A Canon TS9500 Series printer may spend a long time processing a job before printing starts, pause for extended periods between pages, or print much more slowly than it did previously. In some cases, this is normal behavior related to print quality, ink drying, or processing a large file. In other cases, the cause is a weak network connection, Quiet Mode, or incorrect driver settings.
This guide applies to the following models:
- Canon PIXMA TS9540;
- Canon PIXMA TS9540A;
- Canon PIXMA TS9541C;
- Canon PIXMA TS9550;
- Canon PIXMA TS9550A;
- Canon PIXMA TS9551C;
- Canon PIXMA TS9551CA.
All the models listed above belong to the Canon TS9500 series and use the same basic print speed settings in Windows.
Do not turn off the printer immediately
If the power lamp is flashing, the computer or printer may still be processing and transferring data. Large photos, PDF files, and documents containing graphics take longer than usual to start printing.
First, wait several minutes and check the print queue. Turning off the printer while data is being transferred will cancel the job.
Method 1: Check Copying Speed Without a Computer
This test helps determine whether the delay is related to Windows.
- Load A4 plain paper in the cassette.
- Confirm A4 as the paper size on the touchscreen.
- Select Plain paper as the paper type.
- Place a simple text document on the scanner glass.
- On the Home screen, select Copy.
- Select standard quality.
- Tap Black.
If the copy is produced at normal speed, the printer itself is probably working correctly. Check the driver, file, print queue, and computer connection.
If copying has also become very slow, disable Quiet Mode and check the printer’s own settings.
Method 2: Disable Quiet Mode on the Printer
Quiet Mode reduces mechanical operating noise, but it also reduces the printer’s speed.
- Turn on the printer.
- Wait for the Home screen to appear.
- Tap the Setup icon.
- Select Quiet setting or Quiet Mode.
- Select Do not use quiet mode.
- Confirm the change.
- Try printing again.
If the speed increases after Quiet Mode is disabled, there is no malfunction. The slower operation was caused by Quiet Mode.
Method 3: Disable Quiet Mode Through Windows
The setting may have been enabled through the driver and applied to all jobs sent from the computer.
- Open the Start menu.
- Find the Canon Utilities folder.
- Start Canon IJ Printer Assistant Tool.
- Select Quiet Settings.
- Select Do not use quiet mode.
- Click Send.
- Confirm the change.
If Canon IJ Printer Assistant Tool is not displayed in the menu:
- Press Windows + R.
- Enter:
control printers
- Click OK.
- Right-click Canon TS9500 series.
- Select Printing preferences.
- Open the Maintenance tab.
- Click Quiet Settings.
- Disable Quiet Mode and save the settings.
The section names may vary slightly depending on the driver version.
Method 4: Reduce the Print Quality
High-quality mode uses more print head passes. This is especially noticeable when printing photos and large-format images.
- Open the document.
- Click File → Print.
- Select Canon TS9500 series.
- Click Printer properties, Settings, or Preferences.
- Open the Main or Quick Setup tab.
- Find the Print Quality setting.
- Instead of High, select Standard.
- For draft documents, select Fast if this option is available.
- Click OK.
- Try printing again.
Fast mode is not always available
The available quality options depend on the selected paper type. Fast printing is unavailable for some types of photo paper.
Method 5: Check the Paper Type
If photo paper is selected in the driver, the printer will operate more slowly than when printing on standard office paper.
- Open the Canon printer properties.
- Find the Media Type setting.
- Make sure it matches the paper that is actually loaded.
For standard documents, select:
Plain Paper
Do not select photo paper for a standard office sheet. This will not improve text quality but may noticeably reduce printing speed.
Slow printing is normal when printing photos, especially if the following settings are used together:
- high print quality;
- photo paper;
- borderless printing;
- A3 paper size;
- color correction;
- a high-resolution image.
Method 6: Disable Duplex Printing for Testing
During automatic duplex printing, the printer pauses after printing the first side to allow the ink to dry. It then automatically pulls the sheet back into the printer.
This pause is normal.
To test single-sided printing speed:
- Open the Canon printer properties.
- Go to the Page Setup tab.
- Clear the Duplex Printing checkbox.
- Click OK.
- Print several pages.
If the pages print quickly without duplex printing, the delay was caused by automatic paper reversal and ink drying.
