This test immediately distinguishes a mechanical problem from an incorrectly selected source in the scanning application.<\/p>\n<p>ADF stands for automatic document feeder. In some manuals and localizations, other abbreviations may be used. It is designed for separate, flat sheets. Books, receipts, photographs, newspaper clippings, wrinkled documents, and non-standard originals should be scanned from the platen glass.<\/p>\n<div style=\"background-color: #eef6ff; border-left: 5px solid #2271b1; margin: 20px 0; padding: 14px 18px;\">\n<p style=\"margin: 0 0 8px;\"><strong>Where to start<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0;\">Take one new, flat A4 sheet weighing about 80 g\/m\u00b2, place it in the ADF face up, and make a copy from the MFP control panel. If the sheet is not fed, proceed to checking the original, clearing jams, and cleaning the rollers. Test the ADF by Copying One Sheet<\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li>Remove all documents from the ADF and make sure there is nothing on the platen glass.<\/li>\n<li>Turn on the MFP and wait until it reaches the ready state.<\/li>\n<li>Take one flat, dry A4 sheet weighing approximately 80 g\/m\u00b2.<\/li>\n<li>Place the sheet in the ADF face up, with the top edge entering first.<\/li>\n<li>Move the side guides against the edges of the sheet. They should keep it straight without bending or pinching it.<\/li>\n<li>Press the <strong>COPY<\/strong> mode button.<\/li>\n<li>Press the button to start black-and-white or color copying.<\/li>\n<li>Check whether the ADF begins feeding the document and whether the original exits completely.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3>How to Evaluate the Result<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>The sheet is not picked up or becomes jammed.<\/strong> Do not reinstall the driver. Check whether the original is suitable, inspect the ADF paper path, rollers, and separation pad.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The sheet feeds at an angle.<\/strong> Readjust the guides and check the document edges. If the skew remains with a new sheet, clean the entire roller, not just the visible section.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The copy is produced normally.<\/strong> The ADF mechanism, its sensors, and communication with the scanner are working. Proceed to the section about selecting the source in the application.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The sheet passes through, but the copy contains a vertical line.<\/strong> This is a different problem: clean the narrow ADF glass strip. Disassembling the feed mechanism and reinstalling the driver will not remove a line that appears only on copies and scans made through the ADF.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Step 2. Also use the platen glass for books, photographs, receipts, newspaper clippings, and irregularly shaped originals.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>For feed testing, do not mix different sizes and weights. Even if a special mode can handle some originals of different lengths, a small, uniform stack provides a better indication of whether the mechanism is working correctly.<\/p>\n<h2>Step 3. Remove a Document Left in the ADF During Power-On<\/h2>\n<p>If the MFP is turned on with an original already loaded in the ADF, the device may detect it as a jammed document. This is expected behavior and does not necessarily mean that the roller or sensor is faulty.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Remove all originals from the ADF input and output trays.<\/li>\n<li>Wait a few seconds and check whether the message disappears.<\/li>\n<li>If the message remains, press <strong>STOP<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>If the control panel does not return to the ready state, shut down the MFP normally.<\/li>\n<li>Open the ADF top cover and check the paper path for small torn fragments.<\/li>\n<li>Close the cover, turn the MFP on again with the ADF empty, and wait for full initialization.<\/li>\n<li>After the ready state appears, load one test sheet.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Do not leave documents in the ADF overnight or turn on the device with a stack already loaded. This also prevents deformation of the bottom sheet caused by prolonged contact with the rollers.<\/p>\n<h2>Step 4. Safely Remove a Jammed Document<\/h2>\n<p>If the sheet has almost completely exited the ADF, it can be carefully pulled in the normal direction of travel, but only if it comes out without noticeable resistance. If the sheet does not move easily, do not pull harder \u2014 open the cover and release the mechanism.