Canon TS9540, TS9550, and TS9551C Are Not Detected via USB in Windows 11 and Windows 10

Last Updated on 18.07.2026 by DriverNew

When a Canon TS9500 Series printer is connected via USB, the computer may not respond to the cable, may display the message “USB device not recognized”, or may create an “Unknown USB Device” entry in Device Manager. In some cases, Windows detects the printer, but the Canon installer continues to display a window asking you to connect the device.

This guide applies to the following models:

  • Canon PIXMA TS9540;
  • Canon PIXMA TS9540A;
  • Canon PIXMA TS9541C;
  • Canon PIXMA TS9550;
  • Canon PIXMA TS9550A;
  • Canon PIXMA TS9551C;
  • Canon PIXMA TS9551CA.

All the models listed above belong to the Canon TS9500 series and use the same MP Drivers Ver. 1.06 package.

The main rule for USB installation

Do not connect the USB cable before starting the installer. First, start MP Drivers, select a USB connection, and wait for the message asking you to connect the printer to the computer. Only then should you connect the cable and turn on the printer.

Why Windows Does Not Detect the Printer via USB

The most common causes are:

  • the cable is faulty or designed only for charging;
  • a USB hub, docking station, or adapter is being used;
  • the cable is too long;
  • the computer’s USB port is faulty;
  • a damaged entry from a previous installation remains in Windows;
  • the USB controller driver is not working correctly;
  • the installer was started without administrator privileges;
  • a previous MP Drivers installation ended with an error;
  • antivirus software blocked installer components;
  • the printer’s USB port is faulty.

Method 1: Check the Printer’s Power and Screen

  1. Disconnect the USB cable from the computer.
  2. Press the printer’s power button.
  3. Wait for the Home screen to appear.
  4. Check whether a support code or error message is displayed.
  5. If an error is displayed, resolve it before installing the driver.

The printer must turn on completely. The power lamp should not flash continuously.

If the printer does not turn on:

  1. Check the power cord.
  2. Connect the printer directly to an electrical outlet.
  3. Do not use a faulty extension cord.
  4. Disconnect the power cord from the printer for approximately two minutes.
  5. Reconnect the power cord and turn on the device.

Method 2: Connect the USB Cable Correctly

The printer requires a cable with a USB Type-B connector on the printer end.

USB Type-B is an almost square connector commonly used for printers and scanners.

  1. Turn off the printer.
  2. Disconnect the USB cable at both ends.
  3. Inspect the cable connectors.
  4. Check for bent contacts, damage, or severe bends.
  5. Connect the USB Type-B plug to the port on the back of the printer.
  6. Insert the plug fully, but do not use excessive force.
  7. Connect the other end of the cable directly to a USB port on the computer.
  8. Turn on the printer.

Canon recommends using a certified Hi-Speed USB cable no longer than approximately 3 meters.

Do not connect the printer through additional devices

For testing, connect the cable directly to the computer. Do not use a USB hub, a USB port on a monitor or keyboard, a docking station, or an external adapter.

Method 3: Try Another USB Port

  1. Leave the printer turned on.
  2. Disconnect the USB cable from the computer.
  3. Wait 10–15 seconds.
  4. Connect the cable to another USB port.
  5. Wait approximately one minute.

On a desktop computer, it is best to use a USB port on the back of the system unit. These ports are usually connected directly to the motherboard.

If the printer is detected only through one specific port, another USB port on the computer may be faulty.

Method 4: Check the USB Cable

Even if the cable looks undamaged, an internal data wire may be broken.

  1. Use another known working USB Type-B cable.
  2. Use a short cable without extension cables.
  3. Connect it directly to the computer.
  4. Turn on the printer.
  5. Check whether Windows plays the device connection sound.

If the printer is detected with another cable, replace the old cable.

Do not use a cable designed only for charging. It may supply power but cannot transfer data.

Method 5: Check the Printer in Device Manager

How to Open Device Manager

  1. Right-click the Start button.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Leave the window open.
  4. Disconnect the printer’s USB cable.
  5. Reconnect the cable.
  6. Check whether the device list changes.

Check the following sections:

  • Print queues;
  • Printers;
  • Imaging devices;
  • Universal Serial Bus controllers;
  • Other devices.