Do not pull out the sheet during the pause
During automatic duplex printing, the sheet temporarily remains in the output area. The printer will pull it back in automatically to print the second side.
Method 7: Reduce the Ink Drying Wait Time
The Canon driver allows the pause between pages to be increased. If this setting was previously set to a high value, the printer will pause for a long time after every sheet.
- Turn on the printer.
- Open Canon IJ Printer Assistant Tool.
- Select Custom Settings.
- Find the Ink Drying Wait Time slider.
- Move the slider closer to the left.
- Click Send.
- Confirm the change.
- Print several test pages.
Do not set the minimum wait time if:
- the ink smears;
- the next sheet touches a surface that is still wet;
- you are printing photos;
- thick paper is being used;
- a large amount of ink is applied to the sheet.
If prints begin to smear after the pause is reduced, move the slider slightly to the right.
Method 8: Disable Prevent Paper Abrasion
The Prevent Paper Abrasion setting increases the distance between the print head and paper. It should be enabled only when the printed surface is actually scratched or stained.
Keeping this mode enabled may reduce printing speed or quality.
- On the printer’s Home screen, tap Setup.
- Open Device settings.
- Select Print settings.
- Find Prevent paper abrasion.
- Select OFF.
- Try printing again.
This setting may also be available in Canon IJ Printer Assistant Tool under the custom settings.
If the paper begins rubbing against the print head after the option is disabled, enable it again and check whether the sheets are curled.
Method 9: Test a Simple Text Document
This test helps determine whether the delay is related to a specific file.
- Open Notepad.
- Enter several lines of plain text.
- Click File → Print.
- Select Canon TS9500 series.
- Select plain paper and standard print quality.
- Disable duplex printing.
- Start printing.
If the simple text prints quickly, the printer and connection are working. The original PDF file, photo, or application is causing the problem.
If even simple text takes a long time to transfer and print, check the print queue, driver, and connection.
Method 10: Simplify a Large PDF File
A complex PDF file may contain:
- very high-resolution photos;
- transparent layers;
- non-standard fonts;
- a large number of vector objects;
- several A3 pages;
- embedded color profiles;
- large scanned pages.
As a result, the computer may take a long time to create the print data.
Try the following:
- Close unnecessary applications.
- Save the PDF file to the computer’s internal drive.
- Do not print the file directly from a browser, email message, or cloud storage.
- Open the file in a PDF viewer.
- Print only the first page initially.
- If it prints successfully, send the document in small batches of 5–10 pages.
- If available, select standard rather than maximum print quality.
If the file opens slowly even when you are not printing it, the problem is related to the document itself or the computer’s performance.
Method 11: Enable Prevention of Print Data Loss for a Very Large File
Use this method if a large document takes a long time to process, stops partway through, or does not start printing at all.
- Open the Canon printer properties.
- Go to the Page Setup tab.
- Click Print Options….
- Find Prevention of Print Data Loss.
- Select On.
- Click OK.
- Try printing again.
This mode reduces the amount of print data created by the application, but it may reduce image quality in some cases.
After printing the problematic file, it is recommended that you select Off again.
Method 12: Check Free Space and Computer Usage
Windows first creates and saves temporary print data. If the computer has insufficient memory or disk space, preparing the job may take a long time.
- Close any browser with many open tabs.
- Close photo and video editing applications.
- Save all open documents.
- Restart the computer.
- Open File Explorer.
- Select This PC.
- Check the free space on the system drive.
If the system drive is almost full:
- remove unnecessary temporary files;
- empty the Recycle Bin;
- move large video files to another drive;
- restart the computer;
- try printing again.
Method 13: Clear the Print Queue
Old or damaged jobs may slow down the processing of new documents.
- Press Windows + R.
- Enter:
control printers
- Click OK.
- Right-click Canon TS9500 series.
- Select See what’s printing.
- Remove unnecessary and stuck print jobs.
- Close the print queue.
- Send a simple document to the printer again.
Method 14: Restart the Print Spooler
- Press Windows + R.
- Enter:
services.msc
- Click OK.
- Find the Print Spooler service.
- Right-click it.
- Select Restart.
- Close the window.
- Try printing again.
Method 15: Check the Wi-Fi Speed
With a weak signal, transferring a large image to the printer may take much longer than the printing itself.