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Stop copying or scanning by pressing <strong>STOP<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Remove any unfed sheets from the ADF input tray.<\/li>\n<li>Lift the ADF top cover.<\/li>\n<li>Inspect the input, output, and area under the open cover.<\/li>\n<li>Remove any loose document.<\/li>\n<li>If a sheet is trapped inside, carefully lift the internal feed mechanism using the designated part.<\/li>\n<li>Hold the document with both hands and slowly pull it out, trying not to tear it.<\/li>\n<li>Check that no sheet corner, strip of paper, label, or piece of a self-adhesive note remains inside.<\/li>\n<li>Return the internal mechanism to its original position.<\/li>\n<li>Close the ADF top cover until it locks.<\/li>\n<li>Press <strong>STOP<\/strong> to return the scanner head to the correct position and clear the stopped job.<\/li>\n<li>Make a test copy using one new sheet.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<div style=\"background-color: #fff1f0; border-left: 5px solid #d63638; margin: 20px 0; padding: 14px 18px;\">\n<p style=\"margin: 0 0 8px;\"><strong>Do not damage the paper path or sensors<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0;\">Do not pull a trapped document with a sharp movement and do not use a screwdriver, knife, needle, or metal tweezers. Do not press the sensor flags or try to rotate the gears. If the sheet cannot be released through the user-accessible covers, service is required.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2>Step 5. Clean the ADF Rollers and Separation Pad<\/h2>\n<p>Paper dust and a smooth coating reduce the rollers&#8217; grip on the sheet. Contamination of the rubber separation pad prevents the stack from separating properly, so the ADF may fail to pick up paper or may pull in several pages at the same time.<\/p>\n<h3>What You Will Need<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>a soft, clean, lint-free cloth;<\/li>\n<li>a small amount of clean water to lightly dampen the cloth;<\/li>\n<li>several new sheets of plain office paper for testing.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Cleaning Procedure<\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li>Finish all copying, scanning, and fax transmission jobs.<\/li>\n<li>Shut down the MFP normally and wait until it turns off completely.<\/li>\n<li>Remove documents from the ADF input and output trays.<\/li>\n<li>Open the ADF top cover.<\/li>\n<li>Lightly dampen a lint-free cloth with clean water and wring it out thoroughly. No liquid should drip from the cloth.<\/li>\n<li>Wipe the visible feed roller from side to side.<\/li>\n<li>Carefully rotate the roller forward, in the normal document feed direction, and clean its entire circumference.<\/li>\n<li>Lift the inner cover of the feed mechanism.<\/li>\n<li>Clean the rollers underneath it in the same way, rotating them forward to reach the entire surface.<\/li>\n<li>Wipe the guide, rubber separation pad, and rubber sheet. Do not stretch or detach the rubber parts.<\/li>\n<li>Make sure there is no lint from the cloth or torn paper remaining in the path.<\/li>\n<li>Wait until the cleaned surfaces are completely dry.<\/li>\n<li>Return the inner cover to its original position.<\/li>\n<li>Close the ADF top cover and turn on the MFP.<\/li>\n<li>First test one sheet, then a stack of 2\u20135 sheets.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<div style=\"background-color: #fffbf0; border-left: 5px solid #ff9800; margin: 20px 0; padding: 14px 18px;\">\n<p style=\"margin: 0 0 8px;\"><strong>What not to use for cleaning the rollers<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0;\">Do not apply liquid directly to the mechanism. Do not use alcohol, gasoline, solvent, glass cleaner, oil, silicone lubricant, abrasive sponges, or household wet wipes. These products can alter the rubber surface, damage plastic, or leave a slippery coating.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Do not try to improve paper pickup with sandpaper or a sharp object. A roughened surface may temporarily increase grip, but it will alter the roller shape and accelerate skewing and repeated jams.<\/p>\n<h2>Step 6. Correct Multiple-Sheet Feeding and Skew<\/h2>\n<p>After cleaning, test the ADF using identical new sheets. Old documents may stick together because of moisture, static electricity, staple marks, or curled edges.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Take 3\u20135 new, dry A4 sheets of the same weight.<\/li>\n<li>Fan the edges of the stack several times so that the sheets separate from one another.<\/li>\n<li>Align the stack on a table.<\/li>\n<li>Make sure the first sheet does not have a curled leading edge.<\/li>\n<li>Load the stack face up, with the top edge entering first.<\/li>\n<li>Move the guides against the sheets without excessive pressure.