OKI MC332, MC362 and MC562: error 461 — MFP asks to load A4 or paper in MP Tray

Error 461 on an OKI MFP often seems illogical: A4 paper is already loaded in Tray 1, but the device again asks you to load A4 or directs the job to the MP Tray. Usually, the paper presence sensor is working correctly. The MFP stops printing because the media size or type in the print job does not match the settings registered for the selected tray.

To fix the error, four values must match: the page size in the document, the paper size in the driver, the paper source and the physical tray settings on the OKI control panel. Simply adding more sheets will not help if, for example, the document is Letter size, the driver requests A4, and a different size is registered for Tray 1 on the control panel.

Which models this guide applies to

This guide applies to the following color MFPs:

• OKI MC332dn;
• OKI MC342dn and MC342dw;
• OKI MC352dn;
• OKI MC362dn and MC362w;
• OKI MC562dn, MC562w and MC562dw;
• OKI ES3452 MFP;
• OKI ES5462 MFP and ES5462dw MFP;
• OKI MPS2731mc.

Tray 2 availability depends on the model and whether the optional additional tray is installed. If there is no second tray, skip the steps relating to Tray 2.

OKI menu and driver item names below are given in English. If another interface language is selected, use the corresponding localized items.

What error 461 means

The display may show messages such as:

• Tray Media Mismatch;
• Please install paper (A4 Plain) on Tray 1;
• a request to load the specified paper size and type in Tray 1 or Tray 2;
• a request to load paper in the MP Tray;
• error number 461 or 462, depending on the tray and firmware version.

The message means that the job settings do not match the tray configuration. The MFP does not measure the size of every sheet before printing begins: the user must correctly register the size, type and weight of the loaded paper on the control panel.

Step 1. Write down the required settings from the display

Do not press RESET or cancel the job until you have written down the information from the message.

1. Find the tray name in the message: Tray 1, Tray 2 or MP Tray.
2. Write down the required size: A4, Letter, Legal, Custom or another size.
3. Write down the paper type: Plain, Letter Head, Labels, Card Stock, Glossy or another type.
4. Write down the error number if it is displayed.

If the display shows Letter but A4 is loaded in the tray, adding another stack of A4 will not fix the error. You need to change the job size to A4 or load Letter paper and register it on the control panel.

Step 2. Check the paper and guides in the tray

1. Pull out the tray indicated on the display.
2. Remove sheets of a different size or type. Do not mix A4 and Letter in the same stack.
3. Check the markings on the paper packaging. A4 is 210 × 297 mm, while Letter is 215.9 × 279.4 mm.
4. Fan the stack and align it on a flat surface.
5. Load the paper under the retaining tabs without exceeding the maximum fill mark.
6. Move the side guides against the edges of the stack without squeezing it tightly.
7. Set the rear paper stopper exactly to the paper length.
8. Carefully push the tray fully into the MFP.

Guides that are too loose may cause skewing, while guides that are too tight may make feeding difficult. If the actual sheet has a different length, the MFP may finish the job with error 400 after feeding has already started.

Step 3. Register the paper on the OKI control panel

After loading the paper, tell the MFP exactly what is in the tray.

1. Press SETTING.
2. Select Paper Setup and press OK.
3. Select Tray 1, Tray 2 or MP Tray.
4. Open Paper Size.
5. Select the size that is actually loaded. For standard office paper, A4 is used in most countries.
6. Open Media Type.
7. For standard office paper, select Plain.
8. Open Media Weight.
9. Select the value that corresponds to the paper weight.
10. Press OK after each change and return to the ready screen.

How to select Media Weight

Standard 80 g/m² paper corresponds to Medium Light, not Medium. If Printer Setting is selected in the driver, the paper weight specified on the control panel is used.

If the job remains paused after the size and type have been matched, press RESET once to clear the media warning. Do this only after checking the paper: the button does not correct an incorrect size; it only allows the current job to continue. If the request appears again, cancel the job and resend it with the correct settings.

Step 4. Check A4 or Letter in the document

A setting inside the application can override the default value configured in Windows. Check the document that causes the error.

Microsoft Word

1. Open the document.
2. Go to the Layout tab.
3. Click Size.
4. Select A4 210 × 297 mm.
5. Open File → Print.
6. Make sure A4 is also displayed in the print settings.
7. Open Printer Properties or Preferences and check the size again.

Changing the page size may slightly move text, tables and page breaks. Review the document before printing.

PDF documents

1. Open the print window in the PDF application.
2. Find the original page size. Documents created in some countries are often Letter size.
3. If A4 is loaded in the printer, select A4 in the printer properties.
4. Enable page scaling: Fit, Fit to page or a similar option.
5. Do not select Actual Size if the original Letter page must print on A4 without requesting Letter paper.
6. Check the preview and print one page.

Scaling changes the size of the page content, but it does not correct the physical tray configuration. Tray 1 must still be registered as A4 on the control panel.

