Installing and connecting Redragon K552-KR

Is a separate driver required?

For typing and normal operation, Redragon K552-KR uses the standard Windows HID driver. After the keyboard is connected via USB, Windows 11 or Windows 10 should detect it automatically.

It is important to distinguish between three different components:

Component

What it is used for

Windows HID driver

Provides basic keyboard operation and text input. Updating it is not required for a normal Software installation.

If K552-KR already types text, the system HID driver is installed and working. Reinstalling it just because Redragon Software does not detect the keyboard is usually unnecessary.

Current and older K552-KR revisions

K552-KR has an important characteristic: keyboards with the same basic model designation are available in different hardware revisions.

Redragon provides separate Windows Software for K552-KR. However, the availability of official software does not mean that it is necessarily compatible with every K552-KR manufactured earlier.

Therefore, two situations are possible:

a current K552-KR revision is detected by the official Software and allows the available software settings to be used;

an older or regional revision works normally in Windows as a keyboard, but Software reports that the device is not detected.

If K552-KR types normally but Redragon Software does not detect it, this does not necessarily mean there is a problem with the USB port, HID driver, or the keyboard itself. The cause may be an incompatible hardware revision.

Which Software to use

For this model, use software designed specifically for Redragon K552-KR.

Official Software download page for Redragon K552-KR

The verified installer file is named:

Redragon_K552-KR_Software.exe

Verified file size

2,637,094 bytes

SHA-256

1418748c1fdc4b8051c56c5262399e12474ef530b9dec10754baba3fec5a2d77

Installer type

Inno Setup, Windows application

The checksum applies to the verified copy of the installer. If the name of an interface element is unknown, use its purpose as a guide — for example, the lighting control section or key settings.

If software for another K552 was previously installed

Software for a similar model may install in Windows, but this does not mean it is compatible with K552-KR.

Windows 11

Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps.

Find the previously installed Redragon program for another keyboard.

Uninstall it.

Restart Windows.

Connect K552-KR.

Install the correct
Redragon_K552-KR_Software.exe
.

Windows 10

Open Settings → Apps → Apps & features.

Uninstall the unsuitable Redragon program.

Restart the computer.

Install Software for K552-KR.

When normally reinstalling Redragon Software, there is no need to remove system HID devices from Device Manager.

Part 2. Rainbow RGB configuration and troubleshooting

What Rainbow RGB means on K552-KR

When describing K552-KR, it is important not to confuse Rainbow backlighting with fully addressable RGB backlighting that allows any of millions of colors to be freely assigned to each individual key.

The current K552-KR is specified with Rainbow backlighting featuring several colors and various effects. Therefore, the presence of RGB in the name or description does not mean that a specific revision allows absolutely any color to be assigned to every key.

If the keyboard displays multicolor effects but the software does not allow an arbitrary color to be selected for each key, this does not by itself prove a malfunction. First consider the capabilities of the specific Rainbow version of K552-KR.

Configuring the backlight through Software

If the installed Software detects K552-KR:

Start the software while the keyboard is connected.

Open the lighting control section.

Review the available modes and effects.

Select the required mode.

Configure the settings available for that mode.

Apply the changes using the software.

The available settings depend on the hardware revision and the capabilities of the Rainbow backlighting itself. Do not rely on videos or instructions for K552-RGB and expect K552-KR to provide the same set of color settings.

Why you cannot select any color for every key

One common source of confusion is the use of the term RGB for Rainbow backlighting.

If K552-KR offers several preset colors and effects but does not allow an arbitrary color to be assigned to each key, this may be a normal limitation of the specific keyboard version.

Before looking for a malfunction, check:

the exact model on the keyboard label;

whether instructions for K552-RGB are being used instead of K552-KR;

whether the official K552-KR Software detects the keyboard;

which functions the software actually provides after detecting the device.

Do not install software for K552-RGB just to obtain additional color settings.

Device is not detected error

If Redragon Software starts but reports that the device is not detected, first determine whether the keyboard itself works in Windows.

The keyboard types, but Software does not detect it

This is the most important scenario for K552-KR.

Close Redragon Software.

Check that normal text input works.

Make sure Software specifically for K552-KR is installed.

Disconnect the keyboard.

Connect it to another USB port directly on the computer.

Wait for Windows to detect the device.

Start the software again.

If the Device is not detected message remains despite normal keyboard operation, the Software is likely incompatible with this hardware revision.

Do not try to fix the Device is not detected error by installing firmware from K552-RGB, K552-KRS, K552P-KB, or K552P-KR EU. Incompatible firmware may cause incorrect key operation, layout problems, or controller malfunctions.

An older K552-KR is not detected by newer Software

If the keyboard was manufactured significantly earlier than the release of separate K552-KR Software, normal operation as a HID device still does not guarantee compatibility with current Redragon software.

Signs of this situation:

Windows reliably detects the keyboard;

text input works;

the built-in backlighting works;

the official K552-KR Software installs;

the software reports that the device was not found.

If another USB port and a clean installation of the correct Software do not help, do not repeatedly reinstall the Windows HID driver. The problem may be specifically related to the keyboard’s hardware revision.

Software opens, but changes are not applied

If the software detects K552-KR but the selected backlight settings are not applied:

Select another available mode and try applying it.

Close the software completely.

Disconnect the keyboard.

Connect it again.

Start Software again.

Check the connection through another USB port.

If Software for another K552 was previously installed, uninstall it and reinstall the correct software.

If some settings are unavailable, this may also be a limitation of the Rainbow version rather than a software error.

After installing the software, the keyboard types the wrong characters

If a key physically works but Windows displays a different character, first check the operating system’s language layout. Redragon Software and the Windows keyboard layout perform different tasks.

Windows 11

Open:

Settings → Time & language → Language & region

Check the added languages and keyboard layouts.

Windows 10

Open:

Settings → Time & language → Language

Check the installed keyboard layout.

Regional ISO keyboard versions should be checked especially carefully. A mismatch between the physical layout and the layout selected in Windows may look like a malfunction even though the keyboard is working correctly.

Regional ISO version and incorrect software

If the physical position of individual keys does not match the keyboard image in Software, do not install firmware from another K552 in an attempt to change the virtual layout.

First check:

the exact model designation;

the regional keyboard layout;

whether the correct Windows layout is selected;

whether Software specifically for K552-KR is being used.

If the problem exists only inside Redragon Software while Windows correctly detects all key presses, the cause may be the software’s layout mapping rather than the mechanical switch.

One key does not work

If the problem affects an individual key, first determine whether it is related to the software, layout, or the switch itself.

Symptom

What to check

The key types a different character

The Windows language layout.

The key works in Windows but is displayed incorrectly in Software

Software compatibility with the regional layout.

A key press is occasionally missed

The switch, contact, and key operation without Software.

The key does not respond at all on several computers

A possible hardware failure of the switch or circuit board.

Hot-swap and switch replacement

The current K552-KR version is specified as hot-swappable and designed for compatible 3-pin Redragon/Outemu switches.

If an individual key works intermittently and Software and the Windows layout have been ruled out as the cause, you can check the switch if the specific K552-KR actually has hot-swap sockets.

Do not automatically apply the specifications of the current K552-KR to every older revision.
