Canon TS9540, TS9550, and TS9551C Will Not Print on A3 Paper: Support Code 2114 and Incorrect Paper Source Selection

When you try to print a document on A3 paper, the Canon TS9500 Series printer may stop printing and display support code 2114. In some cases, no error code appears, but the printer reports that the paper size or type does not match the print job settings.

This guide applies to the following models:

• Canon PIXMA TS9540;
• Canon PIXMA TS9540A;
• Canon PIXMA TS9541C;
• Canon PIXMA TS9550;
• Canon PIXMA TS9550A;
• Canon PIXMA TS9551C;
• Canon PIXMA TS9551CA.

All the devices listed above belong to the Canon TS9500 series and use the same paper settings in the driver.

Why Support Code 2114 Appears

Support code 2114 means that the print settings do not match the paper settings registered for the rear tray.

For example:

• A3 is selected in the application, but A4 is registered on the printer’s screen;
• plain paper is loaded in the rear tray, but photo paper is selected in the driver;
• A3 is selected on the printer, but the document is sent as A4;
• A3 paper is loaded correctly, but Cassette is selected as the paper source in the driver;
• the user did not update the paper information on the touchscreen after replacing the paper;
• the application used for printing applies its own paper settings.

Support code 2114 usually does not indicate a printer malfunction. You need to check three things:

1. the paper that is actually loaded in the printer;
2. the paper information displayed on the printer’s touchscreen;
3. the paper settings in the application and the Canon driver.

What to Select on the Screen When Support Code 2114 Appears

When support code 2114 appears, tap Next on the touchscreen. The printer will offer several options.

Print with the Loaded Paper

Select this option if suitable paper is already loaded in the rear tray and you want to continue printing without changing the registered settings.

Use this command carefully. If A3 is selected for the print job but A4 is actually loaded, part of the image may be printed incorrectly.

Replace the Paper and Print

Select this option if paper of the wrong size or type is loaded in the rear tray.

1. Remove the paper from the rear tray.
2. Load the paper specified in the print job.
3. Select the correct size on the touchscreen.
4. Select the correct paper type.
5. Confirm the settings.
6. Continue printing.

Cancel Printing

This is the safest option if you are not sure which settings are selected.

After canceling, open the print settings on the computer, select the correct paper size, paper type, and rear tray, and then send the document again.

How to Load A3 Paper Correctly

Step 1: Prepare the Paper

1. Use flat sheets without curled corners.
2. If the paper is curled, flatten it carefully.
3. Align the edges of the stack.

For testing, it is recommended that you load one or several sheets first. Do not fill the tray to its maximum capacity.

Step 2: Open the Rear Tray

1. Open the rear tray cover.
2. Raise the paper support.
3. Open the feed slot cover.
4. Slide the paper guides apart.

Step 3: Load the Paper

1. Place the A3 paper in the rear tray.
2. Load the sheets with the short edge facing forward.
3. The print side must face up.
4. Slide the left and right paper guides against the edges of the paper.
5. The guides should touch the paper without bending it.
6. Slowly close the feed slot cover.

Step 4: Register the Paper on the Printer’s Screen

After you close the feed slot cover, a paper settings confirmation screen will appear on the touchscreen.

1. For the paper size, select A3.
2. Select the type of paper that is loaded.

For standard office paper, select:

Plain Paper

For photo paper, select the exact paper name or the most appropriate photo paper type.

3. Check the selected settings.
4. Tap Yes or OK.

If A4 or another size is shown on the screen, select Change and specify A3.

Step 5: Open the Paper Output Tray

1. Raise the printer’s operation panel.
2. Pull out the paper output tray.
3. Extend the paper output support.

If the operation panel is closed, the printer may not start printing.

How to Select A3 in the Canon Driver

Check the settings immediately before sending the document to the printer.

1. Open the document or image.
2. Click File.
3. Select Print.
4. From the printer list, select Canon TS9500 series.
5. Click Printer properties, Settings, or Preferences.

The button name depends on the application you are using.

Settings for Standard A3 Printing

1. Open the Quick Setup tab.
2. For Media Type, select Plain Paper.
3. For Printer Paper Size, select A3.
4. For Paper Source, select Rear Tray.
5. Select the required print quality.
6. Click OK.
7. Click Print.

If the Paper Source Setting Is Not Visible

1. Open the Main tab.
2. Select the correct Media Type.
3. For Paper Source, select Rear Tray.
4. Open the Page Setup tab.
5. For Page Size or Printer Paper Size, select A3.
6. Click OK.

How to Print an A4 Document on A3 Paper

If the original document was created in A4 format but needs to be enlarged to A3, selecting only A3 in the printer properties is not enough.

