HP DeskJet 2800: Driver Unavailable in Windows 10 and Windows 11 — How to Install the Printer

This guide will help if Windows 10 or Windows 11 shows the “Driver unavailable” message for an HP DeskJet 2800 MFP, the printer does not install, does not print, or appears with an error in Printers & scanners.

This article applies to the following models: HP DeskJet 2820, HP DeskJet 2821, HP DeskJet 2822, HP DeskJet 2823, HP DeskJet 2828, HP DeskJet 2829, HP DeskJet 2820e, HP DeskJet 2821e, HP DeskJet 2822e, HP DeskJet 2823e, HP DeskJet 2842e, HP DeskJet 2852e, HP DeskJet 2855e, HP DeskJet Ink Advantage 2874, HP DeskJet Ink Advantage 2875, HP DeskJet Ink Advantage 2876, HP DeskJet Ink Advantage 2877, HP DeskJet Ink Advantage 2878, and HP DeskJet Ink Advantage 2879.

In most cases, the “Driver unavailable” error does not mean that the printer is broken. Usually, Windows has installed an incomplete driver, is using an old copy of the printer, or could not correctly complete the installation through HP app, HP Smart, or automatic device adding.

Why the “Driver unavailable” Error Appears

The error may appear for several reasons:

  • Windows automatically added the printer but did not install the full driver;
  • only a basic print driver without the required components is installed;
  • HP app or HP Smart could not complete the installation;
  • old printer copies remain on the computer after previous installation attempts;
  • the print queue or the Print Spooler service is stuck;
  • the printer is connected to a different Wi-Fi network;
  • the USB cable is connected through an adapter, USB hub, or faulty port;
  • Windows is using the wrong printer port;
  • the driver was damaged after a Windows update.

It is better to solve the problem not by repeatedly clicking Add device, but by removing old printer copies and installing the official HP driver.

Download the Official HP Easy Start Installer

For the HP DeskJet 2800 series, it is convenient to use the official HP Easy Start installer:

Download HPEasyStart-15.8.1-DJ2800_57_2_1683_3_Webpack.exe

This file is useful if HP app does not install, Microsoft Store is unavailable, the program requires an HP account, or there are problems connecting to HP servers.

Download drivers only from the official HP website or through an official HP link. Do not use websites with unverified drivers.

Method 1. Remove Old Printer Copies in Windows

If you have already tried to install the printer several times, non-working device copies may remain in Windows. Because of this, a new installation may end with the “Driver unavailable” error.

Windows 11

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Go to Bluetooth & devices.
  3. Open Printers & scanners.
  4. Find devices named HP DeskJet 2800 series, HP DeskJet 2820, HP DeskJet 2821, HP DeskJet 2855e, or a similar name.
  5. Open each HP DeskJet 2800 device.
  6. Click Remove.
  7. Remove all extra printer copies.
  8. Restart the computer.

Windows 10

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Go to Devices.
  3. Open Printers & scanners.
  4. Find devices named HP DeskJet 2800 series or with a similar name.
  5. Select the device.
  6. Click Remove device.
  7. Remove all extra printer copies.
  8. Restart the computer.

After removing the old copies, do not add the printer through Windows immediately. First, install the official driver through HP Easy Start.

Method 2. Clear the Print Queue

If stuck documents remain in the queue, Windows may incorrectly detect the printer status.

Windows 11

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Go to Bluetooth & devices.
  3. Open Printers & scanners.
  4. Select HP DeskJet 2800 series, if it is in the list.
  5. Click Open print queue.
  6. Delete all jobs from the queue.

Windows 10

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Go to Devices.
  3. Open Printers & scanners.
  4. Select HP DeskJet 2800 series.
  5. Click Open queue.
  6. Delete all jobs from the queue.

If the jobs cannot be deleted, restart the computer or use the next method.

Method 3. Restart the “Print Spooler” Service

The Print Spooler service is responsible for printer operation in Windows. If it is stuck, the printer may appear with an error.

  1. Press Win + R.
  2. Enter the command services.msc.
  3. Click OK.
  4. In the list of services, find Print Spooler.
  5. Right-click it.
  6. Select Restart.
  7. Close the Services window.
  8. Restart the computer.

If there is no Restart option, select Stop, wait a few seconds, and then select Start.

Method 4. Install the Driver Through HP Easy Start

After removing old printer copies, reinstall the driver through the official HP Easy Start file.

