If the OKI MC332, MC362 or MC562 displays error 540–547 or 610–613 after replacing the toner, first write down the error number and the indicated color. These codes look similar but refer to different situations: the device did not recognize the cartridge, the cartridge is installed incorrectly, or the cartridge is not detected at all.
In most cases, the problem can be resolved without disassembling the MFP: check that the cartridge matches the model, remove any shipping materials, reinstall the cartridge and move the colored lock lever fully into the locked position. If the error remains, testing with a new, known-good cartridge of the same color helps distinguish a cartridge fault from a problem with the image drum or sensor.
What to check first
Open the top cover, locate the color shown in the message, make sure the installed toner cartridge is intended for your model and that all packaging has been removed. Insert the left end of the cartridge first, lower the right end, press the cartridge down gently from above and move the colored lock lever fully to the left. Close the cover until it latches and turn the MFP on again.
Models This Guide Applies To
The codes and troubleshooting procedure described here apply to the following models from the same family:
- OKI MC332dn;
- OKI MC342dn and MC342dw;
- OKI MC352dn;
- OKI MC362dn and MC362w;
- OKI MC562dn, MC562w and MC562dw;
- OKI ES3452 MFP;
- OKI ES5462 MFP and ES5462dw MFP;
- OKI MPS2731mc.
The appearance of the cartridges and consumable part numbers may differ depending on the model, cartridge yield and sales region. Therefore, always verify the part number of a new cartridge against the support page or consumables catalog for the exact full model of the device.
What Errors 540–547 and 610–613 Mean
| Color | Cartridge Not Recognized or Sensor Error | Check Cartridge Installation | Cartridge Not Installed |
|---|---|---|---|
| Yellow (Y) | 540 | 544 | 610 |
| Magenta (M) | 541 | 545 | 611 |
| Cyan (C) | 542 | 546 | 612 |
| Black (K) | 543 | 547 | 613 |
The letters in the message indicate the color: Y — Yellow, M — Magenta, C — Cyan, K — Black. For example, code 611 refers to the magenta cartridge, while code 543 refers to the black cartridge.
- 540–543: the MFP cannot recognize the toner cartridge of the corresponding color. The cause may be incorrect installation of the toner cartridge or image drum, an unlocked lever, contamination in the accessible detection area, or a fault in the cartridge, drum or sensor.
- 544–547: the cartridge of the corresponding color must be checked. Usually the lock lever has not been moved fully into the locked position or a shipping component remains on the new cartridge.
- 610–613: the toner cartridge of the corresponding color is not installed or is not detected. First check that the cartridge is present, seated correctly and compatible.
Do Not Confuse TONER LOW and TONER EMPTY Messages
TONER LOW means that the toner is running low, but the cartridge can still be used. Prepare a replacement consumable. If printing becomes faint, open the top cover and gently tap the body of the installed cartridge several times to redistribute the toner more evenly. Then close the cover securely.
TONER EMPTY means that the cartridge must be replaced. Do not install a new cartridge early just because of a TONER LOW message: premature replacement wastes the remaining toner and in some cases may cause a toner sensor error.
The toner cartridge and image drum are different parts
The toner cartridge is a long replaceable container filled with toner powder and installed on top of the image drum. The image drum, or Image Drum / ID Unit, is located underneath the cartridge. A toner error should not be addressed by replacing a randomly purchased drum until the code, color and cartridge itself have been checked.
Before Reinstalling the Cartridge
- Write down the full code and color from the message. Do not limit the description to “toner not detected.”
- Wait until printing, copying and scanning are complete.
- Turn off the MFP normally: press and hold the power button for approximately one second, but no longer than five seconds.
- Wait for the message Shutdown in progress. Please wait. and for the indicator to turn off completely. Do not unplug the device while it is shutting down.
- Wait several minutes. The fuser unit inside the device may remain hot even after the power is turned off.
- Prepare a clean sheet of paper for the removed cartridge and a dry, lint-free cloth.
Do not work near an open flame and do not use a vacuum cleaner that is not designed for toner. The powder is extremely fine and can easily spread throughout the room.
Check That the Correct Consumable Was Purchased
A similar cartridge shape does not necessarily mean compatibility. Before opening the packaging, compare:
- the full MFP model, including the letters after the number;
- the cartridge color;
- the consumable part number on the packaging;
- the region for which the cartridge is intended;
- the part type: Toner Cartridge, not Image Drum.
Do not use a cartridge part number from another model simply because the name contains MC3xx or MC5xx. The MC332/MC342 and MC352/MC362/MC562 may use different consumables. In addition, part numbers and available cartridge yields depend on the region.