The device may appear as:

  • Canon TS9500 series;
  • USB Printing Support;
  • USB Composite Device;
  • Unknown USB Device;
  • Unknown device;
  • USB Device;
  • Unknown USB Device (Device Descriptor Request Failed).

Method 6: Remove the Unknown USB Device

Use this method if a yellow warning icon appears next to the device.

  1. Disconnect other unnecessary USB devices from the computer.
  2. In Device Manager, find the unknown device that appears when the printer is connected.
  3. Right-click it.
  4. Select Uninstall device.
  5. If a checkbox for removing the driver appears, do not select it for a system USB controller.
  6. Confirm that you want to uninstall the device.
  7. Disconnect the printer’s USB cable.
  8. Restart the computer.
  9. After Windows starts, do not connect the cable immediately.
  10. Run the Canon installer as an administrator.
  11. Connect the cable only after the installer displays a prompt.

Do not uninstall all USB controllers

Remove only the unknown device that appears when the printer is connected. Do not randomly uninstall USB root hubs or controllers for the keyboard, mouse, and other devices.

Method 7: Install MP Drivers in the Correct Order

Download the complete driver package:

  1. Connect the USB Type-B plug to the printer.
  2. Connect the other end directly to the computer.
  3. Turn on the printer.
  4. Wait several minutes.

Windows may display notifications about setting up a new device. Do not disconnect the cable or close the installer.

If the Installer Does Not Proceed Beyond the Connection Screen

If the printer is turned on and connected, but the installer continues waiting for the device:

  1. Without closing the installer, disconnect the USB cable from the computer.
  2. Wait 10 seconds.
  3. Connect the cable to another USB port.
  4. Wait approximately one minute.
  5. Check Device Manager.

If the device does not appear:

  • replace the USB cable;
  • restart the computer;
  • repeat the installation with the cable disconnected;
  • test the connection on another computer.

If the device appears in Device Manager with an error, remove the unknown device, restart Windows, and repeat the installation.

Method 8: Remove an Incomplete Driver Installation

If the installation was interrupted several times, old components may prevent a new installation.

The installer may not complete printer registration if the Windows printing service is stopped.

  1. Press Windows + R.
  2. Enter:
    services.msc
  3. Click OK.
  4. Find the Print Spooler service.
  5. Right-click it.
  6. Select Properties.
  7. For Startup type, select Automatic.
  8. If the service is stopped, click Start.
  9. Click Apply.
  10. Click OK.

Then repeat the MP Drivers installation.

Method 10: Check Bidirectional Communication

Canon recommends enabling bidirectional communication in the driver properties. Without it, Windows may not receive printer status information.

  1. Press Windows + R.
  2. Enter:
    control printers
  3. Click OK.
  4. Right-click Canon TS9500 series.
  5. Select Printer properties.
  6. Open the Ports tab.

  8. Click Apply.
  9. Click OK.

The setting name may vary slightly between different versions of Windows.

Method 11: Check the Printer’s USB Port in the Properties

  1. Open Printer properties.
  2. Go to the Ports tab.

For a USB connection, one of the following ports is normally selected:

USB001
USB002
USB003

Canon TS9500 series should be shown next to the selected port.

If a WSD port, TCP/IP port, or port for another printer is selected:

  1. Find the USB port associated with Canon TS9500 series.
  2. Select the checkbox next to it.
  3. Click Apply.
  4. Print a test page.

Do not select a random USB port if no Canon device is shown next to it.

Method 12: Update the USB Controller Drivers

If other USB devices also disconnect periodically, the problem may be related to the computer’s drivers.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Go to Windows Update.
  3. Click Check for updates.
  4. Install the available updates.
  5. Open Optional updates if this section is available.
  6. Check for USB, chipset, or motherboard driver updates.
  7. Restart the computer.

For a laptop, it is also recommended that you check the manufacturer’s website and install the latest motherboard, chipset, and USB controller drivers for the exact computer model.

Method 13: Disable USB Power Saving

Use this method if the printer is detected normally after the computer starts but disappears after sleep or a long period of inactivity.

  1. Open Device Manager.
  2. Expand Universal Serial Bus controllers.
  3. Open the properties of USB Root Hub.
  4. Go to the Power Management tab.
  5. Clear the Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power checkbox.
  6. Click OK.

Change this setting only for the USB hub through which the printer is connected. On some computers, the Power Management tab is unavailable.