1. Open the Canon driver properties window.
2. Go to the Page Setup tab.
3. For Page Size, keep A4 selected.
4. For Printer Paper Size, select A3.
5. Select Fit-to-Page or Scaled printing.
6. Check the print preview.
7. Click OK.
8. Start printing.

The driver will enlarge the A4 content to fit the A3 paper.

If A3 Is Not Available in the Application

In some applications, the page size is configured separately from the printer driver.

Check the document settings:

1. Open Layout, Page Setup, or Page Size.
2. Select A3.
3. Select portrait or landscape orientation.
4. Open the print window again.
5. In the Canon properties, also select A3.
6. Select the rear tray.

The page size in the application and the paper size in the driver should match unless scaling is being used intentionally.

Printing an A3 Document from Microsoft Word

1. Open the document in Microsoft Word.
2. Open the Layout tab.
3. Click Size.
4. Select A3.
5. If necessary, click Orientation and select Landscape.
6. Click File → Print.
7. Select Canon TS9500 series.
8. Click Printer Properties.
9. Select A3 as the paper size.
10. Select Rear Tray.
11. Specify the paper type.
12. Click OK.
13. Click Print.

Printing a PDF on A3 Paper

1. Open the PDF file.
2. Click File → Print.
3. Select Canon TS9500 series.
4. Click Properties.
5. Select A3 and the rear tray.
6. Return to the main print window.

Next, select one of the following options:

• Actual size — if the PDF pages are already A3;
• Fit — if the page needs to be enlarged or reduced to A3;
• Shrink oversized pages — if only pages larger than A3 need to be reduced.

7. Check the print preview.
8. Click Print.

If the Printer Takes Paper from the Cassette

This happens if the wrong paper source or automatic paper source selection is enabled in the driver.

1. Cancel the current print job.
2. Open the print window again.
3. Open the Canon TS9500 series properties.
4. Find the Paper Source setting.
5. Instead of Automatically Select, select Rear Tray.
6. Check that A3 is selected.
7. Click OK.
8. Send the document again.

A3 paper cannot be fed from the front cassette.

If Support Code 2114 Appears During Copying

When copying, the paper settings are selected on the printer’s touchscreen.

1. Tap Stop if the message has already appeared.
2. On the Home screen, select Copy.
3. Open the copy settings.
4. For the paper size, select A3.
5. Select the correct paper type.
6. Make sure A3 paper is loaded in the rear tray.
7. Check the registered paper information for the rear tray.
8. Start copying again.

Why Automatic A3 Duplex Printing Is Unavailable

Automatic duplex printing is not supported for A3 paper.

Automatic two-sided printing is available only for supported paper sizes, including A4, A5, B5, and Letter.

To print on both sides of an A3 sheet:

1. Print the first side.
2. Wait until the ink is completely dry.
3. Turn the sheet over correctly.
4. Load it back into the rear tray.
5. Print the second side.

Before printing on expensive paper, check the loading direction using a sheet of plain paper.

If A3 Paper Does Not Feed

1. Cancel printing.
2. Remove the paper.
3. Check the rear tray for foreign objects.
4. Align the sheets.
5. Load the paper with the short edge facing forward.
6. Do not press the paper guides too tightly against the paper.
7. Close the feed slot cover.
8. Register A3 as the paper size.
9. Try printing again.

If you are using thick paper or photo paper, load one sheet at a time.

If A3 Is Missing from the Paper Size List

First, make sure the Canon driver is being used rather than the standard Windows driver.

1. Open Settings.
2. Open Printers & scanners.
3. Select Canon TS9500 series.
4. Open Printer properties.
5. Check the driver name.

When installing via USB, do not connect the cable until the installer asks you to do so.

Disabling Paper Setting Mismatch Detection Is Not Recommended

The Canon settings allow you to disable the paper mismatch warning. After that, support code 2114 may no longer appear.

However, inexperienced users are not advised to disable this check. Without the warning, the printer may start printing on paper of the wrong size or type.

It is better to select the following settings correctly:

• the paper size in the application;
• the paper size in the driver;
• the media type;
• the paper source;
• the paper information on the touchscreen.

Quick Check Before Printing on A3 Paper

1. A3 paper is loaded in the rear tray.
2. The print side is facing up.
3. The paper is loaded with the short edge facing forward.
4. A3 is selected on the printer’s screen.
5. The correct paper type is selected on the screen.
6. A3 is selected in the application.
7. A3 is selected in the Canon driver.
8. The rear tray is selected as the paper source.
9. The operation panel is raised.
10. The paper output tray is extended.

If all the settings match, support code 2114 should not appear.
