OKI MB472, MB492 and MB562 Scan Only One Side — How to Enable Duplex Scanning and Copying

If a two-sided document passes through the ADF but only the front sides are saved in the file, this usually does not indicate a scanner malfunction. The OKI MB472, MB492 and MB562 support duplex scanning, but it may be disabled for a new job. You need to enable it in the place from which scanning is started.

ADF stands for Automatic Document Feeder. These models use a reversing ADF: the device scans one side, reverses the sheet inside the feeder, and then scans the other side.

Models covered by this guide

This guide applies to the following monochrome MFPs:

• OKI MB472dn, MB472dnw and MB472w;
• OKI MB492dn;
• OKI MB562dnw;
• OKI ES4172LP MFP and ES4192 MFP;
• OKI ES5162 MFP, ES5162dnw and ES5162LP MFP.

The OKI MB472 uses a button-based control panel with a 3.5-inch display. The MB492 and MB562 have a touch panel. Therefore, the following procedures are provided separately for these devices.

Prepare the document and check the ADF

Where the actions are performed: at the ADF input tray. Windows, the driver, and the scanning program are not used yet.

1. For the first test, use one flat two-sided A4 sheet of plain paper.
2. Make sure the sheet has no paper clips, staples, labels, tears, severe folds, or wet ink.
3. Place the document in the ADF face up.
4. If the document is in portrait orientation, feed its left edge into the ADF.
5. If the document is in landscape orientation, feed its top edge into the ADF.
6. Move the side guides so that they fit exactly against the edges of the sheet, but do not bend it.

For testing, it is convenient to write “Front” and “Back” on the two sides of the sheet. After scanning, you will immediately see whether the machine scanned both sides and whether the image orientation is correct.

Step 1. Enable duplex scanning on OKI MB472

Where the actions are performed: on the MFP button-based control panel. This method is used when scanning from the control panel to email, a shared folder, or USB memory.

1. Place the two-sided original in the ADF face up.
2. Press the physical SCAN button.
3. Use the arrow buttons to select the required scanning type in the Scan Menu and press OK.
4. Specify the email address, shared-folder profile, or another destination depending on the selected method.
5. Use the arrow buttons to select Scan Setting and press OK.
6. Select Duplex Scan and press OK.
7. Select Long Edge Bind or Short Edge Bind.
8. Press OK.
9. Press the START button to begin scanning.

The factory setting for Duplex Scan is OFF. Therefore, for a new job the machine may scan only the front side even though the ADF itself is working correctly.

Step 2. Enable duplex scanning on OKI MB492 and MB562

Where the actions are performed: on the MFP touch panel. The setting applies to a job started from the control panel.

1. Place the two-sided original in the ADF face up.
2. On the touch panel, press Scan or press the physical SCAN button.
3. Select the save method: Scan To E-mail, Scan To Shared Folder, or Scan To USB Memory.
4. Select the recipient, shared-folder profile, or connected USB drive.
5. When scanning to email or a shared folder, open the Advanced tab and press Duplex Scan.
6. When saving to a USB drive, find Duplex Scan on the Scan To USB Memory tab.
7. Select long-edge or short-edge binding.
8. If necessary, specify the file format, resolution, and file name.
9. Press START.

Depending on the firmware version, the Duplex Scan button may be located on the Basic or Advanced tab. The name of the setting itself remains the same.

How to choose long-edge or short-edge binding

Where the actions are performed: in the Duplex Scan setting on the MFP control panel or in the source settings of the scanning program.

If the front side is saved correctly but the reverse side is rotated by 180 degrees, the machine is working correctly. Repeat the job and select the other binding edge.

Step 3. Check the resulting file

Where the actions are performed: in a PDF or image viewer on the computer or on the device to which the file was sent.

1. Open the created file.
2. Check the number of pages. Two two-sided sheets should produce four scanned pages.
3. Make sure that the reverse side of each sheet follows its front side.
4. Check the text orientation on the reverse-side pages.
5. If only the front sides were saved, repeat the job and, before pressing START, make sure once again that Duplex Scan is not set to OFF.

During duplex scanning, the reversing ADF pulls the sheet back into the paper path to scan the second side. The additional sheet movement and a short pause are normal.

Scanning to a computer from the control panel via WSD

Where the actions are performed: on the MFP control panel. A WSD scanner must already be registered on the computer.

OKI MB472

1. Place the document in the ADF and press SCAN.
2. Select Computer and press OK.
3. Select Select A Connecting PC and press OK.
4. Select From WSD Scan and press OK.
5. Select the computer that should receive the file.
6. Select Duplex Scan, set it to ON, and press OK.
7. Press START.

OKI MB492 and MB562

1. Place the document in the ADF and press Scan.
2. Select Scan To Computer.
3. Press Select A Connecting PC.
4. Select From WSD Scan.
5. Select the destination computer.
6. Enable Duplex Scan and press START.

If scanning is started from Windows 11

Where the actions are performed: in the Windows Scan app or another scanning program on the computer.

1. Place the two-sided original in the ADF face up.
2. Open the Start menu, type Windows Scan in the search box, and open the app.
3. In the Scanner field, select OKI MB472, MB492, or MB562.
4. In the Source field, select the document feeder. Do not select Flatbed.
5. If the app displays a setting with the words Duplex scanning or a separate duplex feeder option, enable it.
6. Specify the file type and save folder.
7. Click Scan.

In Windows 11, the MFP is often installed as a WSD scanner. The app may show Feeder as the source but may not provide a duplex switch. There is no hidden setting in this window that needs to be enabled in the printer properties.

