When trying to open the administrative settings of an OKI B432, MB472 or MB492, the standard root and aaaaaa combination may not work. This does not always mean that the previous owner changed the password. For some devices, the factory rule was changed: the initial password is the ten-character serial number, with uppercase letters converted to lowercase.
Additional confusion is caused by the separate Network Password. Its value may consist of the last six characters of the MAC address, but this password is not intended for normal access to the web interface through Administrator Login.
Where to start
To sign in through a browser, enter the user name root. First try the password aaaaaa — exactly six lowercase Latin letters with no spaces. If it does not work, print the configuration page, find the ten-character serial number and enter it in lowercase. For example, the serial number AB1234CD56 becomes the password ab1234cd56.
Models covered by this guide
The revised procedure for determining the factory password applies to the following device groups:
- OKI B412dn, B432dn, B432dnw and B512dn;
- OKI MB472dn, MB472dnw, MB492dn and MB562dnw;
- some regional variants of these models;
- a number of related color and monochrome OKI devices.
Older manuals for the B432, MB472 and MB492 specify the password aaaaaa. It is still used on many units. The serial-number password should be checked if the standard value is not accepted or if the device was supplied with a sheet titled Changing the factory default admin password.
First determine which password the device is asking for
| Where the prompt appears | What information is required | Factory value |
|---|---|---|
| Printer web page, Administrator Login | Device administrator user name and password | root and aaaaaa, or the serial-number password |
| Device control panel, Admin Setup | The same administrator password; the user name root does not need to be entered |
aaaaaa or the serial-number password |
| Configuration Tool or network-card settings, Network Password | Separate network-interface password | The last six characters of the MAC address |
| Secure printing or user accounting | Job PIN, user name, or account code | Set by the user or the organization’s administrator |
These values are not interchangeable. The last six characters of the MAC address do not replace the root password in the Administrator Login window, and the secure-print PIN does not open Admin Setup.
Step 1. Check the standard password without typing errors
- Switch the keyboard layout to English.
- In the user-name field, enter
rootin lowercase. - In the password field, enter
aaaaaa— six lowercase Latin letters a. - Do not add a space before or after the password.
- Disable automatic filling of the saved password in the browser.
- Click OK.
For the B432, MB472 and MB492, the old factory value is exactly aaaaaa. The combinations 999999, 123456 and 000000 found on the internet apply to other models or other functions. There is no need to try them instead of checking the serial number.
Step 2. Print the configuration page and find the serial number
It is recommended to use the number from the printed configuration page. This reduces the risk of confusing the device serial number with the network-module number, a consumable part number, or the MAC address.
B412, B432, B512
- Load an A4 sheet in the main tray.
- Use the arrow buttons to open PRINT INFO.
- Press OK.
- Select CONFIGURATION.
- Press OK. The printer will print the Menu Map.
- Find the line SERIAL NO. or SERIAL NUMBER.
MB472, MB492, MB562
- Load an A4 sheet in the main tray.
- Press the physical SETTING button.
- Make sure Reports is selected and press OK.
- Select Configuration and press OK.
- On the confirmation screen, select Yes.
- Press OK.
- On the printed page, find Serial No. or Serial Number.
Do not use the MAC Address instead of the Serial Number
A MAC address usually consists of twelve hexadecimal characters and belongs to the network interface. In this case, the device serial number contains ten characters. The new factory password requires the Serial Number.
Step 3. Convert the serial number into the password
- Copy the ten-character serial number without spaces.
- Leave the digits unchanged.
- Convert all uppercase Latin letters to lowercase.
- Do not add hyphens, colons, or the word OKI.
- Enter the resulting ten characters in the password field.
| Serial number on the configuration page | Password to enter | Incorrect version |
|---|---|---|
AB1234CD56 |
ab1234cd56 |
AB1234CD56 |
The password is case-sensitive. If the serial number contains the letter O, do not replace it with the digit 0. Likewise, do not confuse the letter I with the digit 1.
Step 4. Sign in to the OKI web interface
- Find the IPv4 Address value on the configuration page.
- Make sure the computer is connected to the same local network.
- Open a browser.
- Enter the device address, for example
http://192.168.1.25. - Do not add leading zeros. Correct:
192.168.1.25, incorrect:192.168.001.025. - Press Enter.
- On the OKI page, click Administrator Login.
- In the User name field, enter
root. - In the Password field, first enter
aaaaaa; if it is not accepted, enter the serial number in lowercase. - Click OK.
- If a device-information page appears after the first login, complete it or click SKIP.
The normal status page may open without a password. To change network settings, tray settings, e-mail settings, the address book and other protected settings, you must use Administrator Login.
Step 5. Sign in to Admin Setup from the device control panel
B412, B432 or B512
- Use the arrow buttons to select ADMIN SETUP.
