Sometimes the printed surface is scratched, and smeared areas appear in photos.<\/p>\n<p>The most common causes are contamination inside the printer, curled paper, an incorrect media type, or excessive ink application. To remove internal contamination, Canon provides a special <strong>Bottom Plate Cleaning<\/strong> procedure.<\/p>\n<p>This guide applies to the following models:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Canon PIXMA TS9540;<\/li>\n<li>Canon PIXMA TS9540A;<\/li>\n<li>Canon PIXMA TS9541C;<\/li>\n<li>Canon PIXMA TS9550;<\/li>\n<li>Canon PIXMA TS9550A;<\/li>\n<li>Canon PIXMA TS9551C;<\/li>\n<li>Canon PIXMA TS9551CA.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>All the models listed above belong to the Canon TS9500 series and use the same basic procedures for bottom plate cleaning and preventing paper abrasion.<\/p>\n<div style=\"background-color: #fffbf0; border-left: 5px solid #ff9800; padding: 20px; margin: 25px 0; border-radius: 4px; box-shadow: 0 1px 3px rgba(0,0,0,0.05);\">\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0;\"><strong>Do not start with print head cleaning<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If the image prints completely but additional marks appear on the sheet or ink is present on the back, standard nozzle cleaning is usually unnecessary.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0;\">First, check the paper and perform <strong>Bottom Plate Cleaning<\/strong>. This is a separate procedure intended to clean the inside of the printer.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2>Method 1: Check the Paper Type and Printable Side<\/h2>\n<p>An incorrect media setting affects the distance between the print head and the sheet, the paper feed speed, and the amount of ink applied.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Open the document or photo.<\/li>\n<li>Select <strong>File \u2192 Print<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Select <strong>Canon TS9500 series<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Open <strong>Printer properties<\/strong>, <strong>Settings<\/strong>, or <strong>Preferences<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Find the <strong>Media Type<\/strong> setting.<\/li>\n<li>Select the type of paper that is actually loaded.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>For standard office paper, select:<\/p>\n<pre style=\"background: #f4f4f4; border: 1px solid #ddd; padding: 12px; white-space: pre-wrap; overflow-x: auto;\">Plain Paper<\/pre>\n<p>For photo paper, select its exact name or the closest supported media type.<\/p>\n<p>Do not select photo paper when printing on a standard sheet. The printer may apply too much ink, causing the paper to become wavy and touch the print head.<\/p>\n<h3>Check the Printable Side<\/h3>\n<p>When loading paper in the rear tray, the printable side must face up.<\/p>\n<p>When loading plain paper in the cassette, the printable side must face down.<\/p>\n<p>If photo paper has only one printable side, check the instructions on the packaging. Store unused sheets flat in the manufacturer\u2019s packaging.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2>Method 3: Reduce the Number of Sheets<\/h2>\n<p>When a large stack is loaded, sheets may feed unevenly and touch internal parts.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Remove the entire stack.<\/li>\n<li>Align the edges.<\/li>\n<li>Load one to five sheets.<\/li>\n<li>Position the paper guides correctly.<\/li>\n<li>Print a test page.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Photo paper and thick special media should be tested one sheet at a time.<\/p>\n<h2>Method 4: Perform Bottom Plate Cleaning<\/h2>\n<p>Bottom Plate Cleaning removes ink contamination from the lower internal area of the printer.<\/p>\n<p>You will need:<\/p>\n<pre style=\"background: #f4f4f4; border: 1px solid #ddd; padding: 12px; white-space: pre-wrap; overflow-x: auto;\">1 new sheet of A4 or Letter-sized plain white paper<\/pre>\n<p>Do not use a previously printed, wrinkled, or dirty sheet.<\/p>\n<h3>Step 1: Prepare the Printer<\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li>Turn on the printer.<\/li>\n<li>Wait for the <strong>HOME<\/strong> screen to appear.<\/li>\n<li>Remove all paper from the rear tray.<\/li>\n<li>Leave the cassette unchanged.