Canon MF657Cdw / MF655Cdw / MF651Cw: Scanning to a Shared Folder Does Not Work — Errors #801 and #806

Last Updated on 14.04.2026 by DriverNew

Applies to models: Canon MF657Cdw, MF655Cdw, MF651Cw.

If the multifunction printer scans the document but does not save it to a shared folder on the computer, or if error #801 or #806 appears on the screen, this does not necessarily mean the device is faulty. In most cases, the problem is related to the shared folder setup, destination settings, the user name, the password, or folder access permissions in Windows.

How the problem usually appears

  • the multifunction printer starts scanning, but the file does not appear in the shared folder;
  • error #801 or #806 appears on the control panel;
  • scanning to a computer through MF Scan Utility works, but scanning to a shared folder does not;
  • the problem appeared immediately after the first setup or after the Windows password was changed.

Why this happens

For this Canon product line, scanning to a shared folder works through SMB. This means the machine must be told in advance where the folder is located, what the computer is called, whether the folder has access restrictions, and which user name and password should be used.

If even one of these settings is entered incorrectly, the machine will not be able to save the file, even if the network itself is working and network printing works without issues.

Where to start

  1. Restart the multifunction printer.
  2. Restart the computer that hosts the shared folder.
  3. Then try sending the scan to the same folder again.

If the error remains, continue with the step-by-step check below.

Step 1. Make sure scanning to a shared folder is supported on these models

This feature is supported on the Canon MF657Cdw, MF655Cdw, and MF651Cw. In Canon documentation, it is described as saving scanned documents to a shared folder.

So if scanning to a shared folder does not work, the issue is usually not lack of feature support, but an incorrect setup.

Step 2. If you are setting up the shared folder for the first time, prepare all information in advance

Canon separately states that before setup you need to know:

  • the IP address of the machine;
  • the name of the computer that hosts the shared folder;
  • the path and name of the shared folder;
  • if the folder has access restrictions, the user name and password.

If even one of these values is missing, find it first and then continue with destination registration.

Step 3. Make sure <Use HTTP> and <Use Remote UI> are set to <On>

Canon explicitly lists this as part of the required preparation before configuring a shared folder.

  1. Open the network settings on the machine or in Remote UI.
  2. Make sure <Use HTTP> and <Use Remote UI> are enabled.
  3. If either one is disabled, enable it and then continue with the setup.

Step 4. Register the shared folder through Send Function Setting Tool

For this Canon product line, the shared folder destination for scanning is registered from a computer. Canon explicitly states that a shared folder or FTP server used as a destination for scanned documents is registered from a computer.

  1. Open a web browser on the computer.
  2. Enter the following in the address bar:
    http://IP-address-of-the-machine/sendsupport_login.html
  3. Press [ENTER].
  4. Send Function Setting Tool opens.
  5. Select the machine in [Device List] and click [Next].
  6. If the machine is not found, click [Search Again].
  7. If that does not help, click [Search by IP Address], enter the IP address of the machine, and click [OK].

Step 5. Open [Store to Shared Folder Settings] and fill in the fields carefully

  1. After entering the tool, click [Start].
  2. Open [Store to Shared Folder Settings].
  3. If necessary, enter the Address Book PIN.
  4. Fill in the fields:
    • [Favorites Number];
    • [Name for Favorites Number];
    • [Computer Name of Store Destination];
    • [Shared Folder Name on Store Destination Computer].

Pay especially close attention to the last two fields. This is where the cause of the error is most often hidden.

Step 6. If the folder has access restrictions, set [Access Restriction to Shared Folder] correctly

This is one of the most important steps. Canon explicitly states that if access to the shared folder is restricted, you need to choose [Set] and fill in the access fields.

  1. In [Status of Settings for Shared Folder], find [Access Restriction to Shared Folder].
  2. If the folder requires a user name and password, select [Set].
  3. Enter:
    • [Registered User Name];
    • [Password to Access].
  4. If the folder does not require authorization, leave the mode as [Not Set].

