If the OKI MC352, MC362 or MC562 has stopped and displays Paper Jam, first press the ?HELP button and write down the numeric code. It indicates where the device detected paper: under the transfer belt, inside the printer, near the multipurpose tray, in the cassette or at the rear output. Do not pull out the first visible sheet at random — part of the paper may tear off and remain inside.
If the visible sheet has already been removed but the message does not disappear, do not reinstall the driver or reset the MFP settings. As long as the code is displayed on the device’s own control panel, the cause is in the paper path, the position of internal units, a cover or a sensor. Neither Windows nor the printer driver can clear such a code.
Where to start
Press ?HELP, write down the code and check the corresponding area using the table below. After removing the paper, look at the display again: if a different code appears, another sheet remains inside and you need to move to the newly indicated area.
Models This Guide Applies To
The disassembly procedure and location of the main components apply to the following color MFPs:
- OKI MC332dn;
- OKI MC342dn and MC342dw;
- OKI MC352dn;
- OKI MC362dn and MC362w;
- OKI MC562dn, MC562w and MC562dw;
- OKI ES3452 MFP;
- OKI ES5462 MFP and ES5462dw MFP;
- OKI MPS2731mc.
The same paper path layout is used in the MC351, MC361, MC561, ES3451 and ES5461 models. Do not use the error-code table from similar but newer MC563, MC573, C532 or C542 models: on another series, the same code may indicate a different part of the printer.
What the Paper Jam Codes Mean

The numbers between the listed codes are not used consecutively. For example, the absence of code 374 from the table does not mean that part of the instructions is missing.
Before Removing the Paper
- Stop sending new print jobs.
- Wait until all mechanisms stop completely.
- Press ?HELP and write down the code. Do not rely only on where the edge of the sheet is visible.
- Remove documents from the ADF and platen glass so they do not fall when the scanner unit is lifted.
- Prepare a flat surface nearby and place several clean sheets of paper on it. They will be needed for temporarily placing the image drum.
- Prepare opaque paper or a black bag to cover the removed image drum.
The fuser may be very hot
Do not touch the unit with the warning label. If paper is inside the fuser, wait for it to cool down. Hold only the designated handle and the blue levers. Do not speed up cooling with water or other liquids.
Do not pull the paper by force
If the sheet does not come out with light force, stop and release it from the side of the indicated unit. Do not use a knife, screwdriver, sharp-edged tweezers or another hard object: you may damage the transfer belt, fuser or sensor flag.
Errors 370, 371 and 372: Paper Under the Transfer Belt
These codes require checking the paper path under the belt. Simply removing a sheet from the tray is usually not enough.
Step 1. Open the Upper Part of the MFP
- Hold the scanner unit handle and carefully lift it.
- Press the OPEN button or lever that releases the printer’s top cover.
- Fully open the top cover.
- Do not touch the fuser area at the rear.
Step 2. Remove the Combined Image Drum Unit
- Locate the two handles on the combined CMYK Image Drum.
- Hold both handles at the same time.
- Lift the assembly vertically without tilting it and without holding it by the toner cartridges.
- Place the unit on clean, flat paper.
- Cover it with opaque paper or place it in a black bag.
Do not touch the green cylinders on the underside of the unit. Do not leave the image drum exposed to room lighting for more than five minutes.
Step 3. Remove the Transfer Belt
- Locate the locking levers on both sides of the belt.
- Pull both levers upward and toward the front of the MFP.
- Using the levers as handles, lift the belt evenly.
- Remove it without tilting and place it on a clean, flat surface.
- Inspect the area under the belt and the entire visible duplex paper path.
- Remove complete sheets and all torn fragments. Pull the paper slowly with both hands so it does not tear again.
Step 4. Reinstall the Belt and Image Drum
- Orient the belt so that the drive gear is at the rear.
- Align the gear with the drive in the rear-right corner inside the printer.
- Lower the belt horizontally. One side must not sit higher than the other.
- Rotate both locking levers toward the rear of the device to secure the belt.
- Remove the protection from the image drum and hold it by both handles.
- Install the unit so that the black toner K is at the front.
- Align the side pins with the slots and lower the assembly vertically.
- Close the top cover and press down on both sides until the latches engage.
- Carefully lower the scanner unit.
If an image drum or transfer belt installation error appears after reassembly, open the MFP again and check the position of both sides. Do not force a misaligned unit into place by closing the cover.
Errors 380, 381, 382 and 385: Paper Inside the Printer
For these codes, check the belt surface, the entrance to the fuser, the fuser itself and the output area. A single sheet may pass through several zones, so inspect all of them.
Step 1. Remove the Image Drum
- Lift the scanner unit.
- Press OPEN and fully open the top cover.
