It includes the print driver, scanner driver, and <strong>HP Scan<\/strong> software, so HP Smart or HP app is not required for normal printing and local scanning via USB.<\/p>\n<div style=\"background: #fffbf0; border-left: 4px solid #ff9800; padding: 14px 16px; margin: 18px 0;\"><strong>Important:<\/strong> HP LaserJet MFP M142a connects to the computer via USB. This model uses the USB version of the installation package. Do not use the package intended for wireless models in the series instead.<\/div>\n<div style=\"background: #f4f7fa; border-left: 4px solid #325c92; padding: 14px 16px; margin: 18px 0;\"><strong>Before installation:<\/strong> turn on the MFP, but <strong>do not connect the USB cable to the computer in advance<\/strong>. Connect the cable only after HP Easy Start displays the \u201cConnect printer using USB\u201d screen.<\/div>\n<h2>If the driver is being installed for the first time<\/h2>\n<p>If this is the first installation of HP LaserJet MFP M142a on this computer and the MFP has not previously been connected via USB, go directly to the \u201cInstalling printer and scanner drivers\u201d section.<\/p>\n<h2>Removing a previous installation if problems occur<\/h2>\n<p>This step is required only if the MFP has already been connected to the computer and the previous installation ended with an error, the printer is detected incorrectly, or the scanner does not work.<\/p>\n<h3>Windows 11<\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Disconnect the MFP USB cable from the computer.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Open \u201cSettings \u2192 Bluetooth &amp; devices \u2192 Printers &amp; scanners\u201d.<\/li>\n<li>Select <strong>HP LaserJet MFP M139-M142<\/strong> and remove it. Windows and HP software may use this series name for the M142a model.<\/li>\n<li>Open \u201cSettings \u2192 Apps \u2192 Installed apps\u201d.<\/li>\n<li>If HP software related to HP LaserJet MFP M139-M142 is listed, uninstall it.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Restart the computer.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3>Windows 10<\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Disconnect the MFP USB cable from the computer.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Open \u201cSettings \u2192 Devices \u2192 Printers &amp; scanners\u201d.<\/li>\n<li>Select <strong>HP LaserJet MFP M139-M142<\/strong> and click \u201cRemove device\u201d.<\/li>\n<li>Open \u201cSettings \u2192 Apps \u2192 Apps &amp; features\u201d.<\/li>\n<li>If HP software related to HP LaserJet MFP M139-M142 is listed, uninstall it.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Restart the computer.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3>Additional removal of the old driver<\/h3>\n<p>If the problem persists after normal removal, you can also remove the remaining driver package.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Press <kbd>Win<\/kbd> + <kbd>R<\/kbd>.<\/li>\n<li>Enter <code>printui \/s \/t2<\/code> and press Enter.<\/li>\n<li>Open the \u201cDrivers\u201d tab.<\/li>\n<li>Find the driver related to <strong>HP LaserJet MFP M139-M142<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>If the driver is present and no longer in use, select it and click \u201cRemove\u201d.<\/li>\n<li>If Windows offers a choice, use <strong>\u201cRemove driver and driver package\u201d<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Restart the computer.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<div style=\"background: #f4f7fa; border-left: 4px solid #325c92; padding: 14px 16px; margin: 18px 0;\">If the corresponding driver is not listed, no additional removal is required. Close the window and continue with the installation.<\/div>\n<h2>Installing printer and scanner drivers in Windows 11 and Windows 10<\/h2>\n<p>The following installation package is used for HP LaserJet MFP M142a:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ftp.hp.com\/pub\/softlib\/software13\/printers\/LJM139-M142\/HPEasyStart-13.6.5-LJM139-M142_U_54_3_5248_1_Webpack.exe\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">HPEasyStart-13.6.5-LJM139-M142_U_54_3_5248_1_Webpack.exe<\/a><\/p>\n<div style=\"background: #fffbf0; border-left: 4px solid #ff9800; padding: 14px 16px; margin: 18px 0;\"><strong>Pay attention to the filename:<\/strong> HP LaserJet MFP M142a uses the version with <strong>_U_<\/strong> in the name. Do not use the <strong>_UWL_<\/strong> package instead, as it is intended for models in the series with additional connection methods.<\/div>\n<p><span class=\"hp-step-title\">Step 1: Launch HP Easy Start<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Turn on HP LaserJet MFP M142a.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Do not connect the USB cable to the computer yet.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Double-click the downloaded <strong>HPEasyStart-13.6.5-LJM139-M142_U_54_3_5248_1_Webpack.exe<\/strong> file.<\/li>\n<li>If Windows asks for permission to make changes, confirm the launch.<\/li>\n<li>Wait while the installation files are extracted and HP Easy Start opens.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span class=\"hp-step-title\">Step 2: Start the installation<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>On the <strong>\u201cWelcome to HP Easy Start\u201d<\/strong> screen, click <strong>\u201cContinue\u201d<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>On the next screen, the software will ask whether you want to allow usage data to be sent to HP.<\/li>\n<li>It is recommended to select <strong>\u201cNo\u201d<\/strong>. Sending this data is not required for driver installation or MFP operation. This also reduces optional network traffic, which may be useful with a slow, unstable, or limited internet connection.