Method 14: Test the Printer on Another Computer

This is one of the most useful tests when the message “USB device not recognized” appears.

  1. Use a known working USB cable.
  2. Connect the printer to another computer.
  3. Turn on the printer.
  4. Check whether the operating system responds to the connection.

Possible results:

  • the printer is detected on another computer — the problem is related to Windows, the USB port, or the drivers on the first computer;
  • the printer is not detected on another computer either — check the cable and the printer’s USB port;
  • everything works with another cable — replace the old cable;
  • the printer is detected, but MP Drivers cannot be installed — completely remove the old driver.

If Printing Works but the Scanner Is Not Detected

If Windows detects the printer and documents print successfully, the USB connection is already working. In this case, the problem is usually related to the ScanGear scanner driver or IJ Scan Utility rather than the cable.

Perform the following steps:

  1. Check whether IJ Scan Utility is available in the Start menu.
  2. Make sure Canon TS9500 series is selected.
  3. Restart the Windows Image Acquisition (WIA) service.
  4. If necessary, reinstall the complete MP Drivers package.

There is no need to replace the USB cable if printing through it works reliably.

If Windows Automatically Added the Printer Before the Driver Was Installed

Windows may automatically create the device immediately after the cable is connected. After this happens, the Canon installer may sometimes be unable to complete the setup correctly.

  1. Disconnect the USB cable.
  2. Remove Canon TS9500 series from Printers & scanners.
  3. Uninstall Canon TS9500 series MP Drivers through Programs and Features.
  4. Restart the computer.
  5. Do not connect the USB cable after Windows starts.
  6. Run the Canon installer as an administrator.
  7. Select a USB connection.
  8. Connect the cable only after the installer displays a message.

If “Device Descriptor Request Failed” Appears

This error means that Windows could not retrieve basic information from the connected USB device.

Perform the following steps in order:

  1. Turn off the printer.
  2. Disconnect the USB cable.
  3. Remove the unknown device in Device Manager.
  4. Restart the computer.
  5. Try another USB port.
  6. Try another cable.
  7. Connect the printer directly to the computer.
  8. Test the device on another computer.

If the error appears on several computers with several known working cables, the printer’s USB port or electronic board may be faulty.

If the Printer Disconnects Periodically

Check the following possible causes:

  • the USB plug is not inserted securely;
  • the cable is damaged;
  • a long cable or extension cable is being used;
  • the printer is connected through a USB hub;
  • Windows turns off the USB port to save power;
  • the computer’s USB port is faulty;
  • other high-power USB devices are overloading the hub.

For testing, leave only the keyboard, mouse, and printer connected.

Windows 11 ARM Laptops

Important information for computers with Snapdragon processors

The MP Drivers Ver. 1.06 package does not contain a separate ARM64 driver. Windows may detect the connected USB device, but the Canon installer may be unable to complete the driver installation.

If the USB device appears in Device Manager without a hardware error, but MP Drivers cannot be installed on Windows 11 ARM, repeatedly replacing the cable will usually not help. Use network printing or add the printer using the standard Windows tools.

When to Contact a Service Center

Contact a service center if:

  • the printer is not detected on several computers;
  • several known working USB cables have been tested;
  • the printer’s USB port is loose or damaged;
  • Windows continuously reports a device descriptor request failure;
  • the connection appears only when the cable is held in a specific position;
  • the USB port has visible mechanical damage;
  • there is an overheating smell coming from the printer or port;
  • the printer stopped being detected after a power surge;
  • the device is not detected even before the driver is installed.

If the printer is not detected at the hardware level, reinstalling MP Drivers, Windows, or IJ Scan Utility will not resolve the problem.

Quick Troubleshooting Procedure

  1. Check whether the printer turns on.
  2. Resolve any messages displayed on the touchscreen.
  3. Connect the USB cable directly to the computer.
  4. Try another USB port.
  5. Try another USB Type-B cable.
  6. Check the device in Device Manager.
  7. Remove the unknown USB device with an error.
  8. Restart the computer.
  9. Run MP Drivers as an administrator.
  10. Connect the cable only after the installer displays a prompt.
  11. Check the Print Spooler service.
  12. Enable bidirectional support.
  13. Check the selected USB port in the printer properties.
  14. Test the printer on another computer.
  15. If the device is not detected anywhere, contact a service center.