- Remove the combined image drum unit using both handles.
- Place it on clean paper and immediately cover it from light.
Step 2. Check the Transfer Belt
- Check whether the sheet is lying in the center of the belt.
- If the sheet is lying freely, carefully lift it by hand and remove it.
- If the leading edge of the sheet is near the front of the printer, lift the plastic guide and pull the paper forward into the internal cavity.
- Do not scratch the belt surface or press it with your fingers.
Step 3. Release Paper Before the Fuser
- If the sheet is only entering the fuser and a wide enough edge is visible, locate the pressure release lever.
- Move the lever forward and downward.
- Holding the released sheet with both hands, slowly pull it toward the internal cavity.
- Release the lever and make sure it returns to its original position.
If only a narrow strip of paper is visible from the fuser, do not pull it. The sheet must first be released from inside the unit itself.
Step 4. Remove Paper from the Fuser
- Make sure the unit has cooled sufficiently.
- Locate the two blue fuser locking levers.
- Move both levers toward the front of the MFP.
- Hold the designated handle and lift the fuser vertically.
- Place it on a flat, heat-resistant surface.
- Press the paper release lever on the fuser itself.
- Slowly remove the sheet without rotating or spreading the rollers with a tool.
- Check that no torn fragments remain inside.
- Reinstall the fuser using its handle.
- Move both blue locking levers toward the rear of the MFP.
Step 5. Check the Rear Path and Reassemble the MFP
- Open the rear Face-Up Stacker.
- Inspect the output paper path and remove any remaining sheets.
- If the paper is low in the path and held by the fuser, do not pull it from the rear. Open the top cover again and use the pressure release lever.
- Close the rear stacker if it is not required for the current paper type.
- Install the image drum with black toner K facing the front.
- Close the top cover securely on both sides.
- Lower the scanner unit.
Error 390: Jam Near the Multipurpose Tray
- Remove any unfed sheets from the multipurpose tray.
- Lift the scanner unit.
- Press OPEN and fully open the top cover.
- Remove the image drum using both handles, place it on clean paper and cover it from light.
- Locate the plastic guide at the front of the printer.
- Carefully lift the guide.
- Hold the visible edge of the paper and slowly remove the sheet.
- Inspect the area under the guide for small torn fragments.
- Return the guide to its original position.
- Install the image drum with black toner K facing the front.
- Close the top cover until it latches and lower the scanner.
Before printing again, fan the stack, align the edges and readjust the side guides of the multipurpose tray. After loading, raise the paper platform using the designated locking button.
Errors 391 and 392: Jam in Tray 1 or Tray 2
Code 391 refers to Tray 1, while 392 refers to optional Tray 2. The procedure is the same.
- Slowly pull out the cassette for the tray indicated on the display.
- If the sheet extends clearly from the printer and comes out without resistance, hold it with both hands and pull it straight out.
- If the paper does not come out easily, do not pull it. Lift the scanner, open the top cover and raise the plastic guide at the front of the internal paper path.
- Remove the jammed sheet from the internal cavity side.
- Check whether the removed sheet is complete. If a corner or edge is missing, find the fragment before reassembling the printer.
- Remove wrinkled, curled, damp or stuck-together sheets from the cassette.
- Fan the remaining stack and align its edges.
- Check that the paper is under the retaining tabs and does not exceed the maximum fill mark.
- Move the side guides and rear stop against the paper. They should touch the stack without bending it.
- Push the cassette fully back into the printer.
- Even if the paper was removed from the cassette side, open and firmly close the top cover again. Press both sides so that the latches engage.
- Lower the scanner unit and check the display.
If code 391 or 392 does not disappear after removing the paper, the most commonly missed final step is that the top cover was not opened and closed again, or it closed on only one side.
Error 400: Paper Size Error
Code 400 may appear without a normally crumpled sheet. The device has detected that the length of the fed paper does not match the expected size, or that two sheets were fed at the same time.
Step 1. Check the Paper and Guides
- Remove the indicated tray.
- Compare the actual paper size with the job size: for example, A4 cannot be replaced with Letter without changing the setting.
- Remove double-fed, stuck-together or wrinkled sheets.
- Fan the stack and align it.
- Set the rear stop exactly to the mark for the paper size being used.
- Move the side guides against the stack.
- Reinstall the cassette.
Step 2. Register the Paper in the MFP
- Press SETTING on the control panel.
- Use the down arrow button to select Paper Setup and press Enter or OK.
- Select Tray 1, Tray 2 or MP Tray.
- Open Paper Size and select the size that is actually loaded.
- Open Media Type and select the media type.
- Open Media Weight and select the appropriate weight.
- Use the left arrow button to exit the menu.