If the cartridge has already been used in another printer, it is not suitable for diagnostic testing. The MFP may refuse a previously used cartridge. For a control test, you need a new, known-good cartridge for the exact model and of the same color.
How to Correctly Remove and Reinstall the Toner Cartridge
Step 1. Open the MFP
- Carefully lift the scanner unit.
- Press the top cover release lever.
- Fully open the top cover.
- Do not touch the area marked with a high-temperature warning.
Step 2. Locate the Cartridge of the Required Color
When looking into the open MFP from the front, the cartridges are arranged in the following order:
- Yellow (Y) — yellow;
- Magenta (M) — magenta;
- Cyan (C) — cyan;
- Black (K) — black.
Check the color on the cartridge label and compare it with the error code. Do not remove the other cartridges unnecessarily and do not interchange different colors.
Step 3. Unlock and Remove the Cartridge
- Move the colored lock lever of the selected cartridge fully to the right. This is the unlocked position.
- Hold the right end of the cartridge and lift it slightly.
- Move the cartridge to the right to release its left end.
- Carefully remove the cartridge and place it on the prepared sheet of paper.
Keep the cartridge horizontal. Do not turn it upside down, shake it sharply or press on the shutters. Do not touch the green surface of the image drum underneath the cartridge.
Step 4. Check the Cartridge and Installation Area
- Make sure the outer packaging, protective tape and any other shipping materials specified in the cartridge instructions have been removed from the new cartridge.
- Inspect the cartridge body. Cracks, spilled toner, a broken lock lever or a deformed shutter are reasons to stop the installation.
- Make sure the corresponding image drum is seated evenly in its correct position.
- Using a dry, clean, lint-free cloth, gently wipe the accessible upper surface of the image drum unit. Do not use alcohol, solvent or water.
Step 5. Prepare the New Cartridge
If a new cartridge is being installed:
- Remove it from the box, but leave it inside the inner packaging for now.
- Gently rock the cartridge from side to side several times while keeping it horizontal. This distributes the toner inside.
- Remove the packaging and all specified shipping materials.
If you are only reinstalling an already opened cartridge, do not shake it near the open MFP.
Step 6. Install the Cartridge
- Hold the cartridge by the upper center section and position it above the image drum of the same color.
- Insert the left end first into the mounting position on the image drum.
- Press the left end gently against the spring and lower the right end.
- Gently press the cartridge down from above so that it sits evenly and fully in place.
- While holding the cartridge down, move the colored lock lever fully to the left. This locks the cartridge and opens toner feed into the image drum.
Remember the lock lever direction
Right — unlock and remove. Left — install, lock and open toner feed. After installation, the lever must be moved fully to the left, and the cartridge must not sit higher than the neighboring cartridges.
Step 7. Close the Covers and Check the Result
- Carefully wipe the surface of the LED head with a dry, clean, lint-free cloth.
- Close the top cover and press it down until it latches securely.
- Lower the scanner unit.
- Wait a few seconds after shutdown and turn on the MFP.
- Wait for initialization to finish. Do not open the cover during this process.
If the device reaches the ready state, print one color page. If the same code appears again, use the appropriate error group section below.
If Error 544, 545, 546 or 547 Remains
This group is most often associated with incomplete installation of a new cartridge. Check the following items in order:
- Match the code to the color using the table.
- Turn off the MFP normally again and open the top cover.
- Check whether any protective tape, plug, shipping pin or part of the packaging remains.
- Make sure the left end of the cartridge entered the mounting position first.
- Check that the right end is fully lowered and that the cartridge is level with the neighboring cartridges.
- Press the cartridge down gently from above and move the colored lock lever fully to the left.
- Latch the top cover securely and turn on the MFP.
If the lock lever does not reach the left position, do not apply additional force. Remove the cartridge and check the packaging, correct model and seating of both ends again. A broken lock lever or deformed shutter requires cartridge replacement or repair of the mechanism.
If Error 610, 611, 612 or 613 Remains
This group means that the device did not detect the installed toner cartridge. Proceed as follows:
- Check that the cartridge is installed in the position corresponding to the color shown in the message.
- Compare the part number on its label with the exact MFP model.
- Remove the cartridge and inspect its body, lock lever and shipping materials.
- Check that the corresponding image drum is seated evenly.
- Install the cartridge left end first, lower the right end and move the lock lever fully to the left.
- Close the cover until it latches and turn the device on again.
If the message appeared after installing a compatible cartridge, do not conclude that a counter reset is required. First test this color with a new cartridge for the exact model. If the new, known-good cartridge is recognized, the previous cartridge or its incompatibility was the cause.
