OKI MC332, MC362 and MC562: Vertical Line on Scans and Copies — How to Clean the ADF Glass

Last Updated on 07.08.2026 by DriverNew

If a straight line from the top to the bottom edge of the page appears on scans or copies made with the OKI MC332, MC362 or MC562, do not start by replacing the toner, image drum or reinstalling the driver. First determine whether the defect appears only when the original is fed through the ADF, also appears when scanning from the platen glass, or is already present on the MFP’s internal test page.

When the line appears only when using the ADF, the most likely cause is a small spot, dried ink, toner particle or paper dust on the narrow ADF glass. The sheet moves past stationary contamination, so a tiny spot turns into a continuous line across the entire image.

Where to start

Print the internal Color Tuning Pattern, then make two copies of the same clean document: first from the platen glass, then through the ADF. If the internal pattern and the copy from the platen glass are clean, but the line appears only on the ADF copy, clean the narrow glass strip next to the main glass and the white surface opposite it.

Models This Guide Applies To

The location of the main scanner surfaces and the diagnostic procedure apply to the following color MFPs:

  • OKI MC332dn;
  • OKI MC342dn and MC342dw;
  • OKI MC352dn;
  • OKI MC362dn and MC362w;
  • OKI MC562dn, MC562w and MC562dw;
  • OKI ES3452 MFP;
  • OKI ES5462 MFP and ES5462dw MFP;
  • OKI MPS2731mc.

The same diagnostic procedure applies to the related OKI MC351, MC361, MC561, ES3451 MFP and ES5461 MFP, although the shape of the cover and the location of individual parts may differ slightly. Open only the document cover and the ADF covers intended for user access. Do not remove the scanner housing.

Why a Single Spot on the Glass Creates a Long Line

When scanning from the platen glass, the original remains stationary while the scanner unit moves underneath it. A speck of dust on the platen glass usually appears in the image as a dot, spot or short mark in the same location as the contamination.

The ADF works differently: the scanner unit remains stationary under a narrow fixed glass strip while the document moves over it. If a spot of dirt is present on this narrow strip, it blocks the same part of the image throughout the entire passage of the sheet. As a result, a straight line parallel to the document feed direction appears on the scan or copy.

The line may be black, gray, colored or light. Its color alone does not reliably identify the cause. It is more important to check which scanning method produces the line and whether its position remains the same when the job is repeated.

Step 1. Check the Printing Mechanism Without Scanning

First print a page generated by the MFP itself. During this type of printing, the scanner, ADF, computer and driver are not used.

  1. Load several new, dry sheets of plain A4 paper into the tray.
  2. Wait until the MFP reaches the ready state.
  3. Press the SETTING button on the control panel.
  4. Select Reports and press OK.
  5. Open the Print section.
  6. Select Color Tuning Pattern.
  7. Select Yes and press OK.
  8. Inspect the printed color pattern under good lighting.

How to Evaluate the Internal Pattern

  • The pattern is clean. The printing mechanism can produce a page without this line. Continue by comparing the platen glass and ADF.
  • The same line appears on the pattern. The cause is in the printing section: possible causes include a dirty LED head, low toner, image drum damage or another image formation defect. Cleaning the scanner glass will not remove this line.
  • The defect affects only one color. Check the unit for the corresponding color rather than the scanner.

Do not replace consumables before this test

If the internal Color Tuning Pattern prints without a line, the toner, image drum, transfer belt and LED heads are not the cause of a line that appears only on scans or copies made through the ADF.

Step 2. Compare Scanning from the Platen Glass and Through the ADF

For comparison, use the same flat, clean sheet with text. Do not use an original with a wet signature, correction fluid, glue or loose toner: it may contaminate the ADF glass again.

Make a Copy from the Platen Glass

  1. Remove all documents from the ADF.
  2. Open the document cover.
  3. Place the test sheet face down on the large rectangular platen glass, aligning it with the size mark.
  4. Close the cover completely.
  5. Press COPY.
  6. Start black-and-white or color copying.
  7. Label the resulting page: “Platen Glass”.

