Canon TS9540, TS9550, and TS9551C: Duplex Printing or Borderless Printing Does Not Work

In the Canon TS9500 Series driver, the duplex printing option may be unavailable, or a photo may print with white borders even though borderless printing is selected. Sometimes the printer asks the user to turn the paper over manually even though automatic two-sided printing is expected.

This guide applies to the following models:

  • Canon PIXMA TS9540;
  • Canon PIXMA TS9540A;
  • Canon PIXMA TS9541C;
  • Canon PIXMA TS9550;
  • Canon PIXMA TS9550A;
  • Canon PIXMA TS9551C;
  • Canon PIXMA TS9551CA.

All the models listed above belong to the Canon TS9500 series and use the same basic duplex and borderless printing settings in Windows.

Duplex printing and borderless printing cannot be used at the same time

If Borderless is selected in the driver, the duplex printing option becomes unavailable. To print on both sides, use standard printing with margins.

When Automatic Duplex Printing Is Available

Automatic duplex printing is not supported with every combination of settings.

The main supported paper sizes are:

  • A4;
  • A5;
  • B5;
  • Letter.

Automatic duplex printing normally requires:

  • Plain Paper as the media type;
  • a supported paper size;
  • standard printing with margins;
  • a standard page layout.

Automatic duplex printing is unavailable:

  • for A3 paper;
  • for photo paper;
  • for envelopes;
  • with borderless printing;
  • with poster printing;
  • for certain special paper types;
  • when an unsupported paper size is used;
  • if a standard Windows driver is installed instead of the complete Canon driver.

Why the Duplex Printing Option Is Unavailable

The option may be grayed out or missing for the following reasons:

  • Borderless is selected;
  • A3, Legal, or another unsupported paper size is selected;
  • photo paper is selected as the media type;
  • poster printing is selected;
  • the document is being sent through a standard Microsoft IPP or WSD driver;
  • the application uses its own simplified print window;
  • an old copy of the printer is selected;
  • the application settings do not match the Canon driver settings.

Method 1: Configure Automatic Duplex Printing

Step 1: Load the Paper

  1. Use flat A4 plain paper.
  2. Pull the front cassette completely out.
  3. Load the paper with the print side facing down.
  4. Move the paper guides against the edges of the stack.
  5. Insert the cassette back into the printer.
  6. On the touchscreen, select A4 as the paper size.
  7. For the paper type, select Plain paper.
  8. Confirm the settings.

Step 2: Open the Driver Settings

  1. Open the document.
  2. Click File → Print.
  3. Select Canon TS9500 series.
  4. Click Printer properties, Settings, or Preferences.

The button name depends on the application from which you are printing.

Step 3: Enable Duplex Printing

  1. Open the Page Setup tab.
  2. For the page size, select A4.
  3. Make sure Borderless is not selected in the page layout settings.
  4. Select the Duplex Printing checkbox.
  5. Select the Automatic checkbox.
  6. Select the stapling side.

For a standard document in portrait orientation, long-side binding is normally used.

For a calendar or a document whose pages are turned upward, short-side binding may be required.

  1. If necessary, click Specify Margin… and set the binding margin width.
  2. Click OK.
  3. Start printing.

After the first side is printed, the printer will pause temporarily to allow the ink to dry. The sheet will then be pulled back into the printer automatically, and the other side will be printed.

Do not pull out the sheet during the pause

The pause between printing the first and second sides is normal. The printer is waiting for the ink to dry. If you pull out the sheet, duplex printing will be interrupted.

If the Text on the Second Side Is Upside Down

The wrong stapling side is selected.

  1. Open the Canon printer properties.
  2. Go to the Page Setup tab.
  3. Check the document orientation.
  4. Find the stapling side setting.
  5. For portrait orientation, try long-side binding.
  6. For landscape orientation, check the print preview.
  7. Print two test pages.

Before printing a large document, test the result using two pages.

If the Content Becomes Smaller During Duplex Printing

When printing automatically on both sides, the available printable area may be slightly reduced.

The driver may offer two options:

  • print at the normal size even if some content is positioned closer to the edge;
  • slightly reduce the content so that it fits completely within the printable area.

To change the setting:

  1. Open the Page Setup tab.
  2. Enable automatic duplex printing.
  3. Click Print Area Setup….
  4. Select printing without reduction or printing with slight reduction.
  5. Click OK.

