On a computer with an ARM processor, first open Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Printers & scanners, turn on the multifunction printer, connect it via USB and click Add device. Microsoft warns that manufacturer-provided installers may not work on some ARM computers. Do not attempt to install the extracted x86 or x64 driver manually, and do not disable driver signature verification. If Windows installs only a basic driver, printing may work without IJ Scan Utility; for scanning, try the Windows Scan app. Mopria is not suitable for this model because the PIXMA MP237 does not have Wi-Fi or Ethernet.

What to check before installation

Do not connect the USB cable to the computer until instructed to do so.

Do not use a USB extension cable, USB hub, docking station or a USB port on a monitor.

Close any programs used for printing or scanning.

Installing the Canon PIXMA MP237 in Windows 11

Step 1. Remove the automatically added printer

If the PIXMA MP237 has not yet been connected to this computer, proceed to the next step. If the USB cable has already been connected and Windows attempted to install the device automatically, first remove the queue it created.

Disconnect the multifunction printer’s USB cable from the computer.

Open Start → Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Printers & scanners.

Select Canon MP230 series Printer, Canon PIXMA MP237 or a non-working printer instance with a similar name.

Click Remove and confirm the removal.

If the list contains several non-working MP237 instances, remove each of them. Perform a clean reinstallation.

Disconnect the MP237’s USB cable from the computer.

Remove Canon MP230 series Printer or Canon MP237 from Printers & scanners.

Press Win+R, enter
appwiz.cpl
and press Enter.

In the program list, find Canon MP Drivers or a program with MP230 series in its name.

Select it and click Uninstall.

If Canon IJ Scan Utility is listed separately, remove it only if scanning does not work or a completely clean installation is required.

Restart the computer without connecting the multifunction printer.

Run MP Drivers 1.04 as an administrator.

Connect the USB cable only when prompted by the wizard.

The installer waits indefinitely for the printer to be connected

If the installation was canceled or the USB cable was disconnected on the connection waiting screen, Canon recommends starting the installation again. Simply reconnecting the cable may not resume the interrupted process.

Close the installation program.

Disconnect the USB cable from the computer.

Turn off the multifunction printer, wait approximately 10 seconds and turn it on again.

Restart the computer.

Connect the cable to another USB port directly on the computer. Do not use a hub or docking station.

If possible, test the installation with another working USB cable.

Disconnect the cable again and run MP Drivers 1.04 as an administrator.

Connect the multifunction printer only when prompted.

Check whether Windows detects the USB device

Right-click the Start button and open Device Manager.

Expand the Printers, Print queues, Imaging devices, Cameras and Other devices sections.

Connect the powered-on multifunction printer via USB and watch for a new device to appear.

If the list does not change at all, try another USB port and cable. This indicates a lack of USB communication rather than an installer error.

If an unknown device with a yellow warning icon appears, right-click only that device, select Uninstall device, disconnect the cable and restart the computer.

Do not remove USB controllers or unknown devices unrelated to the MP237.

“Driver is unavailable” message

Disconnect the USB cable.

Remove the non-working MP237 instance from Printers & scanners.

Remove the old Canon MP Drivers through Programs and Features.

Restart the computer.

Install MP Drivers 1.04 with the cable disconnected.

If the installer fails again, connect the multifunction printer and try adding it using Windows, as described in the next section.

Windows 11 removes the driver or does not allow it to be installed

Check whether Windows protected print mode is enabled. In this mode, Windows 11 removes third-party printer drivers and allows only compatible devices to be used without a manufacturer-provided driver. The PIXMA MP237 requires the older Canon package and cannot switch to Mopria or IPP network printing.

Open Start → Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Printers & scanners.

Scroll down to Printer Preferences.

Find Windows protected print mode.

If the mode is enabled, click Turn Off and confirm the action.

Restart the computer.

Reinstall MP Drivers 1.04 with the USB cable disconnected.

Turning off this mode allows third-party drivers to be installed but removes an additional printing security restriction. If the setting is enabled by an organizational policy and the button is unavailable, only a system administrator can change it.