Printing from a browser

1. Open the browser print window.
2. Expand More settings.
3. Select A4 as the paper size.
4. Check the scale. For the first attempt, use Fit to page or a value that does not crop the content.
5. Open the system print dialog and check the paper size again in the OKI properties.

Some web pages and cloud documents use regional account or browser settings. Therefore, Letter may appear again even after the default Windows paper size has been changed.

Step 5. Check the driver settings in Windows 11

1. Open Start → Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Printers & scanners.
2. Select the required OKI queue.
3. Open Printing preferences.
4. Determine the installed driver type: PCL5, PCL XL, PS, XPS or Microsoft IPP Class Driver. If the type is not visible in the preferences window, open Printer properties → Advanced and check the Driver field.
5. Set A4, the correct paper source and paper type according to the instructions for your driver below.
6. Click Apply and OK.

Changing the Windows default settings affects new jobs. A job that is already in the queue retains its previous settings — it must be cancelled and sent again.

Step 6. Check the driver settings in Windows 10

1. Open Start → Settings → Devices → Printers & scanners.
2. Select your OKI model.
3. Click Manage → Printing preferences.
4. Set A4, the correct paper source and paper type according to the instructions for the installed driver.
5. Click Apply and OK.

The settings of a specific document can override these values. After changing the default settings, open the application’s print window again and check its settings.

PCL5, PCL XL and XPS settings

1. In the print window, select the OKI queue using the PCL or XPS driver.
2. Click Preferences or Settings.
3. Open the Setup tab.
4. In the Size field, select A4.
5. In the Source field, select Tray 1 or Auto.
6. In the Weight field, leave Printer Setting selected if the paper weight is already configured correctly on the control panel.
7. If the driver has a separate media type field, select Plain for standard paper.
8. Disable Manual Feed or Use MP Tray as manual feed if a normal job should print from Tray 1.
9. Save the settings.

When Source: Auto is selected, the MFP searches for a tray registered with the required paper size and type. It is not required to select Tray 1 simply because it contains paper.

PS driver settings

1. In the print window, select the OKI queue using the PS driver.
2. Click Preferences or Settings.
3. Open the Paper/Quality tab.
4. In the Paper Source field, select Tray 1 or Automatically Select.
5. Click Advanced.
6. In the Paper Size field, select A4.
7. In the Media Type field, select Plain for standard office paper.
8. If the Printer Setting paper weight value is available, leave it selected when the control panel is configured correctly.
9. Click OK in all open windows.

If Microsoft IPP Class Driver is used

The built-in Windows driver may display fewer settings than the model-specific OKI drivers.

1. Open Printing preferences.
2. Select A4 and Tray 1 or automatic selection.
3. If paper size, media type or MP Tray Usage is unavailable, configure these settings on the MFP control panel.
4. Cancel the old job and resend a one-page document.

If you regularly need to print envelopes, custom sizes, heavy paper or select a specific tray, install the model-specific PCL5, PCL XL or PS driver intended for your model.

Check the paper size and source in macOS

1. Open the document and select File → Print.
2. Click Show Details if the compact print window is displayed.
3. In Paper Size, select A4.
4. Open Paper Feed and select Auto Select or Tray 1.
5. If the OKI PS driver is installed, open Printer Features → Feature Sets → Paper Input Options.
6. Set Media Type: Plain or a value corresponding to the media actually loaded.
7. Check the preview and send one page.

If the document is Letter size but A4 is loaded in the MFP, scale the content to fit an A4 page. After correcting the settings, cancel the old job in Print Center and send the document again.

Why the MFP requests the MP Tray

MP Tray is the multipurpose tray on the front of the device. It is used for envelopes, labels, card stock, heavy and custom-size paper. A normal A4 job may be sent there for one of the following reasons:

• Source: MP Tray is selected in the driver;
• manual feed is enabled;
• MP Tray Usage is set to When Mismatching;
• Tray 1 settings do not match the job size or type;
• the document requests media that is not registered in any cassette tray.

Check MP Tray Usage

1. Press SETTING.
2. Open Admin Setup and enter the administrator password.
3. Go to Print Setup → Print Menu → Tray Configuration → MP Tray Usage.
4. Select the setting that corresponds to the required behavior.

For an office where the MP Tray is used only for special media, Do Not Use is usually convenient. If paper should be inserted manually when there is a mismatch, use When Mismatching.

If MP Tray Empty or error code 490 is displayed

1. Open the MP Tray.
2. Extend the paper supports.
3. Press the platform down until it locks in the lower position.
4. Load the required paper and adjust the guides.
5. Press the release button so that the platform rises and presses the paper against the feed roller.
6. On the control panel, register Paper Size, Media Type and Media Weight.
7. If the paper is loaded correctly but the MP Tray still appears empty, check whether the paper presence sensor flag moves freely. Do not bend it or apply force.

Configure Auto Tray Switch and Tray Sequence

Automatic tray switching works only between trays registered with identical paper.