If important text is positioned near the edge of the document, slight reduction is the safer option.

How to Perform Duplex Printing Manually

Manual mode is used if automatic paper reversal is unavailable or if the user wants to control the paper position.

  1. Open the Canon printer properties.
  2. Go to the Page Setup tab.
  3. Select the Duplex Printing checkbox.
  4. Clear the Automatic checkbox.
  5. Select the stapling side.
  6. Click OK.
  7. Start printing.

The first sides of the sheets will be printed first. The application will then display instructions for reloading the paper.

  1. Wait until the ink is completely dry.
  2. Without changing the order of the sheets, reload the paper as shown in the application message.
  3. Click Start Printing.

The correct reloading direction depends on the paper source, document orientation, and selected stapling side. Follow the diagram displayed by the driver.

Duplex Printing on A3 Paper

Automatic A3 duplex printing is not supported by Canon TS9500 Series printers.

To print an A3 document on both sides:

  1. Load A3 paper in the rear tray.
  2. Select A3 in the application and Canon driver.
  3. Print the odd-numbered pages.
  4. Wait until the ink is completely dry.
  5. Turn the stack over correctly.
  6. Load the paper in the rear tray again.
  7. Print the even-numbered pages.

Before printing the entire document, perform a test using two sheets of plain paper. This will help you determine the correct reloading direction.

Duplex Printing in Microsoft Word

  1. Open the document in Microsoft Word.
  2. Click File → Print.
  3. Select Canon TS9500 series.
  4. Open Printer Properties.
  5. Select A4 plain paper.
  6. Enable automatic duplex printing.
  7. Click OK.

The following option may also be available in the main Word print window:

Print on Both Sides

If duplex printing is already enabled in the Canon properties, do not additionally select a conflicting manual duplex option in Word.

Duplex Printing from a PDF File

  1. Open the PDF file.
  2. Click File → Print.
  3. Select Canon TS9500 series.
  4. Click Properties.
  5. Select A4 and plain paper.
  6. Enable automatic duplex printing.
  7. Check the stapling side.
  8. Click OK.
  9. Start printing.

If the PDF viewer also offers its own duplex printing option, make sure it does not enable manual paper reversal instead of automatic duplex printing.

Why the Driver Does Not Have a Duplex Printing Option

First, check whether the complete Canon driver is installed.

  1. Press Windows + R.
  2. Enter: 
    control printers
  3. Click OK.
  4. Right-click Canon TS9500 series.
  5. Select Printer properties.
  6. Open the Advanced tab.
  7. Check the name in the Driver field.

If Microsoft IPP Class Driver, a standard WSD driver, or another generic driver name is shown, some Canon features may be unavailable.

For a USB installation, do not connect the cable until the installer asks you to do so.

How to Enable Borderless Printing

In borderless mode, the driver slightly enlarges the image. The image extends beyond the edges of the sheet, eliminating the white border.

Step 1: Load Suitable Paper

  1. Use photo paper or another media type that supports borderless printing.
  2. Load the paper in the rear tray.
  3. The print side must face up.
  4. Move the paper guides against the edges of the paper.
  5. Specify the actual paper size on the touchscreen.
  6. Select the correct paper type.

To print an A3 photo without borders, load A3 paper in the rear tray.

Step 2: Configure the Driver

  1. Open the photo.
  2. Click File → Print.
  3. Select Canon TS9500 series.
  4. Open the printer properties.
  5. Select the exact type of photo paper that is loaded.
  6. Open the Page Setup tab.
  7. Under page layout, select Borderless.
  8. If a message appears asking you to change the media type, select suitable paper.
  9. Check the page size.
  10. Click OK.
  11. Start printing.

After borderless mode is selected, the driver displays only the paper sizes for which this feature is available.

Why the Borderless Option Is Unavailable

Possible causes:

  • an unsupported paper size is selected;
  • a custom paper size is being used;
  • an envelope is selected;
  • high-resolution paper that does not support this mode is selected;
  • T-Shirt Transfers are selected;
  • duplex printing is enabled;
  • poster or booklet printing is enabled;
  • a standard Windows driver is being used;
  • the application limits the available sizes;
  • the document size does not match the paper size.

