Official troubleshooting and fix methods

If Epson L5290 does not print after driver installation

Step 1. Restart the printer and the computer

  1. Turn the printer off with the power button.
  2. If the printer is connected by USB, do not disconnect the USB cable.
  3. Disconnect only the printer power cable from the outlet for 30 seconds.
  4. Plug the power cable back in.
  5. Turn the printer on.
  6. Restart the computer.

Step 2. If the printer is connected by USB, connect it directly to the computer

  1. Make sure the USB cable is firmly connected both to the printer and to the computer.
  2. If the printer is connected through a USB hub or splitter, disconnect it.
  3. Connect the printer directly to a USB port on the computer.
  4. If that does not help, move the cable to another USB port.
  5. If you have another USB cable, try it.

Step 3. Make Epson L5290 the default printer

Windows 11:
Start > Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.

Windows 10:
Start > Settings > Devices > Printers & scanners.

  1. Find Epson L5290.
  2. Open that printer page.
  3. Click Set as default, if that button is available.

If the button is not available, find the switch Let Windows manage my default printer and turn it off. Then select Epson L5290 again and click Set as default.

Step 4. Check whether offline mode is enabled

  1. Open the print queue window.
  2. At the top of the window, click Printer.
  3. Make sure Work Offline and Pause Printing are turned off.

If there is a check mark next to either item, click it to disable that mode.

Step 5. Open the print queue and remove everything unnecessary

Windows 11:
Start > Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners > Epson L5290 > Open print queue.

Windows 10:
Start > Settings > Devices > Printers & scanners > Epson L5290 > Open queue.

  1. If documents are listed, delete all of them.
  2. Wait 10 to 15 seconds.
  3. Try printing one simple document.

Step 6. Restart the Windows print service

  1. Press Win + R.
  2. Type services.msc.
  3. Press Enter.
  4. Find Print Spooler in the list.
  5. Right-click that entry.
  6. Select Restart.

Step 7. If the printer is connected by USB, check where Windows is sending the print job

  1. Press Win + R.
  2. Type control printers.
  3. Press Enter.
  4. In the window that opens, right-click Epson L5290.
  5. Select Printer properties.
  6. Open the Ports tab.

For a USB connection, one of these is usually the correct choice:

  • USB001;
  • USB002;
  • or another port labeled USB Virtual Printer Port.

If LPT1 is selected, that is usually the wrong setting for this printer.

  1. Select the correct USB port.
  2. Click Apply.
  3. Click OK.
  4. Try printing again.

Step 8. If necessary, remove the printer and add it again

Windows 11:
Start > Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.

Windows 10:
Start > Settings > Devices > Printers & scanners.

  1. Select Epson L5290.
  2. Click Remove.
  3. Restart the computer.
  4. Connect the printer again by USB, Wi-Fi, or Ethernet.
  5. Add the printer again through Printers & scanners.

If printing over Wi-Fi or Ethernet does not work

  1. Make sure the printer is turned on.
  2. Check the network icon on the printer screen.
  3. If you use Wi-Fi, make sure the computer and printer are connected to the same network.
  4. If you use Ethernet, make sure the network cable is firmly connected and the router or switch is on.
  5. If the router works only on the 5 GHz band, enable 2.4 GHz or dual band mode.
  6. If the router uses one network name for 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz, give the two bands different names if possible.
  7. Check whether the router has Privacy Separator or a similar device isolation feature enabled.
  8. Restart the router.

Important: Ethernet and Wi-Fi cannot be used at the same time. If you are setting up Wi-Fi, disconnect the network cable. If you want to use Ethernet, turn off Wi-Fi in the printer settings.

How to connect the printer using WPS

  1. Press the WPS button on the router.
  2. On the printer, press Home.
  3. Select Wi-Fi Setup.
  4. Select Push Button Setup (WPS).
  5. Follow the prompts on the printer screen.

If the connection is successful, a blue Wi-Fi icon appears on the screen.

How to print a network status sheet

  1. Press Home.
  2. Select Settings > Network Settings > Print Status Sheet.
  3. Press Start.

You can check the printer IP address and the current network status on this sheet.

How to print a network connection report

  1. Press Home.
  2. Select Settings > Network Settings > Connection Check.
  3. Press Start.

The report may show error codes and network setup tips.

If network scanning does not work

  1. Make sure the printer is connected to the same network as the computer.
  2. Print a network status sheet and check the printer IP address.
  3. Open the Start menu and launch Epson Scan 2 Utility.
  4. Check whether Epson L5290 is selected in the program.
  5. If needed, open the Other tab and click Reset.
  6. After that, launch Epson Scan 2 again.

If Epson Scan 2 does not start

Epson Scan 2 is usually installed together with the scanner driver or from the driver and utility package for the device.

After installation, these programs usually appear:

  • Epson Scan 2 — the main scanning program.
  • Epson Scan 2 Utility — the program for selecting the scanner and checking the connection.

Shortcuts for these programs may appear only in the Start menu. Desktop shortcuts may not be created.

  1. Make sure the device is turned on.
  2. Make sure USB, Wi-Fi, or Ethernet is working normally.
  3. If the device is connected through a USB hub, connect it directly to the computer.
  4. If the computer was in sleep mode, fully wake it up and launch Epson Scan 2 again.
  5. Open the Start menu and launch Epson Scan 2 Utility.
  6. Make sure the correct printer model is selected.
  7. If resetting does not help, reinstall the scanner driver and Epson Scan 2.

If documents remain in the print list

  1. Open the print queue.
  2. Delete all documents from the list.
  3. Restart the Print Spooler service.
  4. Restart the printer and the computer.
  5. Try printing only one short document again.

If the problem repeats, check whether old or extra printer entries remain in Windows. If they do, remove them.