1. Open SETTING → Admin Setup → Print Setup → Print Menu → Tray Configuration.
2. Set Auto Tray Switch: ON if the device should take paper from another tray after the current tray becomes empty.
3. Check Tray Sequence if multiple cassette trays are installed.
4. Make sure both trays actually contain the same paper.
5. In Paper Setup, set the same Paper Size and Media Type for both trays.

Auto Tray Switch does not correct an A4 and Letter mismatch and should not switch the device from Plain to Labels. If the settings differ, stopping printing is normal protective behavior.

Do not disable Media Check as the first solution

The Media Check setting checks whether the job matches the registered paper. Older advice often recommends immediately disabling this check to remove the message. This hides the cause but does not correct the settings.

First match the paper size, type and source. Disabling Media Check should only be considered in a managed work environment where the user deliberately allows printing despite a mismatch. For envelopes, labels, card stock, heavy paper and custom sizes, it is better to leave the check enabled.

Remove the job with the old settings

After changing the settings, the error may appear again because the old Letter or MP Tray job is still in the queue.

Windows 11

1. Open Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Printers & scanners.
2. Select the OKI.
3. Open Open print queue.
4. Cancel the problematic job.
5. Close the application from which printing was started.
6. Open the document again, select A4 and send one page.

Windows 10

1. Open Settings → Devices → Printers & scanners.
2. Select the OKI and click Open queue.
3. Cancel the problematic job.
4. Reopen the document and send a one-page A4 print job.

If the job cannot be removed, restart the computer and properly turn the MFP off and back on. Do not disconnect the power while a job is being processed or firmware is being updated.

Printing on custom-size paper

The Custom value must be identical on the control panel and in the driver.

1. Measure the paper in millimeters.
2. Open SETTING → Paper Setup.
3. Select the required tray.
4. Set Paper Size: Custom.
5. Open Custom and enter the Width and Length.
6. Set the same dimensions in the document or driver properties.
7. Select the correct Media Type and Media Weight.
8. Print one page first.

For automatic duplex printing, the supported size range corresponds to Tray 2. A6 paper, envelopes, cards and long sheets are not suitable for automatic duplex printing.

Envelopes, labels, cards and heavy paper

For these media, use the MP Tray and the rear face-up output.

1. Open the rear stacker and extend its support before sending the job.
2. Load the media in the MP Tray.
3. For envelopes, select the appropriate size: COM-9, COM-10, Monarch, DL or C5.
4. Select the correct Media Type: Labels, Card Stock or the required option.
5. Set the actual Media Weight.
6. In the driver, select MP Tray and the same size and type.
7. Disable duplex printing for envelopes, labels and media heavier than 176 g/m².
8. Print one test sheet.

The MP Tray holds up to 100 sheets of plain paper or up to 10 envelopes, but the actual quantity depends on thickness. Do not exceed a total stack height of 10 mm.

How error 400 differs from error 461

Error 461 appears before printing or during media selection: the job settings do not match the tray settings.

Error 400 occurs after feeding has started, when the device detects a sheet of incorrect length, a double feed or paper stopping near a sensor. Correcting the driver settings is important, but the physical paper path must also be checked.

1. Cancel the job.
2. Pull out the tray being used and check the actual paper size.
3. Make sure there are no sheets stuck together or paper of another size in the stack.
4. Fan and align the paper.
5. Check the guides and rear paper stopper.
6. Inspect the accessible part of the paper path for a jammed or torn sheet.
7. Open and firmly close the top cover so that the MFP checks the paper path status again.
8. Register the correct size on the control panel and print one page.

If error 400 repeatedly occurs with standard A4 paper from different trays, possible causes include double feeding, a worn roller or incorrect operation of the paper length sensor. Repeatedly disabling Media Check will not help in this case.

If error 461 remains after the settings have been matched

1. Print a simple test page from the printer properties. If it prints, the cause is in the settings of the specific application or document.
2. Create a new one-page A4 document without custom margins and send it to print.
3. Make sure the correct OKI queue is selected. Windows may have separate PCL5, PCL XL, PS, XPS and IPP queues with different settings.
4. Make sure Tray 2 is not selected in the driver on a model without a second tray installed.
5. Disable Manual Feed.
6. Set Source: Tray 1, Size: A4, Media Type: Plain and Weight: Printer Setting.
7. On the control panel, set Tray 1 to A4, Plain and the actual paper weight.
8. Remove the previous job from the queue and send a new file.
9. Check whether the print server is changing the form or tray settings. On a work computer, contact the print queue administrator.

When to check the sensor or feed roller

A hardware cause becomes likely if:

• the control panel, driver and document are configured identically;
• the error appears with a new simple A4 document;
• the same paper prints correctly from one tray but is not detected correctly in another;
• the MP Tray still appears empty to the MFP after paper is loaded correctly and the platform is raised;
• the roller can be heard rotating, but the sheet is not picked up;
• repeated error 400 or double feeding occurs.

First clean the accessible rollers with a lint-free cloth slightly moistened with water and wait until they are completely dry. Do not use oil, solvent or abrasives. If the sensor flag is broken, the roller does not pick up paper or the error recurs with several packs of suitable paper, the feed mechanism requires service.
