If you encounter PCL XL errors, garbled characters, or problems with older software, you can install the exact HP LaserJet 5200 Series PCL 5 driver through Windows Update. Do not select HP LaserJet 5200L Series PCL 5: it is intended for the separate 5200L model.

Installing the HP LaserJet 5200, 5200n, 5200tn, and 5200dtn in Windows 11 via USB

Step 1: Remove the Automatically Added Printer

If the printer has not yet been connected to this computer, proceed to the next step. If the USB cable has already been connected and Windows tried to install the device automatically, first remove the print queue that was created.

1. Disconnect the printer’s USB cable from the computer.
2. Open Start → Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Printers & scanners.

In the device list, the printer may be named HP Universal Printing PCL 6 rather than HP LaserJet 5200. This is normal for the universal driver. If necessary, you can rename the print queue after verifying that printing works.

Step 5: Check the Printer in Windows 11

1. Open Start → Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Printers & scanners.
2. Select the installed printer.
3. Open Printer properties. Do not confuse this item with the regular “Printing preferences” window.
4. On the General tab, click Print Test Page.

Windows 11: Installing the Exact PCL 5 Driver Through Windows Update

This method is useful if the universal PCL 6 driver does not install, produces a PCL XL error, or prints incorrectly from older software.

1. Connect the powered-on printer via USB and wait 30–60 seconds for Windows to create a port.
2. Open Start → Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Printers & scanners.
3. Click Add device.
4. Wait for the search to finish, then click Add manually next to the message indicating that the printer is not listed.
5. Select Add a local printer or network printer with manual settings and click Next.
6. Select Use an existing port.
7. For a direct USB connection, select USB001 or DOT4_001. If neither port is available, cancel the wizard and follow the recommendations in the “No USB001 or DOT4_001 Port” section below.
8. In the manufacturer and model selection window, click Windows Update.
9. Wait for the list to update. This may take several minutes, and the window may appear unresponsive.
10. Select HP in the left column and HP LaserJet 5200 Series PCL 5 in the right column.
11. If Windows reports that the driver is already installed, first choose to use the driver that is currently installed. Replace it only if it is corrupted or there is a clear conflict.
12. Enter a descriptive name, such as HP LaserJet 5200 PCL 5.
13. If the printer does not need to be used from other computers, select Do not share this printer.

Windows 11: Manual Installation from the INF File

Installation from the INF file creates a queue on an existing port, but it does not always resolve missing USB/DOT4 components. If Windows has not created the port, use USB Plug and Play mode.

Connecting the HP LaserJet 5200n, 5200tn, and 5200dtn over a Network

The HP LaserJet 5200n, 5200tn, and 5200dtn models have a built-in HP Jetdirect print server. This section also applies to the base HP LaserJet 5200 if an optional Jetdirect network card is installed in it or the printer is connected to an external print server.

Before installation, find the IP address of the printer or print server. For built-in Jetdirect, print a configuration page: on the printer control panel, open the INFORMATION (“Information”) menu and select PRINT CONFIGURATION (“Print Configuration”). Find the IP address on the printout, for example, 192.168.1.50. If an external print server is used, look up the address in its web interface or in the router’s client list.

Adding a Network Printer in Windows 11

1. Extract the appropriate HP UPD PCL 6 package. A USB cable is not required for network installation.
2. Open Start → Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Printers & scanners.
3. Click Add device, wait for the search to finish, and select Add manually.
4. Select Add a printer using an IP address or hostname.
5. In the Device type field, select TCP/IP Device.
6. Enter the printer’s IP address. You can leave the suggested port name unchanged.
7. Clear the Query the printer and automatically select the driver to use check box so that Windows does not assign a WSD or IPP driver instead of HP UPD.
8. Click Next and wait for the port to be created.
9. Select HP Universal Printing PCL 6. If it is not listed, click Have Disk → Browse and specify hpcu360u.inf from the extracted package.
10. Enter a descriptive queue name, such as HP LaserJet 5200dtn TCP-IP.
11. Complete the wizard and print a test page.

