
- the Mac and Canon printer are in different VLANs;
- Bonjour is prohibited by organizational policy;
- installing applications requires an administrator profile.
Multiple User Accounts on One Mac
Privacy settings may differ for different users.
If Canon works for one user but not another:
- sign in to the affected user account;
- open Privacy & Security;
- check Local Network;
- enable the Canon applications;
- start IJ Scan Utility Lite;
- select the required scanner.
Do You Need to Reset the Printing System?
No, if:
- AirPrint printing works;
- Canon appears in Printers & Scanners;
- only IJ Scan Utility Lite is not working;
- the error is related to application permission;
- USB scanning works.
Resetting the printing system does not restore Local Network permission for a third-party application.
Consider a full reset only when printing and system scanning both fail and removing and adding the multifunction printer normally did not help.
Do You Need to Reinstall macOS?
No. Missing Local Network permission does not require the operating system to be reinstalled.
It is usually enough to:
- enable permission;
- restart the application;
- refresh the device list;
- select the correct Canon printer;
- check Bonjour and make sure both devices are on the same network.
When the Problem Is Not Related to Permission
The Local Network setting will not help if:
- the Canon printer is turned off;
- a hardware error is displayed on the screen;
- the multifunction printer is not connected to the router;
- the Mac is connected to another network;
- guest Wi-Fi is being used;
- Bonjour is disabled;
- the Wi-Fi signal is too weak;
- the scanner is being used by another application;
- IJ Scan Utility Lite is damaged;
- the Canon printer cannot make copies without a computer.
When a Service Center Is Required
Contact a service center if:
- the multifunction printer cannot make copies;
- the scanning unit does not move;
- a support code remains continuously displayed on the screen;
- the scanner does not work over either the network or USB on several computers;
- the device was damaged after being dropped;
- liquid entered the device;
- there is a smell of overheating;
- a grinding noise can be heard during scanning.