<\/li>\n<li>Make a copy of all pages.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>If new sheets feed normally but the original documents continue to jam or feed together, scan those originals from the platen glass. Do not try to compensate for poor paper condition by pressing down on the stack by hand while it is feeding.<\/p>\n<p>If the ADF continues to pick up two sheets at a time even after cleaning and when using new office paper, the rollers or rubber separation pad are probably worn. These parts must retain an even shape and sufficient grip. Replacement requires parts suitable for the exact model.<\/p>\n<h2>Step 7. If the ADF Copies but Does Not Work in the Scanning Application<\/h2>\n<p>A normal copy made through the ADF confirms that the feeder is mechanically working. In this case, open the scanning settings on the computer and select the automatic document feeder as the original source.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Start the application used for scanning.<\/li>\n<li>Select the required OKI MFP if several scanners are installed in the system.<\/li>\n<li>Open the scanning options or advanced settings.<\/li>\n<li>Find the <strong>Source<\/strong>, <strong>Scan Source<\/strong>, <strong>Paper Source<\/strong>, or similar setting.<\/li>\n<li>Select <strong>ADF<\/strong>, <strong>Feeder<\/strong>, <strong>Document Feeder<\/strong>, or <strong>Auto<\/strong> instead of <strong>Flatbed<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>For single-sided originals, select <strong>1-sided<\/strong> or <strong>Simplex<\/strong>. For double-sided originals, select <strong>2-sided<\/strong> or <strong>Duplex<\/strong> if this feature is available for the model and driver.<\/li>\n<li>Load one sheet face up and perform a preview scan.<\/li>\n<li>After a successful test, load the remaining documents.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>If the application adds blank reverse-side pages, check whether double-sided scanning is enabled for single-sided originals. This is a job setting, not multiple-sheet feeding.<\/p>\n<p>If ADF and Feeder options are missing even though copying through the automatic document feeder works, the application may be using a limited scanner interface. Test scanning in ActKey or an application with TWAIN support. Only at this stage does it make sense to check the scanner driver installation.<\/p>\n<p>Do not change the MFP&#8217;s network settings if the application already detects the scanner and scanning from the platen glass works. The ADF is selected in the original source settings, not in the network address settings.<\/p>\n<h2>Step 8. If ADF Cover Open or a Jam Is Displayed Without Paper<\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li>Remove all documents from the ADF.<\/li>\n<li>Open the ADF top cover.<\/li>\n<li>Make sure the inner feed mechanism cover was fully returned to its original position after cleaning.<\/li>\n<li>Inspect the input and output areas under good lighting without using sharp objects.<\/li>\n<li>Remove any paper fragments you find.<\/li>\n<li>Close the top cover evenly until it locks. Do not slam it shut.<\/li>\n<li>Press <strong>STOP<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>If the message remains, shut down the device normally and turn it on again with the ADF empty.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Do not reset the settings or reinstall the driver because of an ADF Cover Open or Document Jam message displayed on the device&#8217;s own control panel. These actions will not restore a mechanical latch, sensor flag, or drive.<\/p>\n<h2>When ADF Repair Is Required<\/h2>\n<p>Stop troubleshooting yourself and contact service support if at least one of the following conditions occurs:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>the jam message remains after removing all documents, checking the paper path, pressing STOP, and starting the device with the ADF empty;<\/li>\n<li>the cover is closed, but the device continuously displays ADF Cover Open;<\/li>\n<li>the rollers do not rotate even though the motor can be heard, or gear cracking noises come from inside;<\/li>\n<li>a document is trapped in an inaccessible area and cannot be removed through the user-accessible covers without force;<\/li>\n<li>new paper continues to feed several sheets at a time after the rollers and separation pad have been thoroughly cleaned;<\/li>\n<li>the sheet consistently moves to one side even with correctly adjusted guides and clean rollers;<\/li>\n<li>cracks, deformation, smooth shiny areas, or peeling rubber parts are visible.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In these cases, possible causes include worn rollers and separation pad, a faulty document sensor, cover latch, clutch, motor, or ADF drive.
