OKI B432, MB472 and MB492 Do Not Recognize New Toner: Errors 413, 543, 547 and 613

Last Updated on 16.08.2026 by DriverNew

After installing a new cartridge, an OKI B432, MB472 or MB492 may continue to display TONER EMPTY, CHECK TONER CARTRIDGE, Toner Cartridge not installed, or code 413, 543, 547 or 613. In most cases, there is no need to reset a counter through the service menu. The device has not recognized the cartridge because of incorrect installation, an unlocked blue lever, an incompatible cartridge model, or a sensor error.

The toner cartridge and image drum in these devices are separate consumables. Replacing the image drum does not clear a Toner Empty message, and installing new toner does not reset an image drum life warning.

Where to start

Write down the exact message and code shown on the display. Then turn off the device, remove the toner cartridge, check the model on the packaging, completely remove the shipping tape, place the left end of the cartridge on the image drum pin, and lower the right end. Turn the blue lever fully toward the closed-lock symbol.

Models covered by this guide

The installation procedure and main codes apply to the following devices:

  • OKI B412dn, B432dn, B432dnw and B512dn;
  • OKI ES4132dn and ES5112dn;
  • OKI MB472dn, MB472dnw, MB492dn and MB562dnw;
  • OKI ES4172LP MFP, ES4192 MFP, ES5162 MFP and ES5162LP MFP.

The consumable part number may depend on the model, capacity and sales region. A cartridge that looks physically similar is not necessarily compatible. Before opening the packaging, check the full list of supported models.

What the messages and codes mean

Message or code What it means First check
TONER LOW The toner is running low, but printing is still possible Prepare a new cartridge; immediate replacement is not required
413: TONER EMPTY The device considers the toner to be depleted Make sure a new cartridge is installed, not a used one
543: TONER SENSOR ERROR The toner sensor is not receiving the correct status; the image drum may also be installed at an angle Reinstall the toner cartridge and the entire image drum assembly
547: IMPROPER LOCK LEVER POSITION The blue toner lever has not been moved to the locked position Turn the lever fully toward the closed-lock symbol
613: Toner Cartridge not installed The cartridge is missing or installed incorrectly Check the left pin, right end and blue lever
Please install new K Toner Cartridge The cartridge is not intended for this model or device version Compare the models listed on the box with the exact printer model

The letter K means black toner. It is not a separate error code.

Step 1. Determine where the error is displayed

  1. Look at the display on the printer or MFP itself.
  2. If the message is present on the control panel, the device has actually rejected the cartridge. Check the consumable and its installation.
  3. If the control panel shows that the device is ready but empty toner is displayed only in Windows, print a configuration page from the control panel.
  4. If the configuration page prints normally, close and reopen Status Monitor or the print queue.
  5. Do not reinstall the driver while the error is present on the OKI display: the driver cannot change the status of an internal sensor.

Use the device control panel as the primary reference. The status in Windows may sometimes update with a delay.

Step 2. Make sure you replaced the toner cartridge, not the image drum

The toner cartridge is installed on top of a separate image drum unit. It has a blue locking lever and removable protective tape. The image drum is much larger, has a handle for removing the entire assembly, and has a sensitive green surface.

  1. Read the message on the display again.
  2. If it says TONER EMPTY or REPLACE TONER, a toner cartridge is required.
  3. If it says IMAGE DRUM LIFE or REPLACE IMAGE DRUM, an image drum unit is required.
  4. Check the wording on the box: Toner Cartridge and Image Drum are different products.

A new image drum does not contain a reserve supply of toner

After a new image drum is installed, some toner from the first cartridge fills the drum’s internal system. Therefore, the life of the first toner cartridge used with a new image drum may be shorter than usual. This does not mean that the new cartridge was filled incorrectly.

Step 3. Check the compatibility of the new cartridge

  1. Find the exact device model on the front panel or configuration page.
  2. Find the part number and model list on the toner packaging.
  3. Check not only the B or MB designation but also the model numbers.
  4. Make sure the cartridge is intended for the region in which the device was purchased.
  5. Do not rely only on the shape of the cartridge housing: an incompatible cartridge may sometimes physically fit into the image drum.
  6. If the box does not list your model, do not try to clear the error with a reset. Return or replace the consumable.

If the message appeared immediately after installing a compatible third-party cartridge, keep the box and its markings. After reinstalling it correctly, a new cartridge that is still not recognized should be exchanged with the seller as incompatible or faulty.

Step 4. Reinstall the toner correctly on B412, B432 or B512

  1. Turn off the printer and wait until the mechanisms stop.
  2. Press the OPEN button.
  3. Fully open the top cover.
  4. Turn the blue cartridge lever fully toward the open-lock symbol.
  5. Carefully lift the cartridge. Do not tilt it sharply.
  6. Inspect the cartridge seating area on the image drum. Do not touch the green image drum surface.
  7. If the cartridge is new, gently rock it several times vertically and horizontally.
  8. Keep the cartridge level and completely remove the protective tape.
  9. Press the left end of the cartridge against the pin at the top of the image drum.
  10. Lower the right end into its seating position.
  11. Turn the blue lever fully toward the closed-lock symbol.
  12. Make sure the cartridge does not lift or rock on the image drum.
  13. Lightly wipe the LED head lens with a soft, dry cloth.
  14. Do not use alcohol, methanol, thinner or a damp cloth.
  15. Close the top cover firmly and turn on the printer.