Adding a Network Printer in Windows 10

1. Extract the HP UPD PCL 6 package that matches the Windows architecture.
2. Open Start → Settings → Devices → Printers & scanners.
3. Click Add a printer or scanner, then The printer that I want isn’t listed.
4. Select Add a printer using a TCP/IP address or hostname.
5. Select TCP/IP Device as the device type and enter the printer’s IP address.
6. Clear the check box for automatically querying the printer and selecting the driver.
7. After the port is created, select HP Universal Printing PCL 6. If necessary, click Have Disk → Browse and specify hpcu360u.inf.
8. Complete the installation and print a test page.

Jetdirect typically uses the RAW protocol and port 9100. To check the settings, open Printer properties → Ports, select the TCP/IP port that was created, and click Configure Port. Select LPR only if the external print server requires this protocol and the exact queue name is known.

To use the exact PCL 5 driver with a network printer, create an additional queue, select the existing Standard TCP/IP Port, and assign the HP LaserJet 5200 Series PCL 5 driver after updating the list through Windows Update.

Configuring Tray 3 and Automatic Two-Sided Printing

After installing HP UPD, check whether the driver detected the printer hardware correctly. This is especially important for the HP LaserJet 5200tn and 5200dtn.

1. Open Printer properties.
2. Go to the Device Settings tab.
3. In the installable options section, find Automatic Configuration.
4. Select Update Now and wait for the configuration to be retrieved.
5. For the 5200tn and 5200dtn, verify that the additional 500-sheet tray is listed as installed.
6. For the 5200dtn, verify that the duplex unit is listed as installed.
7. Click Apply → OK.

If automatic configuration did not work, enable the options manually, but select only hardware that is physically installed. The HP LaserJet 5200 and 5200n may not have an additional tray or duplex unit. The 5200tn includes Tray 3 as standard, while the 5200dtn includes Tray 3 and an automatic duplex unit.

What to Do If the Driver Does Not Install or the Printer Does Not Print

Windows Displays “Driver Is Unavailable” or “Unknown Device”

1. Disconnect the USB cable from the computer.
2. Remove only the unsuccessfully created HP LaserJet 5200 queue from “Printers & scanners.”
3. Press Win+X → Device Manager.
4. Check the Print queues, Printers, and Other devices sections.
5. If HP LaserJet 5200, an unknown USB device, or an HP device with a warning icon is present, right-click that specific device and select Uninstall device. Do not remove USB controllers or devices whose purpose is unknown.
6. Restart the computer.
7. Run Install.exe again as an administrator in USB mode — Plug and Play.
8. Connect the printer only when prompted by the installer.

No USB001 or DOT4_001 Port

The port appears after the printer is detected correctly. Do not create an arbitrary USB port manually.

1. Connect the printer to another USB port on the computer, preferably a port on the back of the desktop computer.
2. Do not use a USB hub, adapter, docking station, or extension cable.
3. Test the printer with another USB cable that is known to work.
4. Disconnect the cable and repeat the HP UPD installation in USB Plug and Play mode.
5. In Windows 10, if necessary, open the HP driver page, expand the Driver-USB section, and install HP LaserJet USB (DOT4) communication driver for Windows 8 and Higher, selecting the version for the correct architecture. Then run the HP UPD installation again.
6. In Windows 11, use the current HP UPD package for your architecture: its USB mode installs the required connection components.

The Driver Is Installed, but the Print Queue Did Not Appear

USB Plug and Play mode first adds the files to the driver store, and the queue is created after the powered-on printer is detected.

1. Make sure the printer is turned on and the control panel displays Ready.
2. Connect the USB cable directly to the computer and wait up to two minutes.
3. Open the “Printers & scanners” list and refresh the window.
4. If Windows created USB001 or DOT4_001, add the printer manually, select this port, and choose the already installed HP Universal Printing PCL 6.
5. If the port is missing, repeat the USB installation and check the cable.

