How to Install the Canon PIXMA MG3600 Series Driver via USB on Windows 11 and Windows 10

Last Updated on 22.07.2026 by DriverNew

To print and scan with a Canon PIXMA MG3600 series device via USB, you need to install the official MP Drivers package. It contains the printer driver, scanner driver, and the necessary Canon programs.

This guide applies to the following models:

Canon PIXMA MG3610, MG3620, MG3640, MG3640S, MG3650, MG3650S, MG3660, MG3670, and MG3680.

Model names vary depending on the country where the device is sold. All the devices listed above belong to the Canon PIXMA MG3600 series family and use the same driver package.

Do not connect the USB cable until prompted by the installer

Before starting the program, disconnect the multifunction printer’s USB cable from the computer. Connect it only after the “Connect Cable” window appears. If you connect the device to the computer earlier, Windows may attempt to install an incomplete or unsuitable driver.

What you will need for the installation

  • a Canon PIXMA MG3600 series multifunction printer;
  • a computer or laptop running Windows 11 or Windows 10;
  • a printer USB cable;
  • the Canon MG3600 series MP Drivers installation file;
  • a Windows account with administrator privileges.

A USB-A–to–USB-B printer cable is usually used for the connection:

  • the flat USB-A connector connects to the computer;
  • the almost square USB-B connector connects to the port on the back of the multifunction printer.

Connect the multifunction printer directly to a USB port on the computer. Using a USB hub or extension cable during installation is not recommended.

What the MP Drivers package installs

The official MP Drivers package contains the main components required to use Canon MG3600 series:

  • the printer driver;
  • ScanGear — the scanner driver;
  • IJ Scan Utility for scanning from the computer;
  • Canon network components that may be used when configuring Wi-Fi.

This article covers a permanent USB connection. After installation, the cable must remain connected to the computer during printing and scanning.

USB installation and temporary connection for Wi-Fi setup are different methods

When “Connect the printer via USB port” is selected, the cable is used permanently.

During wireless installation, the USB cable may sometimes be connected only temporarily to transfer wireless network settings to the multifunction printer. This method is covered in a separate guide.

Step 1. Download Canon MG3600 series MP Drivers

  1. Open the official Canon page:
    Download Canon MG3600 series MP Drivers
  2. Find the download button on the page.
  3. If necessary, confirm that you agree to the software terms of use.
  4. Start downloading the file.
  5. If the browser asks where to save the file, select the Downloads folder.
  6. Wait until the download is complete.

Check the downloaded filename

The filename should begin with:

m68n-win-mg3600-

The final part of the filename may change after an updated package is released. When checking, pay attention to the beginning of the filename and the MG3600 series designation.

Do not use a package for another series

MG3600 series models require a file whose name begins with m68n-win-mg3600-.

Do not use drivers for MG3500, MG2400, MG2500, TS3600, or other similar Canon series.

Step 2. Prepare the multifunction printer and computer

  1. Close Microsoft Word, PDF viewers, browsers, and other running applications.
  2. If the USB cable is already connected to the computer, disconnect it.
  3. Turn off the multifunction printer using the power button.
  4. Leave the power cable connected to the electrical outlet.
  5. Do not reconnect the USB cable yet.

The installation should be performed from a Windows account with administrator privileges.

If Windows has already added the printer automatically

If the USB cable was connected earlier, Canon MG3600 series, an unknown printer, or the “Driver is unavailable” message may already appear under Printers & scanners.

Before reinstalling, it is recommended to remove the automatically added entry.

Windows 11

  1. Click the Start button.
  2. Open Settings.
  3. Go to Bluetooth & devices.
  4. Open Printers & scanners.

  2. Copy the installation file from the Downloads folder to the desktop.
  3. Right-click the copy.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Confirm that you want to run the program.

If the file still does not run, download it again from the official Canon website.

Step 4. Continue the installation in the “Welcome” window

After the files are extracted, the “Welcome” window will open.

The program warns that the printer’s USB cable must be disconnected from the computer before installation.

  1. Make sure that the USB cable is disconnected from the computer.
  2. Change the installer language if necessary.
  3. Click Next >.

How to change the installer language

The package supports multiple languages. The program language can be selected in the first installation window.

  1. In the “Welcome” window, click Language.
  2. Select the required language.
  3. Confirm your selection.

If you click No, the installation program will close and the driver will not be installed.

Step 6. Select the USB connection

After the license agreement, the “Connection Method” window will open.