Step 5. Reinstall the toner correctly on MB472, MB492 or MB562

  1. Remove documents from the ADF and scanner glass.
  2. Turn off the MFP and wait until the mechanisms stop.
  3. Lift the scanner unit.
  4. Press the top cover open button.
  5. Fully open the top cover of the printing mechanism.
  6. Turn the blue toner lever fully toward the open-lock symbol.
  7. Carefully lift the cartridge.
  8. If the cartridge is new, gently rock it several times vertically and horizontally.
  9. While holding the cartridge horizontally, completely remove the protective tape.
  10. Align the left end with the pin on the image drum.
  11. Lower the right end of the cartridge.
  12. Turn the blue lever fully toward the closed-lock symbol.
  13. Wipe the LED head with a soft, dry cloth without solvents.
  14. Close the top cover.
  15. Lower the scanner unit and turn on the MFP.

If the top cover does not close freely, do not force it. Check the position of the right end of the cartridge and the blue lever again.

Step 6. Fix error 547

Code 547 is almost always related to the position of the blue lever. The cartridge may appear to be installed but still remain unlocked.

  1. Open the device using the procedure for your model.
  2. Find the blue lever on the right side of the toner cartridge.
  3. Do not try to turn it farther against resistance.
  4. First move the lever fully to the open-lock position.
  5. Press the left edge of the cartridge against the image drum pin.
  6. Lower the right edge.
  7. Turn the lever toward the closed-lock symbol until it reaches its normal stop.
  8. Gently check by hand that the toner cartridge is secured on the image drum.
  9. Close the covers and turn on the device.

If the lever does not reach the locked position, do not use pliers. The cause may be incorrect seating, remaining packing material, or an incompatible cartridge housing.

Step 7. Fix error 543

Code 543 is related to the toner sensor. On the B432, it may also appear if the entire image drum unit was installed incorrectly after clearing a paper jam.

  1. Turn off the device.
  2. Open the upper section.
  3. Hold the image drum assembly with the toner only by its handle and remove it as one complete unit.
  4. Place the assembly on a clean, flat surface and cover it with a sheet of paper.
  5. Check that the toner cartridge is seated evenly on the image drum and that the blue lever is locked.
  6. Inspect accessible areas for scraps of paper or shipping tape.
  7. Do not wipe the sensors with a damp cloth and do not blow them with a powerful stream of air.
  8. Align the side pins of the image drum with the guide slots inside the device.
  9. Lower the assembly without tilting it.
  10. Close the covers and turn on the device.

If error 543 appeared after a paper jam, reinstall the image drum first. If it appeared immediately with new toner, check the cartridge itself and the lever position.

Step 8. Fix error 613

  1. Make sure the cartridge is actually installed in the image drum unit.
  2. Check that the protective tape has been removed.
  3. Check that the left edge is correctly installed on the pin.
  4. Lower the right edge into its normal position.
  5. Lock the blue lever.
  6. Install the entire image drum in the guides without tilting it.
  7. Close the top cover until both edges latch.
  8. Turn on the device and wait for initialization to finish.

If 613 appears with one new cartridge while the previously installed cartridge from the same device is recognized, the new consumable is most likely incompatible or faulty.

Why a new cartridge may remain in the 413 Toner Empty state

Possible cause How to check
A used cartridge from another printer has been installed Use a new cartridge that has not previously been installed in another device
The cartridge is intended for another model or region Compare the box markings with the full device model name
The blue lever is not locked Reinstall the toner cartridge and turn the lever toward the closed-lock symbol
Shipping tape or a protective part remains installed Compare the new cartridge with the old one and remove the packing material according to the instructions
A third-party cartridge is not recognized After reinstalling it, exchange it with the seller; do not change service counters
The cartridge or device sensor is faulty Test with a new compatible cartridge; if the code remains, contact a service center

Is a Toner Reset required?

A separate user Toner Reset is not required for normal toner replacement on these models. The device should automatically detect a correctly installed new cartridge.

It is not recommended to:

  • reset counters through the service menu;
  • cover or block sensors;
  • move identification parts from the old cartridge;
  • update or downgrade firmware only to remove Toner Empty;
  • repeatedly continue printing after code 413.

Continuing to print after the toner has been completely depleted may damage the image drum. Opening and closing the cover may sometimes temporarily allow a few more pages to print, but this does not replace installing a new cartridge.

If the message remains after reinstalling the cartridge

  1. Write down the exact code: 413, 543, 547 or 613.
  2. Photograph the device label, the box and the cartridge markings for contacting the seller.
  3. Make sure the cartridge is new and has not been used in another printer.
  4. Repeat the installation strictly in this order: left pin, right edge, blue lever.
  5. Reinstall the entire image drum unit.
  6. Close both sides of the top cover and turn on the device.
  7. If the message appears immediately after initialization, replace the new cartridge through the seller.
  8. If the error remains with another known-compatible new cartridge, the sensor or locking mechanism needs to be checked by a service center.

When contacting a service center, provide the model, serial number, error code and markings of the installed cartridge. This will help distinguish a sensor fault from an incompatible consumable without unnecessarily replacing the image drum.