- Check the Wi-Fi icon on the printer’s touchscreen.
- Move the printer closer to the router.
- Do not place it behind a metal cabinet or near large household appliances.
- Restart the printer.
- Restart the router.
- Wait until the network is fully restored.
- Disable the VPN on the computer.
- Try printing a simple document again.
The computer and printer must be connected to the same home or office network. Do not use a guest network.
Method 16: Use Wi-Fi Connection Assistant
The Canon utility can check the connection and repair an incorrect network port.
- Open the Start menu.
- Open the Canon Utilities folder.
- Start Wi-Fi Connection Assistant.
- If a User Account Control prompt appears, click Yes.
- Select Diagnose and Repair.
- Follow the application’s instructions.
- Confirm the port repair if the application offers to perform it.
- Try printing again.
If the application is not installed, its installation file may be named:
ndsu-win-1_70_0-ea34_2.exe
Method 17: Switch from Wireless Direct to a Standard Network
Wireless Direct creates a direct connection between the computer and printer without using a router. For regular printing of large documents, a standard home network or USB connection is more convenient.
If the computer is connected directly to a printer network with a name similar to:
DIRECT-XX-TS9500series
connect the printer to the router and install it as a standard network printer.
This is especially useful if you need Internet access and printing from several devices at the same time.
Method 18: Check the USB Connection
For a USB connection, use a direct connection.
- Turn off the printer.
- Disconnect the USB cable.
- Connect the cable directly to the computer.
- Do not use a USB hub, docking station, or extension cable.
- Turn on the printer.
- Try another USB port.
- If necessary, use another working USB Type-B cable.
The printer supports Hi-Speed USB. If it is connected through an old or slow intermediate device, transferring large files may take longer.
Method 19: Check the Installed Driver
A standard Windows driver may behave differently from the Canon MP Driver.
- Press Windows + R.
- Enter:
control printers
- Click OK.
- Right-click Canon TS9500 series.
- Select Printer properties.
- Open the Advanced tab.
- Check the name in the Driver field.
If Microsoft IPP Class Driver, a standard WSD driver, or another generic driver is being used, install the complete Canon package.
Download Canon TS9500 series MP Drivers Ver. 1.06
Method 20: Reinstall MP Drivers
Reinstallation is recommended if:
- Canon quality settings are missing from the printer properties;
- Canon IJ Printer Assistant Tool cannot be opened;
- printing became slow after a Windows update;
- several copies of the printer appeared;
- the driver repeatedly stops responding while creating a job;
- the other methods did not help.
- For a USB connection, disconnect the USB cable.
- Press Windows + R.
- Enter:
appwiz.cpl
- Click OK.
- Uninstall Canon TS9500 series MP Drivers.
- Restart the computer.
- Download MP Drivers Ver. 1.06.
- Run the installer as an administrator.
- Select the connection method you use.
For a USB connection, connect the cable only after the application displays the appropriate prompt.
When Pauses Are Normal
The printer may pause temporarily:
- before starting a large print job;
- while processing a high-resolution photo;
- when printing on photo paper;
- between sides during automatic duplex printing;
- to allow a large amount of ink to dry;
- during automatic print head cleaning;
- after being turned on or after a long period of inactivity;
- when switching between plain-paper and photo printing modes;
- during borderless printing;
- when printing on A3 paper.
Do not turn off the printer while the power lamp is flashing and no error message is displayed.
If the Printer Pauses After Every Page
Check the following in order:
- Disable Quiet Mode.
- Select standard print quality.
- Disable duplex printing.
- Reduce the ink drying wait time.
- Disable Prevent Paper Abrasion.
- Print simple text from Notepad.
- Check the print queue.
- For a network connection, check Wi-Fi.
If simple text on plain paper still prints with a long pause after every page, check copying speed without a computer.
When to Contact a Service Center
Contact a service center if:
- copying without a computer has also become significantly slower;
- the printer pauses on every line even in standard mode;
- cracking, grinding, or another unusual sound can be heard during pauses;
- the print head moves in jerks;
- a support code appears periodically on the screen;
- the printer overheats or produces an unusual smell;
- the pauses are accompanied by paper jams;
- resetting the settings and reinstalling the driver did not help;
- the same problem occurs over USB, Wi-Fi, and while copying.