Make a Copy Through the ADF

  1. Remove the original from the platen glass and close the cover.
  2. Place the same sheet in the ADF face up, with the top edge entering first.
  3. Move the side guides against the edges of the sheet without bending it.
  4. Press COPY and start copying using the same settings.
  5. Label the second page: “ADF”.
  6. Place both copies side by side and compare the position of the line.

Step 3. Locate the Narrow ADF Glass

Users often clean only the large glass and overlook the separate narrow glass strip. Three surfaces are important for the ADF:

  • large document glass — used when scanning a book or individual sheet lying stationary;
  • narrow ADF glass — a long, narrow strip next to the edge of the large glass, over which the document from the automatic feeder passes;
  • white pressure surface — the area on the inside of the raised cover that is positioned opposite the narrow glass.

On most of the listed models, the narrow strip is located along the left edge of the large glass when viewing the MFP from the front. It is much narrower than the main glass. Inspect its entire length: a spot smaller than one millimeter can cause a continuous line.

  1. Finish copying and scanning.
  2. Remove documents from the ADF input and output trays.
  3. Lift the entire ADF unit like a normal flatbed scanner document cover.
  4. Locate the large rectangular glass.
  5. Locate the long narrow glass strip next to it.
  6. Check which white surface on the inside of the cover is directly above this strip when the cover is closed.

Do not confuse the narrow glass with a plastic guide, frame or transparent protective part inside the feed path. Cleaning a line from the image does not require opening the scanner unit housing.

Step 4. Safely Clean the ADF Glass

What You Will Need

  • two soft, clean, lint-free cloths;
  • a small amount of clean water;
  • a flashlight or another directional light source;
  • a clean white sheet for test scanning.

Cleaning Procedure

  1. Finish all jobs and shut down the MFP normally.
  2. Wait until the device turns off completely.
  3. Lift the document cover together with the ADF.
  4. Lightly dampen a soft, lint-free cloth with clean water.
  5. Wring the cloth out thoroughly. It should only be damp; no liquid should drip from it.
  6. Wipe the large glass from one edge to the other using straight strokes.
  7. Using a separate clean section of the cloth, wipe the narrow ADF glass several times along its entire length.
  8. Pay particular attention to the area corresponding to the position of the line on the scan.
  9. Wipe the white pressure surface opposite the narrow glass.
  10. Use a clean, dry, lint-free cloth to remove any remaining moisture and streaks.
  11. Shine a flashlight along the surface at a slight angle.
  12. Make sure no spots, cloth fibers, fingerprints or dried water streaks remain on the glass.
  13. Wait until all cleaned surfaces are completely dry.
  14. Close the cover and turn on the MFP.

Do not damage the glass or plastic

Do not spray water or cleaner onto the MFP. Do not use alcohol, gasoline, solvent, window cleaner, an abrasive sponge, blade, knife, needle or metal scraper. Do not attempt to disassemble the scanner and wipe the mirrors or scanner unit inside the housing.

If contamination has dried onto the glass, hold a slightly damp section of the cloth against it for several seconds, then gently wipe it again. Do not scrape the spot with a fingernail or hard object: a scratch on the narrow glass will create the same permanent line, but cleaning will no longer remove it.

Step 5. Check the Result with a Clean White Sheet

  1. Take a new clean sheet without text, folds or dirt.
  2. Load it into the ADF.
  3. Make a copy or save a scan to a file.
  4. Inspect the image at increased zoom.
  5. If the line has disappeared, repeat the test with a normal document.
  6. If the line becomes lighter, thinner or moves, clean the entire length of the narrow glass and the white surface again.
  7. If the line does not change at all, copy the same sheet again from the platen glass.

Do not rely only on looking at the glass from above under normal room lighting. Traces of correction fluid, glue or transparent contamination may become visible only under side lighting. It is useful to inspect the narrow strip from different angles without touching it with your fingers.

How to Find the Area That Needs to Be Checked Again

Measure the distance from the line to the left or right edge of the saved scan. Then carefully inspect the corresponding area along the narrow glass. The orientation of the sheet during feeding may reverse the left and right sides, so if you are unsure, clean the entire glass strip from edge to edge rather than only one spot.