If the duplex option is unavailable, scan from the control panel to a shared folder, email, or USB memory. Another option is to use a program that works with the installed OKI scanner driver through TWAIN or WIA and allows you to select the duplex ADF.

If scanning is started from Windows 10

Where the actions are performed: in the Windows Scan app, Windows Fax and Scan, or a program that supports WIA/TWAIN.

In the Windows Scan app, follow the same steps as in Windows 11: select the MFP, then specify the document feeder in the Source field. If the duplex option is not displayed, test scanning through a program that uses the OKI WIA or TWAIN driver.

1. Open the program from which you normally start scanning.
2. Select the OKI scanner, not another accidentally added device with a similar name.
3. Open the source or document feeding settings.
4. Select the ADF option whose name explicitly indicates duplex scanning.
5. Do not select Flatbed: this means the large platen glass.
6. If the driver interface is displayed in English, the source setting may be called Scan Method. Select an ADF option containing the word Duplex.
7. Run a test using one two-sided sheet.

ActKey and some versions of the OKI scanner driver may only provide an English interface. Therefore, the names Scan Method, ADF, Duplex, and Flatbed may remain in English.

If there is no duplex source in the Windows program

Where the actions are performed: first in the program on the computer, and then on the MFP control panel for a test job.

1. Make sure the ADF is selected rather than the platen glass.
2. Open the advanced source settings. Some programs show duplex mode only after the ADF has been selected.
3. Close the program and perform a direct duplex scan from the control panel to USB memory, email, or a shared folder.
4. If both sides are saved when scanning from the control panel, the ADF is working correctly. The limitation is related to the program, WSD profile, or installed scanner driver.
5. Use the working control-panel method or another program with TWAIN/WIA support.

Do not reinstall the PCL6 or PS print driver just to make duplex scanning appear. The print driver controls printing and does not add source modes to a scanning program.

How to configure binding for WSD scanning

This section is needed if both sides are scanned through WSD but the reverse-side pages are saved upside down.

OKI MB472

Where the actions are performed: in the administration menu on the MFP button-based control panel.

1. Press SETTING.
2. Select Admin Setup and press OK.
3. Enter the current administrator password and confirm the login.
4. Select Scanner Setup.
5. Open WSD Scan Setup.
6. Select Binding.
7. Set Long Edge Bind or Short Edge Bind.
8. Press the return button until the main screen appears.

OKI MB492 and MB562

Where the actions are performed: in the administration menu on the MFP touch panel.

1. Press Device Settings.
2. Select Admin Setup.
3. Enter the current administrator name and password.
4. Press Scanner Setup.
5. Open WSD Scan Setup.
6. Press Binding.
7. Select the binding position and return to the main screen.

This administrative setting applies to WSD scanning. It does not replace the selection of long-edge or short-edge binding for a normal scan job to email, a folder, or USB memory.

Step 4. Configure duplex copying on OKI MB472

Where the actions are performed: on the MFP button-based control panel. Windows and the printer driver are not involved.

1. Place the original in the ADF. If the source document is two-sided, using the ADF is required.
2. Press COPY.
3. Use the arrow buttons to open the Change Settings menu.
4. Select Duplex Copy and press OK.
5. Select the required combination of source document and finished copy.
6. Press OK.
7. Specify the number of copies.
8. Press START.

If you select OFF (Simplex), the MFP will scan and output only a single-sided document.

Step 5. Configure duplex copying on OKI MB492 and MB562

Where the actions are performed: on the MFP touch panel.

1. Place the two-sided original in the ADF face up.
2. Press Copy or the physical COPY button.
3. On the Copy or Basic tab, press Duplex Copy.
4. Select 1 → 2, 2 → 1, or 2 → 2 mode.
5. Select long-edge or short-edge binding.
6. If the orientation of the original is detected incorrectly, press Change and correct the Direction setting.
7. Press OK.
8. Specify the number of copies and press START.

• 1 → 2 — single-sided originals are output on both sides of the paper;
• 2 → 1 — both sides of the original are output on separate single-sided pages;
• 2 → 2 — both sides of the original are scanned and printed on both sides.

For the first test, use plain A4 paper. If duplex printing of the copy is unavailable, check the paper size, type, and weight in the selected tray. Some small sizes and special media are not suitable for automatic duplex printing.

Why the platen glass does not scan both sides automatically

Where the actions are performed: on the platen glass and the MFP control panel.

The platen glass can see only the side facing down. Enabling Duplex Scan does not allow the machine to turn over an original placed on the glass by itself.

If you need to combine several single-sided pages from the platen glass, use Continuous Scan: after the first page, the MFP will prompt you to place the next document. Place the next page, select Start Scan, and after the last page select Scan Complete.

When copying single-sided pages from the platen glass onto both sides of the paper, continuous scanning may be enabled automatically. However, the ADF is still required to read both sides of one physical sheet automatically.

Determine the cause from the test result

When the problem is related to the ADF mechanism

A mechanical fault should be suspected only after a direct test from the control panel. Enable Duplex Scan, use one new, flat A4 sheet, and save the file to USB memory, a shared folder, or email.

Contact a service center if one of the following symptoms occurs during this test:

• the MFP scans the front side but does not attempt to reverse the sheet to scan the back side;
• the sheet stops or jams every time during reversal;
• cracking, grinding, or another unusual sound comes from the ADF;
• a document feed error appears on the control panel;
• the reverse side is missing both when scanning from the control panel and when copying in 2 → 1 or 2 → 2 mode;
• the same problem occurs with several new sheets of plain A4 paper.

Do not disassemble the reversing mechanism or pull out a jammed sheet with force. Open only the user-accessible ADF covers and remove the document in the direction shown on the control panel or in the diagram under the cover.
