If HP LaserJet Pro MFP M125r does not connect to the computer, the drivers do not install, or only printing works after installation, it is recommended to first remove the previous failed installation and then reinstall the drivers in the correct sequence.
The instructions apply to Windows 11 and Windows 10 64-bit. For normal operation of the MFP, it is sufficient to install the printer driver, scanner driver, and HP Scan.
Which driver to use for HP LaserJet Pro MFP M125r
For installation, the HP full solution package for the LaserJet Pro MFP M125-M126 series is recommended:
Download HP LaserJet Pro MFP M125-M126 drivers and software
File name:
LJPro_MFP_M125-126_full_solution_15311.exe
This installation package already contains the required components:
- HP LaserJet Pro MFP M125-M126 PCLmS — printer driver;
- HP LaserJet Pro MFP M125-M126 Scan Driver — scanner driver;
- HP Scan — software for scanning documents and photos.
This is sufficient for normal printing and scanning. There is no need to install HP Smart or additional HP utilities.
1. First remove the previous failed installation
If you have already tried to install the driver, the printer was detected incorrectly, or the installation ended with an error, it is not recommended to immediately run the installer again. First remove the old installation.
Turn off the HP LaserJet Pro MFP M125r and disconnect the USB cable from the computer.
Windows 11
- Open Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Printers & scanners.
- If HP LaserJet Pro MFP M125r, HP LaserJet Pro MFP M125-M126, or another previously created instance of this MFP is listed, open it and remove the device.
- Go to Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
- Find the HP LaserJet Pro MFP M125-M126 software and uninstall it.
- If old HP Scan components or drivers for this series are listed separately, they can also be removed before a clean reinstallation.
Windows 10
- Open Settings → Devices → Printers & scanners.
- If HP LaserJet Pro MFP M125r, HP LaserJet Pro MFP M125-M126, or another previously created instance of this MFP is listed, select it and click Remove device.
- Open Settings → Apps → Apps & features.
- Find the HP LaserJet Pro MFP M125-M126 software and uninstall it.
- Remove old HP Scan components or drivers for this series if they remain from the previous installation.
After removal, restart the computer. Do not connect the MFP USB cable yet.
2. Additional check in Windows 11
If the HP driver has already failed to install several times in Windows 11, check whether Windows protected print mode is enabled.
Open:
Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Printers & scanners
If the Windows protected print mode setting is present on the page and is enabled, turn it off before installing the traditional HP driver.
After changing the setting, restart the computer.
If this option is not available in your version of Windows 11 or the mode is already disabled, proceed with the driver installation.
In Windows 10, you can skip this section.
3. Install the HP LaserJet Pro MFP M125r drivers
Make sure the HP LaserJet Pro MFP M125r is turned off or at least not yet connected to the computer with a USB cable.
- Run the
LJPro_MFP_M125-126_full_solution_15311.exefile. - If Windows displays a User Account Control prompt, allow the program to run.
- Wait for the HP installer to prepare.
- Accept the terms of the license agreement and continue the installation.
4. Select only the required software
At the software selection stage, the installer displays several components.
For HP LaserJet Pro MFP M125r, leave the following selected:
- HP LaserJet Pro MFP M125-M126 Scan Driver — required;
- HP LaserJet Pro MFP M125-M126 PCLmS — required;
- HP Scan — leave selected.
Additional software is not required for normal printing and scanning. If the installer allows you to clear the check boxes, you can choose not to install:
- HP Update;
- HP Printer Status and Alerts;
- HP Device Toolbox;
- other optional additional components.
After selecting the components, click Next and wait for the files to be prepared.
5. Select the correct connection type
The installer is used for several models in the M125-M126 series, so it may offer USB, network, and wireless connection options.
For HP LaserJet Pro MFP M125r, select:
Directly connect to this computer using a USB cable
Click Next.
6. Connect the MFP only when prompted by the installer
The installer will first prepare the required components. This may take several minutes.
A window will then appear asking you to connect the device.
Only after that:
- Turn on the HP LaserJet Pro MFP M125r.
- Wait until the device is ready for use.
- Connect the USB cable to the MFP.
- Connect the other end of the cable directly to a USB port on the computer.
- Wait for the installer to detect the device.
After the MFP is detected, the program will automatically install and configure the printer driver and scanner driver.
Do not disconnect the USB cable or close the program until the installation is completely finished.
7. What to do if the installer does not detect HP M125r
If the program stops at the device connection stage and does not continue, first check the USB connection.
- Make sure the MFP is turned on.
- Disconnect the USB cable from the computer.
- Wait a few seconds and connect it again.
- Try another USB port on the computer.
- Do not connect the printer through a USB hub, monitor, keyboard, or docking station.
- If you have another printer USB cable, try using it.
After connecting the device, wait for a while. Windows and the HP installer may need several seconds to detect it.

If the MFP is still not detected:
- Right-click the Start button.
- Open Device Manager.
- Open View → Show hidden devices.

After removing the problematic device:
- disconnect the USB cable;
- restart the computer;
- run the HP installer again;
- connect the MFP only when the corresponding prompt appears.
8. If the driver installation fails again
If the HP program does not even reach the device connection stage or the installation stops unexpectedly, check the Windows printing service.
- Press Win + R.
- Enter:
services.msc
- Press Enter.
- Find the Print Spooler service.
- Its status should be Running.
- If the service is stopped, start it.
After that, restart the computer and repeat the clean driver installation.
Also make sure that the installation file is located on the computer’s local drive. If necessary, create the following folder:
C:\HP
Copy the LJPro_MFP_M125-126_full_solution_15311.exe file there and run the installation again.
9. The printer works, but the scanner is not detected
If printing already works but HP Scan cannot detect the scanner, you do not need to reinstall the entire printer immediately.
Check the following:
- The MFP must be turned on.
- The USB cable must be connected directly to the computer.
- Restart the computer and the MFP.
- Run HP Scan again.
Check the Windows scanning service
- Press Win + R.
- Enter
services.mscand press Enter. - Find the Windows Image Acquisition (WIA) service.
- Make sure the service is running.
After starting the service, open HP Scan again.
Check whether the scanner itself works
Try making a normal copy directly on the HP LaserJet Pro MFP M125r without using the computer.
If copying works normally, the scanning mechanism is working, and the cause should be looked for in the driver, USB connection, or Windows.
If the MFP cannot even make a normal copy, the problem may no longer be related to the Windows driver but to the device itself.
10. Check printing and scanning
After the installation is complete, test both functions separately.
Printing: open a small document and send it to HP LaserJet Pro MFP M125r.
Scanning: find HP Scan in the Start menu, place a document or photo on the scanner glass, and perform a test scan.