Two options are available:

  • Connect the printer to the wireless LAN;
  • Connect the printer via USB port.

For installation using this guide:

  1. Select Connect the printer via USB port.
  2. Make sure that the selection mark is next to this option.
  3. Click Next >.

Select the correct connection method

For permanent operation through a cable, select “Connect the printer via USB port”. If you select wireless LAN, the installer will begin searching for the device on the network and will open different windows.

Step 7. Wait for the “Connect Cable” window

The installer will begin copying the required files. After a while, the “Connect Cable” window will appear.

The program will ask you to:

  • connect the multifunction printer and computer using a USB cable;
  • turn on the multifunction printer;
  • wait for the device to be detected.

Before this window appears:

  • do not connect the USB cable;
  • do not turn on the multifunction printer;

  5. Wait until the power lamp lights up.
  6. Wait for the installer to detect the device.

Detection may take several minutes. After the multifunction printer has been detected successfully, the “Connect Cable” window should close automatically.

Do not interrupt the installation

Do not click Cancel, turn off the multifunction printer, or disconnect the cable while the installer is waiting to detect the device.

If the procedure was canceled or interrupted, close the installer, restart the computer, and start the installation again.

Step 9. Complete the installation

After detecting the multifunction printer, the program will install and register the printer and scanner drivers.

  1. Do not disconnect the USB cable.
  2. Do not turn off the multifunction printer.
  3. Wait for the successful completion message.
  4. Click the button that completes the installation.
  5. If the program prompts you to restart the computer, save any open documents and restart it.

If IJ Scan Utility is not displayed

  1. Open the Start menu.
  2. Open the list of installed apps.
  3. Find the Canon Utilities folder.
  4. Open it.
  5. Start IJ Scan Utility.

If the program is also missing from the Canon Utilities folder, the installation may not have completed fully. Disconnect the USB cable, remove MP Drivers, and repeat the installation.

If the multifunction printer was previously used via Wi-Fi

Simply connecting the USB cable may not be enough. The driver and scanning program may continue using the previous network connection.

To switch from Wi-Fi to USB:

  1. Disconnect the USB cable.
  2. Remove the old Canon MG3600 series MP Drivers package.
  3. Restart the computer.
  4. Run the installer again.
  5. In the “Connection Method” window, select Connect the printer via USB port.
  6. Connect the cable only after the “Connect Cable” window appears.

If the installer does not detect the multifunction printer via USB

If the “Connect Cable” window remains on the screen for more than several minutes:

  1. Make sure that the multifunction printer is turned on.
  2. Check whether the error lamp is lit.
  3. Insert the cable firmly into the port on the back of the multifunction printer.
  4. Disconnect the cable from the computer.
  5. Wait approximately 10 seconds.
  6. Connect the cable to another USB port.
  7. If you are using a desktop computer, try a USB port on the back of the computer case.
  8. Do not use a hub, extension cable, or docking station.
  9. If another working printer cable is available, try replacing the cable.
  10. Wait another few minutes.

If the device is still not detected:

  1. Click Cancel.
  2. Close the installer.
  3. Turn off the multifunction printer.
  4. Disconnect the USB cable.
  5. Restart the computer.
  6. Start the installation again from the beginning.

Start the procedure again after an interrupted installation

Simply disconnecting and reconnecting the USB cable does not complete an unfinished process. First close the installer, restart the computer, and run the installation file again.

If you are using a USB-C adapter

A USB-C–to–USB-A adapter may be required on a modern laptop without a standard USB port.

If the multifunction printer is not detected:

  1. Connect the adapter to another USB-C port.
  2. Do not use a complex docking station with many connected devices.
  3. Try a simple USB-C–to–USB-A adapter.
  4. If another adapter is available, test it.
  5. If possible, test the multifunction printer on a computer with a standard USB port.

Important information for computers with ARM processors

The standard USB driver may not work on Windows 11 ARM

On laptops with Qualcomm Snapdragon X Elite, Snapdragon X Plus, or Microsoft SQ processors, the installer may not detect the multifunction printer or may fail to install the scanner driver.

This USB guide is intended primarily for computers with Intel and AMD processors. An ARM device may require a network connection and the use of built-in Windows printing features.

To check the computer type:

  1. Right-click the Start button.
  2. Select System.
  3. Find the System type line.

If the system description shows ARM or ARM64, the failed USB installation may be caused by driver incompatibility.
