INSTALLATION TYPES
The user can choose between two different kinds of installations in Xerox Smart Start.
• Quick Install – Xerox Smart Start will automatically install drivers based on the user’s operating system and printer model. Quick install does not install scan drivers.
• Advanced Install – Xerox Smart Start will allow the user to choose which print system, PDL, and scan driver they want to install. Xerox Smart Start will recommend which options provide the best print experience.
How to Install a Printer with Xerox Smart Start
1. Launch XeroxSmartStart.exe – this requires elevation to an administrator account.
2. Agree to the EULA
3. Xerox Smart Start will scan for printers
4. Select the printer you want to install and choose either Quick Install or Advanced Install.
a. If you select Quick Install you are done!
b. If you select Advanced Install then Xerox Smart Start will present you with a list of options: Print System, Driver PDL, Scanner Driver Options, and Printer Name. Once you have selected the options you want, select Install to start the installation process.
5. If Xerox Smart Start did not find the printer you want to install select Don’t See Your Printer.
a. Enter the printer’s hostname or IP address and select Continue. If Xerox Smart Start detects your printer it will take you to the Advanced Install screen.
6. When the installation finishes Xerox Smart Start will display a confirmation screen. You can Install Another Printer or exit by selecting Done. You also have the option to print a test page.

Description: Automatically downloads and installs both the printer driver (PostScript/PCL5/PCL6) and scan driver (TWAIN). Microsoft WHQL certified.
For Xerox ColorQube 9301, Xerox uses the universal print driver Xerox Global Print Driver (GPD). It supports Windows 11, Windows 10, Windows 8, Windows 8.1, and Windows 7, but it is distributed as a ZIP archive without an installer (.exe). That’s normal: inside you’ll find the driver in .INF format, which you install using standard Windows tools.
1) Where to download the drivers (official Xerox pages)
Xerox Global Print Driver (PS and PCL6) — downloads page:
https://www.support.xerox.com/en-us/product/global-printer-driver/downloads
Which driver to choose: PS or PCL6
On the Xerox page, there are two printer driver options:
- UNIV_5.1076.3.0_PS_x64.zip — PostScript (PS) driver
- UNIV_5.1076.3.0_PCL6_x64.zip — PCL6 driver
Recommendation for most users: choose PS. It is often more stable for printing PDFs, complex layouts, and documents with fonts.
When PCL6 is better: if you mostly print from Word/Excel and/or if you run into issues after installing PS (print jobs hang, odd job processing, etc.), try PCL6.
Why there is no .exe in the archive and what’s inside
There is no installer because this is a “driver package” for manual installation. You install it via the .INF file:
- PS: x3UNIVP.inf (inside the extracted folder)
- PCL6: x3UNIVX.inf (inside the extracted folder)
If file extensions (such as .INF) are hidden and you can’t find x3UNIVP.inf or x3UNIVX.inf, look for a file named x3UNIVP or x3UNIVX. It’s the same file—Windows may have “File name extensions” turned off.
Preparation before installation
- Download the required archive (PS or PCL6) from the official Xerox page.
- Extract the ZIP to a simple folder.
- Choose the connection method: USB or network. If it’s a network connection, you’ll need the printer’s IP address (you can view it on the device panel or print a configuration report).
2) Driver installation (USB connection)
If the Xerox ColorQube 9301 is connected via USB, the usual order is:
- Connect the USB cable and wait for Windows to create the printer (or for a new device to appear).
- Open the list of printers and find the added printer (even if it is named “USB Printing Support” or similar).
- Open Printer properties → Advanced tab → New Driver… or Change Driver….
- Click Have Disk… and point to the INF (PS: x3UNIVP.inf or PCL6: x3UNIVX.inf).
- Apply the settings and print a test page.
This video shows how to manually install a driver using “Have Disk…”
3) Driver installation in Windows 10 / Windows 11 (network, via IP and .INF)
This is a common method for the Xerox ColorQube 9301.
- Open Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Printers & scanners.
- Click Add device.
- If the device is not found automatically, select something like Add manually / The printer that I want isn’t listed.
- Select the option to add a printer using manual settings.
- At the port selection step:
- Select Create a new port
- Port type: Standard TCP/IP Port
- Enter the IP address of the Xerox ColorQube 9301
- When the manufacturer/model selection window appears, click Have Disk….
- Click Browse and select the INF file from the extracted folder:
- for PS: x3UNIVP.inf
- for PCL6: x3UNIVX.inf
- Select the Xerox driver from the list and click Next.
- Set the printer name (for example, Xerox ColorQube 9301) and finish installation.
- Print a test page (recommended to verify printing right away).
4) Driver installation in Windows 7 (network, via IP and .INF)
- Open Start → Control Panel → Devices and Printers.
- Click Add a printer.
- Select Add a local printer (even if it’s a network printer—we will create a TCP/IP port next).
- Select Create a new port → Standard TCP/IP Port, then click Next.
- Enter the IP address of the device and finish creating the port.
- At the driver selection step, click Have Disk… and point to the INF:
- for PS: x3UNIVP.inf
- for PCL6: x3UNIVX.inf
- Finish installation and print a test page.