Download the file:

HPEasyStart-15.8.1-DJ2800_57_2_1683_3_Webpack.exe

Then install it:

  1. Find the downloaded file on the computer.
  2. Double-click it.
  3. If Windows asks for permission to run it, click Yes.
  4. Wait for the HP DeskJet 2800 series window to open.

On the first screen, you may see this question:

Do you want to help improve HP software by sharing usage data?

Click No.

Declining data sharing does not prevent driver installation.

Method 5. Continue Installation with the Current Software

During installation, this screen may appear:

There is a Download HP Easy Start button on this screen. If you have already launched the HPEasyStart-15.8.1-DJ2800_57_2_1683_3_Webpack.exe file, you do not need to click this button.

This allows you to continue the installation without downloading anything else from the internet.

Method 6. Select the Printer Connection Method

HP Easy Start may offer several connection options:

  • Wireless network — if you want to connect the printer over Wi-Fi;
  • USB cable — if you want to connect the printer directly to the computer;
  • Wireless network setup using a USB connection — if the USB cable is used temporarily to set up Wi-Fi.

If your problem is specifically the “Driver unavailable” error and you need to print from one computer, the simplest option is to select USB cable.

If you want to print over Wi-Fi, select Wireless network. Remember that HP DeskJet 2800 connects only to a 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network. This printer cannot connect to a 5 GHz network.

Method 7. Connect the Printer via USB

A USB connection often helps if Windows shows “Driver unavailable” and HP app or HP Smart does not complete setup.

  1. Take a USB printer cable.
  2. Connect the square end of the USB cable to the back of the printer.
  3. Connect the flat end of the USB cable directly to a USB port on the computer.
  4. Do not use a USB hub, adapter, or docking station.
  5. If the printer is not detected, try another USB port.
  6. If possible, try another USB cable.
  7. Wait until HP Easy Start detects the printer.
  8. Follow the installer instructions.

Important: when connected only by USB, the printer may not use HP web services, such as ePrint, HP Instant Ink, and some cloud features. For ordinary printing and scanning from a computer, a USB connection is usually enough.

Method 8. Connect the Printer via Wi-Fi

If you want to use the printer without a USB cable, connect it to Wi-Fi.

Before setup, check the following:

  • the router must broadcast a 2.4 GHz network;
  • the computer must be connected to the same network as the printer;
  • VPN must be turned off;
  • it is recommended to temporarily place the printer closer to the router;
  • do not use a guest Wi-Fi network if devices on it are isolated from each other.

If HP Easy Start does not see the printer, put the printer into Wi-Fi setup mode:

  1. Make sure the printer is turned on.
  2. Press the Wireless and Cancel buttons at the same time.
  3. Hold the buttons for about 5 seconds.
  4. When the Power button briefly blinks, release the buttons.
  5. Wait about 1 minute.
  6. The Wi-Fi light should blink blue.

After that, start the printer search in HP Easy Start again.

Method 9. If Windows Installed the Wrong Driver Again

Sometimes Windows automatically adds the printer before HP Easy Start finishes the installation. As a result, the “Driver unavailable” message appears again.

In this case, follow these steps:

  1. Disconnect the USB cable from the computer if the printer is connected via USB.
  2. Remove the printer in Printers & scanners.
  3. Restart the computer.
  4. Start HP Easy Start.
  5. Connect the USB cable only when the installer asks you to do so.
  6. Wait for the installation to finish.

Do not connect the USB cable in advance if the installer has not asked for it yet. This reduces the chance that Windows will automatically install an unsuitable driver.

Method 10. Remove the Device Through “Device Manager”

If normal removal from Printers & scanners did not help, you can remove the device through Device Manager.

  1. Right-click the Start button.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Open Print queues.
  4. Find HP DeskJet 2800 series or a similar HP device.
  5. Right-click it.
  6. Select Uninstall device.
  7. If Delete the driver software for this device appears, select the checkbox.
  8. Click Uninstall.
  9. Restart the computer.
  10. Reinstall the driver through HP Easy Start.

If the printer is not listed under Print queues, also check Printers and Universal Serial Bus controllers. Remove only devices that clearly belong to HP DeskJet 2800.

Method 11. Check the Printer Port

If the printer is installed but does not print, Windows may be using the wrong port.

