This guide will help if an HP DeskJet 2800 MFP prints but does not scan. The problem may look different: Windows does not see the scanner, HP app or HP Smart does not show the scan button, a connection error appears, scanning freezes, or the program says that the printer was not found.
This article applies to the following models: HP DeskJet 2820, HP DeskJet 2821, HP DeskJet 2822, HP DeskJet 2823, HP DeskJet 2828, HP DeskJet 2829, HP DeskJet 2820e, HP DeskJet 2821e, HP DeskJet 2822e, HP DeskJet 2823e, HP DeskJet 2842e, HP DeskJet 2852e, HP DeskJet 2855e, HP DeskJet Ink Advantage 2874, HP DeskJet Ink Advantage 2875, HP DeskJet Ink Advantage 2876, HP DeskJet Ink Advantage 2877, HP DeskJet Ink Advantage 2878, and HP DeskJet Ink Advantage 2879.
In most cases, the problem is not caused by a scanner failure. Usually, the cause is an incomplete driver installation, an incorrect connection, an HP app error, an old printer copy in Windows, or a disabled scanning service.
Why the Printer Prints but Does Not Scan
Printing and scanning use different driver components. Therefore, it is possible that printing works but the scanner is not detected.
Main causes:
- Windows installed only a basic print driver;
- the HP software was not fully installed;
- HP app or HP Smart shows the printer as “Offline”;
- the computer and printer are connected to different Wi-Fi networks;
- VPN is enabled and blocks scanner discovery on the local network;
- the USB cable is connected through an adapter, USB hub, or faulty port;
- the Windows Image Acquisition (WIA) service is disabled;
- old printer copies remain in Windows after previous installations;
- HP app requires internet or an HP account, but access to HP servers is unstable.
Download the Official HP Easy Start Installer
For Windows 10 and Windows 11, it is convenient to use the official HP Easy Start installer for the HP DeskJet 2800 series:
Download HPEasyStart-15.8.1-DJ2800_57_2_1683_3_Webpack.exe
This file is useful if HP app does not install, Microsoft Store is unavailable, the program requires an HP account, or there are problems connecting to HP servers.
Download drivers only from the official HP website or through an official HP link. Do not use websites with unverified drivers.
Method 1. Check Whether There Is an Error on the Printer Itself
Before reinstalling the driver, check the MFP status.
- Turn on the printer.
- Wait 1–2 minutes.
- Check whether any error lights are blinking.
- Check whether the display shows codes such as E0, E1, E2, E3, E4, E5, or E6.
- If there is an error on the display, fix it first.
- Turn off the printer using the Power button.
- Disconnect the power cord from the printer and the power outlet for 30 seconds.
- Connect the power cord again.
- Turn on the printer and try scanning again.
If the printer shows an error, scanning may not start until that error is fixed.
Method 2. Check Whether the Document Is Placed Correctly
Most HP DeskJet 2800 MFPs use a flatbed scanner. The document must be placed on the scanner glass.
- Open the scanner lid.
- Place the document on the glass with the text or image side facing down.
- Align the sheet with the mark in the corner of the glass.
- Close the scanner lid.
- Scan again.
If the document is placed with the text facing up, the scanner may save a blank page.
Method 3. Check the USB Connection
If the MFP is connected by USB, first check the cable and port.
- Disconnect the USB cable from the computer and the printer.
- Connect the square end of the USB cable to the back of the printer.
- Connect the flat end of the USB cable directly to a USB port on the computer.
- Do not use a USB hub, adapter, or docking station.
- Try another USB port on the computer.
- If possible, try another USB cable.
- Restart the computer.
- Try scanning again.
If printing works but scanning does not, check the USB cable anyway. The connection may be sufficient for printing, but unstable for scanning.
Method 4. Check the Wi-Fi Connection
If the MFP is connected by Wi-Fi, the computer and printer must be on the same network.
Check the following:
- The blue Wi-Fi light on the printer should be solid.
- The computer should be connected to the same Wi-Fi network as the printer.
- Do not use a guest Wi-Fi network.
- Turn off VPN on the computer.
- Place the printer closer to the router.
- Restart the router, printer, and computer.
Important: HP DeskJet 2800 supports Wi-Fi only on the 2.4 GHz band. If you try to connect the printer to a 5 GHz network, it may not be detected.
If the blue Wi-Fi light is blinking, the printer is not connected to the wireless network or is in setup mode. In this case, connect it to Wi-Fi again.