Use a new test sheet each time. If a document with wet ink, correction fluid or glue is fed through the ADF, it may leave another mark on the already cleaned glass.

Step 6. When to Clean the ADF Paper Path and Rollers

A perfectly straight line in the same position is most often related to the narrow glass. Dirty rollers and guides usually produce different symptoms: smeared marks on the original and copy, short repeating marks, paper dust, skewing or feed problems.

Clean the ADF paper path as well if at least one of the following symptoms occurs:

  • dirty marks remain on the original itself after it passes through;
  • spots repeat at regular intervals;
  • the sheet feeds at an angle;
  • the ADF picks up multiple pages;
  • paper dust, toner or pieces of labels are visible inside.
  1. Turn off the MFP and remove the documents.
  2. Open the ADF top cover.
  3. Using a slightly damp, thoroughly wrung-out, lint-free cloth, wipe the accessible rollers, guide, rubber pad and rubber sheet.
  4. Rotate the rollers only in the normal document travel direction to clean their entire circumference.
  5. Do not stretch the rubber parts and do not apply liquid directly to the mechanism.
  6. Wait until everything is completely dry, close all covers and repeat the test with one sheet.

Cleaning the rollers does not replace cleaning the narrow glass. If the line remains perfectly straight and runs through the entire page in the same position, check the glass strip and the surface opposite it again.

Step 7. If the Line Appears Only in One Application

A persistent line on a copy made from the MFP control panel does not depend on Windows, macOS, the USB cable or the application. Reinstalling the driver is unnecessary in this case.

Check the software side only when:

  • copies made from the control panel do not contain the line;
  • scanning the same way in another application works normally;
  • the defect appears only after saving in a specific format or applying image processing.
  1. Scan the same document using the same source first in the application you normally use, then using another available method.
  2. Temporarily disable automatic background removal, sharpening, descreening and other filters.
  3. Select a standard color or grayscale mode and save the image without OCR.
  4. Compare the original files at the same zoom level.
  5. If the defect appears only in one application, reset its scanning settings or create a new profile.
  6. Only after confirming a software-related cause should you repair or reinstall the corresponding application and scanner driver.

Do not update the MFP firmware only because of a straight line that appears when copying through the ADF. Dirt or a scratch on the glass cannot be fixed by an update.

Step 8. If the Line Also Appears When Scanning from the Platen Glass

When the internal Color Tuning Pattern is clean but the line appears in saved scans both from the platen glass and through the ADF, perform an additional check:

  1. Clean the entire large glass and the narrow strip again, then dry them completely.
  2. Place a clean white sheet on the platen glass and close the cover.
  3. Save a color scan to a file.
  4. Rotate the original sheet 180 degrees and scan it again.
  5. Compare the position of the line in the two files.
  • The line remains at the same image coordinate. A problem with the scanner unit, its optics, calibration or connection is likely.
  • The mark rotates together with the original. Check the sheet itself: the line may be present on the original document.
  • The line changes when the cover is pressed. Check whether the cover closes completely and whether the white pressure surface is dirty. Do not press the cover by hand during normal scanning.

Do not enter the hidden service menu to randomly run calibration procedures. Incorrectly changing service settings may create additional defects and make subsequent diagnostics more difficult.

When Scanner Repair Is Required

Stop cleaning the scanner yourself and contact service support if at least one of the following conditions occurs:

  • a scratch, chip or crack is visible on the narrow or large glass at the location corresponding to the line;
  • after several careful cleanings, the line remains completely unchanged on scans made through the ADF;
  • the line is present in saved files both when using the ADF and when scanning from the platen glass;
  • a wide colored or black area appears, part of the image is missing, or the line flickers and changes width;
  • the scanner unit moves unevenly, stops, makes an unusual noise or the MFP reports a scanner error;
  • contamination is located on the inside of the glass and cannot be reached without disassembling the housing;
  • damage to the ribbon cable, hinges or scanner unit housing is visible.

In these cases, the glass, scanner unit, optical assembly, cable or scanner board may be damaged. Do not remove the glass or clean the internal mirrors yourself: even a small shift in the optics can affect the geometry and color of the entire image.