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3>Step 2: Start Cleaning<\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li>On the <strong>HOME<\/strong> screen, select <strong>Setup<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Select <strong>Maintenance<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Select <strong>Bottom Plate Cleaning<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>On the confirmation screen, select <strong>Yes<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Following the on-screen message, make sure the rear tray is empty.<\/li>\n<li>Tap <strong>OK<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3>Step 3: Prepare the Sheet<\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li>Take a new sheet of A4 or Letter-sized paper.<\/li>\n<li>Fold it in half lengthwise.<\/li>\n<li>Run your fingers along the fold.<\/li>\n<li>Unfold the sheet completely.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>A lengthwise crease should remain on the sheet.<\/p>\n<h3>Step 4: Load the Sheet Correctly<\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li>Tap <strong>OK<\/strong> on the touchscreen.<\/li>\n<li>Load the folded and unfolded sheet <strong>in landscape orientation<\/strong> in the rear tray.<\/li>\n<li>The open side of the fold must face you.<\/li>\n<li>Move the paper guides against the edges of the sheet.<\/li>\n<li>Open the operation panel.<\/li>\n<li>Fully extend the paper output tray.<\/li>\n<li>Tap <strong>OK<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>The printer will feed the sheet through its internal area. The crease will collect contamination from the bottom plate.<\/p>\n<h3>Step 5: Check the Result<\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li>Wait until the sheet is ejected completely.<\/li>\n<li>When the completion message appears, tap <strong>OK<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Check the crease and the surrounding areas.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>If the crease is clean, load plain paper and perform a test print.<\/p>\n<p>If ink is visible on the crease:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>take another new sheet;<\/li>\n<li>repeat Bottom Plate Cleaning;<\/li>\n<li>do not reuse the same contaminated sheet.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<div style=\"background-color: #fffbf0; border-left: 5px solid #ff9800; padding: 20px; margin: 25px 0; border-radius: 4px; box-shadow: 0 1px 3px rgba(0,0,0,0.05);\">\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0;\"><strong>Important difference<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0;\">For Bottom Plate Cleaning, the sheet is loaded in landscape orientation in the rear tray. For standard printing, paper is loaded with the short edge facing forward. Follow the diagram displayed on the printer\u2019s screen.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2>Method 5: Clean Contaminated Protrusions Inside the Printer<\/h2>\n<p>Use this method only after performing Bottom Plate Cleaning twice if the paper continues to become stained.<\/p>\n<p>Prepare:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>several clean cotton swabs;<\/li>\n<li>a flashlight or good external lighting;<\/li>\n<li>a dry, soft, lint-free cloth.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Step 1: Disconnect the Printer Completely<\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li>Turn off the printer using the power button.<\/li>\n<li>Wait until the power lamp turns off.<\/li>\n<li>Unplug the power cord from the electrical outlet.<\/li>\n<li>Disconnect the USB cable and Ethernet network cable if they are connected.<\/li>\n<li>Wait several minutes.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3>Step 2: Inspect the Inside<\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li>Open the scanning unit \/ cover.<\/li>\n<li>Inspect the lower part of the paper path.<\/li>\n<li>Find any small protruding plastic parts with visible ink on them.<\/li>\n<li>Do not touch the transparent or white strip behind the print head holder.<\/li>\n<li>Do not touch the electrical contacts or nozzles.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3>Step 3: Remove the Ink<\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li>Take a dry cotton swab.<\/li>\n<li>Carefully wipe only the contaminated protrusion.<\/li>\n<li>Do not press on the part.<\/li>\n<li>If the swab becomes heavily stained, replace it with a new one.<\/li>\n<li>Do not spread the ink onto adjacent parts.<\/li>\n<li>Make sure no cotton fibers remain inside.<\/li>\n<li>Close the scanning unit \/ cover.