Method 5. Reset Wi-Fi Setup Mode
If HP app, HP Smart, or HP Easy Start does not see the scanner over Wi-Fi, reset wireless setup mode.
- Make sure the printer is turned on.
- Find the Wireless button with the Wi-Fi symbol on the control panel.
- Find the Cancel button with the X symbol.
- Press the Wireless and Cancel buttons at the same time.
- Hold the buttons for about 5 seconds.
- When the Power button briefly blinks, release the buttons.
- Wait about 1 minute.
- The Wi-Fi light should blink blue.
After that, open HP Easy Start, HP app, or HP Smart again and add the printer again.
Method 6. Install the Driver and Scanning Components Through HP Easy Start
If printing works but the scanner is not detected, reinstalling the HP software often helps.
Download the official file:
HPEasyStart-15.8.1-DJ2800_57_2_1683_3_Webpack.exe
Then install it:
- Find the downloaded file on the computer.
- Double-click it.
- If Windows asks for permission to run it, click Yes.
- Wait for the HP DeskJet 2800 series window to open.
On the first screen, you may see this question:
Do you want to help improve HP software by sharing usage data?
Click No.
Declining data sharing does not prevent installation of the driver and scanning components.
Method 7. Continue Installation with the Current Software
During installation, this screen may appear:
Download HP Easy Start to activate available printer features
If you have already launched the HPEasyStart-15.8.1-DJ2800_57_2_1683_3_Webpack.exe file, you do not need to click the Download HP Easy Start button.
Click the link:
Continue with current software
This allows you to continue the installation without downloading anything else from the internet.
Method 8. Select the Correct Connection Method
HP Easy Start may offer several connection options:
- USB cable — direct connection to one computer;
- Wireless network — Wi-Fi connection through a router;
- Wireless network setup using a USB connection — temporary USB connection for Wi-Fi setup.
If scanning is needed on one computer and Wi-Fi is unstable, select USB cable. This is the simplest and most reliable option.
If scanning is needed over Wi-Fi, select Wireless network. Before that, make sure a 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network is being used.
Method 9. Remove Old Printer Copies in Windows
If the MFP has been installed several times, old device copies may remain in Windows. Printing may go through one copy, while scanning may try to work through another.
Windows 11
- Open Settings.
- Go to Bluetooth & devices.
- Open Printers & scanners.
- Find all devices named HP DeskJet 2800 series or with a similar name.
- Open each unnecessary device and click Remove.
- Restart the computer.
- Start the installation again through HP Easy Start.
Windows 10
- Open Settings.
- Go to Devices.
- Open Printers & scanners.
- Find all devices named HP DeskJet 2800 series or with a similar name.
- Select the unnecessary device and click Remove device.
- Restart the computer.
- Start the installation again through HP Easy Start.
Method 10. Check the WIA Scanning Service
In Windows, the Windows Image Acquisition (WIA) service is responsible for scanner operation. If it is disabled, the scanner may not work.
- Press Win + R.
- Enter the command services.msc.
- Click OK.
- In the list of services, find Windows Image Acquisition (WIA).
- Double-click it.
- In the Startup type field, select Automatic.
- If the service is stopped, click Start.
- If the service is already running, click Stop, then Start.
- Click OK.
- Restart the computer.
After restarting, try scanning again.
Method 11. Restart the “Print Spooler” Service
Even if the problem is related to scanning, the print service can also affect MFP operation in Windows.
- Press Win + R.
- Enter services.msc.
- Click OK.
- Find the Print Spooler service.
- Right-click it.
- Select Restart.
- Close the Services window.
- Try scanning.
If there is no Restart option, select Stop, wait a few seconds, and then select Start.
Method 12. Try Scanning Through Different Programs
If scanning does not work in one program, check it in another. This will help you understand whether the problem is with the driver or only with a specific application.
HP app or HP Smart
- Open HP app or HP Smart.
- Select your printer.
- Find the Scan section.
- Select the scan source: Flatbed or Scanner glass.
- Select a file format, such as PDF or JPG.
- Click Scan.
If there is no Scan section, close the app, turn off VPN, check the printer connection, and open the app again.
HP Scan
After installing the full HP software, the HP Scan program may appear in Windows.
- Open the Start menu.
- Type HP Scan.
- Open the program if it appears in the list.
- Select the scan type.
- Click Scan.