The EXE file does not run in Windows in S mode

In S mode, only apps from Microsoft Store can be installed, so the standard Canon EXE installer will not run. First try adding the MP237 using the standard Windows tools. To use the complete MP Drivers package, you must switch out of S mode. This change is irreversible: after switching, you cannot return the computer to S mode. If the computer belongs to an organization or educational institution, do not change the mode without the administrator’s permission.

Installing the MP237 using Windows

This method is used as a fallback if the Canon program does not start or does not detect the multifunction printer. Windows may install a basic printer driver through Windows Update, but IJ Scan Utility and advanced Canon settings may be unavailable. Microsoft also recommends automatic device installation and Windows Update to obtain available drivers.

Windows 11

Turn on the multifunction printer and connect it directly to the computer via USB.

Open Start → Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Printers & scanners.

Click Add device.

Wait several minutes while Windows searches for the printer and an available driver.

If the Canon MP237 or Canon MP230 series appears in the list, click Add device next to its name.

After installation, open Settings → Windows Update → Advanced options → Optional updates.

Open the driver updates section. If a Canon driver is offered, select it and click Download & install.

Restart the computer and print a test page.

Windows 10

Turn on the MP237 and connect it directly to the computer via USB.

Open Start → Settings → Devices → Printers & scanners.

Click Add a printer or scanner.

Wait for Windows to detect the device.

Select the Canon MP237 or Canon MP230 series and click Add device.

Then open Start → Settings → Update & Security → Windows Update.

Click Check for updates.

If the View optional updates link appears, open it and install the available Canon driver.

Restart the computer and test printing.

Completely removing the old driver package

Use this method if removing the printer normally did not help, the installer reports that another version is present or the non-working MP237 queue reappears after every restart.

Disconnect the multifunction printer’s USB cable.

Remove all non-working Canon MP230 series Printer instances from Printers & scanners.

Remove Canon MP Drivers through Control Panel → Programs → Programs and Features.

Press Win+R, enter
printui.exe /s /t2
and press Enter.

On the Drivers tab, find the driver with Canon MP230 series Printer in its name.

Select only this driver and click Remove.

If Windows offers a choice, select Remove driver and driver package.

Do not remove drivers for other Canon printers or devices from other manufacturers.

Restart the computer.

Install MP Drivers 1.04 with the USB cable disconnected.

If Windows reports that the driver is in use, close printing programs, remove jobs from the queue and restart the computer again. After restarting, repeat the removal without connecting the MP237.

Printing works, but the scanner is not detected

Windows may install a basic printer driver automatically without installing the complete Canon scanner driver. The same problem may occur after an operating system update. Canon indicates that the scanner driver must be reinstalled in this situation.

Disconnect the multifunction printer’s USB cable.

Remove Canon MP Drivers and IJ Scan Utility through Programs and Features.

Restart the computer.

Run MP Drivers 1.04 as an administrator.

Connect the USB cable only when prompted by the program.

After installation, open IJ Scan Utility and test scanning from the computer.

If the program cannot find the device, open Device Manager and check the Imaging devices and Cameras sections. The Canon device should not be displayed with a yellow warning icon.

The scan button on the multifunction printer may not work immediately after a Windows update even if scanning from the computer is available. First test operation through IJ Scan Utility, and then reinstall the complete package.

The printer is installed, but jobs do not print

Check the queue and the selected printer

Open Printers & scanners.

Select Canon MP230 series Printer and open the print queue.

Remove any stuck jobs.

In the queue menu, make sure that Pause Printing and Use Printer Offline are not enabled.

When printing from a program, select Canon MP230 series Printer again rather than Microsoft Print to PDF or an old MP237 duplicate.

Restart the Print Spooler

Press Win+R, enter
services.msc
and press Enter.

Find the Print Spooler service.

Right-click it and select Restart.

Send the test page to the printer again.

Check the queue’s USB port

Open Printer properties for the Canon MP237.

Select the Ports tab.

A directly connected multifunction printer normally uses a virtual USB port, such as USB001.

If WSD, LPT or another unsuitable port is selected, choose the USB port associated with the MP237 and click Apply.

Do not change the port if you cannot see a USB port or determine which one belongs to the device.
