How to Update the Firmware of Canon TS9540, TS9540A, TS9550, TS9550A, and TS9551C in Windows

Last Updated on 18.07.2026 by DriverNew

A firmware update may fix certain printer errors, improve operating stability, and change how some support codes are handled. Firmware is installed directly in the printer’s memory and is not a Windows driver.

This guide applies to the following models:

  • Canon PIXMA TS9540;
  • Canon PIXMA TS9540A;
  • Canon PIXMA TS9541C;
  • Canon PIXMA TS9550;
  • Canon PIXMA TS9550A;
  • Canon PIXMA TS9551C;
  • Canon PIXMA TS9551CA.

Very important: two different firmware files are available for this series

Models without the letter A use the TS9500 series Ver. 1.110 package.

Models with the letter A or the CA suffix use the TS9500a series Ver. 4.032 package.

Do not run a file intended for the other group. Similar model names do not mean that their firmware files are interchangeable.

Which File Is Suitable for Your Model

Printer modelFirmware familyVersion and file name
Canon PIXMA TS9540TS9500 seriesVer. 1.110
fuu_-win-ts9500-1110-ea7.exe
Canon PIXMA TS9541CTS9500 seriesVer. 1.110
fuu_-win-ts9500-1110-ea7.exe
Canon PIXMA TS9550TS9500 seriesVer. 1.110
fuu_-win-ts9500-1110-ea7.exe
Canon PIXMA TS9551CTS9500 seriesVer. 1.110
fuu_-win-ts9500-1110-ea7.exe
Canon PIXMA TS9540ATS9500a seriesVer. 4.032
fuu_-win-ts9500a-4032-ea7.exe
Canon PIXMA TS9550ATS9500a seriesVer. 4.032
fuu_-win-ts9500a-4032-ea7.exe
Canon PIXMA TS9551CATS9500a seriesVer. 4.032
fuu_-win-ts9500a-4032-ea7.exe

The main difference can be identified from the full model name:

  • TS9550 and TS9551C belong to the standard TS9500 family;
  • TS9550A and TS9551CA belong to the TS9500a family.

The letter A at the end of the model name is important. For example, TS9550 and TS9550A use different update packages.

How to Confirm the Exact Model Name

Do not select the file based only on the printer’s appearance. Check the full model name using one of the following methods.

Method 1: Check the Printer Body

The model name is usually printed on the front of the printer. Check for the letter A after the number and for the letter A in the CA suffix.

Method 2: Check in Windows

  1. Open the Start menu.
  2. Click Settings.
  3. Open Bluetooth & devices.
  4. Select Printers & scanners.
  5. Open the installed Canon printer.
  6. Check its name.

Method 3: Check the Factory Label

Turn off the printer and find the label containing the model name and serial number. It may be located on the back or bottom of the device.

Do not confuse the model name with the generic driver name Canon TS9500 series. The driver may display a generic name even when the actual model has the letter A.

Do You Need to Update the Firmware?

An update is recommended if:

  • a newer version is available on the Canon support page;
  • the printer displays a notification about new firmware;
  • Canon recommends the update to resolve a specific error;
  • the device periodically displays a support code addressed by the new version;
  • the update is required before contacting technical support.

For TS9500 firmware Ver. 1.110, Canon states that handling of support code 5100 has been improved.

Do not update the firmware unnecessarily if:

  • the printer is unstable because of a damaged power cord;
  • power outages occur regularly;
  • the USB connection disconnects intermittently;
  • a file for another model is selected on the computer;
  • the printer has a mechanical fault;
  • an error on the screen prevents the device from entering the ready state.

How to Check the Current Firmware Version

  1. Turn on the printer.
  2. Wait for the Home screen to appear.
  3. Tap the Hint icon or the information icon.
  4. Open System information.
  5. Find Current version.

On some menu versions, you can check the firmware as follows:

  1. Tap Setup.
  2. Open Device settings.
  3. Select Firmware update.
  4. Tap Check current version.

Write down the version number before starting the update.

If the version is the same

If the same or a newer version is already installed on the printer, another update is usually unnecessary. The program may report that the update cannot be performed or is not required.

Method 1: Update the Firmware from the Printer’s Screen

This is the easiest and safest method. The printer connects to the Canon server and downloads the correct file for its model.

The printer must be connected to the Internet through Wi-Fi or Ethernet.

Step 1: Check the Connection

  1. Make sure the printer is turned on.
  2. Check the network icon on the touchscreen.
  3. Make sure the printer is connected to your home or office router.
  4. Do not use Wireless Direct.
  5. Make sure network printing works.

An online update is unavailable if both Wi-Fi and the wired network are disabled.