If HP Scan is not available, this is not always an error. In some installation options, scanning is performed through HP app, HP Smart, or standard Windows tools.
Windows Fax and Scan
- Open the Start menu.
- Type Windows Fax and Scan.
- Open the program that appears in the search results.
- Click New Scan.
- Select the HP scanner if it appears in the list.
- Click Scan.
If the scanner does not appear in any program, the problem is most likely with the driver, connection, or WIA service.
Method 13. If HP app Shows “Offline” but Windows Prints
Sometimes Windows can print, but HP app or HP Smart shows the device as “Offline”. In this case, scanning through the HP app may not work.
Follow these steps:
- Close HP app or HP Smart.
- Turn off VPN.
- Restart the router, printer, and computer.
- Check that the computer and printer are on the same Wi-Fi network.
- Open HP app or HP Smart again.
- If the app still shows “Offline”, try scanning through Windows Fax and Scan or connect the printer by USB.
If scanning works over USB but not over Wi-Fi, the cause is usually the network, router, VPN, or connection settings.
Method 14. Add the Printer by IP Address
This method is suitable if the printer is connected to Wi-Fi, but Windows or HP app does not always find it.
First, find the printer’s IP address:
- Make sure the printer is turned on.
- Press the Information button or the button with the i symbol on the printer control panel.
- The printer will print an information page.
- Find the printer’s IP address.
Windows 11
- Open Settings.
- Go to Bluetooth & devices.
- Open Printers & scanners.
- Click Add device.
- If the printer is not found, click Add manually.
- Select Add a printer using a TCP/IP address or hostname.
- Enter the printer’s IP address.
- Complete the installation.
Windows 10
- Open Settings.
- Go to Devices.
- Open Printers & scanners.
- Click Add a printer or scanner.
- If the device is not found, click The printer that I want isn’t listed.
- Select Add a printer using a TCP/IP address or hostname.
- Enter the printer’s IP address.
- Complete the installation.
After adding the device, check printing and scanning.
Method 15. Completely Reinstall the MFP
If nothing helped, perform a complete reinstallation.
- Open Printers & scanners.
- Remove all copies of HP DeskJet 2800 series.
- Open Device Manager.
- Check the Print queues, Printers, and Imaging devices sections.
- If there are HP DeskJet 2800 devices there, remove them.
- Restart the computer.
- Turn off VPN.
- If connecting by USB, do not connect the cable in advance.
- Download and run HPEasyStart-15.8.1-DJ2800_57_2_1683_3_Webpack.exe.
- On the data collection screen, click No.
- If you are offered to download HP Easy Start, click Continue with current software.
- Select USB cable or Wireless network.
- Connect the USB cable only when the installer asks you to do so.
- Wait for the installation to finish.
- Check scanning.
Why You Should Not Use HP Print and Scan Doctor
Older guides often recommend HP Print and Scan Doctor. This method is now better avoided.
HP Print and Scan Doctor is no longer supported. If this program is already installed on the computer, it is better to remove it and use other diagnostic methods: HP app, HP Smart, HP Easy Start, standard Windows settings, and manual service checks.
When It Is Better to Connect the MFP by USB
If scanning over Wi-Fi does not work reliably and the MFP is near the computer, use a USB connection.
USB is better if:
- HP app or HP Smart does not see the scanner;
- the printer often shows the “Offline” status;
- the router works unreliably;
- turning on VPN constantly interferes with scanning;
- you need to scan only to one computer;
- there is no stable access to HP servers.
For ordinary printing and scanning from one computer, a USB connection is usually enough.
Important: when connected only by USB, HP web services such as ePrint, HP Instant Ink, and some cloud features may be unavailable.
If You Have an HP DeskJet 2800e or HP+ Model
Models with the letter e, such as HP DeskJet 2820e, 2821e, 2822e, 2823e, 2842e, 2852e, and 2855e, may support HP+ features.
For HP+, Instant Ink, and some cloud features, the following may be required:
- internet connection;
- an HP account;
- Original HP cartridges;
- connecting the printer to a network.
However, if you need ordinary scanning and printing from a computer, in many cases it is enough to install the driver through HP Easy Start and use a USB connection or a regular Wi-Fi connection.
Short Step-by-Step Checklist
If HP DeskJet 2800 prints but does not scan, follow these steps in this order:
- Check whether there is an error on the printer display.
- Restart the printer and computer.
- Check whether the document is placed correctly on the scanner glass.
