A Canon TS9500 Series printer may fail to pick up paper, feed several sheets at once, make the sound of rollers turning without starting to print, or display support code 1000, 1003, 1300, 1303, 1304, or 1313.
This guide applies to the following models:
- Canon PIXMA TS9540;
- Canon PIXMA TS9540A;
- Canon PIXMA TS9541C;
- Canon PIXMA TS9550;
- Canon PIXMA TS9550A;
- Canon PIXMA TS9551C;
- Canon PIXMA TS9551CA.
All the models listed above belong to the Canon TS9500 series and use the rear tray, front cassette, and the same paper feed roller cleaning procedures.
First, identify the paper source
The Rear Tray is located at the top and rear of the printer. It can be used for plain paper, photo paper, envelopes, and large-format paper.
The Cassette slides out from the lower front of the printer. It can hold only A4, B5, A5, or Letter-sized plain paper.
What the Main Support Codes Mean
- 1000 — there is no paper in the rear tray, or the paper is loaded incorrectly;
- 1003 — there is no paper in the cassette, or the paper is loaded incorrectly;
- 1300 — paper fed from the rear tray is jammed;
- 1303 — paper is jammed while being fed from the cassette;
- 1304 — a paper jam occurred during automatic duplex printing;
- 1313 — the printer pulled an already printed sheet back into the printer, and the paper became jammed.
If a different code is displayed, write it down first. The paper removal procedure depends on where the jam occurred.
Method 1: Load Paper Correctly in the Rear Tray
Use this method for support code 1000, or if the printer attempts to pick up a sheet from the rear tray but the paper does not move.
Step 1: Prepare the Paper
- Remove the paper from the rear tray.
- Check the sheets for curled corners, folds, or damage.
- Align the edges of the stack on a flat surface.
- If any sheets are stuck together, separate them carefully.
- For testing, load one to five sheets first.
Step 2: Open the Rear Tray
- Open the rear tray cover.
- Raise the paper support.
- Open the feed slot cover.
- Slide the left and right paper guides apart.
Step 3: Load the Sheets
- Load the paper in portrait orientation, with the short edge facing forward.
- The print side must face up.
- Place the stack in the center of the rear tray.
- Move the paper guides against the left and right edges of the paper.
- The guides should lightly touch the sheets without bending them.
- Do not load paper above the load limit mark.
- Slowly close the feed slot cover.
The feed slot cover must be closed
If this cover remains open, the printer cannot feed paper from the rear tray and may display support code 1000.
Step 4: Register the Paper
After the cover is closed, a paper settings confirmation screen will appear on the touchscreen.
- Check the displayed paper size.
- Check the paper type.
- If the settings match the loaded paper, select Yes.
- If the settings do not match, select Change.
- Specify the correct paper size and type.
- Open the operation panel and fully extend the paper output tray.
After completing these steps, select OK on the support code 1000 screen.
Method 2: Load Paper Correctly in the Cassette
Use this method for support code 1003.
The cassette can hold only plain paper in the following sizes:
- A4;
- B5;
- A5;
- Letter.
Photo paper, envelopes, labels, and A3 paper must be loaded in the rear tray.
Step 1: Remove the Cassette
- Pull the cassette completely out of the printer.
- Remove the old paper.
- Slide the front and side paper guides apart.
Step 2: Load the Paper
- Align the edges of the stack.
- Load the paper with the short edge facing forward.
- The print side must face down.
- Place the stack in the center of the cassette.
- Move the front paper guide to the mark for the required paper size.
- Move the right paper guide against the edge of the stack.
- Do not press the guide too tightly against the paper.
- Make sure the paper is below the load limit tabs.
- Insert the cassette fully into the printer.
Step 3: Confirm the Paper Size
- Check the paper size on the touchscreen.
- If it is correct, select Yes.
- If the size does not match, select Change.
- Specify the actual paper size.
- Open the operation panel.
- Fully extend the paper output tray.
After that, select OK on the support code 1003 screen.
Method 3: Check the Paper Source in Windows
Sometimes the paper is loaded correctly, but the driver tries to use another tray.
- Open the document.
- Click File → Print.
- Select Canon TS9500 series.
- Click Printer properties, Settings, or Preferences.
- Open the Quick Setup or Main tab.
- Find the Paper Source setting.
Select:
- Rear Tray — if the paper is loaded at the top and rear of the printer;
- Cassette — if plain paper is loaded in the lower cassette;
- Automatically Select — if the correct paper size and type are registered on the printer.
- Check the Media Type setting.
- Check the paper size.
- Click OK.
- Send the document to the printer again.
If automatic selection does not work correctly, temporarily select the rear tray or cassette manually.
