In this case, the operating system detects the connected device and installs its own driver, which may not work correctly or not work at all. Check out some comments from people who have had problems using this printer and software:
1 Comment: Avoid this printer as it requires activation and the installation software is dreadful.
Spent best part of a day speaking to three different technical support people at HP, before deciding to return the printer.
Reasons to avoid this machine.
1. In order to use it the machine must be paired and activated – Why the hell do you need to activate a printer?
2. The implementation software is appalling. In particular the pairing code needs to be printed, for reasons unknown to myself and HP tech support the Printer kept failing to print the pairing code. Why can this information so critical to get the machine working not simply be displayed on screen ?
3. Finally in HP’s stupidity they decided to refuse access to the Printer’s web page until it had been activated, meaning that it was impossible to reset the printer via the web page.
I have purchased many HP printers through the years and found them reliable workhorses. I will never buy an HP printer again after this experience.

2 Comment: annoyingly impractical
As others have already written, the printer is difficult to activate. It requires an internet connection and a data-collecting account with HP. Without this, the printer simply refuses to work. If something goes wrong, you’re on your own. Through trial and error I finally got the thing activated in several hours. Now it takes forever to turn it on every time, and then it has to spend a long time searching for the WiFi before it works. The operation of the buttons is also incomprehensible, and pressing the buttons often has no effect.
What’s also annoying is how they try to trick me into an automatic subscription to HP toner using a deliberately confusing user interface. But apparently such dirty tricks are necessary, because who in their right mind would take out a toner subscription for 7.99 euros a month? Mind you, the 7.99 euros are not for the toner, but only for the fact that it is automatically sent to you at twice the price of the toner that you get from a third-party provider. However, the use of toner cartridges from third-party providers is deliberately blocked in this model in order to be able to take the exorbitant price out of the customer’s pocket.
Not even printing works smoothly: When I print from Windows, this completely unsmart ‘HP smart’ app opens every time – a pointless additional step just to get a sheet of paper printed out. Controlling the printer directly – like it worked with every other printer I’ve had so far – doesn’t seem possible.
Despite my anger, I have now decided to keep the item. Because I don’t want the hassle of returning something. If the toner supplied runs out, I’ll write off the purchase price as a loss (why didn’t I read the reviews before ordering?), and then my next printer will definitely not be from HP. And neither does the one after that.

3 Comment:
I’m an IT Manager, been working in IT for 30 years or more and I’ve probably purchased hundreds of HP printers in that time. I have not often needed a printer of my own as I just print stuff at work if I need to. Now I’m working more and more from home so thought I’d get a basic B&W laser printer and went for HP. That was a big mistake, it seems that now you have to activate your printer online before you can use the damn thing, HP basically want to harvest and sell your data to make some more money. That is a massive red flag for me so I put it back in the box and returned it. I will ask my team if this also applies to business class printers and if it does I will never be buying another HP printer and nor should you.
