IJ Scan Utility does not find the device, the scanning buttons remain inactive, or the <strong>\u201cCannot communicate with scanner\u201d<\/strong> message appears.<\/p>\n<p>This situation is possible because printing and scanning use different components. An installed printer queue is sufficient for printing, while network scanning additionally requires:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>the ScanGear scanner driver;<\/li>\n<li>the IJ Scan Utility program;<\/li>\n<li>IJ Network Scanner Selector EX;<\/li>\n<li>network scanner registration on the computer;<\/li>\n<li>permission to communicate through the firewall.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This guide applies to the following models:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Canon PIXMA MG3610, MG3620, MG3640, MG3640S, MG3650, MG3650S, MG3660, MG3670, and MG3680.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>All the devices listed above belong to Canon PIXMA MG3600 series. Start IJ Network Scanner Selector EX<\/h2>\n<p>IJ Network Scanner Selector EX registers the network scanner on the computer. Without this program, IJ Scan Utility may not find MG3600 series even if printing works.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Open the <strong>Start<\/strong> menu.<\/li>\n<li>Enter the following in the search box:<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<pre style=\"background: #f4f4f4; border: 1px solid #ddd; padding: 12px; white-space: pre-wrap; overflow-x: auto;\">IJ Network Scanner Selector EX<\/pre>\n<ol start=\"3\">\n<li>Start the program found in the search results.<\/li>\n<li>Look at the right side of the taskbar.<\/li>\n<li>Open the hidden icons if the program icon is not immediately displayed.<\/li>\n<li>Make sure that the IJ Network Scanner Selector EX icon appears in the notification area.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3>If the program is missing from the search results<\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li>Open the list of installed apps.<\/li>\n<li>Find the <strong>Canon Utilities<\/strong> folder.<\/li>\n<li>Check whether IJ Network Scanner Selector EX is present.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>If the program is missing, the MP Drivers package was not installed completely. Proceed to the driver reinstallation section.<\/p>\n<h2>Method 5. Select the network version of the device in IJ Scan Utility<\/h2>\n<p>The USB version of MG3600 series may be selected in IJ Scan Utility. Check the computer\u2019s network<\/h2>\n<p>The computer and multifunction printer must be on the same local network.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Click the network icon on the right side of the taskbar.<\/li>\n<li>Look at the active network name.<\/li>\n<li>Compare it with the SSID field on the MG3600 series network printout.<\/li>\n<li>Disconnect the VPN.<\/li>\n<li>Do not use a mobile hotspot.<\/li>\n<li>Do not connect the computer to a guest network.<\/li>\n<li>Search for the scanner again.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3>The computer is connected to the router by cable<\/h3>\n<p>A wired connection for the computer is acceptable. However, the wired and wireless parts of the network must allow devices to communicate with each other.<\/p>\n<h3>The multifunction printer is connected to a guest network<\/h3>\n<p>Guest networks often block communication between clients. Connect the computer and multifunction printer to the router\u2019s main network.<\/p>\n<h3>A Wi-Fi range extender is being used<\/h3>\n<p>Some range extenders create a separate network segment. For testing, connect the computer and multifunction printer directly to the main router.<\/p>\n<h2>Method 9. Allow Canon programs through the firewall<\/h2>\n<p>Code <strong>5,157,69<\/strong> may appear if security software blocks network scanning or another scanner is selected.<\/p>\n<p>Code <strong>5,156,69<\/strong> also indicates a communication failure. Check whether the scanner is being used by another program<\/h2>\n<p>MG3600 series cannot perform several network scans at the same time.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Close IJ Scan Utility.<\/li>\n<li>Close ScanGear.<\/li>\n<li>Close My Image Garden.<\/li>\n<li>Close PDF and image applications that may have opened the scanner.<\/li>\n<li>Close scanning programs on other computers.<\/li>\n<li>Wait several seconds.<\/li>\n<li>Start only IJ Scan Utility again.<\/li>\n<li>Try scanning again.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>If a message states that the scanner is being used by another application or user, closing the other programs and trying again is usually sufficient.<\/p>\n<h2>Method 13. Check scanning in another application<\/h2>\n<p>Testing in another program helps determine whether the problem is limited to IJ Scan Utility.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Open <strong>Printers &amp; scanners<\/strong> in Windows Settings.<\/li>\n<li>Check whether Canon MG3600 series is displayed as a scanning device.<\/li>\n<li>If a scanning app is installed, open it.<\/li>\n<li>Select Canon MG3600 series.<\/li>\n<li>Perform a test scan.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>If another program scans successfully but IJ Scan Utility does not work, select the device again in the IJ Scan Utility settings or reinstall the Canon program.<\/p>\n<p>If the scanner is not detected in any program, check the driver, WIA, and network connection.<\/p>\n<h2>Method 14.