Method 4: Check the Paper
Paper feeding may be affected by the condition or type of the sheets.
Do not use:
- severely curled sheets;
- wrinkled paper;
- torn sheets;
- damp paper;
- sheets with curled corners;
- paper with paper clips, staples, or adhesive items attached;
- paper that is too thick or too thin;
- a sheet that has already been printed on with another inkjet printer if the ink is not completely dry.
For testing, use several new sheets of standard A4 office paper.
If the new paper feeds correctly, the printer is probably working properly. The old or unsuitable paper caused the problem.
Method 5: Reduce the Number of Sheets
The printer may have difficulty feeding paper when the tray is filled to its maximum capacity, especially in high or low humidity.
- Remove approximately half of the stack.
- Align the remaining sheets.
- Load them again.
- Move the paper guides against the edges.
- Try printing again.
If a small stack feeds correctly, do not fill the tray to its maximum capacity when using this paper.
Method 6: Check the Rear Tray for Foreign Objects
A paper clip, scrap of paper, pencil, or another small object may fall into an open rear tray.
- Turn off the printer using the power button.
- Wait until the power lamp turns off.
- Unplug the power cord from the electrical outlet.
- Remove the paper from the rear tray.
- Open the feed slot cover.
- Inspect the inside of the tray under good lighting.
- Carefully remove any visible foreign object.
Do not push the object farther inside. Do not use a knife, screwdriver, or other sharp metal tool.
If the object has fallen deep inside and cannot be removed safely, contact a service center.
Method 7: Clean the Paper Feed Rollers
Cleaning may help if the rollers turn but cannot pick up the paper.
Do not perform cleaning unless necessary
Cleaning gradually wears the rollers. First, check how the paper is loaded, the position of the guides, the selected paper source, and whether there are any foreign objects.
Prepare three new sheets of A4 or Letter-sized plain paper.
Step 1: Clean the Rollers Without Paper
- Turn on the printer.
- On the Home screen, select Setup.
- Open Maintenance.
- Select Roller cleaning.
- On the confirmation screen, select Yes.
- Select the paper source:
- Rear Tray;
- Cassette.
- Remove all paper from the selected paper source.
- If the cassette is selected, insert the empty cassette back into the printer.
- Select OK.
The rollers will begin turning without paper. Do not touch them while they are operating.
Step 2: Complete Cleaning with Paper
- Wait until the rollers stop completely.
- Following the message on the screen, load three sheets of A4 or Letter-sized plain paper in the selected paper source.
- Open the operation panel.
- Extend the paper output tray.
- Select OK.
- Wait until all sheets are ejected.
- When the completion message appears, select OK.
Then load the paper again and test printing.
Method 8: Clean the Cassette Pad
Use this method if the cassette feeds two or more sheets at once.
Prepare a cotton swab and a small amount of clean water.
- Remove the cassette completely.
- Remove all paper from it.
- Lightly dampen the cotton swab with water.
- The swab should be damp, but water must not drip from it.
- Locate the paper feed pad inside the cassette.
- Wipe the pad from side to side.
- Wait until the surface is completely dry.
- Load the paper again.
- Insert the cassette into the printer.
- Confirm the paper settings on the touchscreen.
Do not use alcohol, acetone, paint thinner, or household cleaning products.
Method 9: What to Do for Support Code 1300
Support code 1300 means that paper fed from the rear tray is jammed.
If the Sheet Is Visible in the Paper Output Slot or Rear Tray
- Tap Stop on the touchscreen.
- Hold the paper with both hands.
- Slowly pull it out through the paper output slot or rear tray, whichever side allows the paper to move more easily.
- Do not pull the sheet suddenly.
- Check whether it has torn.
- Make sure no scraps remain inside.
- Load the paper again.
- Confirm the paper size and type.
- Select OK.
If the sheet does not move, do not pull it forcefully. In some cases, the printer may automatically eject the jammed paper after it is turned on again.
If you had to turn off the printer to remove the paper, the submitted print job will be canceled. Start printing again after clearing the jam.
Method 10: What to Do for Support Code 1303
Support code 1303 means that paper is jammed while being fed from the cassette.
- Tap Stop.
- Pull the cassette completely out.
- If the jammed sheet is visible in the paper feed area, hold it with both hands.
- Slowly remove the sheet.
- Check that no scraps remain inside.
- Remove and align the remaining paper.
- Load the stack with the print side facing down.
- Move the paper guides against the paper.
- Insert the cassette fully.
- Try printing again.
If the paper is not visible near the cassette, look for it inside the printer or at the rear.
Support Codes 1304 and 1313
Support code 1304 appears when a jam occurs during automatic duplex printing.