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<div style=\"background: #f4f7fa; border-left: 4px solid #325c92; padding: 14px 16px; margin: 18px 0;\"><strong>Selecting \u201cNo\u201d does not prevent driver installation.<\/strong> This setting relates to sending additional HP software usage data.<\/div>\n<p><span class=\"hp-step-title\">Step 3: Proceed to connection selection<\/span><\/p>\n<p>HP Easy Start will try to find the MFP. Because the USB cable is not connected yet, the software may display the message <strong>\u201cPrinter not found \u2014 let\u2019s try another way!\u201d<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<div style=\"background: #f4f7fa; border-left: 4px solid #325c92; padding: 14px 16px; margin: 18px 0;\"><strong>This is normal at this stage.<\/strong> The message that the printer was not found does not by itself indicate a problem with the MFP. The USB cable is intentionally still disconnected.<\/div>\n<ol>\n<li>Make sure HP LaserJet MFP M142a is turned on.<\/li>\n<li>Leave the USB cable disconnected from the computer.<\/li>\n<li>Click <strong>\u201cContinue\u201d<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span class=\"hp-step-title\">Step 4: Select USB connection<\/span><\/p>\n<p>On the next screen, HP Easy Start will ask you to select a connection method.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Select <strong>\u201cUSB cable (USB cable required for printer)\u201d<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Click <strong>\u201cContinue\u201d<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<div style=\"background: #f4f7fa; border-left: 4px solid #325c92; padding: 14px 16px; margin: 18px 0;\">The text under the USB option may state that some features intended for network models are unavailable with this type of connection. <strong>For HP LaserJet MFP M142a, this is not an error<\/strong>, because this model connects to the computer via USB.<\/div>\n<p><span class=\"hp-step-title\">Step 5: Connect the USB cable<\/span><\/p>\n<p>After selecting the connection method, the <strong>\u201cConnect printer using USB\u201d<\/strong> screen will appear.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Connect the square end of the USB cable to the USB port on the back of the MFP.<\/li>\n<li>Connect the flat end of the cable to an available USB port on the computer.<\/li>\n<li>For the initial installation, it is recommended to connect the MFP directly to the computer, without a USB hub, docking station, or extension cable.<\/li>\n<li>Wait while HP Easy Start detects the device and continues the installation.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<div style=\"background: #fffbf0; border-left: 4px solid #ff9800; padding: 14px 16px; margin: 18px 0;\"><strong>The USB cable should be connected at this stage.<\/strong> If Windows previously installed only a standard print driver automatically and the scanner does not work afterward, remove the previous installation and repeat the procedure with the USB cable disconnected.<\/div>\n<p><span class=\"hp-step-title\">Step 6: Install drivers and software<\/span><\/p>\n<p>After HP LaserJet MFP M142a is detected, the software will continue installing the required components.<\/p>\n<p>The installation package contains the <strong>print driver, WIA and TWAIN scanning components, and HP Scan software<\/strong>. Therefore, HP Smart or HP app is not required for normal printing and local scanning via USB.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Follow the installer messages.<\/li>\n<li>If the software asks you to select the software components, choose the option that includes printing and scanning functions.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Do not disconnect the MFP or USB cable during installation.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Wait for the installation completion message.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<div style=\"background: #f4f7fa; border-left: 4px solid #325c92; padding: 14px 16px; margin: 18px 0;\"><strong>The names and number of subsequent screens may vary.<\/strong> They depend on the Windows version and the software previously installed on the computer. Continue the installation according to the HP Easy Start messages until it is complete.<\/div>\n<p><span class=\"hp-step-title\">Step 7: Check printing<\/span><\/p>\n<p>After the installation is complete, make sure Windows detects the MFP correctly.<\/p>\n<h3>Windows 11<\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li>Open \u201cSettings \u2192 Bluetooth &amp; devices \u2192 Printers &amp; scanners\u201d.<\/li>\n<li>Make sure the HP device is listed. It may appear under the series name <strong>HP LaserJet MFP M139-M142<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Open the device and perform a test print, or print any document.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3>Windows 10<\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li>Open \u201cSettings \u2192 Devices \u2192 Printers &amp; scanners\u201d.<\/li>\n<li>Make sure the HP device is listed. It may appear under the series name <strong>HP LaserJet MFP M139-M142<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Perform a test print or print any document.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2>How to scan using HP Scan<\/h2>\n<p>The installation package contains <strong>HP Scan<\/strong>, which is intended for local scanning. You do not need to install HP Smart or HP app to use it.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Open the \u201cStart\u201d menu.<\/li>\n<li>Search for <strong>HP Scan<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Launch the program found in the search results.<\/li>\n<li>Place the document on the scanner glass.