- Press OK.
- Enter the administrator password one character at a time.
- Confirm the entered value by pressing OK.
MB472, MB492 or MB562
- Press SETTING.
- Select Admin Setup.
- Press OK.
- Enter the administrator password.
- Select Enter and press OK.
On the control panel, the user name root normally does not need to be entered. Only the password, which is also used for the web interface, is required.
If the serial-number password worked before but no longer works
After Reset Settings or Erase Privacy Data is performed, the password may revert not to the serial number, but to the value specified in the manual. For the B432, MB472 and MB492, try aaaaaa again in this case.
- Enter
rootand the serial-number password. - If access is denied, enter
rootandaaaaaa. - If neither option works, determine whether the password was changed by an administrator or service organization.
- Do not repeat the configuration reset: it will not safely restore an unknown custom password and may delete required settings.
Do not use Erase Privacy Data just to recover a password
On an MFP, this operation may delete the address book, scan profiles, saved jobs and other user data. If the current password was changed and forgotten, contact the device administrator or a service center. Reinstalling the Windows driver does not affect the password.
Why the last six characters of the MAC address do not work
The B432 and related models have a separate network-card password. It is used in Configuration Tool and in some windows for changing network settings. Its factory value is the last six characters of the MAC address.
For example:
MAC Address: 00:25:36:AB:12:34
Network Password: AB1234
This password should not be entered in the normal Administrator Login window. For the web interface, use:
User name: root
Password: aaaaaa
or the ten-character Serial Number in lowercase
If the application specifically says Network Password, use the network-card password. If it says Administrator Login, Admin Password or Admin Setup, the device administrator password is required.
If the web page opens but the login keeps repeating
- Make sure the user name is entered as
root, with no uppercase letter or spaces. - Remove the saved password for the printer’s IP address from the browser’s autofill data.
- Open a private browser window and try signing in again.
- Make sure the serial number is entered in full and all letters have been converted to lowercase.
- Do not copy the password from a formatted document if a space may be inserted with it.
- Make sure you opened the IP address of the correct printer if several OKI devices are installed on the network.
- Allow cookies for the device’s local page.
- Try another modern browser.
If the page does not open at all using the IP address, this is not a password error. First check the network connection, current IPv4 address and the network selected on the computer.
How to change the password after a successful login
The new password must contain from 6 to 12 Latin letters and digits. It is case-sensitive. Write down the new value before leaving administrative mode.
Through the B412, B432 or B512 web interface
- Sign in as
root. - Open Admin Setup.
- Select Management > Change Password.
- Enter the new value in New Password.
- Enter it again in Verify Password.
- Click Submit.
- Wait for the network function to restart and sign in with the new password.
Through the MB472, MB492 or MB562 web interface
- Sign in as
root. - Open Admin Setup.
- Select Management > Admin Password.
- Enter the new password in New Admin Password.
- Enter it again in New Admin Password (Verify).
- Click Submit.
- Use the new value the next time you sign in.
From the B412, B432 or B512 control panel
- Open ADMIN SETUP and enter the current password.
- Select CHANGE PASSWORD.
- Enter the new value.
- When VERIFY PASSWORD appears, enter it again.
- Press OK.

- Enter it again in Enter Password (Verify).
- Press OK.
What to do if none of the passwords work
| Situation | Action |
|---|---|
aaaaaa does not work on a new or recently purchased device |
Use the ten-character Serial Number in lowercase |
| The serial-number password worked before, then a reset was performed | Try aaaaaa again |
| The device was previously serviced by an organization or used by another owner | Request the password from the previous administrator or service organization |
| An unknown custom password has been forgotten | Contact a service center with the model, serial number and proof of ownership |
| The password is accepted in Configuration Tool but not on the web page | Do not use Network Password for Administrator Login |
Which methods from the internet should not be used
- SEL + SHIFT combinations during power-on. They apply to other or older devices. The MB472 and MB492 control panels do not have a SEL button, so this procedure does not apply.
- Random service key combinations. They may open maintenance mode or change settings without restoring the password.
- Erase Privacy Data just for one password. This operation can delete MFP user data and settings.
- Reinstalling the driver. The password is stored in the device and does not depend on the Windows driver.
- Updating firmware as a reset method. An update is not intended to bypass a changed password and creates additional risk if performed incorrectly.
- Trying passwords from other models. First check
aaaaaa, the serial number and whether the password was changed.
The safest procedure is to check the exact type of password prompt, try aaaaaa, print the configuration page, enter the serial number in lowercase, and only then determine whether the password was changed by the owner. If a custom value has genuinely been forgotten, further recovery should be performed through the administrator or a service center without randomly deleting the device settings.