Jobs Remain in the Queue, but Printing Does Not Start

1. Open Printer properties → Ports.
2. For a direct USB connection, the USB001 or DOT4_001 port associated with the HP LaserJet 5200 must be selected.
3. For a network connection, a Standard TCP/IP Port with the actual IP address of Jetdirect or the print server must be selected.
4. Do not select FILE:, WSD, or LPT1 unless the printer is physically connected using that method.
5. Click Apply and print a test page.
6. If the job remains in the queue, cancel it, turn the printer off and back on, and then restart the computer.

Windows Automatically Selected Microsoft IPP Class Driver

The generic Windows IPP driver may not display the A3 paper size, additional tray, or two-sided printing. For a USB connection, remove that queue and install HP UPD PCL 6 or the exact HP LaserJet 5200 Series PCL 5 driver. For a network connection, create a Standard TCP/IP Port instead of a WSD port.

A PCL XL Error Appears or Incorrect Characters Are Printed

1. Delete the unsuccessful job from the print queue.
2. Install the exact HP LaserJet 5200 Series PCL 5 driver through Windows Update by following the instructions for your system.
3. Create a separate queue for PCL 5, but assign it the same working USB or TCP/IP port.
4. Print the same document from the new queue.
5. If the application requires PostScript, download the current version of HP UPD PS from the HP website and create a separate queue on the same port.

A3 Is Missing from the Paper Settings

1. Make sure you are using HP Universal Printing PCL 6 or HP LaserJet 5200 Series PCL 5, not Microsoft IPP Class Driver.
2. Open Printer properties → Device Settings.
3. If Automatic Configuration is available, select Update Now.
4. Open Printing preferences → Paper/Quality and check the list of paper sizes.
5. Select A3 and make sure the corresponding paper size is loaded in the tray and configured correctly on the printer control panel.

Tray 3 or Automatic Two-Sided Printing Is Not Displayed

1. Open Printer properties → Device Settings.
2. Select Automatic Configuration → Update Now.
3. If the hardware is not detected, manually select the physically installed tray or duplex unit.
4. Tray 3 should be displayed for the 5200tn and 5200dtn.
5. Automatic printing on both sides should be available for the 5200dtn.
6. For the HP LaserJet 5200, 5200n, and 5200tn, do not enable automatic duplexing unless the corresponding unit is physically installed.

The Model Does Not Appear After Clicking “Windows Update”

1. Check the computer’s internet connection.
2. Click Windows Update again and wait 5–10 minutes. Do not close the wizard even if the list temporarily does not change.
3. If the list is still incomplete, open Control Panel → Devices and Printers.
4. Open Print Server Properties, go to the Drivers tab, and click Add.
5. Select the computer architecture, click Windows Update, and then select HP → HP LaserJet 5200 Series PCL 5.
6. After adding the driver, return to the instructions for Windows 11 or Windows 10 and create a queue on the correct port.

An Older Version of HP Universal Print Driver Prevents Installation

First, remove only the unsuccessfully created printer queue. If the error recurs, open Control Panel → Devices and Printers → Print Server Properties → Drivers and check the list.

If the older HP UPD is used only by the nonworking HP LaserJet 5200 queue, remove that queue, then select the older package on the “Drivers” tab and click Remove → Remove driver and driver package. Restart the computer and reinstall the current package. If Windows reports that the driver is in use, do not force its removal: check the remaining queues and repeat the action after restarting.

The Network Printer Is Displayed as Offline

1. Press Win+R, enter cmd, and press Enter.
2. Enter the ping IP address command, substituting the actual address of Jetdirect or the print server.
3. If there are no replies, check the address, network cable, printer power, Jetdirect or the external server, and the router settings.
4. If there are replies, open Printer properties → Ports and make sure a Standard TCP/IP Port with the same address is selected.
5. Click Configure Port and check that the protocol is RAW and the port number is 9100.
6. If printing works but Windows incorrectly shows an “Offline” status, you can clear the SNMP Status Enabled check box. Do this only after verifying that the IP address is correct.

After successful installation, print not only a Windows test page but also a regular A4 document, followed by an A3 page. On the HP LaserJet 5200tn and 5200dtn, also test printing from Tray 3, and on the 5200dtn, test automatic printing on both sides. This allows you to separately verify communication with the printer, operation of the selected driver, and correct detection of the installed hardware.
