OKI B432, MB472 and MB492: Image Drum Near Life and Errors 343, 347, 353, 563

Last Updated on 16.08.2026 by DriverNew

The messages ORDER DRUM, DRUM LIFE, Image Drum Unit Near Life and Please install new Image Drum Unit refer to the image drum, not the toner cartridge. Therefore, installing new toner usually does not resolve this problem. You need to check the remaining life of the image drum and install a new unit when it reaches the end of its service life.

After a new image drum is installed correctly in an OKI B432, MB472 or MB492, a separate manual counter reset is not required. The device recognizes the new consumable and updates its life automatically. If the message remains, the cause is more often a used or incompatible image drum, incorrect installation, or an error detecting the unit.

What to do depending on the message

ORDER DRUM or Image Drum Unit Near Life — printing is still possible; prepare a new image drum. DRUM LIFE, Please install new Image Drum Unit, or code 347, 353 or 563 — install a new image drum. Code 343 — first reinstall the existing image drum because the device does not detect it in the correct position.

Models covered by this guide

The main messages, automatic detection of a new image drum, and troubleshooting procedure apply to the following devices:

  • OKI B412dn, B432dn, B432dnw and B512dn;
  • OKI ES4132dn and ES5112dn;
  • OKI MB472dn, MB472dnw, MB492dn and MB562dnw;
  • OKI ES4172LP MFP, ES4192 MFP, ES5162 MFP and ES5162LP MFP.

The enclosure design of B-series printers and MB-series MFPs is different, so the step-by-step replacement procedures are provided separately. Before purchasing, compare the exact device model with the compatibility list on the image drum packaging.

What the messages and codes mean

Message or code Device status What to do
ORDER DRUM The image drum in the B412/B432/B512 is approaching the end of its life Prepare a new image drum and toner; printing does not need to stop immediately
Image Drum Unit Near Life The image drum in the MB472/MB492/MB562 is nearly at the end of its life Purchase a compatible new image drum and continue printing only until it is replaced
DRUM LIFE The calculated image drum life has reached its limit Replace the image drum
Please install new Image Drum Unit Printing is stopped until a new image drum is installed Install a new, previously unused unit
343: Please check Image Drum Unit The image drum is missing or installed incorrectly Remove the unit and install it correctly in the guides
347, 353 or 563 The image drum has reached the end of its service life; the exact code depends on the device status Install a new image drum instead of resetting the old one

If the warning appears only in a program on the computer while the device control panel shows that it is ready, refresh the status window first. If the message is present on the printer or MFP display, reinstalling the driver will not help: the status is determined inside the device.

How the image drum differs from the toner cartridge

The toner cartridge contains the powder used for printing. It is installed on top of the image drum unit and secured with a blue lever. The image drum forms the image and has a sensitive green cylinder. When removed from the device, the toner and image drum come out as one assembly but remain two separate consumables.

  1. If the control panel shows TONER LOW, TONER EMPTY or REPLACE TONER, replace the toner cartridge.
  2. If it shows ORDER DRUM, DRUM LIFE or Image Drum Unit Near Life, replace the image drum.
  3. If toner and image drum messages appear at the same time, prepare both consumables.

The approximate image drum life is about 30 000 single-sided A4 pages when printing jobs of approximately three pages each. If one-page jobs are printed frequently, the life may be reduced by approximately half. Print density, paper, temperature and humidity also affect it.

How to check the remaining image drum life on B412, B432 and B512

  1. Press the up or down arrow button until CONFIGURATION appears on the display.
  2. Press OK.
  3. Use the arrow buttons to select SUPPLIES LIFE.
  4. Press OK.
  5. Use the arrow buttons to find the image drum life value.
  6. To exit, press ON LINE or wait until the main screen returns.

Another method is to print the configuration page: open PRINT INFO, select CONFIGURATION and confirm printing by pressing OK.

How to check the remaining image drum life on MB472, MB492 and MB562

  1. Press the STATUS button on the MFP control panel.
  2. Use the arrow buttons to select Device Information.
  3. Press OK.
  4. Select Supplies Status.
  5. Press OK and check the image drum status.

To obtain a printed report, press SETTING, open Reports, select Configuration, then select Yes and press OK.

Before replacing the image drum

  1. Prepare a new image drum compatible with the exact device model.
  2. Do not unpack it in advance. The photosensitive green cylinder must not be exposed to light for a long time.
  3. Clear some space next to the device and place several clean sheets of paper there.
  4. Turn off the device and wait until the mechanisms stop.
  5. Do not touch the green surface with your hands or place the image drum on a table with this surface facing down.
  6. Do not leave the open image drum exposed to room lighting for more than five minutes. If the work is delayed, cover it with clean paper.
  7. Do not throw the used image drum into a fire. Pack it in a bag and dispose of it according to local regulations.

Do not forget to remove the packing materials

The desiccant pack and the orange toner protective cover must be removed from the new image drum. Do not attempt to print with the protective cover still installed. Remove it only after installing the new image drum in the device, without touching the green cylinder.

Replacing the image drum on an OKI B412, B432 or B512

  1. Press the OPEN button.
  2. Fully open the top cover.
  3. Hold the old unit by the handle and carefully lift it straight up. The toner will come out together with the image drum.
  4. Place the old unit on a clean, flat surface.
  5. Unpack the new image drum immediately before installation.
  6. Remove the desiccant pack.
  7. Locate the guide pins on the new image drum and the corresponding slots inside the printer.
  8. Lower the new image drum without tilting it. Do not use force: the pins must enter the guides.
  9. Press the release on the orange protective cover and remove the cover. Toner may be present on the underside, so do not turn the cover over above the printer.
  10. Install the new toner cartridge: press its left edge against the pin on the image drum, then lower the right edge.
  11. Turn the blue toner lever fully toward the closed-lock symbol.
  12. Check that the image drum is seated evenly and that the cartridge does not lift up.
  13. Close the top cover firmly.
  14. Turn on the printer and wait for initialization to finish.