Step 3. Check the Job Settings
- Open the print dialog in the application you are using.
- Select the required OKI printer.
- Open the print properties or settings.
- Set the same paper size that is loaded in the selected tray.
- Check the paper source, media type and media weight.
- After correcting the settings, open and close the MFP top cover to resume printing.
Do not select A4 only on the computer while leaving Letter in the MFP menu, or vice versa. All three values — the paper in the cassette, the tray setting and the job size — must match.
Error 409: Jam at the Rear Output
- Open the rear Face-Up Stacker.
- Inspect the visible part of the rear paper path.
- If the sheet comes out freely, hold it with both hands and slowly remove it.
- If the paper is low in the path and does not move, do not pull it from the rear.
- Lift the scanner unit and open the top cover.
- Locate the fuser pressure release lever and move it downward.
- After releasing the pressure, carefully remove the paper from the accessible side.
- Return the lever to its original position.
- Close the top cover until the latches engage.
- If the rear stacker is no longer required, close it.
- Lower the scanner unit.
If the Paper Has Been Removed but Paper Jam Does Not Disappear
- Press ?HELP again. The code may have changed after the first sheet was removed. Check the newly indicated area instead of repeating the same steps.
- Inspect the removed paper. All four corners and all edges should be intact. Any missing fragment, even a small one, must be found inside.
- Check all sheets from the job. During multipage printing, one sheet may be near the tray while another is near the belt or output.
- Check the area under the belt. For codes 370–372, a sheet may be completely hidden and not visible after removing only the image drum.
- Check the fuser and rear path. A sheet near the output may remain clamped by the pressure mechanism.
- Check the transfer belt installation. Both sides must sit horizontally, the drive gear must be at the rear, and both levers must be locked.
- Check the image drum. The unit must be lowered into the side slots, with black toner K at the front.
- Close the top cover again. Lift the scanner, fully open the cover, then close it and press both sides until it clicks.
- Do not reset the settings. A reset may remove network, e-mail and fax settings, but it will not release a mechanical sensor.
If the code appears immediately after the device is turned on even though paper has not started feeding, or remains after the corresponding paper path has been fully inspected, a stuck sensor flag, worn roller, faulty drive or damaged sensor may be the cause. Do not press sensor flags with a screwdriver and do not try to simulate the presence of paper. Further inspection will require service.
If Paper Jams Keep Occurring
Check the Paper Condition and Loading
- Use flat, dry paper without curled corners.
- Do not mix different sizes, types or weights in the same cassette.
- Before loading, fan the stack and align it on a flat surface.
- Do not exceed the PAPER FULL mark.
- Place the stack under the retaining tabs.
- Do not leave a gap between the stack, side guides and rear stop.
- Do not press the guides so tightly that the paper bends.
- Do not pull out Tray 1 while printing from Tray 2.
- Do not open or close the rear output while printing.
Choose the Correct Paper Path for Heavy Paper

For paper heavier than 176 g/m², use the nearly straight paper path: MP Tray → Face-Up Stacker. Do not send such paper to the top output and do not enable automatic duplex printing.
Clean the Feed Rollers
If errors 390, 391 or 392 repeatedly occur in the same tray even though the paper is loaded correctly, paper dust and a smooth coating may have built up on the rubber rollers.
- Finish all jobs and shut down the MFP normally.
- Wait until the indicators turn off, then disconnect the power cable.
- Remove the corresponding cassette and take out the paper.
- Locate the rubber rollers in the upper part of the tray cavity.
- Wipe the accessible surface with a soft, lint-free cloth slightly moistened with water and thoroughly wrung out.
- Carefully rotate the roller with your finger and clean its entire circumference.
- Do not use alcohol, solvent, oil or abrasive cleaner.
- Wait until the rollers are completely dry.
- Load good paper, reinstall the cassette and turn on the MFP.
If the roller is hardened, shiny, cracked or still slips after cleaning, it needs to be replaced. Continually pushing a sheet by hand may cause skewing and another paper tear.
When to Stop Troubleshooting Yourself
Contact service support if at least one of the following conditions applies:
- the code appears immediately after power-on with an empty paper path;
- the same code returns after the specifically indicated area has been checked;
- a sensor flag is broken, misaligned or does not return by itself;
- paper is deep inside the fuser and cannot be released using the designated lever;
- damage to the transfer belt, guides, rollers or gears is visible;
- after the jam, a new cracking or grinding noise, overheating smell or fuser error appears;
- removing the paper would require disassembling the case beyond the steps described above.
Before contacting service support, write down the model, numeric code, tray, paper type and when the error occurs: during pickup, inside the paper path, during duplex printing or at the output. This information will help identify the faulty area more quickly and avoid unnecessary replacement of other components.