If White Borders Remain After Borderless Mode Is Enabled

  1. Make sure Borderless is selected in the Canon properties.
  2. Check the page size in the application.
  3. Check the size in the driver.
  4. Check the paper size registered on the printer’s screen.
  5. Make sure the photo fills the entire page.
  6. Disable application settings that add margins.
  7. Check the print preview.

If the source image has a different aspect ratio, the application may leave white bands to avoid cropping the photo.

In this case, select a fill-page option or crop the image to match the paper’s aspect ratio before printing.

Why the Photo Is Cropped During Borderless Printing

Slight cropping is a normal feature of borderless printing. The driver enlarges the image so that it extends slightly beyond the edges of the sheet.

To reduce cropping:

  1. Open the printer properties.
  2. Select Borderless.
  3. Find the Amount of Extension setting.
  4. Move the slider slightly to the left.
  5. Check the print preview.
  6. Print a test photo.

Reducing the amount of extension preserves more of the image, but thin white lines may appear along the edges.

If the Paper Edges Become Stained with Ink

Excessive image extension may cause ink to be applied beyond the edge of the sheet.

  1. Open the Canon properties.
  2. Go to the borderless printing settings.
  3. Reduce the Amount of Extension.
  4. Check whether the paper is curled.
  5. Load photo paper one sheet at a time.
  6. After printing, do not stack the sheets until the ink is dry.

If the back of the paper is already stained, perform bottom plate cleaning through the printer’s maintenance menu.

Borderless Printing on Plain Paper

The driver may allow test borderless printing on plain paper, but Canon does not recommend this option for the final result.

Possible disadvantages:

  • reduced quality near the top and bottom edges;
  • excessive ink absorption;
  • wavy paper;
  • stained paper edges;
  • faded colors;
  • long drying time.

For borderless photos, it is better to use suitable photo paper.

Borderless Printing on A3 Paper

  1. Load A3 photo paper in the rear tray.
  2. Register A3 as the paper size on the printer’s screen.
  3. Select the exact photo paper type.
  4. Set the page size to A3 in the application.
  5. Select A3 in the Canon properties.
  6. Select Borderless.
  7. Check the print preview.
  8. Start printing.

Automatic duplex printing is unavailable for borderless A3 printing.

If the Application Does Not Have a Borderless Paper Size

Some applications display separate paper size options, for example:

A4
A4 Borderless

In other applications, you select the standard A4 or A3 size and enable borderless mode separately in the Canon driver properties.

If the application uses a simplified system print window:

  1. Find Print using system dialog….
  2. Select Canon TS9500 series.
  3. Open Preferences or Printer properties.
  4. Enable borderless printing in the Canon driver.

If the Features Disappeared After a Windows Update

Windows may have replaced the Canon driver with a standard IPP driver.

  1. Open Settings → Printers & scanners.
  2. Check whether several Canon TS9500 series copies are present.
  3. Print a test page from each entry.
  4. Keep the device that uses the Canon driver.
  5. Remove non-working copies that use a generic driver.
  6. If necessary, reinstall MP Drivers Ver. 1.06.

When the Feature Is Unavailable Due to the Printer’s Design

Changing the driver settings will not help if the user is trying to:

  • enable automatic A3 duplex printing;
  • use duplex and borderless printing at the same time;
  • print automatically on both sides of photo paper;
  • enable borderless printing for an envelope;
  • use borderless printing with an unsupported custom paper size;
  • reverse the paper automatically in a mode that supports only manual duplex printing.

Quick Duplex Printing Check

  1. Plain paper is being used.
  2. A4, A5, B5, or Letter is selected.
  3. Borderless mode is disabled.
  4. Poster printing is disabled.
  5. The complete Canon driver is installed.
  6. Duplex printing is enabled.
  7. The Automatic checkbox is selected for automatic paper reversal.
  8. The correct stapling side is selected.
  9. The sheet is not removed manually during the pause.

Quick Borderless Printing Check

  1. A supported paper size is being used.
  2. The correct photo paper type is selected.
  3. The paper is loaded with the print side facing up.
  4. Borderless is selected in the driver.
  5. Duplex printing is disabled.
  6. The size selected in the application matches the paper size.
  7. The image fills the entire page.
  8. The amount of extension is set to a suitable value.
  9. The Canon driver is installed.