If the printer prints blank pages

  1. Make sure the document really contains text or an image.
  2. Check the ink level in the tanks. The level must be above the lower line.
  3. Make sure the correct paper size is selected both in the document and in the print settings.
  4. Run a nozzle check.
  5. If the nozzle check shows gaps, run print head cleaning.

If there is no improvement after cleaning, you can repeat it once more. If nothing changes after three cleanings in a row, turn the printer off and wait at least 12 hours. Then run the nozzle check again.

If prints have streaks, gaps, or incorrect colors

  1. Check the ink level.
  2. Make sure the correct paper type is selected in the print settings.
  3. Check that grayscale printing is not enabled if you need color printing.
  4. Run a nozzle check.
  5. If the nozzle check shows gaps, run print head cleaning.
  6. If the lines still look uneven after cleaning, run print head alignment.

If normal cleaning does not help, use Power Cleaning only as a last step. Epson recommends waiting at least 12 hours after Power Cleaning if print quality does not improve immediately.

If the ADF does not pick up originals

  1. Check that the ADF icon is lit on the printer screen.
  2. If the ADF icon does not appear, remove the originals and load them again.
  3. Make sure the documents are suitable in size and thickness for the ADF.
  4. Do not load originals above the arrow mark on the ADF guide.
  5. Slide the guide to the edge of the originals, but not too tightly.
  6. If necessary, clean the inside of the ADF.

If the printer makes noise but does not copy

  1. Run a nozzle check.
  2. If the nozzle check shows gaps, run print head cleaning.
  3. If the nozzle check does not print, check whether the printer software is installed correctly.
  4. Make sure the printer is standing level and not tilted.

If the printer makes noise from time to time when you are not using it, that may be normal maintenance.

If fax does not send or receive

  1. Make sure the telephone cable is connected to the correct port on the printer and to the telephone line.
  2. Make sure the line works and that the recipient has a working fax turned on.
  3. Run Fax Setting Wizard on the printer and check the basic fax settings.
  4. If necessary, lower the fax speed in the settings if the connection is unstable.
  5. Check the fax log and transmission status on the printer screen.

How to check fax status

  1. Press OK.
  2. Select More.
  3. Select Transmission Log.
  4. Open the required job and check the result.

If the printer was just filled with ink for the first time

After the first fill, the printer charges the print head.

During this process, the power light may flash and messages may appear on the screen. Do not turn the printer off until charging is finished.

If the process does not finish within about 20 minutes, turn the printer off, turn it on again, and check whether charging continues. If charging still does not finish, contact support.

If this is not the first fill, such a long process is usually not considered normal. If the printer shows an error for a long time or does not print after a normal refill, move to the troubleshooting steps above.

What to check on the Epson L5290 screen

  • No Wi-Fi icon: the printer is not connected to the wireless network.
  • Network error shown: there is a Wi-Fi or Ethernet problem. Check the network connection report.
  • ADF icon present: the printer detects documents in the automatic document feeder.
  • Paper message: there is no paper, multiple sheets were fed, or there is a paper jam.
  • Ink message: the initial ink charging may not be complete, or the ink level needs to be checked.
  • Waste ink pad message: the waste ink pad is near the end of its service life or already needs service. In that case, service is required.

How to check the printer without a computer

  1. Press Home.
  2. Select Maintenance.
  3. Select Nozzle Check.
  4. Press Start.

The printer should print a test sheet.

  • The test sheet printed normally. That means the printer itself is working. The problem should be looked for in Windows, the cable, the settings, or the network.
  • The test sheet has gaps. You need to clean the print head.
  • The test sheet did not print at all. There may be a printer hardware problem.

How to clean the print head

  1. Press Home.
  2. Select Maintenance.
  3. Select Head Cleaning.
  4. Confirm that you want to start cleaning.

Do not turn the printer off until cleaning is complete.

After cleaning, run the nozzle check again. If there is no improvement after three cleanings in a row, turn the printer off and wait at least 12 hours. Then repeat the check.

Additional user tips

Important: this section contains unofficial user tips. They often help, but they are not part of Epson’s official instructions. First complete the official checks, and only then move to these options.

  • If printing or scanning over Wi-Fi works unstably, temporarily disable VPN on the computer.
  • If the router broadcasts one shared network for 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz, try temporarily connecting the computer to the 2.4 GHz network.
  • If the device disappears from the network after replacing the router, remove the old printer entry from Windows and install the device again.
  • If you use USB, try a rear USB port on the system unit instead of a front one.
  • If several similar Epson entries remain in Windows, remove the extra ones and keep only one working printer.
  • If Epson Scan 2 does not detect the scanner, open Epson Scan 2 Utility first, check the selected device there, and only then launch Epson Scan 2.
  • If print quality improved after cleaning but gaps still remain, do not run many cleanings in a row. Let the printer sit for a few hours, and only then test again.
  • If one document gets stuck again and again, first try printing a plain text file. This helps determine whether the problem is with the printer itself or only with one specific program.

When it is better to contact service

  • The test sheet will not print at all without a computer.
  • Print quality does not improve after several cleanings.
  • The ADF still feeds originals poorly after reloading and cleaning.
  • Fax still does not work after running the fax wizard again.
  • A waste ink pad message is shown.
  • Printing, copying, scanning, or fax still does not work after removing and adding the printer again.
  • The network error does not disappear even after setting up Wi-Fi or Ethernet again.

Brief conclusion

First check the connection type: USB, Wi-Fi, or Ethernet, then check the print queue, offline mode, and the default printer in Windows. If that does not help, print a nozzle check from the printer control panel. If the problem is related to scanning, open Epson Scan 2 Utility. If fax does not work, start with Fax Setting Wizard and the transmission log.