Step 2: Search for an Update

  1. On the Home screen, tap the Setup icon.
  2. Select Device settings.
  3. Select Firmware update.
  4. Tap Install update.
  5. Read the message on the screen.
  6. Select Yes.
  7. After the second warning, select Start update.

Step 3: Wait for the Update to Finish

During the update:

  • do not turn off the printer;
  • do not unplug the power cord;
  • do not restart the router;
  • do not send print jobs;
  • do not open the covers;
  • do not press other buttons on the operation panel.

After a successful update, the printer may turn off and on again automatically. This is a normal part of the process.

  1. Wait for the Home screen to appear.
  2. Read the final message.
  3. Tap OK.
  4. Check the current firmware version again.

If the Printer Reports “Cannot connect to the server”

Perform the following steps:

  1. Tap OK.
  2. Check the Wi-Fi or Ethernet icon.
  3. Turn off the printer.
  4. Restart the router.
  5. Wait for the Internet connection to be restored.
  6. Turn on the printer.
  7. Wait approximately one minute.
  8. Check for the update again.

If the error persists:

  • make sure the printer is not connected through Wireless Direct;
  • check that the date and time are correct;
  • disable access filtering on the router;
  • check the DNS settings;
  • try updating again later;
  • use the USB updater on a computer.

Method 2: Update the Firmware Through Windows and USB

Use this method if an online update is unavailable or if Canon provides a separate Firmware Updater file.

The computer-based updater updates the printer only through USB. A Wi-Fi connection between the printer and computer is not sufficient for this method.

If the name does not match your model group, do not run the file.

What to Prepare Before Updating Through a Computer

  • a working USB Type-B cable;
  • a Windows computer;
  • an account with administrator privileges;
  • a stable power supply for the printer;
  • a completely downloaded update file;
  • several minutes during which the printer and computer will not be used.

If you are using a laptop:

  1. Connect the charger.
  2. Make sure the battery is not discharged.
  3. Temporarily disable automatic sleep mode.
  4. Do not close the laptop lid during the update.

How to Update the Firmware via USB

Step 1: Connect the Printer

  1. Turn on the printer.
  2. Wait for the Home screen to appear.
  3. Close IJ Scan Utility, Canon PRINT, and other Canon applications.
  4. Remove all jobs from the print queue.
  5. Connect the USB cable to the port on the back of the printer.
  6. Connect the other end directly to a USB port on the computer.

Do not use:

  • a USB hub;
  • a docking station;
  • a USB extension cable;
  • a USB port on a monitor or keyboard;
  • an unreliable adapter.

Step 2: Run the Downloaded File

  1. Open the Downloads folder.
  2. Check the file name again.
  3. Right-click the file.
  4. Select Run as administrator. In Windows 11, you may first need to click Show more options.
  5. If a User Account Control prompt appears, click Yes.

The downloaded EXE file first extracts its contents into a separate folder.

For the standard series, a folder with a name similar to the following will be created:

fuu_-win-ts9500-1110-ea7

For models with the letter A:

fuu_-win-ts9500a-4032-ea7

Step 3: Open the Instructions Included in the Package

The extracted folder contains a How To folder with Canon’s official instructions.

  1. Open the How To folder.
  2. Open the folder for the required language.
  3. Open the following file:
    fut_upgrade.html
  4. Leave the instructions open in the browser.

Instructions in your preferred language may be unavailable. In that case, use the English version.

Step 4: Start the Update Program

  1. Return to the main extracted folder.
  2. Run Printer Update.exe.
  3. If a User Account Control prompt appears, click Yes.
  4. Wait for the program to detect the printer.
  5. Select Canon TS9500 Series if several devices are listed.
  6. Check the current and proposed versions.
  7. Continue the update by following the messages displayed by the program.

The button names may be in English. The program usually asks you to check the connection, select the printer, and start the update.

Step 5: Wait for the Update to Finish

After the update starts:

  • do not turn off the printer;
  • do not disconnect the USB cable;
  • do not turn off the computer;
  • do not allow the computer to enter sleep mode;
  • do not start printing or scanning;
  • do not close the update program;
  • do not press the printer’s power button.

The indicator lamps may flash, and the printer screen may change temporarily. This does not indicate a malfunction.

  1. Wait for the successful completion message.
  2. Close the update program.
  3. Wait for the printer to restart completely.
  4. Check the current version on the touchscreen.

If the Update Program Cannot Detect the Printer

Perform the following steps:

  1. Close Firmware Updater.
  2. Make sure the printer is turned on and ready.
  3. Check whether a support code is displayed on the touchscreen.
  4. Disconnect the USB cable.
  5. Connect the cable directly to another USB port on the computer.
  6. Do not use a hub or docking station.
  7. Try another working USB Type-B cable.
  8. Restart the computer.
  9. Run Firmware Updater as an administrator again.