If you need to continue using the old toner, it can be transferred from the old image drum to the new one after the orange cover is removed. First turn the blue lever on the old cartridge toward the open-lock symbol, remove the cartridge, then install it on the new image drum and lock the lever. In this case, the remaining toner indication may temporarily be inaccurate, and the TONER LOW or REPLACE TONER message may appear earlier than expected.

Replacing only the image drum on an OKI MB472, MB492 or MB562

This procedure allows you to transfer the toner currently in use from the old image drum to the new one.

  1. Remove documents from the automatic document feeder and platen glass.
  2. Lift the scanner unit.
  3. Press the top cover open button.
  4. Fully open the top cover of the printing mechanism.
  5. Hold the image drum assembly by the handle with both hands and lift it out of the MFP.
  6. Place the old unit on a clean, flat surface.
  7. Unpack the new image drum and remove the desiccant pack.
  8. Align the left and right guide pins with the slots inside the MFP.
  9. Carefully lower the new image drum without tilting it.
  10. Press the toner protective-cover release button on the new image drum.
  11. Remove the orange cover without touching the green cylinder.
  12. On the old unit, turn the blue toner-cartridge lever fully toward the open-lock symbol.
  13. Remove the toner cartridge from the old image drum without tilting it sharply.
  14. Press the left edge of the toner cartridge against the pin on the new image drum and lower the right edge.
  15. Turn the blue lever fully toward the closed-lock symbol.
  16. Close the top cover.
  17. Lower the scanner unit.
  18. Turn on the MFP and wait for initialization to finish.

If both the image drum and toner are being replaced at the same time, remove the old assembly, install the new image drum, remove the desiccant pack and orange cover, then install the new toner and lock the blue lever.

How to fix error 343

Code 343 does not mean that the image drum has reached the end of its life. The device does not detect the image drum in the correct position.

  1. Turn off the printer or MFP.
  2. Open the upper section using the procedure for your model.
  3. Remove the entire image drum assembly with the toner by its handle.
  4. Check the guides for scraps of paper, packing material or foreign objects.
  5. Make sure the toner cartridge is seated evenly on the image drum and the blue lever is locked.
  6. Align both side pins of the image drum with the guide slots.
  7. Lower the assembly straight down without tilting it.
  8. Do not press on the green cylinder or try to force the image drum into place with a tool.
  9. Close the covers and turn on the device.

If 343 appeared immediately after installing a new image drum, compare its housing and markings with the old unit. An incompatible image drum may sometimes fit inside the device but fail to sit in the correct operating position.

Do you need to reset the Drum Life counter manually?

No. When a new image drum is installed, its life counter is updated automatically. There is no mandatory separate Drum Reset step in the normal user menu for B412/B432/B512 and MB472/MB492/MB562.

Do not follow unverified instructions that tell you to:

  • hold Cancel while the front cover is open;
  • turn on the device while holding buttons;
  • open the service menu and manually reset Drum Count;
  • short contacts or move identification parts;
  • reset the counter of the old image drum instead of replacing it.

Such methods may apply to other generations of OKI devices or remanufactured consumables. Manually resetting an old image drum does not restore the photosensitive surface and may hide the actual degree of wear.

If the message remains after installing a new image drum

  1. Write down the exact message and code shown on the device control panel.
  2. If 343 is shown, reinstall the image drum in the guides.
  3. If 347, 353 or 563 is shown, make sure that the installed image drum is genuinely new and has not been used before.
  4. Check the model and regional compatibility on the packaging.
  5. Make sure the desiccant pack and orange protective cover have been removed.
  6. Check the position of the toner cartridge and blue lever.
  7. Close the top cover completely, then turn on the device and wait for initialization.
  8. Open the consumables-life menu again and check the image drum value.
  9. If the old message remains with a new compatible unit, do not try to reset the counter through the service menu. Exchange the image drum with the seller as unrecognized or faulty.
  10. If a second known-compatible new image drum is also not detected, the sensor and installation mechanism need to be checked by a service center.

When to stop printing

Opening and closing the top cover may sometimes temporarily allow printing to continue after DRUM LIFE. Use this only to finish an urgent job. If repeating spots, a gray background, lines, faded areas appear, or the device stops again, replace the image drum and do not continue repeatedly opening the cover.

Why Toner Low appeared after installing a new image drum

A new image drum fills its internal system with toner from the installed cartridge. If a partially used cartridge was transferred to the new image drum, the device may display TONER LOW or REPLACE TONER soon after replacement. The remaining-toner indication may also be temporarily inaccurate.

  1. Make sure the message refers specifically to the toner and that the image drum warning has disappeared.
  2. Do not remove the new image drum or reset it again.
  3. If printing continues, prepare a new compatible toner cartridge.
  4. When TONER EMPTY appears, install new toner and lock the blue lever.
  5. After several jobs, evaluate the print quality. Slight temporary fading immediately after replacing the image drum may disappear on its own.

If the image drum warning has disappeared and only the toner message remains, the new image drum has been detected correctly. Further action should concern the toner cartridge, not the image drum counter.