Windows 11 and Windows 10

  1. Open Control Panel.
  2. Go to Hardware and Sound.
  3. Open Devices and Printers.
  4. Find HP DeskJet 2800 series.
  5. Right-click the printer.
  6. Select Printer properties.
  7. Open the Ports tab.

If the printer is connected via USB, a port such as USB001, USB002, or a similar USB port should usually be used.

If the printer is connected via Wi-Fi, a network port with the printer’s IP address is usually used.

If you are not sure which port to choose, it is better not to change the settings manually. Remove the printer and reinstall it through HP Easy Start.

Method 12. Add the Printer Manually by IP Address

This method is suitable if the printer is already connected to Wi-Fi, but Windows cannot install the driver correctly automatically.

First, find the printer’s IP address:

  1. Make sure the printer is turned on.
  2. Press the Information button or the button with the i symbol on the printer control panel.
  3. The printer will print an information page.
  4. Find the printer’s IP address on the page.

Windows 11

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Go to Bluetooth & devices.
  3. Open Printers & scanners.
  4. Click Add device.
  5. If the printer is not found, click Add manually.
  6. Select Add a printer using a TCP/IP address or hostname.
  7. Enter the printer’s IP address.
  8. Follow the Windows instructions.

Windows 10

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Go to Devices.
  3. Open Printers & scanners.
  4. Click Add a printer or scanner.
  5. If the printer does not appear, click The printer that I want isn’t listed.
  6. Select Add a printer using a TCP/IP address or hostname.
  7. Enter the printer’s IP address.
  8. Follow the Windows instructions.

After adding the printer, print a test page.

Method 13. Check Windows Updates

Sometimes Windows cannot install the driver because system components are missing or updates are not complete.

Windows 11

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Go to Windows Update.
  3. Click Check for updates.
  4. Install the updates that are found.
  5. Restart the computer.

Windows 10

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Go to Update & Security.
  3. Open Windows Update.
  4. Click Check for updates.
  5. Install the updates that are found.
  6. Restart the computer.

After the update, run HP Easy Start again and repeat the installation.

Method 14. If HP app or HP Smart Requires an HP Account

HP app and HP Smart may require internet access and signing in to an HP account. In some countries or networks, installation through these apps may not complete because of problems accessing HP servers.

If you need to install ordinary printing and scanning in Windows, use this file:

HPEasyStart-15.8.1-DJ2800_57_2_1683_3_Webpack.exe

During installation:

  1. When asked about data collection, click No.
  2. If you are offered to download HP Easy Start, click Continue with current software.
  3. Select USB cable or Wireless network.
  4. Wait for the installation to finish.

HP app may be needed for HP+, Instant Ink, remote printing, and cloud features. However, for ordinary driver installation in Windows 10 or Windows 11, HP Easy Start is often more convenient.

Method 15. If You Have an HP DeskJet 2800e or HP+ Model

Models with the letter e, such as HP DeskJet 2820e, 2821e, 2822e, 2823e, 2842e, 2852e, and 2855e, may support HP+ features.

HP+ and some cloud features may require:

  • internet connection;
  • an HP account;
  • Original HP cartridges;
  • completing setup through the HP app.

If you only need ordinary printing and scanning from a computer, installing through HP Easy Start and using a USB connection may solve the driver problem. However, if you want to use HP+, Instant Ink, or cloud features, you may need to sign in to an HP account and connect the printer to the internet.

What to Do If Nothing Helped

If the “Driver unavailable” error remains, perform a full reinstallation:

  1. Remove all HP DeskJet 2800 copies in Printers & scanners.
  2. Remove the HP DeskJet 2800 device in Device Manager, if it is listed there.
  3. Clear the print queue.
  4. Restart the Print Spooler service.
  5. Restart the computer.
  6. Turn off VPN.
  7. If connecting via USB, disconnect the USB cable and connect it only when the installer asks you to do so.
  8. Run HPEasyStart-15.8.1-DJ2800_57_2_1683_3_Webpack.exe.
  9. On the data collection screen, click No.
  10. If you are offered to download HP Easy Start, click Continue with current software.
  11. Select USB cable or Wireless network.
  12. Wait for the installation to finish.

Short Step-by-Step Checklist

If Windows shows “Driver unavailable” for HP DeskJet 2800, follow these steps:

  1. Remove old printer copies in Printers & scanners.
  2. Clear the print queue.