If Windows does not respond to the USB connection at all, resolve the printer detection problem first. A firmware update cannot be performed over an unstable USB connection.

If the Printer Is Connected Only via Wi-Fi

Firmware Updater still requires a temporary USB connection.

  1. Do not remove the existing Wi-Fi connection.
  2. Connect a USB cable between the printer and computer.
  3. Wait for Windows to detect the device.
  4. Run Firmware Updater.
  5. After the update is complete, disconnect the USB cable.
  6. Check Wi-Fi printing.

A firmware update usually does not require removing the network printer from Windows.

If a Message Says That the Update Is Not Required

This may mean:

  • the same version is already installed on the printer;
  • a newer version is installed;
  • the package is not intended for this model variant;
  • the program could not identify the device correctly.

Check:

  1. the full model name;
  2. whether the name contains the letter A or the CA suffix;
  3. the current firmware version;
  4. the downloaded file name;
  5. the USB connection.

Do not attempt to force the firmware installation if the program reports an incompatibility.

If the Wrong File Was Downloaded

If the update has not started:

  1. Close the program.
  2. Delete the incorrect EXE file.
  3. Delete the extracted folder created by that file.
  4. Check the model name.
  5. Download the correct package.

If the program detected the incompatibility before firmware writing began, the printer usually remains unchanged.

If an update with the wrong file has already started, do not turn off the power or disconnect the cable. Wait for the program to finish or display an error. If an error appears, contact a Canon service center.

If the Update Stops

Do not turn off the printer immediately. Wait for the program to display a final message.

If the progress does not change for a long time:

  1. Do not disconnect the USB cable.
  2. Do not end the program through Task Manager.
  3. Check whether a separate confirmation window has appeared.
  4. Check the printer’s touchscreen.
  5. Follow the instructions displayed by Firmware Updater.

If the program reports a communication error:

  1. Write down the error message and code.
  2. Close the program only after it allows you to do so.
  3. Restart the printer and computer.
  4. Connect the printer using another USB cable.
  5. Repeat the update.

If the Power Goes Out During the Update

Do not press the power button repeatedly.

  1. Restore the power supply.
  2. Connect the printer directly to an electrical outlet.
  3. Press the power button once.
  4. Wait several minutes.

If the printer turns on and displays the Home screen:

  1. Check the current firmware version.
  2. Test copying without a computer.
  3. If necessary, repeat the update using the correct file.

If the printer does not turn on, the screen remains blank, or the device does not exit update mode, contact a service center.

What to Check After the Update

  1. Open the system information and check the version.
  2. Check the Wi-Fi or Ethernet connection.
  3. Make one copy without using the computer.
  4. Print a test page from Windows.
  5. Start IJ Scan Utility and test scanning.
  6. Make sure no support code is displayed on the touchscreen.

If Windows shows the printer as inactive after the update:

  1. Turn the printer off and on.
  2. Restart the computer.
  3. For a network connection, wait for Wi-Fi to reconnect.
  4. Open Printers & scanners.
  5. Select the correct Canon TS9500 series entry.
  6. Print a test page.

Firmware and Drivers Are Different Updates

The firmware file:

  • updates the software inside the printer;
  • does not install the printer driver;
  • does not install ScanGear;
  • does not install IJ Scan Utility;
  • does not repair a damaged Windows print queue.

The MP Drivers package:

  • is installed in Windows;
  • adds the printer driver;
  • adds the scanner driver;
  • installs IJ Scan Utility;
  • does not replace the firmware inside the device.

If the printer cannot be installed in Windows, updating the firmware will not always resolve the problem. First, check USB, Wi-Fi, the print queue, and MP Drivers.

When a Firmware Update Will Not Help

Firmware will not resolve:

  • a paper jam;
  • worn paper feed rollers;
  • clogged nozzles;
  • empty ink tanks;
  • a damaged USB cable;
  • a faulty USB port;
  • a Windows driver installation error;
  • an incorrect network port;
  • mechanical damage to the print head;
  • a scanning problem caused by missing ScanGear.

When to Contact a Service Center

Contact a service center if:

  • the printer does not turn on after an interrupted update;
  • the screen remains blank;
  • the device restarts continuously;
  • Firmware Updater reports damaged firmware;
  • the update stops at the same stage every time;
  • the printer is not detected via USB on several computers;
  • a permanent support code appears after the update;
  • a file intended for another model was started;
  • power was lost while the firmware was being written.

Quick Update Procedure

  1. Confirm the full model name.
  2. Check for the letter A or the CA suffix.
  3. Check the current firmware version.
  4. Whenever possible, update the printer through its touchscreen.
  5. When updating through a computer, download a file only for your model group.