<\/li>\n<li>Reconnect the power and turn on the printer.<\/li>\n<li>Perform a test print.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Do not use water, alcohol, acetone, paint thinner, glass cleaner, or any other liquid.<\/p>\n<p>If the contamination is deep inside and accessing it requires disassembling the printer, contact a service center.<\/p>\n<h2>Parts You Must Not Touch Inside the Printer<\/h2>\n<p>Do not touch:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>the white or transparent positioning strip;<\/li>\n<li>electrical contacts;<\/li>\n<li>print head nozzles;<\/li>\n<li>the drive belt;<\/li>\n<li>gears;<\/li>\n<li>metal guide rails immediately after printing;<\/li>\n<li>soft absorbent components inside the printer.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Do not attempt to remove all ink from the internal absorbent materials. They are designed to collect ink during normal operation.<\/p>\n<h2>Method 6: Enable Prevent Paper Abrasion<\/h2>\n<p>This setting increases the distance between the print head and the paper. It is useful if the surface of thick or slightly curled paper touches the print head.<\/p>\n<h3>Enable It from the Touchscreen<\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li>Turn on the printer.<\/li>\n<li>On the <strong>HOME<\/strong> screen, select <strong>Setup<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Open <strong>Device settings<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Select <strong>Print settings<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Find <strong>Prevent paper abrasion<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Select <strong>ON<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Print again.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3>Enable It Through Windows<\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li>Open the <strong>Start<\/strong> menu.<\/li>\n<li>Find the <strong>Canon Utilities<\/strong> folder.<\/li>\n<li>Start <strong>Canon IJ Printer Assistant Tool<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Select <strong>Canon TS9500 series<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Click <strong>Custom Settings<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Select the <strong>Prevent paper abrasion<\/strong> checkbox.<\/li>\n<li>Click <strong>OK<\/strong> or <strong>Send<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Confirm the change.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Printing may become slower after this function is enabled.<\/p>\n<div style=\"background-color: #fffbf0; border-left: 5px solid #ff9800; padding: 20px; margin: 25px 0; border-radius: 4px; box-shadow: 0 1px 3px rgba(0,0,0,0.05);\">\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0;\"><strong>Disable the setting after resolving the problem<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0;\">Prevent Paper Abrasion applies to all subsequent print jobs. Some ink is applied beyond the paper and enters the internal area of the printer.<\/p>\n<p>If contamination appears only during borderless printing:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Open the printer properties.<\/li>\n<li>Check that the correct paper size is selected.<\/li>\n<li>Check the photo paper type.<\/li>\n<li>Find the <strong>Amount of Extension<\/strong> setting.<\/li>\n<li>Reduce the extension slightly.<\/li>\n<li>Print a test photo.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>If the extension is too small, thin white lines may appear along the edges.<\/p>\n<p>After printing a large number of borderless photos, it is recommended that you perform Bottom Plate Cleaning.<\/p>\n<h2>If Only the Bottom Edge Becomes Stained<\/h2>\n<p>Check:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>whether the document extends beyond the printable area;<\/li>\n<li>whether the correct page size is selected;<\/li>\n<li>whether the document size matches the paper size;<\/li>\n<li>whether excessive scaling is enabled;<\/li>\n<li>whether the bottom edge of the sheet is curled;<\/li>\n<li>whether the bottom plate is contaminated.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Try increasing the document\u2019s bottom margin and perform a test print.<\/p>\n<p>If the contamination disappears, part of the image was previously being printed too close to the edge of the paper.