<\/li>\n<li>Select the required scanning settings.<\/li>\n<li>Scan the document and save the resulting file.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<div style=\"background: #f4f7fa; border-left: 4px solid #325c92; padding: 14px 16px; margin: 18px 0;\">If a separate <strong>HP Scan<\/strong> shortcut does not appear in the \u201cStart\u201d menu, check the installed HP software. Depending on the installation option, access to the scanning function may be located inside another HP software component.<\/div>\n<h2>Scanning using a Windows app<\/h2>\n<p>The installed WIA driver allows compatible Windows apps to be used for scanning.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Open the \u201cStart\u201d menu and find the \u201cWindows Scan\u201d app.<\/li>\n<li>If the app is not installed, it can be installed from Microsoft Store.<\/li>\n<li>Launch the app.<\/li>\n<li>Select HP LaserJet MFP M142a or the device displayed under the HP LaserJet MFP M139-M142 series name.<\/li>\n<li>Perform a test scan.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2>HP Easy Start does not detect the MFP after USB connection<\/h2>\n<p>If you connected the cable after the connection screen appeared, but HP LaserJet MFP M142a is not detected:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Make sure the MFP is turned on and in a ready state.<\/li>\n<li>Disconnect the USB cable from the computer and reconnect it.<\/li>\n<li>Try another USB port on the computer.<\/li>\n<li>Connect the MFP directly to the computer, without a USB hub or docking station.<\/li>\n<li>If possible, try another known-good USB cable.<\/li>\n<li>If other HP printers are connected to the computer, temporarily disconnect them during the initial installation.<\/li>\n<li>If the device was previously installed, remove the previous installation, restart the computer, and repeat the procedure.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<div style=\"background: #fffbf0; border-left: 4px solid #ff9800; padding: 14px 16px; margin: 18px 0;\"><strong>Do not repeatedly connect and disconnect the cable if the device is not detected.<\/strong> First try another USB port and another known-good USB cable. If that does not help, remove the previous installation and start the procedure again.<\/div>\n<h2>The printer works, but the scanner is not detected<\/h2>\n<p>If printing works but HP Scan or another app reports that the scanner was not found, first check the USB connection and the Windows Image Acquisition (WIA) service.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Make sure the USB cable is connected directly to the computer and the MFP is turned on.<\/li>\n<li>Press <kbd>Win<\/kbd> + <kbd>R<\/kbd>.<\/li>\n<li>Enter <code>services.msc<\/code> and press Enter.<\/li>\n<li>Find the <strong>\u201cWindows Image Acquisition (WIA)\u201d<\/strong> service.<\/li>\n<li>Make sure the service is not disabled.<\/li>\n<li>If the service is stopped, start it.<\/li>\n<li>If the service is already running, you can restart it.<\/li>\n<li>Then launch HP Scan again and try scanning.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<div style=\"background: #fffbf0; border-left: 4px solid #ff9800; padding: 14px 16px; margin: 18px 0;\"><strong>You do not need to specifically change the WIA service startup type to \u201cAutomatic\u201d.<\/strong> The important thing is that the service is not disabled and can start when an application accesses the scanner.<\/div>\n<h2>If only printing is available after installation<\/h2>\n<p>If HP LaserJet MFP M142a is detected and prints, but HP Scan is missing or the scanner does not work, the scanning software components may have been installed incorrectly or incompletely.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Disconnect the MFP USB cable from the computer.<\/li>\n<li>Remove the previous installation as described above.<\/li>\n<li>Restart the computer.<\/li>\n<li>Run <strong>HPEasyStart-13.6.5-LJM139-M142_U_54_3_5248_1_Webpack.exe<\/strong> again.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Do not connect the USB cable during the initial device search.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>After the message that the printer was not found appears, click \u201cContinue\u201d.<\/li>\n<li>Select <strong>\u201cUSB cable (USB cable required for printer)\u201d<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Connect the cable only after the <strong>\u201cConnect printer using USB\u201d<\/strong> screen appears.<\/li>\n<li>Complete the installation of all offered printing and scanning components.<\/li>\n<li>After installation, check again for HP Scan and test the scanner.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2>If HP Scan does not start<\/h2>\n<p>If HP Scan is installed but an error appears when you launch it:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Restart the computer and the MFP.<\/li>\n<li>Disconnect the USB cable and reconnect it.<\/li>\n<li>Try another USB port.<\/li>\n<li>Check the Windows Image Acquisition (WIA) service as described above.<\/li>\n<li>Test the scanner using the \u201cWindows Scan\u201d app in Windows.<\/li>\n<li>If scanning does not work in any application, remove the previous installation and reinstall the HP Easy Start package.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<div style=\"background: #fffbf0; border-left: 4px solid #ff9800; padding: 14px 16px; margin: 18px 0;\"><strong>Windows 11 on computers with an ARM processor:<\/strong> this installation package contains components for x86\/x64 architectures and should not be considered a full driver package for Windows 11 ARM64. If HP Easy Start does not install on an ARM-based computer, connect the MFP via USB and allow Windows to install an available compatible driver.
