If a document scanned through the feeder looks enlarged and part of the text or the margins is cropped, the problem is usually not related to resolution, color, or file format. In most cases, the cause is that the wrong original size is set for feeder scanning, or the document orientation is selected incorrectly.
How the problem appears
- when scanning through the feeder, the image looks enlarged;
- the left, right, top, or bottom edge of the document is cropped;
- if you scan the same sheet from the platen glass, the result is normal;
- changing the resolution, color mode, or file format does not help.
Why this happens
For feeder scanning, it is important that the software or the multifunction printer correctly recognizes the original size. If the wrong format is selected in the settings, part of the image may be left out of the scan, and the document itself may look enlarged or reduced.
In simple terms: if you place a normal A4 sheet in the feeder, but the software expects a different size or tries to detect the size incorrectly, the final scan will be wrong.
What will not help
This problem is usually not solved by the following actions:
- changing the resolution from 200 to 300 or 600 dpi;
- switching between color and black-and-white mode;
- changing the file format between PDF, JPEG, or TIFF.
These settings affect image quality and file size, but they do not correct an incorrectly set original size in feeder scanning.
How to fix the problem in MF Scan Utility
If you save the scan to a computer, the main settings for this type of scanning are configured not on the multifunction printer control panel, but in MF Scan Utility.
- Open MF Scan Utility: Windows → Start → Canon → MF Scan Utility.
- In [Product Name], select your machine.
- Click [Settings].
- Open the Scanning from a computer section.
- Select the scan type you normally use:
- [Document], if you scan normal documents;
- [Custom], if you already use your own saved profile.
- Check [Scanning Method].
- If you are scanning specifically through the feeder, select the mode that uses the feeder.
- If [Auto Mode] is enabled, be sure to check the settings below as well.
- Check [Paper Size].
- For a normal A4 document, set A4.
- If [Flexible] is currently selected and the scan has cropped edges, first try changing it to the fixed size A4.
- If the document has a non-standard size, you can choose [Custom] and enter the required size manually.
- Check [Document Scan Orientation Settings]. It must match the way the sheet is placed in the feeder.
- If you are scanning a 2-sided document, enable [Scan both sides when scanning from the feeder] and then check the orientation again.
- Click [OK] and run a new scan.
In most cases, the problem disappears after that. The main idea is simple: for A4, it is safer to set A4 explicitly instead of assuming the software will always detect the size correctly.
If you start scanning from the multifunction printer control panel
If the document is scanned to a computer from the machine control panel, it is important to understand that the save settings and some scan settings are still taken from MF Scan Utility. So if feeder scanning crops the edges, the settings must usually be corrected in the MF Scan Utility profile, not only on the multifunction printer screen.
On the control panel itself, make sure that a normal document scan is selected and that the sheet is loaded straight. But if the scan is being saved to a computer, the main check still needs to be done in the PC software.
How to check the settings in ScanGear MF
If you scan through ScanGear MF or want to review the advanced settings, do the following:
- Open MF Scan Utility.
- Select the machine in [Scanner] or [Product Name].
- Click [ScanGear].
- In the ScanGear MF window, open the [Advanced Mode] tab.
- In [Input Settings], check:
- [Input Size] — it must match the real original size, usually A4;
- [Orientation] — it must match the position of the document.
- If you use a non-standard sheet, enter the correct size manually.
- Click [Scan].
In ScanGear MF, it is especially important not to leave the wrong original size selected. If the wrong format is selected there, the result will also be wrong.
What to check in the feeder itself
- Load documents of one size only in the feeder. Do not mix A4 with sheets of other sizes in one stack.
- The sheet should not have heavy bends, folds, or waves.
- The guides must be adjusted exactly to the width of the sheet.
- Do not load too large a stack of documents.
- If the machine is new, but documents still feed crookedly from the first day, test the feeder again with one clean A4 sheet.
When the problem is probably no longer in the settings
If all the conditions below are true, but feeder scans are still enlarged and cropped, the problem may no longer be software-related:
- you are scanning one normal A4 sheet;
- the guides are adjusted correctly;
- A4 is set in MF Scan Utility;
- the correct original size is also set in ScanGear MF;
- the same document scans normally from the platen glass.
In that situation, it makes sense to contact warranty support or service. If everything is normal from the platen glass, but the problem appears only in the feeder, the ADF assembly itself should be checked.
Brief conclusion
For the Canon MF461dw, MF463dw, and MF465dw, this problem is usually caused by the original size being set incorrectly for feeder scanning or by the wrong document orientation being selected. First, check [Paper Size] and [Document Scan Orientation Settings] in MF Scan Utility, and if you use ScanGear MF, also check [Input Size] and [Orientation]. If the document is A4, it is safer to set A4 explicitly than to rely on automatic detection.