If Error 540, 541, 542 or 543 Remains
These codes require checking not only the toner cartridge but also the corresponding image drum. Perform the following steps in order:
- Reinstall the cartridge of the required color and move the lock lever fully to the left.
- Check that the image drum underneath it is not raised, tilted or installed in the wrong color position.
- Using a dry, lint-free cloth, remove visible toner and dust only from accessible upper surfaces.
- Close the cover until it latches and turn on the device.
- If the code returns, install a new, known-good cartridge for the exact model and of the same color.
If the error disappears with the new cartridge, replace the previous cartridge. If the same error remains on the same color with a known-good cartridge, there is likely a problem with the image drum seating, its detection element, the locking mechanism or an internal sensor. Do not disassemble the device at this stage.
What to Do If the Colored Lock Lever Does Not Move
- Do not use pliers, a screwdriver or other tools.
- Make sure you are trying to move the lock lever of the correct cartridge and not a part of the image drum.
- Press the cartridge gently and evenly down against the image drum.
- To remove the cartridge, try moving the lever to the right smoothly, without jerking.
- If it does not move, stop. Excessive force may break the lever or shutter and spill toner.
A jammed lock lever usually indicates a tilted, deformed or incompatible cartridge. If it cannot be safely returned to the unlocked position, contact service support and provide the model, error code and color.
How to Test the Cartridge Without Disassembling the MFP
The most useful test is to install another new, known-good, compatible cartridge of the same color. Do not move yellow, magenta, cyan and black cartridges between positions.
| Test Result | Likely Cause | Next Action |
|---|---|---|
| The error disappears with the new cartridge | The previous cartridge is faulty, incompatible or was previously used in another device | Use the recognized cartridge; return the faulty cartridge to the seller |
| The same code remains on the same color | The image drum is installed incorrectly, the locking mechanism is damaged or the sensor is faulty | Reinstall the corresponding drum; if the code returns, contact service support |
| The lock lever will not close with the new cartridge | Packaging remains, the cartridge is not seated in the guides, is deformed or is incompatible with the model | Do not apply force; remove and verify the cartridge, then replace it if damaged |
If no spare new cartridge is available, record the code, color, consumable part number and when the error appeared. This information will allow the seller or service center to verify compatibility without guessing.
A Compatible or Remanufactured Cartridge Is Not Recognized
A compatible cartridge may work, but physical compatibility alone does not guarantee that it will be recognized. The error may be caused by an incorrect part number, a different sales region, shipping damage, a previously used cartridge or a defect in the element used by the MFP to identify the consumable.
- Take a photo of the cartridge label and the message on the display.
- Verify the full MFP model, color, region and consumable part number with the seller.
- Check that the cartridge is new and has not been installed in another device.
- Reinstall it according to the instructions without applying force.
- If the error remains, test the MFP with a new genuine cartridge for the exact model or another known-good cartridge with confirmed compatibility.
Do not update or downgrade the firmware solely in an attempt to make the MFP accept an unknown cartridge. Without a confirmed link between a specific firmware version and a specific problem, this is not a safe diagnostic method.
If Toner Has Spilled
- Do not rub the powder into the surface.
- First carefully collect it with a soft brush.
- Remove the remaining trace with a cool, damp cloth.
- Do not use hot water or solvents: they can set the stain.
- If toner gets into your eyes, rinse them with plenty of cold water and seek medical attention.
- If toner is inhaled, move to fresh air and seek medical attention if symptoms persist.
When Service Is Required
Contact service support if all safe checks have been completed but at least one of the following conditions remains:
- code 540–543 remains on the same color with a new, known-good cartridge for the exact model;
- the corresponding image drum is seated evenly, but the error returns after every power-on;
- the colored lock lever, shutter or mounting position is broken;
- the cartridge cannot be safely removed or installed;
- spilled toner, damaged parts or a foreign object can be seen inside the device;
- after correct installation, mechanical noise, cracking sounds or a new hardware code appears.
When contacting service support, provide the full MFP model and serial number, error code, color, installed cartridge part number and the result of testing with another new cartridge. This reduces repeated checks and helps determine immediately whether the consumable, image drum or internal sensor needs to be replaced.
Methods You Should Not Use
- Do not enter service mode or manually reset toner counters.
- Do not short contacts or install fuses, chips or homemade bypass devices.
- Do not swap cartridges of different colors for testing.
- Do not disassemble the sensor board, image drum or toner feed mechanism.
- Do not blow compressed air into the device: toner will spread throughout the internal components.
- Do not wipe internal parts with alcohol, solvent or hot water.
- Do not force the lock lever or slam the cover shut.
- Do not install firmware from another model or downgrade the firmware as a universal solution for a cartridge error.