<\/p>\n<h2>If the Top Edge Becomes Stained<\/h2>\n<p>Check:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>whether the paper is picked up correctly;<\/li>\n<li>whether the paper guides are positioned too far apart;<\/li>\n<li>whether the leading edge of the sheet is curled;<\/li>\n<li>whether a foreign object is inside the printer;<\/li>\n<li>whether the paper feed area is contaminated.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Load one new flat sheet and print again.<\/p>\n<h2>If Ink Marks Appear at Regular Intervals<\/h2>\n<p>A regularly repeating mark may be caused by a contaminated roller or another rotating part.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Perform Bottom Plate Cleaning.<\/li>\n<li>Check the paper feed rollers.<\/li>\n<li>Print several clean sheets.<\/li>\n<li>Compare the distance between the marks.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>If identical marks continue to appear on every sheet, there may be an internal ink leak or contamination on a part that cannot be accessed without disassembly. Contact a service center.<\/p>\n<h2>If Marks Appeared After a Paper Jam<\/h2>\n<p>After jammed paper is removed, the following may remain inside:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>a scrap of paper;<\/li>\n<li>smeared ink;<\/li>\n<li>a piece of a label;<\/li>\n<li>a folded part of the sheet.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ol>\n<li>Turn off the printer.<\/li>\n<li>Unplug the power cord.<\/li>\n<li>Open the scanning unit \/ cover.<\/li>\n<li>Inspect the inside.<\/li>\n<li>Remove only loose, visible scraps.<\/li>\n<li>Do not touch the white strip.<\/li>\n<li>Close the cover.<\/li>\n<li>Perform Bottom Plate Cleaning.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2>If Marks Appeared After Replacing an Ink Tank<\/h2>\n<p>Check the ink tank that was installed most recently.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Turn on the printer.<\/li>\n<li>Open the scanning unit \/ cover.<\/li>\n<li>Wait until the holder stops completely.<\/li>\n<li>Check whether the ink tank is installed correctly.<\/li>\n<li>Press it down until it clicks into place.<\/li>\n<li>Check for a large amount of leaked ink.<\/li>\n<li>Close the scanning unit \/ cover.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>If the ink tank is damaged or leaking, do not continue printing. Replace the ink tank.<\/p>\n<p>Do not wipe the ink outlet or electrical contacts.<\/p>\n<h2>If Paper Becomes Stained During Duplex Printing<\/h2>\n<p>The first side may not have had enough time to dry.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Make sure plain paper of a supported size is being used.<\/li>\n<li>Reduce the print intensity.<\/li>\n<li>Increase the ink drying wait time.<\/li>\n<li>Check whether the sheet curls after the first side is printed.<\/li>\n<li>Print the same document in single-sided mode.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>If single-sided printing produces no marks, the problem is related to ink drying or the sheet being fed through the printer again.<\/p>\n<p>For documents with heavy ink coverage, you can use manual duplex printing and allow the first side to dry completely before reloading the paper.<\/p>\n<h2>If Photo Paper Is Scratched<\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li>Use photo paper that is not damaged or severely curled.<\/li>\n<li>Check the printable side.<\/li>\n<li>Load one sheet at a time.<\/li>\n<li>Select the exact media type.<\/li>\n<li>Enable Prevent Paper Abrasion.<\/li>\n<li>Select Standard or High print quality.<\/li>\n<li>Increase the drying time.<\/li>\n<li>Do not stack finished photos immediately after printing.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Do not touch the printed surface until it is completely dry.<\/p>\n<h2>If Streaks Appear Inside the Image<\/h2>\n<p>Not all streaks are caused by contamination of the bottom plate.<\/p>\n<p>Print a nozzle check pattern if:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>horizontal streaks run across the entire photo;<\/li>\n<li>one color prints unevenly;<\/li>\n<li>thin lines are missing from the image;<\/li>\n<li>the streak matches the color of the image;<\/li>\n<li>the print has become faded.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If the nozzle check pattern contains missing areas, perform print head cleaning.<\/p>\n<p>If the nozzle check pattern is correct but ink remains on the back of the paper, perform Bottom Plate Cleaning.<\/p>\n<h2>Paper Feed Roller Cleaning<\/h2>\n<p>Contaminated rollers may leave marks or feed the sheet at an angle.