If there is an error here, the machine usually will not be able to save the file even if the folder path itself was entered correctly.

Step 7. Restart the machine after registering the destination

Canon explicitly lists restarting the machine as the final step after registering the shared folder.

  1. After entering the settings, click [Next].
  2. Check the settings.
  3. Click [Register].
  4. Restart the multifunction printer.

Step 8. If error #801 appears, first check the folder, path, and password

For error #801, Canon lists several typical causes. In the shared-folder context, the most important are:

  • a folder-related error occurred;
  • the folder name or path was entered incorrectly;
  • the password used for saving to the shared folder is incorrect;
  • the folder itself or the computer hosting it is not working correctly.

So when #801 appears, check:

  1. whether the computer hosting the shared folder is turned on;
  2. whether the folder itself is accessible;
  3. whether the path in [Shared Folder Name on Store Destination Computer] is correct;
  4. whether the access password has changed.

Step 9. If error #806 appears, almost always check the user name and password first

For error #806, Canon explicitly states that the user name or password used for saving to the shared folder or FTP server is incorrect.

  1. Open the shared-folder destination again through Send Function Setting Tool or Remote UI.
  2. Check [Registered User Name] and [Password to Access].
  3. Enter them again carefully, without guessing or shortening anything.
  4. Save the changes and try sending the scan again.

If the Windows password was changed recently, the old password stored in the multifunction printer destination will no longer work.

Step 10. Check the shared folder permissions in Windows

Even if the path and password are correct, the multifunction printer will not be able to write the file if the user does not have permission to write to the folder.

  1. On the computer, right-click the shared folder.
  2. Select [Properties].
  3. Open the [Security] tab.
  4. Make sure the required user has permission to write and modify files.
  5. If the permissions are missing, add them and test scanning again.

Step 11. If your Windows network uses a workgroup, check the SMB settings on the machine

Canon also states that in some SMB environments, you may need to configure the computer name, the workgroup name, and related SMB client settings.

  1. Open Remote UI.
  2. Go to [Settings/Registration][Network Settings][Computer Name/Workgroup Name Settings].
  3. Check:
    • [Computer Name];
    • [Workgroup Name];
    • if needed, [Use NetBIOS].
  4. If your network really uses Windows workgroups, these settings must be correct.

This step is more often needed in a more complex local network than in a simple home setup.

Step 12. Remember that shared-folder destinations are registered from a computer, not from the device panel

This is a common source of confusion. Canon explicitly states that shared folders and FTP servers used as destinations for scanned documents are registered from a computer. So if you are looking for the full destination setup only on the device panel, the required options may simply not be there.

How to quickly tell where the problem is

  • If error #801 appears — first check the folder path, the folder name, whether the computer is available, and the password.
  • If error #806 appears — almost always check the access user name and password first.
  • If this is the first setup — the problem is most often caused by incorrectly filled destination fields.
  • If everything worked before and then stopped — first check whether the Windows password or shared folder settings were changed.

When to contact support

  • you already prepared the shared folder according to Canon guidance;
  • you checked [Computer Name of Store Destination] and [Shared Folder Name on Store Destination Computer];
  • you rechecked [Registered User Name] and [Password to Access];
  • you checked the folder permissions in Windows;
  • the error still repeats after that.

If scanning to a shared folder still does not work after these checks, it is reasonable to contact Canon support or your network administrator.

Brief conclusion

For the Canon MF657Cdw, MF655Cdw, and MF651Cw, problems with scanning to a shared folder are most often caused not by device failure, but by destination setup and access permissions. First, check [Store to Shared Folder Settings], the fields [Computer Name of Store Destination] and [Shared Folder Name on Store Destination Computer], the setting [Access Restriction to Shared Folder], and also [Registered User Name] and [Password to Access]. For error #801, the main suspect is usually the folder path or password. For error #806, it is usually incorrect credentials.