Support code 1313 appears if the printer pulls an already printed sheet back into the printer.
In these cases, check:
- the paper output slot;
- the cassette feed area;
- the inside of the printer;
- the rear cover and transport unit.
Before trying duplex printing again:
- Use flat plain paper.
- Do not use damp or severely curled sheets.
- Make sure the paper size matches the print job settings.
- Do not return a sheet to the cassette while the ink is still wet.
Method 11: Remove Paper from Inside the Printer
Use this method if the paper has torn or cannot be seen in the paper output slot, rear tray, or cassette feed area.
Do not touch the clear or white film inside the printer
Soiling or damaging this film may cause a printing malfunction.
- Tap Stop.
- Turn off the printer using the power button.
- Unplug the power cord.
- Open the scanning unit / cover.
- Inspect the area under the print head holder.
If the paper is under the holder:
- Hold the upper part of the print head holder.
- Slowly move it to the right or left to access the paper.
- Do not use force.
- Hold the sheet with both hands.
- Slowly pull it out at a slight angle.
- Check the left and right sides inside the printer.
- Remove all small scraps of paper.
- Close the scanning unit / cover.
- Reconnect the power cord and turn on the printer.
All print jobs in the queue may be canceled when the printer is turned off. Send the document to the printer again.
Method 12: Remove Paper from the Rear of the Printer
Use this method if the paper cannot be removed through the paper output slot or from inside the printer.
- Tap Stop.
- Turn off the printer.
- Turn the printer so that its rear side faces you.
- Open the rear tray cover.
- Raise the paper support.
- Remove the rear cover.
- Slowly remove any visible paper.
If the paper still cannot be removed:
- Remove the transport unit cover.
- Slowly remove the jammed sheet.
- Check that no scraps remain inside.
- Reinstall the transport unit cover securely.
- Reinstall the rear cover.
- Make sure both covers are locked completely.
If the rear cover or transport unit cover is installed incorrectly, paper may not feed even after the jam has been cleared.
If the Printer Picks Up Several Sheets
Perform the following steps:
- Remove the paper stack.
- Separate any sheets that are stuck together.
- Align the edges.
- Reduce the amount of paper.
- Do not mix sheets of different sizes and weights.
- Check the position of the paper guides.
- If the problem occurs when feeding from the cassette, clean the cassette pad.
- Clean the rollers for the selected paper source.
If two sheets are picked up only when old paper is used, replace it with new paper.
If the Rollers Turn but the Paper Does Not Move
Check:
- whether the feed slot cover is closed;
- whether the paper guides touch the edges of the paper;
- whether the load limit has been exceeded;
- whether the correct paper source is selected in Windows;
- whether there is a foreign object inside;
- whether the rollers are covered with paper dust;
- whether the rear cover and transport unit cover are installed correctly.
Then clean the rollers. If the rollers continue to slip after cleaning, they may be worn.
If the Paper Always Jams in the Same Place
Possible causes:
- a scrap from a previously jammed sheet remains inside;
- a paper guide is damaged or dirty;
- the rear cover is not installed securely;
- the paper is curled;
- an unsupported paper weight is being used;
- the paper feed roller is worn;
- a foreign object is inside the printer.
Test the printer using one new sheet of A4 plain paper. If it also jams in the same place, contact a service center.
If Paper Jams Occur Only During Duplex Printing
- Use plain paper in a supported size.
- Make sure the sheets are flat and dry.
- Reduce the amount of paper in the cassette.
- Check the paper guides.
- Clean the cassette rollers.
- Try printing the document on one side only.
If single-sided printing works but support code 1304 or 1313 appears every time the printer turns the sheet over, the duplex feed mechanism may be faulty.
When You Do Not Need to Reinstall the Driver
Reinstalling MP Drivers will not help if:
- the printer physically cannot pick up the paper;
- the rollers are slipping;
- a sheet is jammed inside;
- several sheets feed at once;
- a foreign object is inside;
- a paper jam also occurs when copying without a computer.
The driver needs to be checked only when the printer tries to use the wrong paper source.
When to Contact a Service Center
Contact a service center if:
- roller cleaning did not help;
- the rollers turn but do not touch the paper;
- the printer continuously picks up several sheets;
- the paper always jams in the same place;
- cracking or grinding sounds can be heard inside;
- the rear cover or transport unit cover is damaged;
- an object inside cannot be removed safely;
- a jam occurs even with one new A4 sheet;
- support code 1300, 1303, 1304, or 1313 remains after all paper has been removed;
- a torn sheet cannot be removed completely.
Quick Troubleshooting Procedure
- Write down the support code.
- Determine whether the rear tray or cassette is being used.
- Load the paper with the short edge facing forward.
- Check the print side.
